After reading all of the reviews, the VERY common problem is the hinge. This is going to be my 3rd or 4th door and second to purchase (the sizable hole is hard to find a replacement for), most EVERYONE has had the exact same broken and weak point of the hinge. Some of these comments are from long enough ago, you would think that the company would look at the common problems and try and fix the issue. But they seemingly have yet to make an attempt to fix the common and perpetual problem of the hinge!!! GUYS COME ON!!!!!!!! Not adding a photo, there are plenty of them on here already.Isaac09

Our doberman broke the door out initially, it was put back in place. The 2nd time he broke it out some of the plastic fasteners broke off. My SO ended up modifying the door with an aluminum strip and all new hardware. It's been broken off several times even with the new modifications. The key backs fall off and we didn't end up using them anyways to begin with. The frame is solid, we got the wall kit which is flimsy and had to seal ourselves but nonetheless it's installed. I'd love to order another model that will fit the already permanent opening. As of current, our heat's turned off until we figure out what to do to fix the door. It's not strong enough for large dogs, they bust it right out!Bunnyfromdahood

Purchased this for my small dog. This does not work for dogs, only cats due to the distance from the pet collar hanging magnetic pendant and the doors sensor. The instructions indicate that the pendant has to get with 8 inches to activate the door. I tested it and had to get within 4-1/2 inches away. Even for a cat with a smaller head than most dogs, the collar placement may not be close enough to activate the door when the pet's nose tries to push the door open. My small dog was very frustrated since the door would not open. Does not work as described. The SureFlap door uses a microchip to activate the cat door. My cat has always had a cat door but used to wear a magnet on his collar that would activate the door. Now I don't have to worry if he loses his collar because he can still get in. Very easy to program. Just push one button and the next cat (or dog) to walk through the door is recorded for the door. My cats use a regular cat door so switching to this new door was really easy for them and the controls made it easy for me. The Sureflap is a great product, easy to install and by following the setup guide, quite easy to program. It has stoped the neighbors stray cat from making itself at home stealing our own cats food and the fights when it would just come inside. My only problem is to somehow get our own pet cat to want to use it. Seems to be quite stuborn and will not exert enough nose pressure on the flap to overcome the magnetic latch. I may need to carefully dismantle the unit to remove the magnet and then see what happens. We have a seven month old puppy with tiny bladder syndrome so she needs to go outside frequently. However, we also have two cats with feline leukemia and they must stay inside. We ordered this door and it arrived quickly. It took a few hours to install it in the porch wall, mostly time consuming because of the type of wall we had. Once it was in, it only took a couple of days to teach the pup to use it. It’s not very loud so that is good. The delay between the time the dog approaches the door and the time it opens is fairly quick. We were a bit worried that the male cat (who wants to be the man about town) would follow the dog out because the delay from the time the dog goes out and the door shuts seems rather long. However, the cat realized pretty quickly that he couldn’t get outside by himself so he lost interest in trying after a couple of days. We are quite pleased with the dog door. The only problem we had is the collar that the sensor is on. It didn’t stay snug around her neck so she managed to take it off and chew up the sensor. Learn from my mistake and run far away!!! This door was somewhat convenient when first installed, but I quickly found that the transmitter didn't always work, which left my dog inside or outside at times. However, with the first hard rain, this door became a disaster. The door flap leaked water all over my floor, both under the flap and down through the body of the dog door. I didn't discover the flooding until a large puddle had developed, warping and splintering my hardwood. I spent two hours on my knees mopping with towels and trying to seal things with duct tape as the rain continued to flood in under the flap opening. When I called the company, I was told that, since the door had been purchased over 90 days prior, that "the credit card company won't let us do a refund so we can't" (obvious untruth) and that the owner would only let me return it for store credit. They had no interest in finding out what the problem/defect was and trying to cure it or change it so as not to do this to other consumers. I'm was already out the cost of the purchase, hiring a contractor, and having it installed, and now I have to buy a new door and have it put in, as well as repairing my cupped, splintering flooring. Do they really think I'd want to have store credit to buy another one? This failed experiment has cost me well over $1000 so far. The door itself is great. Sturdy, the magnates are strong, and it's very durable. I was looking for a door that would keep my cats in and let my dogs come and go and this one does just that. Mind you I can't promise it's a cat-proof door, I'm sure some cats, especially bigger ones, could push it open. But for my two little kitties it's perfect. I should also note I bought the bigger door as I have two large dogs. Why I docked a star: When you buy this door, be aware that it is ONLY the door. There is no backing or tunnel. If you're sticking it in a doghouse or something that's fine, but if you're putting it in a door or a wall for your house it's definitely going to be an issue. I was replacing an old door and had to seal the other side. It's pretty unusual (at least I'd think) for a dog door to come without any backing and had I known that ahead of time I probably would have bought one that did. This is an AWESOME dog door solution. We purchased ours in 2011 and it works great. INSTALLATION: I’m not handy so we had a carpenter install the door. It wasn’t a problem for him. We live in an old house so rather than cut the original 1920 door, we bought a door from Home Depot. TRAINING OUR DOGS:: It didn’t take long for our dog to learn how to exit the house and reenter the house. WHY I LIKE IT; Versus a flappy cheap plastic door…this has two major advantages (1). More secure. For a large door, a flappy door can be easily broken into (just crawl in!) where this door would require force and would set up an alarm, and (2). Very weatherproof. The seal is tight, so hot air (summer) and cold air (winter) doesn’t continuously lead in. So there is a comfort and a cost savings factor. DURABILITY: In 7 years (Our dog uses the door about 5x a day, so that is about 13,000 up/downs!) we have had 3 issues. The incredible customer service person (Deidre, who has worked there for about 20 years) is extremely knowledgeable. She walked us through one problem in less that 5 minutes. She helped us fix another problem which took about 20 minutes. And the third issue required a new circuit board which under warranty was free (and out of warranty about $80) and once we received it, took about 15 minutes to install. My wife and I used to work at Purina for 17 years and 12 years respectively, so we know alot about dogs and cats. Our jusdgement is this door, although costly up front, is very well worth it. After reading all of the reviews, the VERY common problem is the hinge. This is going to be my 3rd or 4th door and second to purchase (the sizable hole is hard to find a replacement for), most EVERYONE has had the exact same broken and weak point of the hinge. Some of these comments are from long enough ago, you would think that the company would look at the common problems and try and fix the issue. But they seemingly have yet to make an attempt to fix the common and perpetual problem of the hinge!!! GUYS COME ON!!!!!!!! Not adding a photo, there are plenty of them on here already.Isaac09
I've had this door for a year now, and after a year of modifying, and remodifying, I give. Simply not a great door for strong dogs. Our doberman broke the door out initially, it was put back in place. The 2nd time he broke it out some of the plastic fasteners broke off. My SO ended up modifying the door with an aluminum strip and all new hardware. It's been broken off several times even with the new modifications. The key backs fall off and we didn't end up using them anyways to begin with. The frame is solid, we got the wall kit which is flimsy and had to seal ourselves but nonetheless it's installed. I'd love to order another model that will fit the already permanent opening. As of current, our heat's turned off until we figure out what to do to fix the door. It's not strong enough for large dogs, they bust it right out!Bunnyfromdahood
Purchased the door about a month ago. We have 4 dogs ranging in size from 6.5 lb to 60 lb. All of them use the door even the little guy. The big dog did not need any training at all he instinctively new when it went click he could go! I was concerned about the reviews but it seemed to me that these were all very large dogs by height and the photos of the installs seemed low to me. I would recommend the product. No more getting up two or three times a night. YAAA I installed it myself, granted I am more of a handyman than most, but I am also over the 65 mark +. So I would expect the young bucks to do it even faster. But you do need to have a supply of the D cells. Batteries are not what they used to be and you only get about a month or a little less use. I am concerned about how long the tag battery will last, time will tell. Great Productricky5437

We wanted to keep out new kitten inside whilst allowing our existing pets (2 small dogs and older cat) to come and go. Unfortunately, this product is virtually useless- will allow any animal to exit, schedule must be the same for all pets (not good when you have a dog who needs the loo throughout the night?), and if you have to override on the door itself, you have to reimpose the curfews through the app manually. I bought it on line with a few hesitations. It is the only viable option for us with 2 greyhounds that won't use a traditional dog door. It arrived quickly but unfortunately without instructions for the Rfid tags. I installed it using the video supplied which got the basics working. It occasionally struggled to close the door. It took a bit to get to talk to someone (possibly due to covid) but once I could talk to Roger he identified the problem over the phone which I then quickly solved. Although it passed the friction test it needed new rollers on the door. Roger also emailed me the Rfid instructions and now everything works very well. It is worth persevering.Harry V.

Learn from my mistake and run far away!!! This door was somewhat convenient when first installed, but I quickly found that the transmitter didn't always work, which left my dog inside or outside at times. However, with the first hard rain, this door became a disaster. The door flap leaked water all over my floor, both under the flap and down through the body of the dog door. I didn't discover the flooding until a large puddle had developed, warping and splintering my hardwood. I spent two hours on my knees mopping with towels and trying to seal things with duct tape as the rain continued to flood in under the flap opening. When I called the company, I was told that, since the door had been purchased over 90 days prior, that "the credit card company won't let us do a refund so we can't" (obvious untruth) and that the owner would only let me return it for store credit. They had no interest in finding out what the problem/defect was and trying to cure it or change it so as not to do this to other consumers. I'm was already out the cost of the purchase, hiring a contractor, and having it installed, and now I have to buy a new door and have it put in, as well as repairing my cupped, splintering flooring. Do they really think I'd want to have store credit to buy another one? This failed experiment has cost me well over $1000 so far. The door itself works great and at first all was good. Unfortunately the door only works with the collar which is junk and even after you buy their expensive batteries will not work because it is junk. Honestly the first time your dog gets the collar a little wet, for example running through sprinklers it will stop working. Do not buy.aaron.brown03

We used a PetSafe door for years at our old house. For our new home, we bought a door from HomeDepot on line with a pre-installed panel insert. Our old door had the sliding plastic panel with a spring pin so you could keep your dog in, and the raccoons and alley cats out (and sometimes our dog when she is too wet to let back in). This model ONLY comes with a flimsy plastic cover that wouldn't hold back a strong breeze, let alone an animal of any kind. The very nice customer service lady tells me there is nothgin i can do to modify the door using PetSafe products. I am hundreds of dollars out on the door and the installation, and now i have to spend hundreds more to pul the entire panel out, replace with wood(?) and then buy a new dog-door and install. You can't close this door – what use is that. Thanks guys….
I purchased this door at least 5 years ago and every year we’re replacing the plastic adapter that attaches to the hinges that hold/support the flaps. We’ve had to order the whole door replacement kit to fix this problem and now once again, we have to order a whole kit for these My pictures show the extra parts collection needed to replace the 4 plastic adapters and the adapters after they break and crack from dogs using the door on a daily basis.Edman
