Mometamax product review: Given how common ear infections are in every day veterinary practice, and how difficult it is for some clients to medicate their pets ears twice to three times daily with prescribed topical medications, I was so excited when this wonderful product came out a few years ago with ONCE daily topical dosing. While many veterinarians do expensive evaluations of ear discharges under the microscope or ear cultures sent to outside labs, I would first ask your vet to prescribe one of the broadest acting topical antimicrobials on the market in Mometamax, before subjecting you to expensive superfluous tests, which may not be needed at least initially. . The truth of the matter is that most ear infections in dogs or cats are due to overgrowth of yeast and/or bacteria often together in inflamed ear canals. The vast majority of these infections are often accompanied by redness, swelling, heat and discharge, which are all signs of inflammation or allergies. These latter conditions are why it is so important to have an effective anti inflammatory like mometasone, as part of a topical ear medication in our pets. Because yeast overgrowth are so prevalent as well in such problem ears, the anti fungal clotrimazole is also often needed. And as I mention above, where many dogs have mixed populations of bacterial overgrowth in inflamed ears, including frustrating bacteria like pseudomonas, I find it also important to include the wonderful topical antibiotic gentamycin in such a combination product. It is because of this wonderful trio of main ingredients that make mometamax such an indispensable product to general veterinary practice, as well as make it my first line of prescription topical antimicrobial medicines that I will reach for, before doing extensive and expensive tests on inflamed/infected ears. I find the vast majority of ear infections will respond to a 10-21 day course of this medicine, often making these additional tests un necessary. Clients should also know that most, if not all of the prescription topical antimicrobials currently on the veterinary market are combination products like this, but none have the spectrum of coverage that mometamax has. When used with a wonderful ear cleaning agent first like 1800petmeds ear cleansing solution, pet suffering from these painful ear conditions is often quickly relieved. There are very few disadvantages to using this product. On rare occasions pets can have allergic reactions particularly to the topical gentacin in this product where hearing loss can occur temporarily or even more rare permanently. . However this is EXTREMELY rare in my experience, and one must also keep in mind that there can be very rare reactions with any medication whether prescription conventional drugs or natural ones. It is always critical to make sure your veterinarian has evaluated the ear drum(known as the tympanic membrane) before prescribing this product, as a ruptured ear drum can make pets more prone to topical or less common systemic reactions. Unless there is a ruptured ear drum, or the product is used for months at a time, I dont find systemic reactions to the rest of the body much of a problem in my years of using this product. Of course if the ear problem persists or relapses, a full medical workup for underlying or complicating factors should be done by your veterinarian, including an allergy workup, thyroid testing and/or culture or evaluation of the ear discharge under the microscope, in addition to possibly sedation of your pet and ear flushing and x rays of the skull to evaluate the middle/inner ears to evaluate whether surgical drainage might be helpful. I highly recommend and often prescribe mometamax as a first line drug of choice for many ear infections/inflammations. My overall rating of this product is an enthusiastic 5. Its ease of use is a 5 as well.
This product is one of the best on the market. I have a black lab that has had ear problems since she was a pup. Drug after drug, test after test, steroid after steroid,(over $3,000 worth) finally this product was introduced to me by a Gun Dog Trainer who deals with infected labs ears all the time and I will tell you that after a week of treatment my dogs ears cleared right up. With her allergies and her constant need to find water and swim she gets ear infections 3-6 times a year and after cleaning and use of this product infections are gone. I would personally recommend this product to any one who has ear infection issues with there dog. Do not read the reviews that this product can make your dog deaf these are people who don’t know how to talk to there vet or even read the drug information provide in the box. It has been said that Gentamycin, the antibiotic in Mometamax, can cause temporary deafness. Temporary is the key word here. Some dogs have a genetic susceptibility to ototoxicity from Gentamycin. With the withdrawal of the antibiotic, the situation will reverse. This is caused by inflammation in the cochlea. This is like any other drug on the market there are so adverse side effects to few but not the vast majority so as always make sure you consult with your vet before you use any medication on your pets. Would you take high blood pressure medication with out asking your Dr ? In the end this has been a life save for my dog and myself and with out this product there would be a never ending battle to get rid of my dogs infected ears. Mometamx is a great product and if your dog has infected but with anything ask your vet.

This worked great on my dog's irritated ear. It was a weekend AND a holiday, and my poor little guy was so uncomfortable. I couldn't find an open vet anywhere and the ER was packed. I highly recommend this product. I’ve been using Zymox for years. My terrier mix has Ear Edge Dermatitis. It’s incurable and usually tears up the edges of the ear from constant cell overgrowth (auto immune) and dogs will be plagued with constant ear issues and itching. When I notice him itching, I put a few drops in ear and massage into ear canals, then rub into the edges of ears. Do this for a couple days, itching stops, ears are clean and have a healthy pink look. It’ll be several weeks before he starts itching again. I've always liked Zymox products, but this one really impressed me! GSD/BC mix has had continual ear issues since having a hematoma drained in her right ear. The ear lays over and is full of thicker tissue which seems to hold in a ton of moisture. This last bout of pain and scratching was making her (and me!) absolutely crazy and, after a week of use, the regular Zymox I always have on hand just wasn't cutting it. I bought the product a couple weeks ago because my dog was prescribe this due to an ear infection. Before applying the product I had the vet do and ear flush just so that when I applied the medicine it would be on a clean as possible ear. I clean my cocker's ears every 7 to 10 days with ear wash and use the non-alcohol canine ear wipes a couple of times a week for maintenance but every few months she'll get stinky, yeasty ears. My vet has prescribed several different treatments but none have worked as well as the Surolan drops. On day 3 she stopped scratching and rubbing them and by day 4 the smell was completely gone. My poodle has a lot of ear hair that needs to be cleaned often. In between baths, the smell can get kinda funky. Used this ear rinse to see if it would help and it does. It keeps the waxy smell away longer but it's not mask any existing smells. It's easy enough to use and my dog doesn't seem to mind it too much. The doctor suggested this product for my cat. He is a very sweet cat and super easy going, but this product smells like bubble gum and scared him away. He gets super anxious when we get close to him. This medication has been prescribed to my pet until the end of his life. He has some urinary issues alone with some other problems. The same size bottle at our vet was nearly $50 and with KV Supply it is $17. Needless to say we have been customers of KV Supply for a few months now. At the beginning, his issues were becoming a financial burden as we tried to do all we could. The prices with KV supply really lightened the load. It says it will get rid of bacteria, viruses and is antifungal, which sounds like it ought to cover everything. My kitten has that typical dark brown stuff in her ears. It didn't work better than the standard cat ear cleaners. I used it almost daily for two weeks or so. It loosens the gunk so you can wipe it out but doesn't get rid of it at it's source, which is the whole point. There's new dark brown gunk still being made down in her ears daily. She is an inside only cat and we have no other pets. The vet has now prescribed drops that include a steroid. Hope that finally clears it up.tklp
I rescued a dog. He had bad ear mites, took care of those with mineral oil. Took him to a vet and for the same old make money bit, he had an ear infection. So, he got antibiotics orally. Then he kept showing signs of pain, itching etc..,but the smell let me know from his ears he had a bad yeast infection. Being a nurse I tried several home remedies to no avail. I looked around online for something non prescription and not expensive that would have something to kill yeast. Dr. Gold's has ketoconazale. I've used almost one bottle now, his ears are clean of the brown / black discharge. He's feeling better 100% now and I am thankful for this stuff! Saves me a lot, no return to the vet. I used to spend so much $ taking my dogs to the vets for ear infections, because every time they got a bath they would end up with water in your ears and get an ear infection and of course the vet would make me come in to get an antibiotic! So you pay an office visit and then you pay for the antibiotic and a test to see what the problem is very expensive! I use this every time I bathe my pet and ever since I started using it I've never had to deal with an ear infection again! I have had two Maltese and 1 Bichon poo and any dog that their ears hang down if you don't get them dry enough you will almost certainly get ear infections! I have four dogs, the most recent being a Saint Bernard. While I knew floppy eared dogs had more of a risk of ear infections, I didn't really think a Saint Bernard's ears were that floppy. Well after two ear infections that I went to the veterinarian for meds, I talked to a longtime Saint Bernard owner who said they keep their own personal supply of ear meds on hand. So I started searching…I read nothing but great reviews about this product, so I purchased. Once it arrived, conveniently my Saint Bernard had started to develop that ear funk smell and redness. I began using it as the bottle instructed and low and behold the ears got 100% better within days! I now use this regularly when ear problems start to arise and the wax starts to build up. I don't necessarily need to use it for the 7 to 14 day period now, it's more of just a spot treatment as needed and boy does it work. I generally put some on a cotton ball, put in the ear and massage. Then I'll go through with q-tips and wipe away excess wax while also adding the solution onto the q-tips. Same story as others with constant vet trips and put on meds for ear infection only to go back a month later for the same thing. Then 2 days before a Holiday I could not get in to my vet as they were too busy and booked up. I knew my cocker's ears were hurting. I started the zymox and the next day went to emergency vet. The vet is impressed and since he knows about Zymox, am disappointed he didn't recommend it sooner. The only problem now is he had gone off his food and I have been finger feeding him as well as spritzing water into his mouth. He had lost 2lbs from refusing food, but seems to be bouncing back. Any suggestions for the loss of appetite possibly brought on by the fact he may not be smelling as well and eating may have become difficult from the sinus issue ? I use this product on the vulva of my female golden retriever. She has a skin flap that holds in moisture, so she has a chronic skin condition there if not treated. If your dog gets paw and skin dermatitis you need to get this! My golden retriever gets it from outdoor allergies especially from grass. Found this ear rinse for dogs at Walmart by Pet Armor brand. It's priced very reasonably at under five dollars tax an all so it's affordable for most pet parents. We had no choice but to find a safe ear cleaning solution bc our dogs are pitty's with unclipped ears so they're prone to dirt/wounds. This solution seemed to work very well without causing further irritation. After rinsing, wiping out, and cleaning his ears we've noticed a huge decline in his head shaking/scratching so I'd say it's definitely a great pet parent item to have on hand!megan.p
I have a West Highland White Terrier and he has had ear infections practically from day one. We have some dogs with big floppy ears. They also love to roll in the mud and dirt. So, as you can imagine, that can make for some disgusting ears. My German Shepard had recurrent ear infections for over a year. At first it was once a month, then twice, and it ended up with painful inflammations every week with pus discharges and bad smell. That was terrible, nothing helped, antibiotics prescribed by vet stopped the process for some days, but afterwards everything was back again, and internal antibiotics made my dog weak. Then we found out that this was not a bacterial infection, it was fungi! But we could not find any efficient remedies against it. We used oregano oil and similar herbs internally, but they helped also only for a while. Then I found out information about Zymox and ordered it, that was our last hope. The first time I cleaned my dogs ears with Zymox, it smelled awfully. The next day the smell was not so bad, and after some other days there were no smell at all… We used it as indicated, 14 days, but already after 7 days my dog recovered. It is 10 months from then now, and there is no more any sign of ear problems…. I am SO grateful that someone has developed such an efficient product and there is a possibility to order it from abroad. I can't imagine where we would be now if there were no Zymox….Helen

I have a purebred Pitbull named Tonka. He developed an extremely bad ear infection on his left ear. About a week or two later he started to develop the same infection in his right ear .. just not as bad. We were not sure what had caused it. I am currently out of work right now, so my husband is the only one bringing in the income, and we did not have the money to take him to the vet. We were very worried about it causing permanent damage. He was constantly scratching at it and shaking his head, he even scared the top of his ear from scratching it so much. I saw this product online, and was very impressed by all the wonderful reviews that I had read, decided to try it. I could not be happier with the results! Tonka has been on the medication for almost two weeks now, and there is a major improvement in the way his ears look. The right ear is completely healed, and the left ear is just about cleared up as well. I would highly recommend this product as a great alternative if you do not have the money to see a vet.
My Pug Arthur has suffered with ear infections his whole life. The Vet took care of it for us but that is very costly and the infection came back again and again. I started looking for something else and read the reviews for Zymox Otic Enzymatic Solution Hydrocortisone Free. It sounded like what I was looking for so I bought it. We have been using it for 6 days now and although it works slower than the vets med's it is working. Arthur has all but stopped scratching and the ear is looking alot healthier every day. I wished the applicator tip was a bit longer to get it deep inside the ear. Having to rub it down into a aching ear is painful. I will buy this product again and I recomend it to other pet Moms.
