Large Dog Door Insert For Sale (2024 Update)

It wasn’t till I saw the warning on the box that I was aware the door insert was not compatible with my vinyl door. However, I found it was not difficult to adapt it. I would not have ordered it if the warnings on the box were as stressed on the on-line ad. At the same time I’m happy I bought it, as it is securely in place, is of high quality and the price made it a bargain.LFritz

This is a well made pet door. However, you will find it difficult to get a good seal with your existing slider. I had to buy additional weather stripping to put on each side of the pet door. I bought this for my kitties and took awhile for them to using the flap to exit because of the strong magnet at the bottom of the flap.Diane

But not together at the same time…let me finish. So I have a wonderful rotund cat but I don't let her out, so no go for her. However, If you have a portable A/C and need a way to expunge the hot air though a sliding glass door, here you go. Just put the robot arm through and you're good. The only other thing I added was weather stripping on both sides, so I'd have some padding between the door and frame. Lastly, I just balled up some rags to seal between the square cat flap and round A/C hose. So, as a cat door, yeah it seems solid. easy to adjust and strong enough to not give up. The door, although plastic can swing both ways and lock accordingly.KiBu

I purchased this door at least 5 years ago and every year we’re replacing the plastic adapter that attaches to the hinges that hold/support the flaps. We’ve had to order the whole door replacement kit to fix this problem and now once again, we have to order a whole kit for these My pictures show the extra parts collection needed to replace the 4 plastic adapters and the adapters after they break and crack from dogs using the door on a daily basis.Edman

Most important part of the doors is the flap hinge mechanism and it's made of cheap plastic which fails after the warranty period expires. For the cost of these doors, they should be better built.Dan S

Excellent opening size for our pet who is 18 lbs. I purchased the Medium opening. Our sliding door is a custom height of 12 FT, not a normal height, so using the extension included with the patio panel still doesn’t reach the top of the sliding door, which of course is not the problem of the manufacturer of this product. We remedied the problem by using and cutting to size a disposable hard foam cooler, fitted with a foam edge window and door sealer in order to eliminate cool and hot air from coming in and out. It’s not perfect, but works for our pet and for our use.Grace

I currently own 2 doggy door slider inserts from a competitor brand. I got this PetSafe insert to replace one of my inserts that is worn out, and I am so glad I did! At first glance you can see that the PetSafe is far superior to my competitor door. Upon quick exploration, I could feel that the PetSafe door was much better quality. The PetSafe door itself is more substantial and heavy duty just off the bat. I like that spring-loaded panel at the top of the door is taller (than my competitor brand) so that it can accommodate more sizes of sliders. I have multiple different heights of sliders at my house so that gives me more options of doors for me to place the insert in. This is beneficial to me when I have a party for example because I can give my dogs indoor/outdoor access to a secluded part of my house when young children are over. The second part I really like is the extra security with the locking panel to close the doggy door. Whereas my competitor version only has a plastic lock that could easily be broken into by potential intruders, the PetSafe has a very secure metal pin lock. Third, I appreciate that this insert has a slight tint to it. My competitor version does not. When I open the doggy door in the early morning in my bedroom I "hook" my curtains around my original slider handle for my dogs to access the door and I go back to sleep. The tinting on this insert is at least some attempt to block out the daylight. Finally, I like that they include some weather striping to help combat some unwanted drafts. Although I would recommend to combo the weather stripping provided with foam weather stripping to really complete the seal. Overall, I highly recommend this PetSafe doggy door insert, their attention to detail is prevalent making their door superior to competitors.MamaBear34

I'm giving it three stars because it is working but for the price, I expected a higher-quality item. In some ways this unit is too thin for my patio door track and is floppy, and in other ways – specifically the attachment brackets and the door "latch" – it is too wide. I had to come up with another way to fix the panel in place, then insert foam tape because it kept flapping when the door was used or the wind blew too hard, and then buy separate security bars for the patio door. Not ideal. And I also plan that I will need to remove it if I leave for an extended period of time, as this thing is a serious security vulnerability in the home's perimeter now…not that most adults don't already fit through an extra large pet door opening. I wish this had a full closure panel – aluminum, hinged. Maybe I should have just made something custom since I can't cut a hole in the wall of my rental house for an electronic security dog door.Julie D

In our old house we had this door and loved it. The door was on the north side of the house but always kept the wind, cold and snow out! So naturally when purchasing a different house, my first purchase was another door! This truly is THE BEST door! We substituted metal screws for the plastic ones. I would highly recommend this doggy door. This doggy door is very well made and sturdy. It has a nice piece to slide in when you want to block the door. My friend came over to install it yesterday and the instructions were clear and it even came with a template to help with an uncomplicated install. The advertisement for this door does not give you the measurements needed for the wall or door opening which would help in determined the size you order. They are not clear on the fact that this unit is for the door and not the wall. They offer a wall kit for more money if you intend to install this in the wall. The wall kit is not needed if you are a handyman type person but you will have to go to the hardware store and buy longer screws because they are only available when you buy the wall kit. Why not just put the screws in the kit to start with.Otis2

We have not installed it in the door yet…but just looking at it, it looks sturdy and indestructible, which is good, because my dog literally eats and tears the doors with the flexible plastic. I have 7 dogs of varying sizes who use this door constantly. The only fault I find is that the rubber gaskets between the slats in the door wear out . Everything else lasts a very long time. I tweaked it by putting piano hinges between the slats and that has extended its use a lot. If I could buy just that part the door would last practically forever! Having two doggy doors has always been a problem. The prior doors were made of plastic and with our weather changing all the time, the would break apart quickly but not with these new Metal doors. And the flap is even made better. Couldn't be more pleased!!priddyclover

After comparing price, style and weather insulation, I found Petco had the right patio door. It was easy to assemble, looks great with the matching white trimming and seals perfect, no cold air coming in. The price was just right compare to others. I knew when I ordered it it was going to be a little big, cut 3 inches off the bottom an fit perfectly to my sliding door. Everything included that I was to get in box. We were having a hard time trying to teach our 4 month old puppy to bark to let us know when it was bathroom time. We felt a doggy door was the next option. We did not have a door that directly addressed our back yard. The only option was a wall doggy door. I was kind of reluctant to cut a hole in a wall. It was either a hole in the wall or get rid of the dog. Long story short is the installation was breeze and in one day our puppy was house broken. This is a great door! My Frenchie figured it out, but she is a little hesitant because the magnets are so strong she doesn’t think they’ll open. She just has to put her bull head against it and she can get in and out very easily. My builder put it in and was pretty impressed with the whole thing. It was a fairly inexpensive solution to a tough problem when one has a dog but doesn’t want to ruin their house. This is replacing another great item that was a door filler for a sliding door but I got tired of walking sideways through, constantly hitting it, and jaring it out of place. We love this dog door for our German Shepard and yellow lab-loved it actually- until a visiting Great Pyrenees went through it and came out the other side wearing it, frame and all. So basically it was a great door for three years until it met its match. We are house-sitting our daughter's dog for a few months and needed a simpler way for the dog to get out of and into the house. This pet door device is adequate. My primary concern was that our home would no longer be lockable, but we were able to secure the door and device adequately. The biggest negative is that, although the dog is small on weights only 25 lbs. (well shy of the weight limit advertised), it is a tight squeeze for him to get through. We are glad we got it. Have had this door for 3 years and it's still going strong. was easy to install, but I have to replace the seal strip every year or so. Big enough door for my husky, but not too high for my miniature collie to get through. I have only encountered one problem, the flap is a bit on the loud side. But I don't know if that's something that can actually be fixed without affecting how well the flap closes.Madison

First off, I bought the medium sized door (11×8), which is claimed to be for medium pets weighing up to 35 pounds. There would be no way a pet weighing that much could fit through the door. This size door is more for small pets (cats, which I have that weigh 10 to 15 pounds). So I made the right choice by going bigger. It's the perfect size for them, and they get through the door comfortably. A small door would have been a tight squeeze. I installed this pet door against the patio door that doesn't slide. That was the only way that made sense, and would also provide some form of security. Installing this against the sliding door would not work, would not seal, and would not lock. Buy yourself some extra weather stripping (the soft stuff). The hard weather stripping provided with this door is useless. Be prepared to improvise and buy extra hardware to actually make this door fit securely and work with the patio doors. My extra expenses were $35. All in all, I'd recommend the door, but be prepared to do a fair amount of work to make it fit securely. But still this is not buglar proof. It will be an easy access point for someone to break into your home. I don't see how this, or any pet door, could be made completely secure.Mensa8

Using this in the sliding screen door that goes out to our screened porch. Kitty loves it! The install was a little tricky only because of the fact that it was a door we installed it on and not an easily removable one. I doubt the longevity a little bit, because it seems like I may need to add a little tape to seal it better or something. I’m nervous that with one strong push from the kids or dogs that the entire screen with tear. Overall, though, I think it’s a nice option!!boflay1022

My senior Calicos are sky walkers. They love bird watching on our 2nd floor laundry room roof from there they walk along the privacy fence onto a shed then jump down to bask in the sun in the fenced in garden below. I LOVE their independence! Now with bug weather fast approaching it was time to think of doggie/cat doors. What a bargain these are sturdy they look good and are NOT cheap plastic. I have one upstairs on my window screen and one downstairs on the patio door screen. My girls and a Jack Russell Terrier can come and go as they please. This item is so flimsy that it cannot in any form be regarded as secure. I had to screw it into place because the twist tabs were not strong enough to hold it at the right height. We still didn't think it was strong enough so I bought a melamine panel to replace it. Thought at least I could sell it for $20. Alas no. First one I bought was faulty out of the box. The locking screws didn’t work. Bunnings replaced it and the second one the flap dropped off on my dogs back after 2 weeks. She’s a small bulldog and she has the medium door. She fits through the hole perfectly but the flap doesn’t seem to be secured properly. I’ll return it again I guess.Andreea

Awful product. Not worth the cost. Should have just purchased the more expensive version. Flap is tight and difficult for my labradors to fit through, no option to close of the flap if needed to lock the dogs out, the required extension is an additional cost and it doesn't sit flush in the door at all. I moved houses and had a door just like this. I wanted the same type of swinging doors instead of flaps so I got the exact model that I had before. My dogs were used to it and it is a very good quality door. The first one we had was mounted on an exterior door. The new one is mounted on an exterior wall, and leads right into the dog run. It can be locked with a key for security. I love this door.vtanco

I bought the wall mount door. My handyman had a little difficulty installing the "tunnel" between the inside wall and outside siding, but otherwise installation seemed to go smoothly. My dogs, who had previously used a flap design door, were reluctant at first to use the new style door, but learned to use it in a day and have no problem going in/out at lightning speed. So far (I've had it about 6 weeks), it seems to be working great, and I'm anxious to see how it does in the winter. My only complaint is that I had to separately buy the attachment to slide the door to cover the opening when I do not want the dogs to go out. For the price, that should have been included.kenns

Installation was not easy. According to the instructions all you need is a jigsaw and a screwdriver…HA! False! All in all it was a 10 hour project between my Engineer dad and me (Thank God I didn't attempt it by myself!) -Cosmetically 10 out 10 -Durability 10 out 10 -Ease of Use 10 out 10 -Cost 7 out 10 -Installation 4 out 10 I shopped around a long time for a quality dog door, and this was the best I could find. A month ago when I purchased my large Plexidor w/wall insert there were no reviews, so I was little leery to spend over $500 on a DOG DOOR! In the end I went with this door for security reasons. Every year my wife and I go on vacation for a week or more and we felt more secure with this door versus the plastic versions. Our old house had a plastic dog door and that was how we used to break in when locked out. It was so easy, and therefore easy for a burglar to break in, so we made the investment in this door mainly for security reasons. NOTE: Once we received our large Plexidor my 6ft 170lbs butt could crawl through it, therefore, if not locked so could anyone else. So when you leave for vacation…lock it. It secures fairly well. Installation: You will install the door side on the inside which leaves the recessed portion facing the exterior -making it really obvious that you have a dog door. My remedy is to build & place a dog house on the exterior side of the door; so no-one would ever see or know the dog door exists! It simply looks like the dog is going in & out of his dog house! Plus it could act as a "mud" room to help clean their paws before going into the house. I actually choose to install ours into the garage, especially after the first rain when I saw all of the wet paw prints all the floor from my 80lb black lab. I don't know how people keep the floors clean when installed into a living room? Since this is our third purchase, we obviously love this product. It is so nice to not have to let our dogs out and in several times during the day. The more dogs you have the better. This is the perfect entry and exit for your pets. We have a small dog, a full size pit and then a oversize pit and they all use the door with no issues. There is also a close off door that you can attach for when you leave for several days or when you don't want your pet outside.shirley.k
