I have been using these large Permate dog houses to house my Nigerian Dwarf goats for many years. They have made "affordable housing" for my goats. I will say that my bucks (boys) are much harder on the houses than the does (girls). Both genders jump on top, but the bucks crack the rain shield by jumping on top of the houses. This happens after a while, not right away. I don't blame the company that makes these because they are intended for dogs, not goats that love to climb! I do wish the tops would be stronger to prevent this problem from happening. Another area to improve design would be for the top to somehow lock on to the base. When my Great Pyrenees (GP) dog goes inside to lay down, the lid can lift/tilt off. The large size is not big enough for a GP. The price keeps going up, and I'm not pleased with having to pay more. I wait until the neighbor club coupon comes out to buy any needed replacement houses. Over the years I've bought countless Permate Large dog houses, so I know these pretty well! Looks very nice and hardy but it floods when it rains, I don't know how but the water gets inside and it is too much water. I put a crate pad inside for my outdoor cat to stay warm and went to check on my cat a few hours later after it rained, and the pad was soaking wet not to mention the house was full of water more water than what was outside . The dog house comes in two parts – top and bottom. They do not snap together; the top merely sits on the bottom. No hardware is provided to attach the two and even if there was there are no holes through which one would thread screws or bolts (or whatever) to keep the dog house together. I use these for my goats because these houses are inexpensive but the goats knowingly and regularly have fun pushing up on the exit/entrance hole to "break" the house into two pieces. These are nice dog houses. They are light weight & don't look like they are very warm, but they actually do a good job, my border collies like these a lot. The extra neck or tunnel entrance is nice to give them some extra protection and privacy. They stand up pretty well to puppies chewing on them to. I recommend this dog house.Iowafarmgal
I bought my first about 20 years ago, then shortly after bought another. My dogs passed, so I gave them to a neighbor, which still has them in use. I recently got a medium breed puppy, so I went and got another since I had such good service out of the first two. I would highly recommend to anyone with a pet outside. I mistakenly bought the Large doghouse for dogs up to 90 lbs. But my 5 month old coonhound was too large for it. I returned it and ordered the X-large doghouse and it is the right size. Unfortunately, the doghouse was broken in two places, probably due to the way you ship. These doghouses are delivered without any protection and will crack or break when sliding into anything. I own 6 of these quality XL dog houses for my Great Pyrenees dog, as well as, my pygmy goats. My goats actually prefer them to there fully enclosed barn. MINNESOTA Winter or Summer, they love to cuddle sometimes 2-3 per igloo. I have never needed to use the flap doors. I think the ventilation is more important. As a bonus they are a great climbing structure, even my guardian dog can be found balancing on top to get a better view of potential predators in the distance. One temporary drawback is the base can be difficult to disassemble from the top, for the first few cleanings. But a large screw drivers works well to pry them apart and they "break in" quite quickly. I bought to take my new cat to the vet. He was only 9 lbs at the time so I assumed it would be more than enough for him. Upon bringing him home it literally fell apart and he got loose outside and had to be chased down. I needed a carrier and saw this online. There were 2 left. I went in to get one. None of the carriers of any size were boxed. I only saw one and looked it over with the size of carrier I wanted in mind. It seemed to be the right size, so I took it to the cashier. On the way home, I saw a black plastic patch on the hood hanging open. I tried to close it, heard a crack and discovered one of the tabs on the patch had completely broken off. On closer inspection at home, I discovered that there were supposed to be 2 plastic patches on the hood with 3 tabs each. Under these, the hood is indented as though these are places for storage or something. So, now I have a broken patch in one spot and no patch at all in the other spot on the hood. The kennel itself was easy to assemble, seems sturdy enough, and is the size I wanted, so I think I will keep the kennel, but I wish manufacturers wouldn't add bells and whistles to their products if the bells and whistles are only going to break and fall off. I had been rigging my dogs summer tent to shelter my stray cat..I fed her, so she’s mine lol…but it just wasn’t cutting it anymore and it is oddly cold this winter here in Alabama. I use these for my nigerian dwarf and lamancha goats…. In addition to our barn, as additional cover and housing. The little ones got breat but so do the full soze 3 year old lamanchas. Although I bought the door I'm not sure it will work as I want. I bought the Igloo and door for feral neighborhood cats to stay warm this winter. My one local outside cat walked into the Igloo and napped, but this was after I installed the door, flipped it up and taped it up inside. I taped it up in order to let cats get used to the Igloo and door after being installed. Later, after I know cats are going into the Igloo I will release the door and let it hang normally; hopefully, the cats will get used to going in and out of the Igloo and pushing through the door.Ward
The door seems to be working as designed and my dog quickly learned to use it with no problem. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is the difficulty in installing it. There is so little space to hold the nut to put the bolt into (the bolt cannot be put in first!) that my awkward hands could not install it as designed. It wasn’t necessarily the product but we paid and ordered the kennel on a rain check with additional sides. Blaine’s never called us. After a month we called to see if it was in. Our order had been canceled by Blaine’s by mistake. We reordered. Two weeks later they called to say it was all in. We hooked up our trailer and drive 45 min to pick up “part” of the order. We felt lied to because they called originally to say it was all in and then we drove almost 2 hours round trip to get a partial order. Canceled the rest of the order and bought it somewhere else. I would have gave this a 5 star. Item was as described and great price. The reason why it's a 4 is because when we got there to pick it up after they had told us it was ready..the kennel did not have the door with it..we had to search for it. It was not like the other exact same kennel that they had actually wrote the other customers name on so they could pick it up closer to the entrance with all 4 sides. The product is what I wanted and needed. There was one problem which I believe was not the manufactures fault, but the fault of the employee that loaded into my trailer and I didn't see it until I was setting it up and it was the last panel (One on the bottom of the bundle) there was a bow in the bottom pipe. I live 70 miles from the store and needed the kennel right a way. My dog found it right away which meant more blocking in that area. Happy with the product not with the handling/loadingSue D
