Bought size XL as it was cheaper than the L and I have two large dogs. The bed is massive. Both dogs fit with room to spare. the bed comes in pieces (pillows, covers) and requires some assembly. I'm not sure if I was just missing instructions but I had a somewhat difficult time trying to figure out what size pillow went where within the cover. I ended up just shoving them in and zipping it up so it ended up looking a little lump. Overall I think it's okay for the price but I'd probably explore other options before making a decision to buy this bed.Krista

My dog chews her bed constantly, so I bought this bed with heavy canvas fabric. It seems very comfortable and my 40 lbs dog fits perfectly in medium size bed. But, the fabric attracts dog hairs and dust so much and make it looks very dirty right away. I have to wash it every 2 weeks so that it stays and looks clean. These beds are great quality. I have 2 springer spaniels that used to eat there beds. They also like to go out swimming in the ponds and come in soaking wet. Their current beds are 2 years old and when they get dirty I hose them off and they look great. No chew holes, but after 2 years i thought they needed some backups when they come in all sloppy. My dog absolutely loves this bed!! I have it for about a week and he has laid on it and gotten in it everyday. I car camp so I am not worried about the weight although I understand those who do need to be weight conscious. The zipper is a bit small for the sleeping bag. I think you might consider having like an outside bivy sack so those who need something for colder weather could use it as an add-on. Overall I love the bag and pad. I am camping in April which can be cold here and we can also very snow (hopefully not). Ruffwear products are very dependable. Thank you for making this product.
I have a Heeler/Malamute/Pit mix who weighs just under 100 lbs, he would sit on this out in camp but had no interest in sleeping in or on it inside the tent. If you're looking for a travel "place" for your dog I would find another less expensive option, I ended up getting a 1p bivy footprint that he likes just as much. If your dog sleeps hot I would skip this, but if your dog is a cuddler our other dog does really like the material and the fact that it is hair-proof is stelar. I bought this at the end of the season last year and since my dog is nervous about new things, trained with him extensively on using it and getting comfortable with it. For reference, I have a 45 lb black mouth Cur. Can?t remember but I think I got the medium size. He?s got lots of room. He is double coated but it?s a short coat so he does get cold easily. In the past, when we camp I used a packable blanket but he always moved around and ended up on top of it, shivering. So I got this for him and finally got to use it last weekend in the backcountry near Moab. Worth every penny. Not only did he like having a place to lie down, but at night he was warm and stayed in it all night. It got all kinds of sandy and dirty but all that dirt brushed off well and I threw it in the wash and it was good as new! Packs well, and I was able to clip it to the outside of my pack. I love this pad. I've bought numerous brands of pads for my service dogs over the decades looking for the perfect pad and was never happy with what I found until the Highlands Pad. Service dogs are expected to "under" when in public, especially when they're big dogs, so that they're out of the way: under tables, under benches, under chairs, etc. Under is usually a grimy place, especially by the end of the day. My service dog's pad needs to be reasonably comfortable, light in color (so that people, like wait staff can see him and not accidentally step on him) and not retain the debris that was under the table. It also should fold or roll up small compact enough that I can carry in in a small tote with one hand because my other hand is on my dog's harness. It also has to hold up to being washed day in and day out. This pad does all that perfectly. For a pet owner who doesn't necessarily bring their dog out into grimy locations, this comfortable pad blocks moisture (both moisture from the ground if you use it outside or while camping, and moisture from a wet dog or an accident from reaching the floor – within reason). It's easy to toss into a backpack. It's comfortable and warm on cold days. Medium and large are both generously sized. My large GSD curls up to on the medium just fine, although the large fits him better. I use mine virtually every day and although, the pads are rotating through the laundry all the time, they show almost no signs of wear.Lori
I tried out the new Highlands Pad last weekend (with the Highlands Bed). Here is what I liked/didn't like about it and why I only gave it 3 stars. The waterproof base is non-skid and is great if you're using this in your tent. Everyone who tent camps w/ their dog knows how beds and blankets slide around when your dog jumps in/out. My dog is 70lbs so this is always an issue. I actual wish my sleeping pad had this, though I know that would add weight. I don't know however, if the added cost of the waterproof-ness of the base is needed though. Could make it moisture-wicking or just some other kind of moisture barrier w/ the non-skid surface. The fold-ability/compact-ability is so-so… this is specifically coming from more of a back country camper, so I need it to fit easily in my pack and the shape of it when it's folded is pretty awkward. It fits well into the Highlands Bed, but I opted not to do that because the bottom of the bed is just the normal denier fabric, which means it'll slide around if I actually tuck this into the bed. I think one of the improvements they could make w/ the compatibility w/ the Highlands Bed is to put either Velcro or snap hooks on the bed to connect the two. Then the non-skid function, when used w/ the bed, would still be in tact. One of the main reasons I put this as 3 stars is this pad is that the description implies it can be used as a pad for 'around the camp site', but beware that this pad is VERY prone to burn through and marks from the slight fire spark. So this is not campfire friendly at all, which almost defeats the purpose of bringing it with me camping since that is mostly when my dog is lying around with me.Patti P.

This is not meant to be a fluffy bed, but rather a mat to offer some protection from the ground. It packs down very small and light and the fabric is quite soft on top. This is something meant for daytime use around the campsite or taking breaks on hikes. It is not meant for long-term sleeping. Keep that in mind and this will be a perfect addition for your dog. We love these pads, have had two of them for years now and they're still going strong. I have them doubled up on the back of my suv which prevents dog hair and sand from getting to my seats. We use them in between us in our tent while we're camping. When we throw them down around a campfire or wherever, the dogs immediately know that's their spot and lie down, especially when they're tired. The bottom material is super durable and the top, while fairly soft, is also rugged and can easily be shook out or even hosed off. There isn't much paddling in the middle, so it won't provide a ton of R value on cold nights. The lack of thick foam does mean they roll up quite small and dry out fast. Otherwise if you happen to leave it out and it got wet, thick foam would take forever to dry. A very utilitarian pad, I highly recommend!Jason

I was thrilled to find a foldable, washable travel bed that was actually large enough for my 75lb dog! And it’s not paper thin either! Only 3stars because this isn't made as well as the others I purchased a few years back. The bottom is totally different, slides all over the floor. The duck feathered top isn't as ducky. Must have been short on ducks. All in all it's a good bed. Way up in price though. Happy I've still got the ones previously purchased. I'm using the covers on this one.

The quality of this product, hands down, is some of the best out there. The bed has excellent loft for a heavy duty travel bed, wipes clean, and quickly rolls up into a manageable size. The rubberized bottom holds the mat securely in place. The size is perfect for our cattle dog and our border collie, but I can certainly see folks wanting to buy a larger size mat for larger dogs. We always bring travel mats if the girls visit friends' homes with us. That said, there are a couple improvements I would like to see: 1. It would be nice if there was such a thing as a mostly waterproof brushed surface. This particular bed is too slippery for use in the car and every time my husband drives around a corner, the dogs have to dig their claws in (we put travel beds on top of the Kurgo hammocks so each girl knows her space..). 2. The buckles / loops for the Velcro, while effective, create a bump under the cushion. A reinforced Cordura sort of loop might work better.Boomer
This bed is extremely well made, GREAT cool red color. It is easy to fold into a small roll and has a great carrying handle. I love the slip-proof material on the underside. At first our dog was hesitant about laying on the fabric- he only knows fleece or shearling- but then he got used to it and now loves to lay on it by the front door and watch the neighborhood. Our weather has not permitted outdoor use yet. My only complaint is that it only come in a size medium, which is way too small for our 64 lb Lab puppy. It would not be functional for us. Hopefully they will come out with larger sizes.Shelley
I purchased the medium loft wander bed several years ago, and this bed has never let me down. I use it mainly for overnight trips and dog training, giving my pups designated rest zone in busy areas. The picture angles are a little funny, making it look a bit too small for my pups. However, my 75 pound lab can fit his body and elbows making it a perfect size travel bed. I did have to make one tiny repair to the seam between the liner and the main top, but with how much I use/wash it any other bed would be toast by now. This bed is worth the money!Frierborn49

I have several memory foam beds that are three times as expensive and I purchased this as a backup. My 10 year old Golden who is not a fan of beds immediately snuggled in it and seeks it out to relax. The mattress has less support and is softer and lighter but it is her clear favorite.
