This is a well made pet door. However, you will find it difficult to get a good seal with your existing slider. I had to buy additional weather stripping to put on each side of the pet door. I bought this for my kitties and took awhile for them to using the flap to exit because of the strong magnet at the bottom of the flap.Diane

But not together at the same time…let me finish. So I have a wonderful rotund cat but I don't let her out, so no go for her. However, If you have a portable A/C and need a way to expunge the hot air though a sliding glass door, here you go. Just put the robot arm through and you're good. The only other thing I added was weather stripping on both sides, so I'd have some padding between the door and frame. Lastly, I just balled up some rags to seal between the square cat flap and round A/C hose. So, as a cat door, yeah it seems solid. easy to adjust and strong enough to not give up. The door, although plastic can swing both ways and lock accordingly.KiBu

Our sliding door is a custom height of 12 FT, not a normal height, so using the extension included with the patio panel still doesn’t reach the top of the sliding door, which of course is not the problem of the manufacturer of this product. We remedied the problem by using and cutting to size a disposable hard foam cooler, fitted with a foam edge window and door sealer in order to eliminate cool and hot air from coming in and out. It’s not perfect, but works for our pet and for our use.Grace

I bought this and installed it myself (after watching the video). Quick and easy install. Took a little coercion to get her to go through the door. She loves it now! Saves me money because now my cold air is not escaping through the open door. And best of all, no more mosquitoes and other bugs coming in my house. 🙂CindyZoey

I am in the middle of having a sliding glass door installation, and even though it isn’t quite done (trim work etc.) I was able to pull down the tension part on the PetSafe door and slip it in the track. The tension alone held it securely. I was able to easily slip it back down and take it out when they needed to work more. Obi, my mini schnauzer, was hesitant, but I am taping the flap up and using treats and he runs in and out the open flap. He is a smarty pants, and will get the flap soon. It does seem a bit stiff for him at his whopping 13 pounds! He thinks he is the cats pajamas to run in and out on his own. Thank you PetSafe, the bronze color even matches the new slider pretty well. We are house-sitting our daughter's dog for a few months and needed a simpler way for the dog to get out of and into the house. This pet door device is adequate. My primary concern was that our home would no longer be lockable, but we were able to secure the door and device adequately. The biggest negative is that, although the dog is small on weights only 25 lbs. (well shy of the weight limit advertised), it is a tight squeeze for him to get through. We are glad we got it. Price was good for the value of the device, but the construction and materials are not of the highest quality. It would be easy for a would-be burglar to break in.UtahByFive

Have had this door for 3 years and it's still going strong. was easy to install, but I have to replace the seal strip every year or so. Big enough door for my husky, but not too high for my miniature collie to get through. I have only encountered one problem, the flap is a bit on the loud side. But I don't know if that's something that can actually be fixed without affecting how well the flap closes.Madison

First off, I bought the medium sized door (11×8), which is claimed to be for medium pets weighing up to 35 pounds. There would be no way a pet weighing that much could fit through the door. This size door is more for small pets (cats, which I have that weigh 10 to 15 pounds). So I made the right choice by going bigger. It's the perfect size for them, and they get through the door comfortably. A small door would have been a tight squeeze. I installed this pet door against the patio door that doesn't slide. That was the only way that made sense, and would also provide some form of security. Installing this against the sliding door would not work, would not seal, and would not lock. Buy yourself some extra weather stripping (the soft stuff). The hard weather stripping provided with this door is useless. Be prepared to improvise and buy extra hardware to actually make this door fit securely and work with the patio doors. My extra expenses were $35. All in all, I'd recommend the door, but be prepared to do a fair amount of work to make it fit securely. But still this is not buglar proof. It will be an easy access point for someone to break into your home. I don't see how this, or any pet door, could be made completely secure.Mensa8

I don’t understand why this is sold as “great option” doesn’t make sense…. If I fit this in the tracks and assuming that it’s a perfect fit, The passageway for humans to walk out is wayyyy too small! You need to dedicate a whole sliding patio entrance only for this item, do not have any hopes that you’ll be able to use it to go in and out or carry something outside, you won’t fit thru it!Amosh83

It was easy to assemble, looks great with the matching white trimming and seals perfect, no cold air coming in. The price was just right compare to others. I purchased this door at least 5 years ago and every year we’re replacing the plastic adapter that attaches to the hinges that hold/support the flaps. We’ve had to order the whole door replacement kit to fix this problem and now once again, we have to order a whole kit for these My pictures show the extra parts collection needed to replace the 4 plastic adapters and the adapters after they break and crack from dogs using the door on a daily basis.Edman

Most important part of the doors is the flap hinge mechanism and it's made of cheap plastic which fails after the warranty period expires. For the cost of these doors, they should be better built.Dan S

I currently own 2 doggy door slider inserts from a competitor brand. I got this PetSafe insert to replace one of my inserts that is worn out, and I am so glad I did! At first glance you can see that the PetSafe is far superior to my competitor door. Upon quick exploration, I could feel that the PetSafe door was much better quality. The PetSafe door itself is more substantial and heavy duty just off the bat. I like that spring-loaded panel at the top of the door is taller (than my competitor brand) so that it can accommodate more sizes of sliders. I have multiple different heights of sliders at my house so that gives me more options of doors for me to place the insert in. This is beneficial to me when I have a party for example because I can give my dogs indoor/outdoor access to a secluded part of my house when young children are over. The second part I really like is the extra security with the locking panel to close the doggy door. Whereas my competitor version only has a plastic lock that could easily be broken into by potential intruders, the PetSafe has a very secure metal pin lock. Third, I appreciate that this insert has a slight tint to it. My competitor version does not. When I open the doggy door in the early morning in my bedroom I "hook" my curtains around my original slider handle for my dogs to access the door and I go back to sleep. The tinting on this insert is at least some attempt to block out the daylight. Finally, I like that they include some weather striping to help combat some unwanted drafts. Although I would recommend to combo the weather stripping provided with foam weather stripping to really complete the seal. I'm giving it three stars because it is working but for the price, I expected a higher-quality item. In some ways this unit is too thin for my patio door track and is floppy, and in other ways – specifically the attachment brackets and the door "latch" – it is too wide. I had to come up with another way to fix the panel in place, then insert foam tape because it kept flapping when the door was used or the wind blew too hard, and then buy separate security bars for the patio door. Not ideal. And I also plan that I will need to remove it if I leave for an extended period of time, as this thing is a serious security vulnerability in the home's perimeter now…not that most adults don't already fit through an extra large pet door opening. I wish this had a full closure panel – aluminum, hinged. Maybe I should have just made something custom since I can't cut a hole in the wall of my rental house for an electronic security dog door.Julie D

Live in Ohio colder climate and door doesn't flap back into place after our dog goes in and out. The magnet doesn't see strong enough to hold after entry or leaving if there are winding conditions. Great idea but if its windy the door flap will just keep blowing open as its to light to shut during windy conditions, so this leave cold air blowing in for hours if you are at work or sleeping causing higher heating bills. Love the idea but just wont hold in a windy cold environment. The door will have tons of condensation causing water to drip on the indoor floor in the winter months.Alboy

As other reviewers have stated, you will need to fully attach/install this to the door frame for any security. I'm currently using it only for summer, so I take it in/out as needed. When it is in, there is no way to lock or secure your door (unless you do a full install). My pup is a trim 67 lbs and it's a tight fit for her but she has quickly learned that squeezing through means freedom in the backyard! Might be difficult for a chunky/larger dog. Despite the shortcomings, it is perfect as a temporary solution. I do not think it would be a good solution for extreme climates even as a permanent install because it is not a tight fit even with included the weather stripping .ElvisNBama

I bought the petdoor that fits into our sliding glass door. It does not close after my dogs come inside. The magnets don't seem strong enough. The reason why I purchased this new one was because our previous one did the same thing… now this one just does it worse. There is about 1+ inch gap of cold air that breezes directly into our house. I had a Large PetSafe Dog Door in my previous home. I loved the panel that came with it that would "slide-in" and allowed the door to be "locked". When I purchased my new home, a new dog door was on the top of my to do list. I went to the store to purchase one. I notice the x-large door was cheaper than the large door (I thought it was on sale or what not) so I opted for the larger door. When it was time to install the door (my brother installed it for me), I came home to notice that the Panel did not slide in and lock like my previous dog door, instead it just "pops" on. From the outside of the door it would take very little effort for someone to "pop" the panel off. And in fact, from inside…my dogs have mastered "popping" it off themselves…making the panel absolutely useless. I've now done some research and noticed there are two types of PetSafe dog doors…aluminum and plastic. Apparently the aluminum door is what I had previously with the "sliding" panel…and now I am the disappointed owner of the plastic door with the "popping" panel. Had I known there was a difference in doors…I would have opted for a Large Aluminum PetSafe dog door; however, now I'm stuck with a useless X-Large Plastic PetSafe dog door. Now because there is an X-Large hole cut out of my door, I would have to go with an X-Large Aluminum PetSafe dog door, but I cannot afford to spend that kind of money, and a Large Aluminum Petsafe dog door will not fit the space. If I were rich, I could just buy a new door and a new dog door, and problem solved; however, I am not rich, and even the thought of having to buy another dog door when I've already purchased one is making me very upset, but the Panel for the Plastic Door is truly useless…and the Panel component is extremely important in my situation. The Plastic Dog Door itself is a good dog door…I only have a problem with its "popping" Panel. If the Panel is an Important feature for you as well…please go with the Aluminum door, NOT the Plastic door. I sure wish I had known about the difference in the first place!Kari

Just order our 3rd doggie door. Our first door was installed when we first moved in almost 17 years ago. We had a two small dogs so the cat size was perfect. As they aged we needed to replace the dog door size to make it a bit easier for the now old dogs to use. Also the house door was changed so we wanted a new dog door for appearences. Now our replacement door flap doesn't fit as air tight and we have lost a bit of the plastic on the out side frame. These things are due to LOTS of use and NJ weather. Hot summers and Freezing winters. Plastic really gets tortured. Ours was installed by the men installing the storm door so that was a plus for us. I called in to get a price on a new door and Pam in customer service was able to answer all my questions and provide me with just what I needed. Thank You Pam. My new door should be here with in the week ready for our Jack Russell pup and silly grandchildren that think its a hoot to come in thru the doggie door. This is a good product-needs to be installed properly like another item in your home that gets this much use. If that is done and you inspect it when cleaning it you should have years of use. My dog adjusted to this door immediately. No imposing flaps to push through, just a panel that raises to let the dog out and in. This product has significantly reduced the stress on our family caused by a terrier that simply loves to go in and out all day. It works perfectly and is a godsend. We have a seven month old puppy with tiny bladder syndrome so she needs to go outside frequently. However, we also have two cats with feline leukemia and they must stay inside. We ordered this door and it arrived quickly. It took a few hours to install it in the porch wall, mostly time consuming because of the type of wall we had. Once it was in, it only took a couple of days to teach the pup to use it. It’s not very loud so that is good. The delay between the time the dog approaches the door and the time it opens is fairly quick. We were a bit worried that the male cat (who wants to be the man about town) would follow the dog out because the delay from the time the dog goes out and the door shuts seems rather long. However, the cat realized pretty quickly that he couldn’t get outside by himself so he lost interest in trying after a couple of days. We are quite pleased with the dog door. The only problem we had is the collar that the sensor is on. It didn’t stay snug around her neck so she managed to take it off and chew up the sensor. We are ordering a new sensor and I am going to sew it directly onto her regular collar and hope that will fix the problem. Other than that, it is working well and we are quite happy with this purchase.dseastrider

I have 7 dogs of varying sizes who use this door constantly. The only fault I find is that the rubber gaskets between the slats in the door wear out . Everything else lasts a very long time. I tweaked it by putting piano hinges between the slats and that has extended its use a lot. If I could buy just that part the door would last practically forever! This item is so flimsy that it cannot in any form be regarded as secure. I had to screw it into place because the twist tabs were not strong enough to hold it at the right height. We still didn't think it was strong enough so I bought a melamine panel to replace it. Thought at least I could sell it for $20. Alas no. First one I bought was faulty out of the box. The locking screws didn’t work. Bunnings replaced it and the second one the flap dropped off on my dogs back after 2 weeks. She’s a small bulldog and she has the medium door. She fits through the hole perfectly but the flap doesn’t seem to be secured properly. I’ll return it again I guess.Andreea

Awful product. Not worth the cost. Should have just purchased the more expensive version. Flap is tight and difficult for my labradors to fit through, no option to close of the flap if needed to lock the dogs out, the required extension is an additional cost and it doesn't sit flush in the door at all. Returned and exchanging for the Hartman should of stuck to the one I've used in the past. Don't bother trying.Chris

After reading all of the reviews, the VERY common problem is the hinge. This is going to be my 3rd or 4th door and second to purchase (the sizable hole is hard to find a replacement for), most EVERYONE has had the exact same broken and weak point of the hinge. Some of these comments are from long enough ago, you would think that the company would look at the common problems and try and fix the issue. I've had this door for a year now, and after a year of modifying, and remodifying, I give. Simply not a great door for strong dogs. Our doberman broke the door out initially, it was put back in place. The 2nd time he broke it out some of the plastic fasteners broke off. My SO ended up modifying the door with an aluminum strip and all new hardware. It's been broken off several times even with the new modifications. The key backs fall off and we didn't end up using them anyways to begin with. The frame is solid, we got the wall kit which is flimsy and had to seal ourselves but nonetheless it's installed. I'd love to order another model that will fit the already permanent opening. As of current, our heat's turned off until we figure out what to do to fix the door. It's not strong enough for large dogs, they bust it right out!Bunnyfromdahood

Purchased the door about a month ago. We have 4 dogs ranging in size from 6.5 lb to 60 lb. All of them use the door even the little guy. The big dog did not need any training at all he instinctively new when it went click he could go! I was concerned about the reviews but it seemed to me that these were all very large dogs by height and the photos of the installs seemed low to me. I would recommend the product. No more getting up two or three times a night. YAAA I installed it myself, granted I am more of a handyman than most, but I am also over the 65 mark +. So I would expect the young bucks to do it even faster. But you do need to have a supply of the D cells. Batteries are not what they used to be and you only get about a month or a little less use. I am concerned about how long the tag battery will last, time will tell. Great Productricky5437

I ordered this Ideal Pet Door from Walmart.com to replace the same model Ideal Pet Door originally installed over 10 years ago. Walmart.com had the best price and ordering from their website is convenient with fast shipping. This Ideal Pet Door is the same model with slightly different modifications which makes it a better door than my first one. Removing the old door was very easy to do. Replacing the new door was just as easy. All I needed was a Phillips head screwdriver and my fur~kid supervising me. BTW, The original installation took an hour and was placed into a glass storm door with a solid lower panel. The Pet Door is sturdy and comes with a panel that slides into slots on the inside to block the pet door opening. It can be used when travelling or when you want to keep your pet in or out. It has a magnetic strip on the bottom part of the frame and one on the bottom of the flap which keeps the flap closed. I have never had an unwelcome guest come through the door. The Ideal Pet Door is a great value, construction is flawless and replacement parts are available. It has lasted through years of two rambunctious very bad black labs and I am replacing it by choice. It can be installed in doors, storm doors, sliding patio door inserts and in brick walls. Ideal is well know for their quality pet products and has been in business for decades. Extremely easy to install.* Looks and functions better than expected in an interior door. The screws were a bit long considering the width of the door. I would suggest using shorter screws because they were hard to screw in completely, and I was using a drill to drive the screws! Overall, the door is an excellent value and I would buy another one if needed. I went with a slightly larger door than typically recommended for cats. One reason is that we are expected one cat to grow large. (We think he's a Norwegian forest cat. Before that we guessed Maine Coon.) Also, there are steps immediately on one side of the door, so I figured extra clearance would help. The smaller door would probably work OK for normal sized, fit cats. (*I traced the part that slides through the door, drilled holes where the screw posts fit through, and just cut along those lines with a jig saw. It fit right through perfectly the first time! I had a moment of minor shock when I wasn't sure if I oriented the door properly since the middle screw posts are not centered. I did, but it would have been a correctable mistake.)shuumai

The door is well made and easy to install. we bought the large bronze. Only problem we have is that we have 3 dogs and one is a pug, other two are big 80lb even though rated for 100lb dogs and I measured them, for out dogs was a little short., I fixed by adding a small block under raising it an inch. but the 4-5' rise really does work for small dog. The XL version may have been better. But only came in white and more expensive. Been a couple weeks now and the bigger dogs are doing great. Pug, we open the slider for him. Overall well made and works well. Just a matter of getting sized right. May not work as well when you have a mix of small and large dogs.RichardJ

Using this in the sliding screen door that goes out to our screened porch. Kitty loves it! The install was a little tricky only because of the fact that it was a door we installed it on and not an easily removable one. I doubt the longevity a little bit, because it seems like I may need to add a little tape to seal it better or something. I’m nervous that with one strong push from the kids or dogs that the entire screen with tear. Overall, though, I think it’s a nice option!!boflay1022

My senior Calicos are sky walkers. They love bird watching on our 2nd floor laundry room roof from there they walk along the privacy fence onto a shed then jump down to bask in the sun in the fenced in garden below. I LOVE their independence! Now with bug weather fast approaching it was time to think of doggie/cat doors. What a bargain these are sturdy they look good and are NOT cheap plastic. I have one upstairs on my window screen and one downstairs on the patio door screen. My girls and a Jack Russell Terrier can come and go as they please.
