The SureFlap door uses a microchip to activate the cat door. My cat has always had a cat door but used to wear a magnet on his collar that would activate the door. Now I don't have to worry if he loses his collar because he can still get in. Very easy to program. Just push one button and the next cat (or dog) to walk through the door is recorded for the door. The door also has a curfew setting. This was gold to me. I had been paying a cat sitter $10 a day to open and close the cat door any day I was gone. Easily set time it opens or locks for the night. Installation was a breeze as I replaced a manual cat door to this microchip controlled large cat door. My cats use a regular cat door so switching to this new door was really easy for them and the controls made it easy for me. Two cats have microchips implanted and the third uses the collar type and the Sure Flap Microchip LARGE Door works seamlessly for all. I used the unlocked mode till all three cats used the door than set it for ID registrations till all three had been through and registered. After this I set it for 10 second delay, then 2 second delay and now no delay. What an excellent quality door and so easy to program. I recommend the large door as I have a 15 lb., a 12 lb. and a 5 lb. cat and it works great for all of them.barbsmh

The Sureflap is a great product, easy to install and by following the setup guide, quite easy to program. It has stoped the neighbors stray cat from making itself at home stealing our own cats food and the fights when it would just come inside. My only problem is to somehow get our own pet cat to want to use it. Seems to be quite stuborn and will not exert enough nose pressure on the flap to overcome the magnetic latch. I may need to carefully dismantle the unit to remove the magnet and then see what happens. I would definitely recomend this product to anyone who wants to have control over both movements of not only their own cat but anyone elses as well.Graham

Faulty flap it sticks on one side. Cats unable to exit It was fitted professionally at personal cost to ensure done correctly. But cats cannot exit as the door has to be forced open on one side. We wanted to keep out new kitten inside whilst allowing our existing pets (2 small dogs and older cat) to come and go. Unfortunately, this product is virtually useless- will allow any animal to exit, schedule must be the same for all pets (not good when you have a dog who needs the loo throughout the night?), and if you have to override on the door itself, you have to reimpose the curfews through the app manually. Such a shame, as this product had so much potential, but falls so far short.Minnie

if the cats chip is working. My cat is 13 years old Siamese, the chip will not trigger the door consistently. I suspect that it has migrated or its too old? works fine with a collar chip. Problem is he all ready lost 1 collar/chip. I am having better luck with a different type of safety collar. My cat does not normally wear a collar. The door works fine with our new kitten. This is a great product. Easy to install. Easy to program. I bought 2 of the pendants and hung them off tear away collars. The only drawback I have found. I had to go and buy 2 sets of rechargeable batteries. I need to change them out every 5 to 6 days. We live in Pittsburgh, PA so right now, we are dealing with cold temperatures. I have found that the batteries are at about 80% when the low battery indicator activates. I am not willing to find out how low the batts must discharge before the locking mechanism stops working. I refuse to lock my cat out just to experiment how low the battery power must go.FredJ

This litererally changed our life. We were constantly letting the cat in and out, or looking for him when it got dark. Now he comes and goes as he pleases, and when it gets dark or we want him inside we just set it to "in only", and he's captured. He's happy, we're happy. He adjusted to it in no time. He had a bit of a problem coming in at first, so we just put some treats on the floor inside and he popped right in. We have lots of raccoons in the area so this keeps them out, no problem. We have not installed it in the door yet…but just looking at it, it looks sturdy and indestructible, which is good, because my dog literally eats and tears the doors with the flexible plastic. I have 7 dogs of varying sizes who use this door constantly. The only fault I find is that the rubber gaskets between the slats in the door wear out . Everything else lasts a very long time. I tweaked it by putting piano hinges between the slats and that has extended its use a lot. If I could buy just that part the door would last practically forever! This is a brilliant concept which works for me. Its handy to be able to see remotely which of my 3 cats are in or out at any time. Ideally, I wouldve gone for the cat door version allowing individual cat in/out enablement via the app, but one of my boys is circumferencely challenged, so I was forced to go for the slightly larger version! This version only allows in/out. You cant specify individual animals, which I guess is ok for small dogs, but not so much car-wise. Takes 4x C batteries. They run down faster than you think! We replaced our regular cat door with this cat door with microchip identification because other cats in our neighborhood have been coming into our house whenever we're not home. This new cat door fits right into the hole we cut for the old door. It works like a charm! The sound it makes when it senses the chip is very slight. After a few times, our cat no longer paid attention to the clicking sound at all. We also like that the door is 2 separate pieces instead of 3. And the flap is a clear plastic which helps our cat to look through before entering or leaving the house. Installation was super easy as well. The unit is made of high quality materials. Replacement for the one I'd had for many, many years. It finally needed to be changed as the securing magnet dropped out of the flap and was never found! *think it disappeared into the vacuum cleaner one day). I considered ordering a new flap only, but the enclosure was very yellowed with age and I suspected that it may break if I started prising it apart and put a new part in. Over the years it has cost me little per year to ensure that only my cats can enter the house. Never, ever regretted getting it for a minute!rrwminx

Excellent opening size for our pet who is 18 lbs. I purchased the Medium opening. Our sliding door is a custom height of 12 FT, not a normal height, so using the extension included with the patio panel still doesn’t reach the top of the sliding door, which of course is not the problem of the manufacturer of this product. We remedied the problem by using and cutting to size a disposable hard foam cooler, fitted with a foam edge window and door sealer in order to eliminate cool and hot air from coming in and out. It’s not perfect, but works for our pet and for our use.Grace

I currently own 2 doggy door slider inserts from a competitor brand. I got this PetSafe insert to replace one of my inserts that is worn out, and I am so glad I did! At first glance you can see that the PetSafe is far superior to my competitor door. Upon quick exploration, I could feel that the PetSafe door was much better quality. The PetSafe door itself is more substantial and heavy duty just off the bat. I like that spring-loaded panel at the top of the door is taller (than my competitor brand) so that it can accommodate more sizes of sliders. I have multiple different heights of sliders at my house so that gives me more options of doors for me to place the insert in. This is beneficial to me when I have a party for example because I can give my dogs indoor/outdoor access to a secluded part of my house when young children are over. The second part I really like is the extra security with the locking panel to close the doggy door. Whereas my competitor version only has a plastic lock that could easily be broken into by potential intruders, the PetSafe has a very secure metal pin lock. Third, I appreciate that this insert has a slight tint to it. My competitor version does not. When I open the doggy door in the early morning in my bedroom I "hook" my curtains around my original slider handle for my dogs to access the door and I go back to sleep. The tinting on this insert is at least some attempt to block out the daylight. Finally, I like that they include some weather striping to help combat some unwanted drafts. Although I would recommend to combo the weather stripping provided with foam weather stripping to really complete the seal. Overall, I highly recommend this PetSafe doggy door insert, their attention to detail is prevalent making their door superior to competitors.MamaBear34

I'm giving it three stars because it is working but for the price, I expected a higher-quality item. In some ways this unit is too thin for my patio door track and is floppy, and in other ways – specifically the attachment brackets and the door "latch" – it is too wide. I had to come up with another way to fix the panel in place, then insert foam tape because it kept flapping when the door was used or the wind blew too hard, and then buy separate security bars for the patio door. Not ideal. And I also plan that I will need to remove it if I leave for an extended period of time, as this thing is a serious security vulnerability in the home's perimeter now…not that most adults don't already fit through an extra large pet door opening. I wish this had a full closure panel – aluminum, hinged. Maybe I should have just made something custom since I can't cut a hole in the wall of my rental house for an electronic security dog door.Julie D

After reading all of the reviews, the VERY common problem is the hinge. This is going to be my 3rd or 4th door and second to purchase (the sizable hole is hard to find a replacement for), most EVERYONE has had the exact same broken and weak point of the hinge. Some of these comments are from long enough ago, you would think that the company would look at the common problems and try and fix the issue. But they seemingly have yet to make an attempt to fix the common and perpetual problem of the hinge!!! GUYS COME ON!!!!!!!! Not adding a photo, there are plenty of them on here already.Isaac09

I've had this door for a year now, and after a year of modifying, and remodifying, I give. Simply not a great door for strong dogs. Our doberman broke the door out initially, it was put back in place. The 2nd time he broke it out some of the plastic fasteners broke off. My SO ended up modifying the door with an aluminum strip and all new hardware. It's been broken off several times even with the new modifications. The key backs fall off and we didn't end up using them anyways to begin with. The frame is solid, we got the wall kit which is flimsy and had to seal ourselves but nonetheless it's installed. I'd love to order another model that will fit the already permanent opening. As of current, our heat's turned off until we figure out what to do to fix the door. It's not strong enough for large dogs, they bust it right out!Bunnyfromdahood

Purchased the door about a month ago. We have 4 dogs ranging in size from 6.5 lb to 60 lb. All of them use the door even the little guy. The big dog did not need any training at all he instinctively new when it went click he could go! I was concerned about the reviews but it seemed to me that these were all very large dogs by height and the photos of the installs seemed low to me. I would recommend the product. No more getting up two or three times a night. YAAA I installed it myself, granted I am more of a handyman than most, but I am also over the 65 mark +. So I would expect the young bucks to do it even faster. But you do need to have a supply of the D cells. Batteries are not what they used to be and you only get about a month or a little less use. I am concerned about how long the tag battery will last, time will tell. Great Productricky5437

Lifechanging! We were slaves to our pets and now laugh at the German Shepard who jumps in and out constantly. Our cats took a minute to overcome the heavy flap but are now using regularly. Even our blind chihuahua who is very timid has even become accustomed to it.Amanda

This is a great dog door. I bought it to replace a well used older PetSafe medium door. It took a little longer to install since my door already had a previous door. Mostly it required more trim and fitment time to install, if you have a good grinding tool or hand file set it will really help. The door slides easily in place without binding. It does flex just enough that if someone wanted to enter the house from outside with it closed they could open it. But it is not meant as a security device just to prevent kids and animals from getting out which it does well. It looks great installed, very flush to the door, seals out the drafts really well. All of my dogs including my small pug size mixed breed has no problems going in and out the door. I still need to seal the outside but I'm glad I bought this door.YaheeTech

My dog adjusted to this door immediately. No imposing flaps to push through, just a panel that raises to let the dog out and in. This product has significantly reduced the stress on our family caused by a terrier that simply loves to go in and out all day. It works perfectly and is a godsend. We have a seven month old puppy with tiny bladder syndrome so she needs to go outside frequently. However, we also have two cats with feline leukemia and they must stay inside. We ordered this door and it arrived quickly. It took a few hours to install it in the porch wall, mostly time consuming because of the type of wall we had. Once it was in, it only took a couple of days to teach the pup to use it. It’s not very loud so that is good. The delay between the time the dog approaches the door and the time it opens is fairly quick. We were a bit worried that the male cat (who wants to be the man about town) would follow the dog out because the delay from the time the dog goes out and the door shuts seems rather long. However, the cat realized pretty quickly that he couldn’t get outside by himself so he lost interest in trying after a couple of days. We are quite pleased with the dog door. The only problem we had is the collar that the sensor is on. It didn’t stay snug around her neck so she managed to take it off and chew up the sensor. We are ordering a new sensor and I am going to sew it directly onto her regular collar and hope that will fix the problem. Other than that, it is working well and we are quite happy with this purchase.dseastrider

Pet door flaps made very cheap,extremely light weight, when the slightest wind comes along both flaps are straight out to the outside, magnets in the wrong place to hold the flaps, I have had pet doors for many years and NEVER had this problem, I will never recommend buying this one, not worth the money for sure, very disappointed. I bought it on line with a few hesitations. It is the only viable option for us with 2 greyhounds that won't use a traditional dog door. It arrived quickly but unfortunately without instructions for the Rfid tags. I installed it using the video supplied which got the basics working. It occasionally struggled to close the door. It took a bit to get to talk to someone (possibly due to covid) but once I could talk to Roger he identified the problem over the phone which I then quickly solved. Although it passed the friction test it needed new rollers on the door. Roger also emailed me the Rfid instructions and now everything works very well. It is worth persevering.Harry V.

Thus far, the unit is operating mostly well. The Snap Shut feature is unusable however. When that is selected, the motor doesn’t shut off allowing the gear to slip and grind over the track. Installation instructions/videos not helpful also.Randy B.

Originally I had a regular pet door but we also have cats that were getting out. I changed to the auto slide and located at a different door. Now the dog can get out with the cats safely secured. Also I have our main sliding door available again.Joshua T.

Dog loves it but presentation is misleading. It does not show that it needs to be plugged into a power supply or you need to purchase an additional battery pack. But after spending the additional hundred dollars for the battery pack it allows the dog to easily go in and out, but remember to change the battery out every two weeks or the dog will get locked outside in the middle of the nightCelestecatcrazy

Learn from my mistake and run far away!!! This door was somewhat convenient when first installed, but I quickly found that the transmitter didn't always work, which left my dog inside or outside at times. However, with the first hard rain, this door became a disaster. The door flap leaked water all over my floor, both under the flap and down through the body of the dog door. I didn't discover the flooding until a large puddle had developed, warping and splintering my hardwood. I spent two hours on my knees mopping with towels and trying to seal things with duct tape as the rain continued to flood in under the flap opening. When I called the company, I was told that, since the door had been purchased over 90 days prior, that "the credit card company won't let us do a refund so we can't" (obvious untruth) and that the owner would only let me return it for store credit. They had no interest in finding out what the problem/defect was and trying to cure it or change it so as not to do this to other consumers. I'm was already out the cost of the purchase, hiring a contractor, and having it installed, and now I have to buy a new door and have it put in, as well as repairing my cupped, splintering flooring. Do they really think I'd want to have store credit to buy another one? This failed experiment has cost me well over $1000 so far. I'd suggest avoiding any of this company's products, and particularly this one.BusyBadgerMom

Unfortunately the door only works with the collar which is junk and even after you buy their expensive batteries will not work because it is junk. Easy to chip your own cat. There is a click every time the cat comes through the door. It scares them from coming through. I think over time they will get used to it. Great for keeping out an unwanted animal.bowlingredgoat

We were having a hard time trying to teach our 4 month old puppy to bark to let us know when it was bathroom time. We felt a doggy door was the next option. We did not have a door that directly addressed our back yard. The only option was a wall doggy door. I was kind of reluctant to cut a hole in a wall. It was either a hole in the wall or get rid of the dog. Long story short is the installation was breeze and in one day our puppy was house broken. This is a great door! My Frenchie figured it out, but she is a little hesitant because the magnets are so strong she doesn’t think they’ll open. She just has to put her bull head against it and she can get in and out very easily. My builder put it in and was pretty impressed with the whole thing. It was a fairly inexpensive solution to a tough problem when one has a dog but doesn’t want to ruin their house. This is replacing another great item that was a door filler for a sliding door but I got tired of walking sideways through, constantly hitting it, and jaring it out of place. We love this dog door for our German Shepard and yellow lab-loved it actually- until a visiting Great Pyrenees went through it and came out the other side wearing it, frame and all. So basically it was a great door for three years until it met its match. Had one of these for about ten years and bought a new one. One of our dogs damaged the old one by trying to run in when the panel was inserted to keep him out while a worker was in the house. This broke two of the screws away from the plastic frame. Even though it says aluminum pet door, the only aluminum part is the white door frame. The brown frame around it is plastic as is the wall tunnel. Since we now needed to replace the flaps, it costs just as much to get a whole new one as it did to replace the flaps. Now for the new one – Had it installed for less than a month and spring loaded knob on insert panel is broken (called for free replacement under one year warranty). Door panel flap lengths are adjustable, but don't seem as thick (and durable) as old ones. If this hadn't been a replacement project of an existing one, not sure if I would have decided to install this one or look at other options.AZTom

I am on my 3rd PetSafe door. I started with a smart door but I got tired of constantly changing batteries. I have 4 dogs. I got the double flap door. After about 1.5 years the plastic piece that holds the flaps started to break (little pieces at a time). There is no replacement part for this so I had to purchase a new door. PetSafe did give me a reduced price. Now, I have gorilla tape holding my one remaining flap on this door,since the same part is breaking once again. This part is cheaply made and I feel like you should at least offer a replacement part. Now, I'm facing buying another door…again.Crazydogmom

This is a great dog door for a medium size dog. It is a deluxe unit with dual flaps for maximum weather protection. It also has a slide-in closing door with a secure lock. It looks stylish and it fits (one of our main concerns) through the section of the house that has brick. We had a professional install the unit, unfortunately, it was a little higher on the outside than the dog would have liked (see picture above) which hindered her from going back into the door. I solved this problem by ordering something called the Ten-Eighty Mini Launch Ramp for about $30. It is designed for skate boards and bicycles but it will also work in this application. I needed a little modification to sit flush with the wall and I had it carpeted so the dog wouldn't slip in cold weather. Now the dog goes in and out of the door effortlessly. I hope that this idea helps others in consideration of this great dog door.norman3670

My old cat chooses to live out. She has beds in the greenhouse but as she has got older other cats are in her beds and nicking her food. Now you can see the smug look on her face when they appear at the door and can't get in. She is so much happier and I can monitor she is eating enough. I purchased this cat flap at a competitive price. It was delivered promptly and was well packaged. I engaged a fitter from the people who supplied the door and this has now been completed. Our door was a UPVC door with aluminium insert. Fitting took this skilled person just about two hours. He had to make adjustments to make it fit for purpose. I finally found a cat flap which was small enough to fit into the existing circular cut in the sliding door window. The mounting adaptor saved us $550 dollars as we previously could not change the existing circular cut to a square to accommodate the new microchip flap. The whole window would have had to be replaced otherwise. It only took a few attempts for our cat to adjust to the microchip flap opening up. No more stray cats visiting our house!Theresa B.

I moved houses and had a door just like this. I wanted the same type of swinging doors instead of flaps so I got the exact model that I had before. My dogs were used to it and it is a very good quality door. The first one we had was mounted on an exterior door. The new one is mounted on an exterior wall, and leads right into the dog run. Every year my wife and I go on vacation for a week or more and we felt more secure with this door versus the plastic versions. Our old house had a plastic dog door and that was how we used to break in when locked out. It was so easy, and therefore easy for a burglar to break in, so we made the investment in this door mainly for security reasons. NOTE: Once we received our large Plexidor my 6ft 170lbs butt could crawl through it, therefore, if not locked so could anyone else. So when you leave for vacation…lock it. It secures fairly well. Installation: You will install the door side on the inside which leaves the recessed portion facing the exterior -making it really obvious that you have a dog door. My remedy is to build & place a dog house on the exterior side of the door; so no-one would ever see or know the dog door exists! It simply looks like the dog is going in & out of his dog house! Plus it could act as a "mud" room to help clean their paws before going into the house. I actually choose to install ours into the garage, especially after the first rain when I saw all of the wet paw prints all the floor from my 80lb black lab. I don't know how people keep the floors clean when installed into a living room? Since this is our third purchase, we obviously love this product. It is so nice to not have to let our dogs out and in several times during the day. The more dogs you have the better. No problems with rain. Keeps heat in our house during the winter and cold air during the summer. We currently have two Bichons.Camille B.
