The SureFlap door uses a microchip to activate the cat door. My cat has always had a cat door but used to wear a magnet on his collar that would activate the door. Now I don't have to worry if he loses his collar because he can still get in. Very easy to program. Just push one button and the next cat (or dog) to walk through the door is recorded for the door. The door also has a curfew setting. This was gold to me. I had been paying a cat sitter $10 a day to open and close the cat door any day I was gone. Easily set time it opens or locks for the night. Installation was a breeze as I replaced a manual cat door to this microchip controlled large cat door. My cats use a regular cat door so switching to this new door was really easy for them and the controls made it easy for me. Two cats have microchips implanted and the third uses the collar type and the Sure Flap Microchip LARGE Door works seamlessly for all. I used the unlocked mode till all three cats used the door than set it for ID registrations till all three had been through and registered. After this I set it for 10 second delay, then 2 second delay and now no delay. What an excellent quality door and so easy to program. The Sureflap is a great product, easy to install and by following the setup guide, quite easy to program. It has stoped the neighbors stray cat from making itself at home stealing our own cats food and the fights when it would just come inside. My only problem is to somehow get our own pet cat to want to use it. Seems to be quite stuborn and will not exert enough nose pressure on the flap to overcome the magnetic latch. I may need to carefully dismantle the unit to remove the magnet and then see what happens. I would definitely recomend this product to anyone who wants to have control over both movements of not only their own cat but anyone elses as well.Graham

Learn from my mistake and run far away!!! This door was somewhat convenient when first installed, but I quickly found that the transmitter didn't always work, which left my dog inside or outside at times. However, with the first hard rain, this door became a disaster. The door flap leaked water all over my floor, both under the flap and down through the body of the dog door. I didn't discover the flooding until a large puddle had developed, warping and splintering my hardwood. I spent two hours on my knees mopping with towels and trying to seal things with duct tape as the rain continued to flood in under the flap opening. When I called the company, I was told that, since the door had been purchased over 90 days prior, that "the credit card company won't let us do a refund so we can't" (obvious untruth) and that the owner would only let me return it for store credit. They had no interest in finding out what the problem/defect was and trying to cure it or change it so as not to do this to other consumers. I'm was already out the cost of the purchase, hiring a contractor, and having it installed, and now I have to buy a new door and have it put in, as well as repairing my cupped, splintering flooring. Do they really think I'd want to have store credit to buy another one? This failed experiment has cost me well over $1000 so far. Unfortunately the door only works with the collar which is junk and even after you buy their expensive batteries will not work because it is junk. After reading all of the reviews, the VERY common problem is the hinge. This is going to be my 3rd or 4th door and second to purchase (the sizable hole is hard to find a replacement for), most EVERYONE has had the exact same broken and weak point of the hinge. Some of these comments are from long enough ago, you would think that the company would look at the common problems and try and fix the issue. I've had this door for a year now, and after a year of modifying, and remodifying, I give. Simply not a great door for strong dogs. Our doberman broke the door out initially, it was put back in place. The 2nd time he broke it out some of the plastic fasteners broke off. My SO ended up modifying the door with an aluminum strip and all new hardware. It's been broken off several times even with the new modifications. The key backs fall off and we didn't end up using them anyways to begin with. The frame is solid, we got the wall kit which is flimsy and had to seal ourselves but nonetheless it's installed. I'd love to order another model that will fit the already permanent opening. As of current, our heat's turned off until we figure out what to do to fix the door. Purchased the door about a month ago. We have 4 dogs ranging in size from 6.5 lb to 60 lb. All of them use the door even the little guy. The big dog did not need any training at all he instinctively new when it went click he could go! I was concerned about the reviews but it seemed to me that these were all very large dogs by height and the photos of the installs seemed low to me. I would recommend the product. No more getting up two or three times a night. YAAA I installed it myself, granted I am more of a handyman than most, but I am also over the 65 mark +. So I would expect the young bucks to do it even faster. But you do need to have a supply of the D cells. Batteries are not what they used to be and you only get about a month or a little less use. I have 7 dogs of varying sizes who use this door constantly. The only fault I find is that the rubber gaskets between the slats in the door wear out . Everything else lasts a very long time. I tweaked it by putting piano hinges between the slats and that has extended its use a lot. If I could buy just that part the door would last practically forever! We have a seven month old puppy with tiny bladder syndrome so she needs to go outside frequently. However, we also have two cats with feline leukemia and they must stay inside. We ordered this door and it arrived quickly. It took a few hours to install it in the porch wall, mostly time consuming because of the type of wall we had. Once it was in, it only took a couple of days to teach the pup to use it. It’s not very loud so that is good. The delay between the time the dog approaches the door and the time it opens is fairly quick. We were a bit worried that the male cat (who wants to be the man about town) would follow the dog out because the delay from the time the dog goes out and the door shuts seems rather long. However, the cat realized pretty quickly that he couldn’t get outside by himself so he lost interest in trying after a couple of days. We are quite pleased with the dog door. The only problem we had is the collar that the sensor is on. It didn’t stay snug around her neck so she managed to take it off and chew up the sensor. We are ordering a new sensor and I am going to sew it directly onto her regular collar and hope that will fix the problem. Excellent opening size for our pet who is 18 lbs. I purchased the Medium opening. Our sliding door is a custom height of 12 FT, not a normal height, so using the extension included with the patio panel still doesn’t reach the top of the sliding door, which of course is not the problem of the manufacturer of this product. We remedied the problem by using and cutting to size a disposable hard foam cooler, fitted with a foam edge window and door sealer in order to eliminate cool and hot air from coming in and out. It’s not perfect, but works for our pet and for our use.Grace
I currently own 2 doggy door slider inserts from a competitor brand. I got this PetSafe insert to replace one of my inserts that is worn out, and I am so glad I did! At first glance you can see that the PetSafe is far superior to my competitor door. Upon quick exploration, I could feel that the PetSafe door was much better quality. The PetSafe door itself is more substantial and heavy duty just off the bat. I like that spring-loaded panel at the top of the door is taller (than my competitor brand) so that it can accommodate more sizes of sliders. I have multiple different heights of sliders at my house so that gives me more options of doors for me to place the insert in. This is beneficial to me when I have a party for example because I can give my dogs indoor/outdoor access to a secluded part of my house when young children are over. The second part I really like is the extra security with the locking panel to close the doggy door. Whereas my competitor version only has a plastic lock that could easily be broken into by potential intruders, the PetSafe has a very secure metal pin lock. Third, I appreciate that this insert has a slight tint to it. My competitor version does not. When I open the doggy door in the early morning in my bedroom I "hook" my curtains around my original slider handle for my dogs to access the door and I go back to sleep. The tinting on this insert is at least some attempt to block out the daylight. Finally, I like that they include some weather striping to help combat some unwanted drafts. Although I would recommend to combo the weather stripping provided with foam weather stripping to really complete the seal. I'm giving it three stars because it is working but for the price, I expected a higher-quality item. In some ways this unit is too thin for my patio door track and is floppy, and in other ways – specifically the attachment brackets and the door "latch" – it is too wide. I had to come up with another way to fix the panel in place, then insert foam tape because it kept flapping when the door was used or the wind blew too hard, and then buy separate security bars for the patio door. Not ideal. And I also plan that I will need to remove it if I leave for an extended period of time, as this thing is a serious security vulnerability in the home's perimeter now…not that most adults don't already fit through an extra large pet door opening. I wish this had a full closure panel – aluminum, hinged. Maybe I should have just made something custom since I can't cut a hole in the wall of my rental house for an electronic security dog door.Julie D

This is an AWESOME dog door solution. We purchased ours in 2011 and it works great. INSTALLATION: I’m not handy so we had a carpenter install the door. It wasn’t a problem for him. We live in an old house so rather than cut the original 1920 door, we bought a door from Home Depot. TRAINING OUR DOGS:: It didn’t take long for our dog to learn how to exit the house and reenter the house. WHY I LIKE IT; Versus a flappy cheap plastic door…this has two major advantages (1). More secure. For a large door, a flappy door can be easily broken into (just crawl in!) where this door would require force and would set up an alarm, and (2). Very weatherproof. The seal is tight, so hot air (summer) and cold air (winter) doesn’t continuously lead in. So there is a comfort and a cost savings factor. DURABILITY: In 7 years (Our dog uses the door about 5x a day, so that is about 13,000 up/downs!) we have had 3 issues. The incredible customer service person (Deidre, who has worked there for about 20 years) is extremely knowledgeable. She walked us through one problem in less that 5 minutes. She helped us fix another problem which took about 20 minutes. And the third issue required a new circuit board which under warranty was free (and out of warranty about $80) and once we received it, took about 15 minutes to install. My wife and I used to work at Purina for 17 years and 12 years respectively, so we know alot about dogs and cats. Our jusdgement is this door, although costly up front, is very well worth it. This is a great dog door. I bought it to replace a well used older PetSafe medium door. It took a little longer to install since my door already had a previous door. Mostly it required more trim and fitment time to install, if you have a good grinding tool or hand file set it will really help. The door slides easily in place without binding. It does flex just enough that if someone wanted to enter the house from outside with it closed they could open it. But it is not meant as a security device just to prevent kids and animals from getting out which it does well. It looks great installed, very flush to the door, seals out the drafts really well. All of my dogs including my small pug size mixed breed has no problems going in and out the door. I still need to seal the outside but I'm glad I bought this door.YaheeTech

Window cat door arrived in tact and was very easy to install. Fits snuggly onto window sash using foam strip underneath to block any drafts or openings. The only reason this is not getting 5 stars is that the weather stripping to be used on top of the insert was not wide enough to block the gap between the upper and opened lower window. We ended up using a piece of pipe insulation to block the gap. A section of styrofoam pool noodle is also useable. We also cut a piece of PVC pipe to insert in the window track to keep the lower window from being able to be lifted up as a security measure. It took a little while for our cat to adjust to using the door. Prior to that we had inserted a piece of cardboard with a door size hole in it to see if our cat would use the opening to go from the house to the screened porch and if the regular cat door size would be large enough for him. He used this easily so we ordered the window. We used treats and showed him how to push the door open. He was hesitant to push the door open with his head so we would hold it open for him to go through, lessening how much we would open it every day. He took to using the door unaided to enter the house in 2 days. However he remained hesitant to use it to go out without assistance. Using pieces of tuna as enticement and continuing to partially open the door for him he slowly decided he could use it to go out after a little over a week and after 2 weeks has no problems using the door in either direction.Nancy B
This is without a doubt the best option I could have hoped for my pets needs. First off I have a 50lb Siberian Husky. My dog has to go outside to use the restroom every 2 hours for medical reasons, and I wasn't able to install a dog door at my current residence. After countless attempts to implement something similar, I finally found this dog door/window. I was extremely impressed when I first got it and had no complaints, but recently it really proved its quality. I was skeptical leaving it in the window knowing bad weather was coming, but I decided to test it anyway. It passed flawlessly against direct 70+MPH winds with no water leaks whatsoever. This is my second cat door. I've had a different style on my sliding patio door for several years and all my cats use it. The problem with that one is that it makes the open doorway very narrow for us non-cats. When I saw this I thought it would be better because I hardly ever open the bedroom windows and this room has three windows so I still have two that I can use. From opening the box to having it completely installed took less than 20 minutes. The instructions are simple: raise sash, remove screen, place cat door, release side spring screws, lower sash. Another minute or two to apply the weather seals over the cat door and at the top of the sash. The installation is solid, with no gaps and no rattles. My cats were using it with complete confidence the same afternoon. I have low window sills inside that the cats were already using as perches. I just put a few cinder blocks on the outside of the house for them to have steps down to the grass. If you have higher windows you may want to plan easy approaches on both sides so the cats don't have to jump all the time.lorettayeo

After reading all of the reviews, the VERY common problem is the hinge. This is going to be my 3rd or 4th door and second to purchase (the sizable hole is hard to find a replacement for), most EVERYONE has had the exact same broken and weak point of the hinge. Some of these comments are from long enough ago, you would think that the company would look at the common problems and try and fix the issue. I've had this door for a year now, and after a year of modifying, and remodifying, I give. Simply not a great door for strong dogs. Our doberman broke the door out initially, it was put back in place. The 2nd time he broke it out some of the plastic fasteners broke off. My SO ended up modifying the door with an aluminum strip and all new hardware. It's been broken off several times even with the new modifications. The key backs fall off and we didn't end up using them anyways to begin with. The frame is solid, we got the wall kit which is flimsy and had to seal ourselves but nonetheless it's installed. I'd love to order another model that will fit the already permanent opening. As of current, our heat's turned off until we figure out what to do to fix the door. Purchased the door about a month ago. We have 4 dogs ranging in size from 6.5 lb to 60 lb. All of them use the door even the little guy. The big dog did not need any training at all he instinctively new when it went click he could go! I was concerned about the reviews but it seemed to me that these were all very large dogs by height and the photos of the installs seemed low to me. I would recommend the product. No more getting up two or three times a night. YAAA I installed it myself, granted I am more of a handyman than most, but I am also over the 65 mark +. So I would expect the young bucks to do it even faster. But you do need to have a supply of the D cells. Batteries are not what they used to be and you only get about a month or a little less use. I bought it on line with a few hesitations. It is the only viable option for us with 2 greyhounds that won't use a traditional dog door. It arrived quickly but unfortunately without instructions for the Rfid tags. I installed it using the video supplied which got the basics working. It occasionally struggled to close the door. It took a bit to get to talk to someone (possibly due to covid) but once I could talk to Roger he identified the problem over the phone which I then quickly solved. The unit does work, but when the door is initially opened it kicks the opening side of the door up which forces the other side down, causing the teeth to not grab correctly which then makes a grinding noise. I'm afraid this will damage the teeth over time. Right now I have 5lb weight hanging from the door handle which prevents the kick up so it works the way it is intended. Excellent opening size for our pet who is 18 lbs. I purchased the Medium opening. Our sliding door is a custom height of 12 FT, not a normal height, so using the extension included with the patio panel still doesn’t reach the top of the sliding door, which of course is not the problem of the manufacturer of this product. We remedied the problem by using and cutting to size a disposable hard foam cooler, fitted with a foam edge window and door sealer in order to eliminate cool and hot air from coming in and out. It’s not perfect, but works for our pet and for our use.Grace
The door is well made and easy to install. we bought the large bronze. Only problem we have is that we have 3 dogs and one is a pug, other two are big 80lb even though rated for 100lb dogs and I measured them, for out dogs was a little short., I fixed by adding a small block under raising it an inch. but the 4-5' rise really does work for small dog. The XL version may have been better. But only came in white and more expensive. Been a couple weeks now and the bigger dogs are doing great. Pug, we open the slider for him. Overall well made and works well. Just a matter of getting sized right. May not work as well when you have a mix of small and large dogs.RichardJ
I bought this and installed it myself (after watching the video). Quick and easy install. Took a little coercion to get her to go through the door. She loves it now! Saves me money because now my cold air is not escaping through the open door. And best of all, no more mosquitoes and other bugs coming in my house. 🙂CindyZoey
