This kennel is strong. The tie-down holes, one per corner, go through both the top half and the bottom half of the kennel, which is an excellent improvement over no tie down holes. Another improvement over the old version is that water cannot collect on top since there are no bowl-like indentations on the top. The door is heavy construction, and can be mounted as Left or Right swing. I put the kennel on the passenger's side of the vehicle so that I can use the empty space behind the driver for carrying a jug of water, leashes, and other stuff. The advertised length is 40", but be aware that the usable length or "inside" length is 33". This is adequate if your dog is 33" or less from the top of the tail to the end of his front nails, while lying in the "sphinx" position. ONE CON: There are no drainage holes in the bottom half. I plan to drill my own (well, get the hubby to do it). A suggestion for the manufacturer: Make a Truck Version of the kennel. It would be the same as this except for two changes: (1) Add drain holes, and (2) Make the top rear panel (opposite the door) from transparent acrylic, so the driver can see through it. Although the carrier was more expensive with Hayneedle, I ordered 2 because they prominently advertised that it was the color Bleached Linen and everyone else was showing a two-tone tan and black. I have 2 in Linen already and wanted 2 more to match. The ones I received were tan and black. The carrier quality is fine and up to the standard of my 2 older ones, but these are not as advertised. Great kennel. Even better shipping, came to my house in 2 days after ordering. I wouldn't go off of the weight recommendation when purchasing this kennel for your dog- the XL says for dogs 50-70 lbs and my golden is 60 lbs however my golden although being within the weight limit was a tad bit too long for this size. I did take it back to my local Petco to exchange for a slightly larger size (size 40 inches in length) and the store's customer service was phenomenal in helping me with my exchange. I got this for a ~60lbs. labrador retriever and he seems to love it. Big enough on the inside for him to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably. It's sturdy, but not so heavy that it doesn't move around a little bit when he changes positions. It was easy enough to put together. A couple of the plastic screws didn't seem to have the ends filed off all the way (hard to describe but basically instead of a flat end, the plastic stuck out a little extra on one side instead of being flat across), which made them harder to fit straight through the holes in assembly. Fortunately, they send a few extra, so I had enough that were straight enough to put the crate together. Also, just be aware of the plastic bottom – I ran my hand across the bottom to clean it before putting it together and scraped my hand on a piece of plastic that stuck up a little (it was like a little ring manufacturing imprint). I filed it down before letting my dog in so he wouldn't get scraped on it, but just something to be on the look out for.Labbadabbadoo
The sizing recommendation by the manufacturer seems to be off. Dimensions are not the actual dimensions if you were to take a measuring tape and measure yourself. For my 55 lb border collie mix who sits at 27 inches tall and stands at 37 inches long from nose to base of tail a large would not fit. I ordered the XX Large and that is a way better fit where she can actually sit without being hunched over. This was purchased for air travel as well so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The material seems relatively durable but it did arrive with a large crack so I will be exchanging. Compared to the Petmate Sky Kennel, this kennel seemed a little bit thinner in material and not as study. However, I order a Sky Kennel in a size Large so perhaps a sizing difference might have affected this. The XL size can be hard to find. Was out-of-stock at Petmate, so I signed up for an e-mail alert when in stock. I am confident I received an alert just as soon as it was being manufactured. I really appreciate that. I ordered two for my Aussies. Yes, is a tad large for them, but they've used this size since they were young, and sleep in them. They can turn around easily in them, the crate has very good air movement, and the sides are straight with no lost space inside as so many have with curved sides. One cover was damaged in shipment. I let Petmate know on a weekend and got an immediate response from customer service. I just sent them a picture of the damage and had a new crate in a few days. Great experience all around. Shipping cost was high, but that's part of the time we live in. I'd been looking for this crate at other locations for a few years. Never found it in XL. Was well worth the shipping cost to me. This is my second purchase directly from Petmate — each experience has been great.

So my dogs are rescues. The first one hated the metal wire crate. 3 years & another rescue added to our pack I decided to try crating again to save my home. Putting this together – I would say that the plastic is a good construction, the clasps and screws are great, and the metal bars for the windows look to be a decent quality. They ship you extra clips and screws in case you have a problem. I personally don't like the wheels (on any crate), so I'll leave those off and the pet bowl might be okay if I was sending the dog via airplane. The Large size isn't very large in my opinion. A dog should be able to stand up, turn around and lay down. I think this crate is more like a 50 pound max than 75. My 10 week old Golden Female Retriever will likely outgrow this kennel in 6 months and be in that weight range. In a way I'd like to exchange it for a bigger one.RichH

I was appalled at how much pet carriers cost in pet supply stores, so I decided to look here, and the price was much better. I have two cats and a large carrier for both of them, but most often they go to the vet one at a time, so I wanted a one-cat carrier. Possibly I should have gotten a size up from this, as it's a rather snug fit for my 10-lb kitty, but it's a lot easier to transport. Unlike my larger carrier, this one requires actual nuts and bolts to hold the top onto the bottom, so it can't be latched open from the top. The door also takes a little jiggling to lock all the way, though it opens in both directions or can be lifted out completely. The construction is quite solid, however, and it worked just fine on my last trip to the vet. Just keep in mind that it really is for SMALL pets. #sweepstakesSallie G
Tiny and flimsy. I don't like carriers that are this short. I bought this for my small cat and she can't even stand up in it. This is a very large kennel. It's perfect for a German Shepherd, Husky, Lab size dog etc. Very easy to assemble. The door works flawlessly. I got this because I have 2 senior dogs a Retriever and a Collie mix and needed something to secure them in the back of my suv when taking them to the vet or groomer. Wow this is exactly what I needed for my favorite fur baby on the planet. It was so easy to put together by myself without any issues. It’s thick sturdy plastic that will last years even decades. My doggy loves to get in and lay down even when we’re not traveling. flying my 2 kitties cargo was an ordeal that i absolutely DO NOT EVER want to go through again.(im sure it wasnt even that bad for them, but it was terrible for me!) ultimately though, it had to be done. ive never shipped/flown a pet before so this all began with a search for a crate. petmate skykennel was the obvious choice. even though they're cats, my boys are big fellas. i went with the medium size so they'd have extra room. the crates were exactly what i needed. only thing i will say is, i did order an extra set of all-metal bolts/fasteners (from amazon); the ones that come with the crates are ok, but the overruling word on pet cargo travel seems to be all-metal is required. maybe its just required for international flights? either way i ordered a set. glad i bought ONLY that from amazon, though!i was about to buy the crates from there too, then i thought hmmm maybe someplace else had them at a better price…and yep… "someplace else" sure did! I did a lot of research before we decided to by the extra large Petmate dog crate. We currently have the "Giant" dog crate in a bedroom for our mixed malamute–but we have to disassemble it to take it out of the room. We need the dog crate for when we take our dog camping. The last time we took him camping, on the last day, we left him in our cabin for a few hours. When we came back, he had tore the curtain and blinds apart on two different windows. We spent hours trying to get new blinds and I had to sew the curtains. So, this crate in mandatory if our dog is going camping again! We currently have a fifth wheel trailer that we camp in. Also, the metal dog crates–our dog can get right out of them using his body!Diane
While certainly not inexpensive, it far outprices the alternative for a crate that meets all the requirements for airline travel for my German Shepherd. Years ago I also used to travel with my Dalmatian and I used the Petmate Sky Kennel then. Both dogs felt comfortable in the kennel at home and so having to step into it to be loaded on a plane was not a struggle. The only negative is the food/water tray. It's for a rabbit, not a 90 pound German Shepherd, but that's any easy fix for me, but the manufacturer should reconsider.

My GSD pup is crate trained. I purchased my first PetMate plastic crate in 2004 and never had an issue. When my GSD got too big for his wire kennel, I upgraded the size and got a PetMate Ultra (for its airline approved status). For three solid nights and any day time crate use highly distressed my dog. No one in the house slept. He was quite agitated (barking, clawing at the crate bottom, etc). He could not sleep or lay down in the crate. On the fourth night, I put him in the crate with the same result. Ten minutes later, I took out the old 2004 crate (flat bottom, no injection mold markers) and popped him in it. He sat down and gave the biggest sigh. I finally understood he had been in distress because of the new crate. On inspection, I discovered these round things under the bottom, pressed into them with my forearms and immediately felt the pressure points/pain. Who thought this design was a good idea? Did PetMate even try it? I beg designers to sit in it, lie down in it, press their forearms on to these circle things. Question your motives. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a cheap excuse and terrible quality. I’ll be cross-posting this comment on multiple pet store sites. I’m so unimpressed with this design. The incredible distress my dog endured because of shoddy design is unacceptable. PetMate needs to do better for the pets you aim to help. PetMax shouldn’t sell this product; they should ensure the pets they serve do not experience stress or injury.Ginn

Most of all, our dog took to it the first time. We had the S, same company. Uma is getting big now. Of course, we chose the same company and same product, just L in size. When a puppy, accidents do happen. It is easy to clean. Uma is about 20lbs now and can stand up in the kennel. Still plenty of height room. She may become 30-40lbs and this kennel will be all we need. Our use is for nighttime and when we go out. We have the gray which does not stand out. It is a neutral color and looks good in your kitchen, bedroom or where you keep your dog. The kennel also provides a rectangular cage on both sides on the top half so the dog can look out. We bought this for our American Bull who is not very big at 35 lbs for camping and she loves it. Ours was exactly as it looks; red with blue trim. We've used it in the house and bought a furry mat for her to sleep on. We recently bought a Staffordshire Terrier who is now 6 mos and 40 lbs so we're going to buy this in large for him, and we already bought him his own furry mat to sleep on in it. If your dogs are trained to only sleep in them they will not try to escape. These kennels are not made for all day kennel training. Here's the deal…I have a Westie that whined and fidgeted on a 5 hour car ride. Everyone was frustrated so this carrier was enough to keep him in one place during the car ride. True, he did figure out how to "nose" the zipper open. But a firm and loud "NO" stopped that and he was good for the rest of the ride. I'll use it again on road trips. This is not the answer for a permanent kennel, you'll need something sturdier, especially if you'll be leaving your pet alone. But it's great for car trips or keeping him calm when guests come over. We needed kennels that could be there when we need them and didn't take a lot of space when we didn't and these are the perfect answer. I'd only use them for temporary types of uses. They're probably not good for keeping them in while you're at work unless the dog is fully crate trained, and then I'd still feel better knowing they were in a wire or plastic crate so they couldn't rip their way out and get hurt or damage things. I got this for a ~60lbs. labrador retriever and he seems to love it. Big enough on the inside for him to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably. It's sturdy, but not so heavy that it doesn't move around a little bit when he changes positions. It was easy enough to put together. A couple of the plastic screws didn't seem to have the ends filed off all the way (hard to describe but basically instead of a flat end, the plastic stuck out a little extra on one side instead of being flat across), which made them harder to fit straight through the holes in assembly. Fortunately, they send a few extra, so I had enough that were straight enough to put the crate together. Also, just be aware of the plastic bottom – I ran my hand across the bottom to clean it before putting it together and scraped my hand on a piece of plastic that stuck up a little (it was like a little ring manufacturing imprint). I filed it down before letting my dog in so he wouldn't get scraped on it, but just something to be on the look out for.Labbadabbadoo
The sizing recommendation by the manufacturer seems to be off. Dimensions are not the actual dimensions if you were to take a measuring tape and measure yourself. For my 55 lb border collie mix who sits at 27 inches tall and stands at 37 inches long from nose to base of tail a large would not fit. I ordered the XX Large and that is a way better fit where she can actually sit without being hunched over. This was purchased for air travel as well so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The material seems relatively durable but it did arrive with a large crack so I will be exchanging. Compared to the Petmate Sky Kennel, this kennel seemed a little bit thinner in material and not as study. However, I order a Sky Kennel in a size Large so perhaps a sizing difference might have affected this. the size is perfect for my Husky but the lock sucks. in fact, the lock doesn't even exist anymore. I don't remember how long after purchase it was destroyed but there weren't the same size in stock so I've been forced to rig it but only as joke because we both know there is no lock but as long as I'm still home he'll play along. just don't leave your pet in this kennel if the purpose is to prevent them from escaping. So the continuing saga of shipping an 8 week old golden pup. We got pre-approved for this crate for our puppy going form Portland to North Carolina. The United air freight office in Portland is a bit over enthusiastic! They decided that even tho the pup could stand up, turn around and was clearly happy, he needed a bigger crate. At 6 AM in the morning at the airfreight, United has no crates so they tell me to go find one if he is to go out. I go to three other airlines and hit gold on Alaska (they are awesome). They had a 200 crate that the pup happily goes into and back to united. OK to fly. I them return to Alaska to ship his brother in the same size crate that was turned away and off he goes with not a hitch! Ughh shipping pups is not for the mere mortals!drdawg
