Best Inground Invisible Dog Fence (Jan 2023 Update)

I have a pup that is a large breed, he looks like I been feeding him steak and potatoes cause he's so dang big. He is ALL puppy though. Chews on everything loves running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Been trying to train him to chill with me, yeah, right. He wants to play. And because he wants to play, he wants to run every stinkin where. Decided, for my sanity as well as his safety, I'd get this thing. Put the flags out, set it on a low static charge, and it didn't take long before he figured it out. You DO have to WORK a dog with this. It's not just a plug it up and watch their hair shoot up when they get popped. Walked him around the perimeter for 7 days, he sees and sniffs the flags. After that, I let him run around, and he got popped maybe 3 times, and figured it out. Now he's pretty dang happy, and I can let him rip around with zoomies while I work in the yard. I have a 2 yr old LARGE French Mastiff that weighs 180ish! I bought with the (red in color) “stubborn” collar. We previously installed a wired underground fence. (Which I have to mention took 2 FULL DAYS TO INSTALL AND READY TO USE!!) My Bo would realize he was close to the boundary, take a step or two back then take a run right through it, with no second thought!!! We watched him do this several times. I guess he was thinking, well this is going to hurt but only for a few short seconds. Idk?? But it did NOT phase him one bit! I had talked to 4 or 5 people that had this system, so reluctantly I decided to give it a try. I thought to myself well if it doesn’t work I will simply return it, no harm no foul. My boyfriend had it installed and collar on Bo in 30 mins flat. We walked ole hard-headed Bo around maybe 4 times to show him the boundaries. Once he heard the beeping, he kept walking then he felt the shock 1 time and that must have been enough because he never ventured close again! It has been about 2 months of use and I would give it 100 STARS IF IT WAS AN OPTION! We live in a subdivision where houses are fairly close. I was ultimately worried that the zone would lead into the neighboring yard. (which was the #1 thing we are trying to prevent) And although it may, Bo doesn’t even attempt to go that far. I believe he now understands to stay in his own yard! Living in a subdivision, many people take walks and Bo just sits and watches them now!! Matter of fact, just to see, we have sent him outside WITHOUT the collar and ironically enough HE STAYS IN OUR YARD!! The ONLY complaint I have is the small clear piece on the collar broke off the first time I went to adjust the strength of the shock. So far it hasn’t effected anything so fingers crossed on that! Just an FYI, we set ours on a level 3 to begin with and my boyfriend was ready to give up, so I told him to have some patience and we just kept adjusting the level on the collar and we ended up discovering for Bo he needed to be set on a #6. Again, I repeat he weighs 180 lbs, and the Mastiff bread is KNOWN for their stubbornness. I would suggest starting at the lowest level for a smaller dog PLEASE! But, if you are hesitant as myself, about this system just give it a try AND I PROMISE YOU WILL BE SO SURPRISED!!!!! I love this system, and just hope that it lasts!!!!!!Owner of French Mastiff

I bought this as a last resort and man how i wish id bought it first. We have 3 dogs. 1 a very pigheaded pitbull ( 18 mo) that likes to test us at every turn. 1 German Shepard (4 mo) who is way to smart for anyone's good as she can open all our doors and gates. And 1 Cane Corso Doberman mix pup so far he's a good pup but he's only 7 weeks old. We have tried everything to keep the other two in ( 8 ft chain link. Hot wire. Adding an inward incline at the top. Burying the fence.) but they always found a way out. We installed this fence 3 days ago in about 2 hours and have already introduced the dogs to it. Our gsd is already steering well clear of it. Our pit on the other hand is being more stubborn about it his color is is set at max and he is still trying to run through tho he bring himself back inside the barrier very fast once he crosses it. So if you have smart stubborn hard to contain dogs. Just get it. You wont regret it.Womack02

I installed this system about 2 weeks ago and, have done some light training. I first tried the wireless system but, it had issues with coverage and dead spots in my yard. I have a miniature Daschund and I have found that she quickly learned the boundaries almost to the point of being gunshy of going out into the yard. Probably my fault. The other system zapped her a few times and, now I'm going to have to back off and work into it more slowly. We had a problem of her running off and paying absolutely no attention what so ever to our calls, scolding or going after her. Very frustrating, and dangerous to her going across the street not to mention also my wife and I get very tired having to go after her!!!!! At this point with only the audio she will NOT cross the boundary wire! Good for us and safer for her! Right now she has a problem with going out in the yard but, in time and as we work with her I'm sure she will regain her confidence. The system was fairly easy to install, took me about a day to do it right. Toughest part I had was going across the 24ft driveway, several years ago I put caulking in the expansion joints and it was pretty tough to clean it out. Had to go about 6" at a time. I did mine above ground and, I did opt for 14ga wire, the 20ga that came with the system was way to flimsy. My choice because I like to do things thoroughly with no problems when I'm done. Used almost 500ft of wire and about 160 yard Staples. Barely visible and I can mow over it with no problem. I think this system will do the job for what it is intended to do and way less expensive than having a fence put up. I didn't want to fence in my whole property at all. Just going to have to work more with the dog and, after awhile I'm sure she will feel at ease with going out in the yard. My wife and I will not have to worry about her running off and being injured when we are outside working or relaxing in our patio or deck. Pet Safe is what it means and what it will provide. My review is on the Basic In-Ground Fence System by Pet Safe. This in ground fence system worked great for our little dog. The directions are well written and easy to follow. They offer several options for installation, in ground, above ground, with a fence, and around your garden and the trees. They are thorough and easy to follow. After installing the unit, I tested it following the instructions, and everything was working. There are 5 levels of electric stimulus. The collars are fully adjustable for the shock level, and the controller adjusts the distance the collar starts to activate. The collar has a separate adjustment for the level of shock; 1-5. The wall controller adjusts the width of the zone, 2' wide to 10' wide. If your collar is one level 1 (low) and the width is at 10 (maximum), your dog will not get a shock, only a low level beep. You have to adjust the collar to 5 (high) to train the dog the first time. One or two zaps and the dog will learn to associate the warning beep with the zap. Then you adjust the shock level down to 2 or 3 for most dogs. I have read that dogs need a visual barrier, they won't remember the wire is buried, once they associate the visual barrier with the electric fence, they know it is there. I would recommend this in ground fence for your dogs to be able to run around the yard.Rose28

This took my husband and I about a couple of evenings to install. You bury the lead wire around the perimeter you don't want your fur baby to cross and the collar is light and works nicely! I have a jack Russel/Chihuahua that likes to snoop and sneak out of the yard and this little device has solved that problem. I only needed to use the tone mode and that worked fabulously. I bought an additional collar for my blue heeler. She is a bit more strong willed and faster, so static mode worked for her. I'm thankful for this! I installed this fence for my dog on a town lot that was around .25 acres. I must say you should definitely read the instructions fully before just starting this installation as you have to do some prep work, and this is not simply a plug and play fence if you want to trench it in. I think if there was an existing fence or something you could probably get away with just hanging the boundary wires directly to it but chances are that is not the case always. In my case I used a spade to kinda make the trench on my laid-out boundary line. I did this after a heavy rain as that made the task by hand much easier than the ground being rock hard like it is when it is dry. I stepped on the ground with my body weight after the installing the wire to kind of tamp the ground back in place and let mother nature do the rest over time to get the ground to settle. I did have to cross my driveway and really just shoved the wire in the expansion joint and shoved it down as far as I could. I just have to be conscience that I do not pierce the wiring when doing my edging. For my lot it took quite a bit of the 500 feet of included wire even though I consider it to be a pretty small lot. My dog has used wireless electric collars before so the training was not so difficult, but I did put out the included flags on the boundary line during training to make sure the boundary training went smoothly. The collar fit my dog nicely. As far as hooking up the boundary lines to the transmitter it was easy. I installed the plug-in wall unit in my garage and actually drilled a hole through a brick wall to get the boundary wire outside. I used caulk to seal off the hole with the wire to protect the weather and critters getting into my garage through the access hole. As I mentioned that since I have used wireless systems with my dog before the training was minimal and the system is working nicely.Country Man

We do not have a fence in our backyard and have to constantly leave our Poodle on a 30 foot leash when she runs around backyard. But I hate that she is even on a leash and can't run and live free. This fence is a perfect solution since we can not afford to install a proper yard fence. We set up the boundaries and it was easy to follow directions. I purchased the cat collar since she is a 8lb poodle this collar is much more soft and less bulky for her to wear daily. At first reading the instructions you might get overwhelmed but it's not as bad as it seems at first with the install. The only thing I wish is there was a way to make it have a wireless signal to the main box so you don't need to run wires into the house. Part of my install is on the fence and some in ground both were fairly straight forward. We have been working with our dog per the instructions. While I feel we could probably teach our dog where to stay out of with just the training guide in the book but the added collar helps reinforce the boundaries. So far she is responding well although she is a border collie and they tend to learn fast but I don't think it would be hard to work with any dog with the right patience and practice. Don't buy this if you expect it to work out of the box you still need to train your dog the system is more of a reminder than it is a set it and forget it.Jono21

The PetSafe In Ground fence worked great in our yard! We aren't allowed to have traditional fences in our subdivision but wanted to be able to keep our goldendoodle safe and in our yard. This system was a bit of a project to install in comparison to hiring a company or something, but the directions well clear and concise and it wasn't difficult to install. We borrowed My dog was very receptive to the training with the boundary flags and picked up on the boundaries very quickly and easily!! Petsafe had some helpful videos on their website which helped guide us how to begin training as well. The system seems really reliable, and I love that I can know that she is safe and gets to run and exercise without having to worry constantly. The in-ground fence was extremely easy to install and had step-by-step directions on how to do so. I had thought it would be difficult to install, as I am not an overly technical person, but was surprised to learn that even the least technical-savvy person could install. I love that my dog no longer needs to wear a leash outside and he's able to roam freely. I feel this provides him with a sense of independence, although he still prefers to be by my side. On my end though, it provides me a sense of relief that even if I look away momentarily, he won't be able to roam outside of the flags. As far as your dog goes, I would recommend walking him or her around the area to ensure they are aware of where is permitted and not permitted to go. Once your dog learns this, they will be on their way to what they feel is freedom.Amber24

We recently got a new Bernese Mountain dog puppy and we have a 7 year old Dachshund mix who we rescued 4 years ago. I received the kit very quickly through the mail. The instructions were pretty simple and I was able to run the cable around the perimeter of my property very quickly for testing it out. Our puppy got corrected about three times before he truly figured it out and learned to stay away from the perimeter. Our Dachshund, who is known for bolting as soon as the door opens, didn't take to it as quickly. "Can't teach an old dog new tricks?" That was not the case. After she ran through the fence a few times, she was scared to go outside at all. Being a rescue from an abused family, this is understandable. After working with her for a week, showing her the boundaries with the shock correction turned off just utilizing the audible correction and the vibration alert, She started to get comfortable outside again and also stayed away from the perimeter. The beep and vibration was enough to get her attention and she returns into the property. At this time, I spent half a day with a spade shovel and buried the fence a couple inches into the ground. I found that the signal was a bit less, so I took advantage of the signal strength dial and turned it up and tested it again. It took a bit of trial and error, but I got it dialed in pretty good. This has been an absolutely fantastic device for the dogs. They can go outside and run around like a dog should be able to do! Now I just have to figure out how to stop my Dachshund from digging up critters around my AC unit, LOL. I think I am going to build a decorative fence around my unit for this. I purchased this system about three years ago. It worked great for my GSD for about two months.. then he learned he could run through it.. and did so on a regular basis. If you have smaller dogs.. would highly recommend this fence system.. for bigger dogs… Not so much. Oh and i recently acquired a Caucaision Ovcharcta… she is now 8 months old and goes through it like it wasn't there. For me it was a waste of money. I have two pit bulls and a bull terrier. I bought this in hopes it will keep the dogs in the yard without a physical fence. At first the dogs were very scared to go outside but after a little training and some play time in the yard they have learned their boundary. Be sure to not adjust the width control while the dogs are wearing the collar they may get an unexpected shock. Be sure to read the instructions and then read them again before trying it on the pets. Show them the boundary on level one which is just a vibration and a beep.Then set it to level two which is the lowest shock. Put in the training as recommended and you can't go wrong! It has worked really well for my rescue Bull Arab x who had severe separation anxiety. I thought it may take much longer to train him but he learned quickly and was comfortable within 3 days. I didn't have to take the stimulation above 3. My dogs do not leave the yard now, but the lab did figure out if she gets over the border line that she is free to run, but she cant get back home (to her food) without getting shocked. I have decided that I will mount the wire to small fence posts to keep the neighbors dogs from coming into the property. Bought this product online and picked up at store. The spool of wire inside the box unwound and a mess. Plus the wire was all intertwined making it impossible to untangle. All other contents were fine though. Probably should have returned it to the store!BK13822

Uncoil and check wire before installing. Quality control problem – after digging and installing most of the wire, the last 20 or 30 feet at the end of the coil had breaks in the protective coating every few inches. As we needed the broken wire to finish the loop, every break had to be repaired with electrical tape adding a couple extra hours to finish the install – frustrating. was required.Dive

This product will shock your animal inside! We have a 6 pound chihuahua who is now utterly confused. The collar picked up on the housing wiring and went off repeatedly before we could figure out what was going on. It went through the test phase totally fine, and so I proceeded to bury 500 feet of wire, only for it not to work. Only took 2-3 sessions and 2 mild static corrections to have my frisky Doberman trained! She loves to bolt into the woods at the first sign of this stray cat and nothing has been able to prevent it until now. I even let her out without the collar and she stays in the designated area. I heard that the battery dies quickly on the collar so when she is not outside, I take the battery out of the collar to lengthen the battery life. It's been 6 months and still on the original battery. If you live in a condo/townhouse, you may have to get creative with the base placement since the radius is a circle.dgoleno

We have 2 transmitters at home and 2 more at a vacation cottage. 2 allows for a larger area for dogs by over lapping fields of coverage. We currently rent our home so putting up fencing is not an option for us. This wireless fence allows us to let our dog enjoy some perceived freedom. The system works very well and keeps our pup confined to our yard. Batteries in the collar have to be changed on a regular basis. If not, you may find yourself chasing down an overjoyed dog who intentionally runs through every puddle in your neighborhood. I have been using these collars for more years than I like to admit. I have trained many dogs to stop barking, used it on my own dogs in the kennels that love to hear their own voices and absolutely wouldn't use any other. Batteries can be purchased at tractor supply and many other places online. The collars wear out before the bark parts themselves. Have been able to purchase replacement collars to use with the units. It's all in the placement of the collar on the dog!Pam

I had high hopes along with guilt in this desperate purchase. I have a shiba inu and a puli that have the most piercing barks and they don't stop. I have yet to try it on the shiba inu because he has been quarantined inside for the past 2 years after too many running off incidents but the puli sends her days in a fenced in yard and I am concerned for the neighbors. I want to be a polite conscientious neighbor. this product worked for a month because she barks that incessantly. the only place to obtain new batteries is online. the replacement plan I just researched only provides 4 batteries a year. her barking has not stopped she just found a new way to bark quitter with a different sound. if she barks her normal bark, like at feeding time she yelps and I feel awful. I have mixed reviews. it is effective but the battery life does not meet our needs. my husband wants to sell my dogs due to their barking so I am still desperate but warry of spending money on something that may not work. ( ie that as seen on tv bark off, don't want to spend 50 bucks for a similar devise for it to be ineffective. ) please advise and make a longer lasting battery.michelle

We purchased this product to contain our black Lab Robodog. He is a very determined dog and we were skeptical that any non-physical barrier would contain him. The Humane Contain electronic fence is clearly the best one on the market. I am an electronics engineer and a pet owner so, I am aware of the top notch engineering done in the pet field by High Tech Pet Products, the manufacturer of this system. But, I still did my homework before deciding which product was best for my home and my two dogs. I looked at features, specifications and price and decided the Humane Contain system, provided that it lived up to its claims, was the best value to be found. Upon receiving the product from Sam’s Club, I must say that I was impressed with the quick shipping and, most of all, the quality of the product. The base station transmitter is fully water sealed for outdoor mounting which was a plus for me because I wanted to mount the unit on the outside wall of my utility shed. It has a rechargeable battery back-up which I have not seen on any other electronic fence. The transmitter has a user display with an array of illuminated indicators that show you status of the battery, the field wire, the power mode and the overall system condition. I found this very useful because it let’s me see the system condition at a glance. I also noticed that it alerts you with an audible tone when the back-up battery charge is low. Of course, I couldn’t help but hook it up to an oscilloscope to check out its radio properties. The transmitter works at 14 kilohertz. This is different from the what competing systems that state an operating frequency of 7 – 10 kilohertz. This means that the Humane Contain was not likely to be affected by my neighbor’s electronic fence. I also noticed that the radio signal is very well generated with a digital code embedded in the signal. Pretty advanced stuff for a dog product. The collar also seems to be unique in that it delivers its shock stimulus in short pulses. This seemed curious to me until I read the manual which states that this works better at teaching the dog to respect the boundary without immediately causing trauma and confusion. In training my dogs this appears to be the case although, I have not tried others brands for a comparison. The collar is fully waterproof – a big, big plus – and it has a built-in test button that sends it through a diagnostic mode verifying that the battery, radio receiver and output stimulus are working. Another major concern is the collar battery life. The unit uses a proprietary battery, something which I did not like at first because you have to get them from Sam’s Club or a Humane Contain dealer. I purchased the extra battery 12 pack to be safe. After using this system for nearly a year now, I am happy to report that the collar batteries are lasting about three months so I am set on batteries for a few years. Hands down, the most impressive feature this fence has to offer is the proportional stimulus. As the dog approaches the boundary the rate of shock pulses increases. One of my dogs stops within the first few pulses. The other one (surprisingly the smaller one) goes much closer to the boundary wire and is willing to take more shocks before finally giving up and retreating back toward the house. I really like how the system is designed to tailor the shock to match the individual temperament of my dog’s. All in all, I was pleased that I made the right selection by purchasing this system from Sam’s Club. My BF and I adopted a 7month old black lab. We live in the country with 45 acres, and know we wanted him to be able to run freely. However, he was getting more confident and running away to far off neighbors yards and not coming back. So, after a lot of research, and reading reviews about this product, we made the purchase, ordered a few extra spools of wire, and haven't looked back yet! We have changed the settings around a few times, especially during training, and are so happy with the product. The beeping & pulsating of the collar before the actual jolt is just perfect for our lab. He gets his warning and is already on the retreat before it gets intense. He hasn't tried to run through it, and when the line has broken, it was a very easy quick fix. the Instructions were 100% helpful, and training was a cinch! Having the double collars is awesome too, we switched out the tough plastic collar with a real-tree camo vinyl collar for the spring/summer and a blaze orange reflective one for the fall/winter. adding the transmitter piece was very easy too! This took my husband and I about a couple of evenings to install. You bury the lead wire around the perimeter you don't want your fur baby to cross and the collar is light and works nicely! I have a jack Russel/Chihuahua that likes to snoop and sneak out of the yard and this little device has solved that problem. I only needed to use the tone mode and that worked fabulously. I bought an additional collar for my blue heeler. She is a bit more strong willed and faster, so static mode worked for her. I'm thankful for this! I installed this fence for my dog on a town lot that was around .25 acres. I must say you should definitely read the instructions fully before just starting this installation as you have to do some prep work, and this is not simply a plug and play fence if you want to trench it in. I think if there was an existing fence or something you could probably get away with just hanging the boundary wires directly to it but chances are that is not the case always. In my case I used a spade to kinda make the trench on my laid-out boundary line. I did this after a heavy rain as that made the task by hand much easier than the ground being rock hard like it is when it is dry. I stepped on the ground with my body weight after the installing the wire to kind of tamp the ground back in place and let mother nature do the rest over time to get the ground to settle. I did have to cross my driveway and really just shoved the wire in the expansion joint and shoved it down as far as I could. I just have to be conscience that I do not pierce the wiring when doing my edging. For my lot it took quite a bit of the 500 feet of included wire even though I consider it to be a pretty small lot. My dog has used wireless electric collars before so the training was not so difficult, but I did put out the included flags on the boundary line during training to make sure the boundary training went smoothly. The collar fit my dog nicely. As far as hooking up the boundary lines to the transmitter it was easy. I installed the plug-in wall unit in my garage and actually drilled a hole through a brick wall to get the boundary wire outside. I used caulk to seal off the hole with the wire to protect the weather and critters getting into my garage through the access hole. As I mentioned that since I have used wireless systems with my dog before the training was minimal and the system is working nicely.Country Man

We do not have a fence in our backyard and have to constantly leave our Poodle on a 30 foot leash when she runs around backyard. But I hate that she is even on a leash and can't run and live free. This fence is a perfect solution since we can not afford to install a proper yard fence. We set up the boundaries and it was easy to follow directions. I purchased the cat collar since she is a 8lb poodle this collar is much more soft and less bulky for her to wear daily. We put on vibration mode and she has been trained easily to remain in the property boundaries. I love the PetSafe Classic in ground fence. I highly recommend.Orlandomama

Our dog has a thing with getting up on our cupboards so we decided to get this to try and see if it would keep him off. I have to say the results are amazing. We put the wire on the edge of our cupboards and ran it along to the plug. The installation was very easy. I have to say it is working flawlessly.The first night we heard a yelp in the middle of the night, assuming he got shocked and some of our food from the cupboard was on the floor but by day 3 he learned his lesson and did not get on the cupboards. It is so awesome to be able to leave our bread on the cubpoards and not have to worry about the dog getting to it (our dog loves bread). We will be leaving it ont the cupboards for about a month just to make sure he doesnt get on it and then we will be putting it outside in the front yard to keep him in the yard. I love that we can use this without having to put in an actual fence. I love how this comes with everything you need and that it is rechargable. Its great quality and works perfctly. This fence works great, but it was finicky to set up. The wires have to be inserted just the right distance, but not too far or the box thought the wire loop was broken. It took us a while to figure that out. In the process the spring popped out of one of the wire clamps so it was useless, but we found the spring and my husband was able to fix it. I really wish there was just a screw we could wrap the wire around and tighten, which would feel much more stable. Everytime we moved the thing, the wires popped out, up till we got it into it's final resting space. We're a little worried the box will get bumped and a wires will come loose again. I will say that when we thought the device wasn't working, the PetSafe team replied to my e-mail within minutes, and on a Sunday. I was super impressed with the fast customer support. We've been using it for almost 2 weeks, counting training time, and our hound foster now stops about 8 feet from the fence he was previously jumping, which is about when he should be hearing the beep. We keep the collar next to the back door and turned off, unless we're putting the dog out. We haven't needed to charge it yet.Erin M

After being in our new home for around two months now and finally had a weekend free my husband and I decided to set up the inground fence. We have one femal dog roughly around 65 lbs that is fairly obedient and really just loves going outside between early morning and late evening. This kit comes nicely packaged with instructions and seems fairly understandable to figure out. You can also look up any trouble shooting online which I highly recommend along with training your dog before hand as that plays an important roll. It comes with everything needed to get started and you can purchase an extra collar or wire on line per animal if needed. I'm really only focusing on my backyard so this is more than enough to get me started as were literally going along the yard with no trees or bushes in the way. It also states that you can place it to an existing fence which I thought was pretty nice. I suggest two people working together as one digs and the other places the wire in the ground behind them. We layed the wire on top of the ground to determine were we wanted it to be and make any last adjustments before we started and we were able to finished in a day and a half with my son helping us towards the end. My husband took care of hooking the wire up and let me place the collar on our dog. We started out slowly and she did really good but started to follow her dad around front while on setting one which is just the tone so we went back and read directions and realized our mistake. We will start at two and up it one at a time during the next few weeks till she gets the concept and doesn't do it again. I can tell you at two when we first tried I don't know what she thought but it did take her by surprise and wasn't something she was use to so I think shes realizing not to go past the flag zone. The good thing is it's enough to startle her but without harming her or make her hate me. I'm still in the training mode and with her being an older dog I'm going a little slower since she gets so scared easily. This is going to be nice letting her out while I'm getting ready in the morning and giving her more room to roam and come back in on her time. One good thing to is thankfully we have a window that we can run the wire through at the corner to connect to the transmitter since it has to be connected indoors. The fence transmitter has a piece that's slides off so you can screw to the wall. Overall we made a few simple mistakes but it was fairly easy to set up and I feel better knowing she can enjoy the outdoors having more space to sniff and not run off! I highly recommend as it doesn't hurt your animal and gives them more freedom to move around!Amberrose1980
