The Herm Springer prong collar has made our new German Shepherd puppy behave much much better. It even had an effect on her the first time I put it on her. After a few gentle tugs, she got the message and now walks with me in stride. When she has just her regular collar on, she wants to pull, strain and do just what she wants to do, but this prong collar has put us back in control. It's like having power steering on this pup. I’m very happy with this purchase. It is exactly what I expected. I’m lucky that my boy is well behaved or I’d never be able to put this collar on. It is quite difficult to latch for me. I can’t imagine trying to put this collar on a wriggling dog. I hope that I will only need to use this collar a couple of times. I purchased it on the advice of my trainer. My dog outweighs me by a bit and after a Boxer attacked his sister and he yanked me off my feet trying to defend her it was decided he needed a Come to Jesus Meeting aid. I definitely DO NOT recommend this collar unless you know what you are doing and the collar is fitted correctly. These collars unfortunately get a bad rap. The are not barbaric collars that inflict pain. Not if used for their intended purpose and when used correctly. They are "corrective" collars. I have used them for years. I purchased three on this site because Sprenger is the only brand I like. There is no reason to use an x-large size on a large dog. It is overkill. I use medium on 25 lb dogs up to 125 pound dogs. The large is almost the same as the medium but anything larger is too big, bulky, heavy and unnecessary. These are very well made and the three collars I purchased came well packaged and arrived very quickly. Stick with Sprenger. They are the bestTrainer

This was exactly as described. I really like the quick release. Makes it much easier to put on and take off my dog. We were unable to walk our dog before this collar. He would pull to the point of choking himself out. We tried several collars and harnesses before going with the Prong collar. It took a couple of days to get him used to wearing the collar. I didn't think this would work on the 1st day. He pulled hard and it pinched him. He got scared and refused to move. We were patient worked with him slowly, 5 minutes at a time. He now walks like a champ. Loose leash stays close to me and no longer pulls at all. He is much happier with the walks as are we.LEONARD

I purchased this collar after ordering the same collar on Amazon only to be disappointed with a generic prong collar made in China (I've seen more than one supposed "Herm Sprenger" product have this problem on Amazon – that is, advertising the real thing and then shipping out something generic.) I am very happy that I ordered through 1800petsupplies, as I received an authentic Herm Sprenger prong collar. I started using this type of collar on my first German Shepherd and needed a second collar after getting him a brother. Walks with the two of them on prong collars are enjoyable because even though they both have "loose leash" training – they still need a little correction to be truly loose leash walkers. I used to be 100% against prong collars. I thought they looked like torture devices. I started working at a pet store and would NEVER recommend them until one day another employee who had been there over ten years EDUCATED me on their proper use. Just like anything, using them properly will render awesome results. I have a Great Dane and she was awful to take on walks so I bought a prong collar(over two years ago) one day to try it out and the results…INSTANTANEOUS. She was a completely different animal. I also have a border collie now and we bought one of these herm sprengers as a recommendation for his training. Works great when you use it right. You ONLY use it for short periods of time like walks. Once you're done leash walking it needs to come off. You NEVER leave it on them as their regular every day collar. If you are looking for a top notch prong (after consulting a dog trainer on proper use) this is the one for you. I started training my dog with the typical pet store silver prong. While it helped us both learn the correct technique, I wanted a black one. The silver looked so "uninviting" on a black dog.Herm Sprenger is obviously one of the top companies for prongs and training tools. It is easy to squeeze the prongs to get on and off (but not easy enough to come apart for my simple obedience use). I use a back up slip lead (black) with a small clip, as most trainers will suggest.The stainless steel is light but obviously a strong metal.My black dog is no longer "ostracized" by those who know nothing about correct prong use. Too short. Fits my dog but not for long. He's a 7 month old lab and it came maxed out and I only had @1/2"-1" of adjustment for him. Problem is that it's supposed to go to 18" and I don't think it does. He is currently at 16". Need a collar that spans that change better. 12"-18", then it's 18"-24". Please consider making one that's 16"-22" especially if it's going to bear his name . I also thought it would be wider. But, as far as construction, it's a nice collar and the name was spelled correctly and he seems to like it. Time will tell.Tbeaux

I had to purchase this twice because of sizing. I couldn't find a reference or a length, so I had to guess that my 100 lb Doberman would take an XL. Wrong! It was HUGE. So, I purchased a L and it fits. Great quality and the embroidery is great. I have two 100lbs GSD sisters. They are strong and powerful, beautiful girls. I've tried other harnesses or collars and they still could overpower me. I've been hurt in the past due to walks going wrong. I watched at a farmers market how many owners used prong collar. You could tell it was a gentle control for larger dogs. I went to a pet store and was extremely disappointed at the fastener. This solves that problem and should be the only prong collar ever sold.
