The double braid collar is flexible, not stiff like many other collars. The buckle is quite sturdy and good looking. The collar buckles easily without grommets, and is secure. The inside edges of the collar where it is "melted" together are constructed well without any sharp edges as I have found on other brands. The black, white, grey pattern looks great on our white Great Pyrenees. The prong from the buckle goes into the braid at any point for fine adjustments for rapidly growing puppies is possible. I also like them because they're priced right, enabling me to buy several so when one gets dirty I can just pop a new one on while I wash the other one and I can switch colors when I feel like it. I happened to stumble across Mendota Pet in looking for a slip lead for my new addition, and ordered one. I ordered the 12" collar as she's still very much a puppy, and I have to say I was surprised in how well it appears to be made. The satin nickel is a good contrast to the purple colour and it looks very nice on my English Springer Spaniel. The quality for the price is absolutely phenomenal . A few other reviews mentioned that it was hard to buckle due to the tightness of the weave of the material, and this is absolutely the case, however, it reminds me of closing the door on a well built car, it requires some effort but that's a mark of being well built. I would absolutely buy this again, and plan on it once she out grows this or I want a change of colour. Well worth the money.John R.

We ordered 1 Leather Rolled Collar and 1 Leather Standard Collar. Upon receiving the items, they were both immediately returned. Both collars were incredibly stiff and defective in their own way. The Leather Rolled Collar was defective in that it had a pointed interior piece of leather that directly poked our one dog's neck. The Leather Standard Collar was also defective in design, where the buckle ring is placed on the wrong side of the buckle making it painful to proper secure. I have always used leather leashes with my dogs. I find that once they break in they are great compared to nylon. When I was told by the Therapy Dog evaluator that I needed a 4ft leash I started hunting all over on line for one. This one meets the requirements for length and was comparably priced with other leather leashes that were 6ft long. I had a hard time finding any other 4ft leashes other than this exact one at other sites. This site had the best price. I would have loved to get it cheaper but leather is always more expensive than nylon. I have a strong dog and nylon hurts my hands if she were to pull fast. The evaluator even commented on what a nice leash it is. I hope that with use it will soften up like my previous leather leashes. We are only using it for Therapy work. As for quality it looks to be well put together. The clasp is your typical dog leash clasp but everything is in working order and lines up fine. Love this leash…it is my third one. First one the kids left with our lab and it was chewed in half which is now a repaired 4 foot version. The second one, the wife put on the back of her vehicle and drove off never to be seen again and it had just been perfectly broken in. I know someone is out there happy with their new found Mendota leash. At a show, my dog won a non-Mendota slip leash, and it was not the quality that I was used to in my MSL. So I recently replaced that with a 3/8", 4' Purple MSL for my smaller female. I like it so much that I am going to order another one in the 6' length. The purple color is a gorgeous royal purple. Most importantly, the MSL feels good in my hand, is very effective when walking the dogs, and does not catch on or break the long coat on their necks. I've experimented with virtually every type of leash and collar out there. This is by far the best one for both training and daily walks. Perfect for walking shelter dogs, because it's a one size fits all. HOW TO USE: Adjust it at the very top of the neck. This is good because it's above the dog's trachea so they can breath, and it's the least strong part of the neck so you have most control over your dog. Keep your dog at your side just like Cesar suggests. If you need to do a leash correction, do a quick light yank upwards, not back. If you need extra control (e.g. if you're walking a dog-aggressive dog past other dogs), you can adjust the leash into a head halter by making another loop and putting it around the dog's snout; this way they don't hurt their necks during extra strong leash pulling. I probably own >10 Mendota Product slip leads (I have an addiction, don't judge). Their quality and design is far better than any other slip lead I've used.Hans M.

I raise, train, and show Old English Sheepdogs in conformation and performance sports. In the late 1980s, I bought my first Mendota Slip Leash (MSL) and am still using it today (1/2", 6' Raspberry Confetti). I use it every day, and it hardly shows much wear after decades of use. At a show, my dog won a non-Mendota slip leash, and it was not the quality that I was used to in my MSL. So I recently replaced that with a 3/8", 4' Purple MSL for my smaller female. I like it so much that I am going to order another one in the 6' length. The purple color is a gorgeous royal purple. Love this leash…it is my third one. First one the kids left with our lab and it was chewed in half which is now a repaired 4 foot version. The second one, the wife put on the back of her vehicle and drove off never to be seen again and it had just been perfectly broken in. I know someone is out there happy with their new found Mendota leash. My wife thinks I am crazy about being so particular about a leash and I admit its a bit OCD but I really love the weight and width of the leather especially once it is broken in and the brass ring is great when you want a shorter version. Bought this leash five years ago, soon after adopting my dog. It's always felt great in my hand and is only improving with age. It gets softer, but stays strong. I'm pretty sure it will last as long as my dog will. I would buy another in a heartbeat, except that I don't need to yet. I have a friend with a new puppy and plan to gift him one. The leash and hardware are substantial. I would not recommend for a dog less than about 30 pounds, the clip would probably be too heavy. For anyone with a larger dog this is definitely a plus.Katie

I train dogs daily using the Mendota Pet slip leads. I love the variety of sizes, lengths and colors available. The price is great and the leashed last longer than most other training leads I've used. Only reason I can't give 5 stars is because the leather leash lock is not always consistently tight so sometimes the leash works amazing and stays in place perfect, and other times I get a leash falling down because the lock is too loose. These leashes are so comfortable to hold, the hardware is high quality and the appropriate size – too many Amazon leashes use the same size clasp for small dog leashes which make them clunky. The martingales are super easy to use and seem comfortable for my dogs. I’ll be excited to get them some new collars and a couple 6 foot leashes to add to our collection.
