Our German Shepherd absolutely loved this cooling mat! He would lay on it every time he came in from outside. About 6 months ago we purchased this and then a 4 months later, the seam started to rip in one area, causing the mat to leak. He is not a chewer besides his Kongs so we know for a fact that it wasn't that. We followed the care instructions and filled it to the correct amount. We exchanged it and then it happened again. I have a 13 year old Giant Schnauzer that can’t get up without help so she can’t cool herself off and can’t rotate to get more comfortable. I have purchased more than 15 of these Cool Bed IIIs over the past 10 years only because K&H Products has a patent on these beds and are not available from anyone else. Everyone I've purchased has leaked at the seams within a year. The 2 year warranty is only good for the original purchase and not for the replacement mattresses. The latest purchase leaked immediately after adding 3 gallons of water to the large Cool Bed III, which is half the recommended amount of water. Contacting K&H to obtain a replacement is quite involved requiring one to destroy the leaking mattress so that it cannot be used and take photos of it to send to the company. My dog loves this mat – at first he was a bit stand-offish about it, but soon he went over and laid down on it and it was immediate acceptance. It is a bit slick to the touch, and I think that was what he didn't like at first. We spend a fair amount of time outside on the deck and in the back yard this time of year, and it gets hot out there. I put this pad under a table for some shade and the dog heads for it every time we go out there. I also tested it myself – it is cooling to the touch, and I put it in my living room chair to try out it's ability to deliver on it's claim of being a cooling pad. The cooling mat is a good idea, but I think most dogs won't like that it is stiff plastic. I have a boarder collie who gets very hot and loves the coolness of the tile floor. However laying on the hard tile floor is very bad for her joints and makes her stiff. I thought she would definitely go right to the mat as it is cushiony and she seeks out cool places to lay. But she would NOT use it, no matter where I put it (any of her favorite cooler places). The mat is a great idea – it is cushiony and cool, but if your dog is at all finicky, it probably won't like the "plastic-ness" of it. I also noticed after my dog layed on it for a longer period of time it had actually become warm. Last year I saw cooling pads for dogs on Groupon. The price was good. It matched this one! But, I doubted they really worked. I was wrong. They work great! My dog will often get up from where he is lying and go over to lie on his cooling mat, even in winter if the house is too hot for him! Sadly, the gel on those mats didn’t last long. I habe a cattle dog malamutte who gets hot at about 68 degrees. I live in the desert southwest so it is very hot. I use this product when we are outside camping or when we go to the lake on the boat. It doesnt get super cold but it does get cool which helps him stay comfortable. I also get the fabric wet if I need it to be even cooler.Rose
I love this product for the outdoor cat we care for. I put it in our garage, which he can access, and he comes in and sleeps on it during the day. It is a simple design where you put ice water in the cooler part. A small submersible pump sucks out the water through a tube that travels around the mat and dumps back into the cooler part. The pump is battery operated with 4 D Cell batteries. I did not want to keep buying batteries, so I bought an electric submersible fish aquarium pump for $6.99 that I easily attached to the tubing and then plug in. I then add ice water and small blue ice free packs to the cooler and it lasts for the day. I put a towel over the pad so it doesn't get dirty. I read other comments on other websites, and I believe some improvements have been made to the design: Most of the tubing is now insulated. The pump that comes with the unit is silent. And the connectors keep the tubing from leaking. I looked on the Akoma website and these products do not appear on their website anymore. So if you want one, you may need to buy one sooner rather than later.Nancy

I bought a large cot for my 14 yr old 60 pound shepherd mix. She gets hot lying on her incontinence pads, thought she would love the mesh. It was easy to assemble, light weight, sturdy mesh (her toenails haven't gotten stuck or poked through). But she has not willingly chosen to lie on it. She gets on it if I put a treat there but won't settle on it. She can't stretch out on her side due to the raised sides and back. Her hips aren't the best so she doesn't seem able to spin and flop down onto it. If it had a cloth bolster around the 3 sides instead of the metal tube it might work better for her. My 12 and half year old Finnish Lapphund doesn't take to new things quickly and most times outright rejects them. He worked out pretty quickly this was working in his favour. He has worked out to stay on it for about 3 hours and change to the second one ( I purchased 2 ) then repeat back to the first as it has cooled back down. I love that he loves them and he is happy. I also love the quality of the product compared to other brands. My trouble is now I need another 2 for my new baby girl Finnish Lapphund I'm about to own and Pet Circle have sold out.
