Whistle used to have a useful health tracker, but they changed it such that it provides little useful information now. The tracker itself is horrible, and causes more problems than it’s worth. I only really use it when we’re hiking off leash. It takes longer than 30 minutes to connect when I’m trying to find the location of my dog, regardless of whether he’s out of sight or nearby and I see him. And there are plenty of cell towers nearby. One time it did connect and it — falsely — told me he was in the middle of a highway, and I almost caused an accident trying to find him. I since inferred this was false because another time it told me he was 1 mile away, in the middle of the Mississippi River, about 5 seconds after I saw him near me. Whistle makes me have panic attacks more than I would without it. DO NOT BUY unless they make major changes to its connectivity.William McIntire (Billy)
I have had whistles for several years on several dogs, the classic box shaped health + GPS unit has always worked great. When the dog is away from home it updates frequently even in areas with low cell service. I have had two of these health + GPS + units that have the switchable batteries. Neither have worked. They very rarely alert that the dog has left the home area and even when they do, they are unable to track the dog at all. Even on an hour long hike, it never finds the dog even though there are several dogs wearing classic whistles that are operating perfectly. I live in an area that has about 2 bars of cellular service. This may be the problem but that is common around here and in many rural areas. Some of the health features do work but I buy these units to keep track of my dog and these don’t do that. Get the classic box shaped unit, they’re great. Also, the size guide says these switch units fit on very small dogs and cats. They absolutely do not. I have a 21 pound beagle and the switch was completely unusable on her. The classic unit is a little big but works for sure. The switch did fit my 50ish pound lab border collie mix very well. Whistle, if you are listening, the switchable batteries are a good idea but this design doesn’t work. Design something different and stop selling it, it doesn’t work. I don’t know who needs to hear this at your company but don’t sell things that don’t work. Also, fix your size recommendations for it, they are misleading and wrong.
The data collected about my 2 dogs’ health and activity is great. So far we haven’t received any false notifications about them leaving the zone, which was a problem with the Go. And when one of them took off recently while we were far from home, the location tracker was great and more frequently updated than our old Go models. This was true even in close range when she was hiding in the woods nearby in a very rural area of northern NH. My biggest complaint is the collar itself. With the switch, we cannot choose our own collar. Our dogs are both on the low end of the size, which means a constantly floppy end. The larger dog tries to grab her sister’s collar when they wrestle, which is dangerous. And the two small plastic pieces for holding it in place don’t stay put for more than 5 min. It’s driving us bonkers and we are looking for hacks to keep it in place. Also, the metal grommets already look loose after only a month of use. I’m worried about them giving way. Any of ice or new design on the way? The collar quality is not up to Whistle’s standards. ☹️Catherine K.

I switched from Whistle to Tractive for my cat, Knuckles. BEST CHOICE EVER. I find it much, much more accurate than Whistle and the features are awesome! I live on the Columbia River in St. Helens, Oregon. We are remote and surrounded by forest and water. Knuckles (aka “The OG”) likes to walk the “hood” like a mafia Don. I have a dog who loves to escape from the garden. Having spent much of lockdown fencing the garden she still manages to find ways out. If she can't burrow under she goes over. No sooner have I blocked one escape route she has found another. Now with the tracker I receive alerts as soon as she leaves the safety of the garden and I can retrieve her quickly. The peace of mind is well worth the cost. There are other features which are interesting but we don't really use such as how much time she spends asleep per day or how much exercise she takes. The rubber clips which attach the tracker to her collar are rather fragile, but customer support have sent me 3 replacements free of charge. We do get some false alerts that the dog has escaped, but having set the virtual boundary close to the house this is probably bound to happen and I'd rather have this than to miss an escape. Battery life is about 3 days which is more than adequate. The tracker is a little bulky for a small dog (miniature Dachshund) but she's used to it. I hesitated to buy this for a while, since it was a lot of money for me with the subscription cost too. I did a lot of research and finally took the plunge. It’s like a FitBit for dogs as well. It keeps track of how active my dog is, tracks her energy output, sets goals for her and even tracks her sleep/rest times. I find it works really well and it’s so easy to locate her, so the peace of mind it gives is next level. I know some have complained about the service in remote areas, but any GPS requires high signal areas. You need to consider how any GPS products would work if you’re in a remote location, although I’ve done a lot of research on this product and heard quite a few people in remote areas had no issue. I love the battery saving feature where you can mark a “safe zone” for the product to go into power saving mode in. You can click a button to check that the product is still working and online while in the “safe zone”, which is helpful. It charges ridiculously quickly and a single charge can last days if your dog spends time in the “safe zone”. The corresponding app works incredibly well too. It’s not glitched once in months of use and works quickly and smoothly. This product was worth every cent. It’s so well designed and thought out, it’s such a smart little product. absolute junk! I domt know how they claim this is water proof when tape is used on the connection board inside the housing of the collar. I have no idea what it was securing, but I suspect it had something to do with when the unit is being charged. I have 2 chihuahua's and even at level 30 they didn't respond. I only used it for a short while and put it away for winter. When I tried to use it again just recently in the spring I discovered the units didn't work. I guess the scotch tape lost its adhesiveness I bought a pet safe system and level one gave me the result I needed.martha
This really worked awesome. I have a 3 year old golden retriever who constantly barked all day and night. Neighbors called animal control about the barking and they came to our home and warned us. These collars work great with a little bit of time and training. After a year of use, with supervision, I can now take my dogs (Basenji & G.Shep) outside on our 3 acres without the collars because they have now learned the boundaries. My favorite feature of these collars is the nightlight and the beep function. The nightlight is perfect for going out at night and keeping my eyes on where each dog is located. The beep function is fantastic, my dogs have learned the beep means to turn around and come back. During training I used the shock function (level 8 & I did test the level of intensity on my own leg) only a handful of times when absolutely necessary and it's never used now. Both dogs now respond to the beep and if they're chasing a deer they'll stop to the vibrate function. The two CONS I have with these collars are the rubber covers for the progs come off so easily when the dogs are wrestling and get lost constantly. The other con is that I've had the collars close to a year now and the rechargeable batteries within the device are dying. The collars are on charge constantly now so that they are charged up for when they are needed. The collar dies within about 8 hours before it needs a charge even if it's turned off. Whereas when I first got them the charge lasted about a week. This is after treating them correctly, turning off when not in use and only charging when needed.Elizabeth R.
I have used this collar for 2-3 years now, I went with it as it is one of the highest rated collars when researched. I do run into technical difficulties as you do with anything else and have had no problem with having them replaced. I favorite part is the range and diverse control settings. When my dogs are out of the yard, I just hit the sound button and they know they have went to far and to get back. They come usually immediately. My least favorite part is the product does not seem to last very long.. in the two to three years I’ve used this, I have had to get a few replaced and all with different problems. I recently bought a brand new set of two, and I am very happy. I just have a problem with one of them flashing the green light constantly while the device is on and the battery life on that specific collar does not last. I love how the vibration & shock can be set from 0-99. The sound tones are also pitched slightly different for each collar & has the option to add a third collar. I’ve had this for months & the battery in the remote lasts extremely long. I think I’ve only charged it once. The collars last days as well. The only thing I wish was easier is the ability to switch over from each channel. When you switch from shock to vibrate, the first click is to switch over, then the second click actually vibrates the collar (& vice versa). When switching over to the other channel, you have to follow the same procedure. Which is fine for normal circumstances. But, when it’s an emergent situation, that extra time it takes to shock/ vibrate the other collar can make a huge difference & lead to a struggle in a stressful situation.Erin

It is not user friendly. The icons for the dog and your location are too small and the contrast on the screen makes it hard to see the little icons in sunny conditions. The collar that came in the box is not bright green as it shows on the box. It is a medium green, harder to see on the dog than the bright green I thought I was getting. Sportdog training collars have changed our lives. We have used them on our recently deceased Great Dane, our 4 year-old Walker Hound, 4 month old Bloodhound & 5 month old Great Dane puppy. We have used an older 100 yard collar a 425X & are waiting for the 825X to come in the mail. Not only do the sportdog collars work for "recall" they work for other basic commands like "NO", "drop-it" "settle". We always train our dogs on voice and hand commands as much as possible before using the collars. It certainly helps when our puppies are trying to chase or attack some yard rabbits, chickens ducks or goats. I do find if you are using the collar the battery life is only about a 2-4 hrs of working time. I wish they could have an external battery pack of some degree or another to help on exciting days. Price for product is on point. The only thing I wish sportdog would do, is come out with a cat sized collar. My Bengal is a nutbar, like they all are, and has a taste for killing. It sure would be nice to have one for him when he is slaying yard rabbits or trying to take down ducks in the pond to give him a little zap to help save lives. I liked the idea of a collar with vibration and sound versus shock or static. Didn't want to hurt my dog, just wanted to get his attention. The vibration works the best on mine, he learned within a day or two that when I called his name, I wanted him to come to me. In fact, it worked so well that I no longer need the collar for the negative behavior he displayed when I first bought it. And that's a darned good thing because an updated to the app in late April this year (changed from one app to another, forced not by choice) has rendered the collar worthless. The app itself is impossible to connect to the collar 99% of the time. If I was buying a collar again, I'd buy the same collar but would NOT opt for the phone app. I'd get it with a remote. I literally just bought this yesterday! It is such a waste of money. The fact that it disconnects so much, and takes forever to reconnect to the collar is a terrible feature. I’ve always been hesitant because I always thought that the smart colors shock the dog but I do enjoy the vibration aspect of it because it’s not harmful to my baby. It’s helping me control behaviors like staying off of the furniture and not pulling on the leash and within the short time we’ve use it I can already see you a little bit of improvement on his behavior in these areas. He will walk next to the couch but will not get on it he’ll lay in front of it which is what we wanted. And he’s also stopped tugging at the leash on walks. I am definitely Happy with this product. I also like that you can control the level of the vibration on the collar. So what we did was we gradually increase the intensity of the vibration until we knew that he could fill it we know that it would probably be a pretty high because he does have thick for him but it startles him it doesn’t it doesn’t hurt him and that’s what’s most important. I had borrowed the same collar from my daughter for about a month, but she needed it back, so for the past two months he had begun to get a little independent in the woods. As soon as I put the new Arc collar around his neck, he was a changed dog. Even without paging him, he began to hunt about 75 yards out and would return to check on me every few minutes. Whenever he gets out of sight, and seems to wander too long, I simply "page" him about three seconds and he comes running. Only twice in the past week have I had to stimulate him, somewhere between level 6 and 11. Then for a day or two after that, only the pager button is needed to turn him around. This really is a tremendously different product. 127 settings seemed overwhelming to me. As I use this more and more as I train my dog, I’m able to see what that really means. In the past, collars I’ve used only had a few settings, so moving up or down a notch so to say was a dramatic difference, while the dogtra allows me to fine tune the stim very minimally until I find my dogs “number” for the variety of situations. I bought the Dogtra 280C to use with my very active and agile 1 year old Toy Austrailian Sheppard for stopping unwanted behaviors like digging up my lawn and attacking the cat. The transmitter and receiver both hold charges for days, and easily sync by just holding the two units next to one another at the red dots for a second. This was a game changer for our dog. Several very bad behaviors/habits were corrected within a week of getting this collar. Obviously your results will depend on your dog and how you use this, but this was an invaluable tool for training our dog. Some details: 1) We find that the charge lasts a couple of days (we take it off and turn it off at night when the dog is sleeping). 2) Range is at least a few hundred yards. Never have tested out to the advertised 400 yd range. 3) The vibrate feature is very helpful (and pretty much the only thing we have had to use since the initial training). 4) The "Nick" shock feature is a great attention getter for the dog. 5) The range of shock levels provides everything from you can hardly notice it to pretty intense.In PDX
I purchased this and trained my dog Neko with it with a professional trainer a few months ago. This device was a lifesaver. Neko is a Shiba inu and they are extremely high energy, love to run and are very intelligent and curious. Neko escaped my fenced yard 4 times by digging, and I have heard that some Shibas can jump and scale fences up to 8ft. So I defitly needed something. I’ve tested this on myself and the “shock” is not so bad if you stay below 20 it just allows the dog to “hear” you in stressful or loud/distracting situations, and it lets them connect the command with the action without you chasing them or forcing them into it. I have never purchased a training collar before but I was desperate with a eight month old puppy who had some habits that seemed impossible to break. He was dominating our entire existence with his very anti social and unwanted behaviour. Bought this last fall for upland hunting and general training for my GSP. Worked amazing. I had it in sub zero temps in the dakotas pheasant hunting and got it soaking wet duck hunting, functioned flawlessly. I very seldom have to shock him now, he responds to the vibrate function. I bought this after researching for several months. I have a buy once cry once mentality and am glad I paid a little extra. I love the digital reading so I know exactly what level of stimulation I am giving him. I actually tried it out on myself before I put it on my dog. I really couldn't feel anything until I got to level 20. My dog started acknowledging it at level 30, and that is where it has stayed. I haven't ever needed any more than that. Range is good, I do not like the settings for the shock control are not able to be locked! You can set it on setting 30 and put transmitter in pocket. When you remove it from pocket it maybe on 50! This product was exactly as described. The length of the two collars are long enough to be worn on a smaller or a larger dog. I have two boxers and have plenty of collar length so I feel that they would fit a very large dog. The control works well and is easy to manipulate. I can easily use the vibrate and shock buttons. The only "oops" thing that could happen is hitting the control shut off and shock button at the same time. The control shut off button is on one side of the unit and the shock buttons are on the opposite side. So when I am holding the control unit in one hand to shut it off, I have to be careful not to push the shock button in response to the pressure I am putting on the shut off button. Therefore I remove the collars before I shut the unit off. I am very happy with this product.boxer mum

I have had this for over a year now and it still works just as good as the day I bought it. I recomend this to anyone that wants to train their dog. I may have used the shocking part maybe 5 times at the most now the only thing I use on it is the warning because my dog knows when I call him he comes running. I have also trained him not to go out of my gate and the only thing I had to do was warn him when he got close to the gate and he has learned not to even go close to the gate. He is now 7 years old and when it is his time to go to heaven the next puppy I get I will defiantly be introducing my new dog this collar. It is the easiest way to train a dog. I don't think it is to harsh once they know what happens to them if they don't listen you never haft to use the shock part anymore.
