Petsafe Stubborn Dog Receiver Collar For Sale (2024 Update)

We installed the in ground wire around the perimeter of our property. I have one dog that digs under our fence and one that climbs the fence. These collars keep our dogs away from the fence and keeps them from running out into the street. We have had our fence for 5 years now and only replaced the collars once because I misplaced them. Batteries need replacement every few months. I like that the dogs get a beeping warning once they are within a few feet of the perimeter and only get shocked if they cross the boundary.fldolphinmc

I have a lab / hound mix that is 11 years old and she weighs about 85lbs. We began usin this collar since April 2017 and within 3 months, one of the prongs broke off. We contacted petsafe and were told that this is an uncommon problem and that the only way this could happen is due to "rough play, hitting it against an object, over-tightening the probes, etc." I have a hard time believing our senior aged dog plays rough enough to break the prongs of a durably made product. If you have a larger / sporting breed dog, i would steer clear of this product and go with Invisible Fence or the SportDOG brand from another retailer. They seem to cater to larger / sporting breeds. We've had our fence under a year, no problems with the actual fence. We have 2 dogs on the fence, 1 is an English Mastiff and the other is a Cocker Spaniel. The Cocker Spaniel's clip/closure cracked and broke off so we had to go out and search almost an acre of property to find it. We did find it but it is a PAIN to have to go out and search for a collar that you would not expect to break. Recently our English Mastiff has been strolling off the property, she has never done that in the almost year we have had it. First think I did was check the battery and decided to be safe we would change it!! That didn't work so I decided to take off the collar and check it to make sure it worked and it does but there are certain times when it don't. I have it on the highest frequency and I'm hoping this works, I will keep you informed. But us like others are missing the clear caps that cover the button to change the frequency. I don't understand how these pieces can come off unless we take them off, this tells me that there is a malfunction in your manufacturing if we are not the only ones missing these caps!! Then to top it off, you sell these clear caps and expect us to pay for them, something doesn't seem right. If you know these clear caps come off, shouldn't you be trying to fix this issue and offer those caps or free? ​Rich T

We've used these for years. Plan on replacing once a year. The seals often fail and they get wet inside from rain. Make sure you take them off at night or your dogs neck will get hot spots. The standard 9v battery is easily replaceable and economical, but it makes the box very large. If you have chewers, they will tear the boxes off of each others collars.rbeachylife

No doubt this collar works well, but it has not slowed down my 7 month old puppy…she gets a running start, flys over the underground line, yelps once and then happily wanders where she wants. It is a good thing I live far off the road.robbinsk-6

I have had this system for several years and I love it. I have 3 yorkies and they are wonders this keeps them in our yard. GREAT GREAT GREAT!! I have never had any problems with the collars or the system. Both work great. There have been times when one of my grandchildren changed the setting on the receiver or the batteries died quick easy fix. I have never had to recalibrate the collars. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS UNLESS YOU PLAN TO ALSO PURCHASE A BATTERY BACKUP FOR THE TRANSMITTER!!! We have had our transmitter with two collars for 4 years with no issues. We recently purchased this collar for our puppy to add on. Learned the hard way that this collar will shock your dog in the event of a power outage. The second we lost power, our dog went nuts inside our house and thank goodness I was near him to rip the collar off of him quickly. No telling what could have happened if I wasn't home. We never had this issue when losing power with our 2 previous collars, just this one. My old instruction manual specifically said that in event of power outage, dog will not be shocked. The newest user manual on PetSafe site now says that dog will be shocked upon power outage so they suggested a battery backup. I think this is a serious design flaw that needs to be addressed. What happens if I purchase the battery backup and there is a few seconds of a delay? My dog gets shocked anyway. I think the company needs to seriously reconsider this. An animal should not be shocked due to loss of power! I contacted the company about this and they don't seem to be budging off of the insistence of a battery backup. I just don't trust that.jlark23

After my 7 month old lab disregarded the correction from the standard collar, I purchased the stubborn dog collar. After re training him on the boundary for a month it worked for about a week. Now he bolts through the boundary whenever he feels like it. It's like he's learned that the correction isn't permanent and he can deal with it til it quits. We had the system in place for a year or so. We have a stubborn doberman who goes nuts in storms and wants to be by our side rather than stay outside during the day. We set this up to deter the animal from scratching the door etc. At first it worked fine but the dog needed to keep the device collar on all the time or she would know it is not on, test the boundary and start scratching again. Too smart. Then then collar seemed to stop working consistently, replaced the batteries, all seemed fine. then we noticed we needed to replace the batteries far more frequently. then nothing worked. during this time period, the dogs play and run and the collars get trashed. The flimsy plastic collar feed through broke on all the collars, so resorted to duct tape. Eventually it was a mess because the collars stopped working all together. The contacts failed, etc. A more durable collar and more reliable electronics would be a welcome addition to this product…or a less stubborn dog. We have two curious cats who are quite intrigued with the idea of using the doggie door because they see their Great Pyrenees friend go in and out. Outdoors is not a safe place to be, unsupervised. These collars and the sensor disk are lifesavers. Literally.jomama50

We recently got a new Bernese Mountain dog puppy and we have a 7 year old Dachshund mix who we rescued 4 years ago. I received the kit very quickly through the mail. The instructions were pretty simple and I was able to run the cable around the perimeter of my property very quickly for testing it out. Our puppy got corrected about three times before he truly figured it out and learned to stay away from the perimeter. Our Dachshund, who is known for bolting as soon as the door opens, didn't take to it as quickly. "Can't teach an old dog new tricks?" That was not the case. After she ran through the fence a few times, she was scared to go outside at all. Being a rescue from an abused family, this is understandable. After working with her for a week, showing her the boundaries with the shock correction turned off just utilizing the audible correction and the vibration alert, She started to get comfortable outside again and also stayed away from the perimeter. The beep and vibration was enough to get her attention and she returns into the property. At this time, I spent half a day with a spade shovel and buried the fence a couple inches into the ground. I found that the signal was a bit less, so I took advantage of the signal strength dial and turned it up and tested it again. It took a bit of trial and error, but I got it dialed in pretty good. This has been an absolutely fantastic device for the dogs. They can go outside and run around like a dog should be able to do! Now I just have to figure out how to stop my Dachshund from digging up critters around my AC unit, LOL. I think I am going to build a decorative fence around my unit for this. I purchased this system about three years ago. It worked great for my GSD for about two months.. then he learned he could run through it.. and did so on a regular basis. If you have smaller dogs.. would highly recommend this fence system.. for bigger dogs… Not so much. Oh and i recently acquired a Caucaision Ovcharcta… she is now 8 months old and goes through it like it wasn't there. For me it was a waste of money. I also upgraded the burial wire to the max available… still runs through it. Out of options.Voodoo

I have two pit bulls and a bull terrier. I bought this in hopes it will keep the dogs in the yard without a physical fence. At first the dogs were very scared to go outside but after a little training and some play time in the yard they have learned their boundary. Be sure to not adjust the width control while the dogs are wearing the collar they may get an unexpected shock. Be sure to read the instructions and then read them again before trying it on the pets. Show them the boundary on level one which is just a vibration and a beep.Then set it to level two which is the lowest shock. Follow the instructions and be patient it took about 2 weeks for our dogs to get adjustedDonnyd123

One day is all it took for my escape artist to stay in the yard. We now know that our fur-babies are safe in thier own area, Sure beats running home several times a day to round them up. Very easy to install, took us about 4 hours from start to finish. We did not bury the wire (one is a digger) but put it into PVC around the yard. It protects the wire from lawnmowers, weed eaters and digging. The wite PVC also serves as a reminder to the dogs that it is the line in the sand to not cross. It was easy to put the wire around a herb garden to keep themy from jumping on it, My big guy will bolt to the corner of the yard but hits the brakes hard within five feet of the line. I set up the white flags around the yard so they will know where to stop. The directions were easy to understand and online had pictures to give us ideas and how tho set off areas. I would recommend the stubborn big dog to anyone who needs to contain their babies.jamieladie

I have a pup that is a large breed, he looks like I been feeding him steak and potatoes cause he's so dang big. He is ALL puppy though. Chews on everything loves running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Been trying to train him to chill with me, yeah, right. He wants to play. And because he wants to play, he wants to run every stinkin where. Decided, for my sanity as well as his safety, I'd get this thing. Put the flags out, set it on a low static charge, and it didn't take long before he figured it out. You DO have to WORK a dog with this. It's not just a plug it up and watch their hair shoot up when they get popped. Walked him around the perimeter for 7 days, he sees and sniffs the flags. After that, I let him run around, and he got popped maybe 3 times, and figured it out. Now he's pretty dang happy, and I can let him rip around with zoomies while I work in the yard. I have a 2 yr old LARGE French Mastiff that weighs 180ish! I bought with the (red in color) “stubborn” collar. We previously installed a wired underground fence. (Which I have to mention took 2 FULL DAYS TO INSTALL AND READY TO USE!!) My Bo would realize he was close to the boundary, take a step or two back then take a run right through it, with no second thought!!! We watched him do this several times. I guess he was thinking, well this is going to hurt but only for a few short seconds. Idk?? But it did NOT phase him one bit! I had talked to 4 or 5 people that had this system, so reluctantly I decided to give it a try. I thought to myself well if it doesn’t work I will simply return it, no harm no foul. My boyfriend had it installed and collar on Bo in 30 mins flat. We walked ole hard-headed Bo around maybe 4 times to show him the boundaries. Once he heard the beeping, he kept walking then he felt the shock 1 time and that must have been enough because he never ventured close again! It has been about 2 months of use and I would give it 100 STARS IF IT WAS AN OPTION! We live in a subdivision where houses are fairly close. I was ultimately worried that the zone would lead into the neighboring yard. (which was the #1 thing we are trying to prevent) And although it may, Bo doesn’t even attempt to go that far. I believe he now understands to stay in his own yard! Living in a subdivision, many people take walks and Bo just sits and watches them now!! Matter of fact, just to see, we have sent him outside WITHOUT the collar and ironically enough HE STAYS IN OUR YARD!! The ONLY complaint I have is the small clear piece on the collar broke off the first time I went to adjust the strength of the shock. So far it hasn’t effected anything so fingers crossed on that! Just an FYI, we set ours on a level 3 to begin with and my boyfriend was ready to give up, so I told him to have some patience and we just kept adjusting the level on the collar and we ended up discovering for Bo he needed to be set on a #6. Again, I repeat he weighs 180 lbs, and the Mastiff bread is KNOWN for their stubbornness. I would suggest starting at the lowest level for a smaller dog PLEASE! The in ground wireless system has been great for containing our dog within our property. However….. our first collar strap that came with the system only lasted us 2 months before the plastic clasp broke. I considered calling the company, but just went ahead and paid for the replacement strap myself, to avoid the headache. I'm hoping this second strap lasts us longer than just 2 months. I have bought many of these over the years, always decent. The latest one keeps slipping and won't stay at the size I set. There must be some QC issue as the others always worked. It just comes loose as she runs and plays, even though I've heated the end to keep from fraying and use the clip to hold the excess collar. It has slipped enough that I'm worried my dog will lose it, so I will have to rig something like a wire-tie or clip of some kind to keep it from getting loose. Disappointing, as all the others I've bought from you were fine and you are the only ones that sell the 1 inch wide collars. The 0.75" are too thin and eventually twist, rendering them ineffective.Tweety

Ok, maybe my dogs do if they sneak out of range setting 6 on the collar will make your dog come off the ground like a bass breaking water setting 4 is definitely enough. I have never had a problem. I have been using PetSafe for at least 15 years. I wired a half acre lot and I just open the door and out my 2 dogs go and I know they are safe. We live in the middle of Dallas. I really like how it has worked over the years except….. Using the 16 ga. wire supplied, I used to get failure in the system. The receiver box would be beeping and not working. I would have to rewire sections of the wire for it to again work properly. This happened 5 or 6 times until I rewired the whole yard perimeter with 14 ga. wire. The system has never gone down since I did this 6 or 7 years ago. I give this a 5 star rating using 14 ga. wire.Lake

This collar works well with our older Instant Fence unit. We purchased it for our small (9lb) 9 month old pup. It fits her well, and is not to big for her. There is plenty of adjustment in the collar for different sized dogs. The battery life is excellent and she has responded well to wearing it in our yard. I only wish that it had an additional mode for a vibration alert as well as sound. It would also be nice to have a louder sound for us people. When training a small dog I had to bend over to try and hear the alert as we approached the boundary. But in the end, as long as the dog hears the sound, that's all that matters. Great way to keep your pet safe in your yard. When I called pet safe for information, the customer service rep. was very helpful in choosing the right collar for our needs. That helped a lot.3 pines

Works great for my stubborn Husky, I bought a $180 remote shock collar for stubborn dogs because he is just absolutely stubborn but bought this because we were going out of town and having someone else watching them and when he found the boundary again with the new collar he realized what it was and now stays in the yard. Garmin is known for great value and they don't fall short with the PT10 add-on collar for the PRO70, PRO550 or the SportPRO I have the Pro550 and I use all three functions, the tone, the vibrate and the stimulus while training and my dogs respond to each one in the manner I want. I love this collar. We had the normal one and our big dog broke through it every time. This made it where we had to keep him in a kennel. A friend told me about the stubborn collar and I really didn't think it would work, but it does!!! I am so glad our man can stay outside in a bigger area now. I have this product to keep my cats from goung out the doggy door and to keep my dogs from jumping on you as soon come thru the front door. It works wonderfully for the dogs. The collars were much to large for the cats, but with a lot of adjustment it did manage to keep 2 out of the 3 cats in. So overall, it works really well.kexuwgj55

She will not leave the yard and has all the room to run she needs. And she is a runner. When the transmitter cord went out (after probly 5 or 6 yrs) they sent me free replacement in like 2 days. We have a Goldendoodle dog and we bought this system when we adopted almost two years ago. We purchased this system because it was recommended to us and I wish I would have done more research. Our Goldendoodle dog's collar cracked in half about a month ago. My husband and I are extremely furstated becase there are no other collars that are compatible with this system. A replacement collar will be around $150, which is also more expensive than competitors replacement collars. What really infuriates me is reading other costumers reviews and realizing, I will need to buy several other replacements throughout the course of my dog's life because he is still farely young. My husband and I are serisouly considering getting rid of our entire PetSafe system and install a new system because factoring in the projected cost of replacement collars that we will mostly likely go through is A LOT MORE than the cost of an entire new system and to have the new system professional instally. I understand there is a one year warranty, but from the reviews I am reading, along with my own experience, the collars conveniently break/crack after the year is up. I am very disappointed and upset because until we are able to get our dog a new collar, or new system he is the one who suffers. We LOVE our dog, we live on a large piece of land, which he loves to roam. Unfortnately, we can not let him roam because without his collar he roams out of our property. My husband and I are scared he will roam out onto the main roadway that is close to our property. I don't mind spending money on something that is a good product and will help keep my dog safe, but I am furious and upset when a product is not durable and does not hold it's value and for the fact this seems to be a continous issue.boymom2

The system was easy to train the new dogs on but the pups are destroying these collars! I have had to order numerous replacement receivers and repeated collars – and they are only 10 mo. old! I've had this fence for around 2 1/2 years. Works awesome. But the collars are awful. The strap goes around the electronics, so anything that pulls on the collar breaks off the plastic tabs and then done, another $150, just as others here have stated. I don't care about a 1-year warranty. For this kind of money, it should be 5 years! Also feel that after ALL these reviews and still no design change, I wonder what the real PetSafe motive is here, to get us to keep buying collars? Since I upgraded to the thickest wire possible, now looking at other systems that can use the same wire but have better collars, as I've already spent more on collars than I did on the whole original fence. Since I can't recommend the fence and collars separately, AND since these $150 collars happen to be the ONLY ones compatible, I can't recommend the product.da28fan
