Harness To Pick Up Dog For Sale (2024 Update)

This thing really bailed me out and saved my back while my chocolate lab was recovering from a muscle tear. It gave just the right amount of support she needed for me to be able to assist her in getting around and particularly getting up stairs. It is also easy on and off so it's very convenient to use. My ONLY negative is that the description said dogs up to 90 pounds. My lab is a little hefty at 78 pounds and it BARELY fit around her. Another inch or two of diameter would have been ideal.sadie_clint

Love the product but the dog I purchased it for is too big to fit in it. I will save it in case my middle dog ever needs it. Please let me know if you ever find something that will fit bigger dogs, but made out of the exact same stuff so it is light weight and easy to pack up without taking up much space.tank

Seems like good construction. I liked the pads on top to prevent pinching, but overall, it is still the same standard harness you can get everywhere. Unfortunately, I am still on the hunt for a good harness to use for running with my dog. The harness rubbed under his armpits and rubbed them raw. The look of the harness is great however the material cannot stand up to chewing which is not covered under warranty. I bought one yesterday and this morning I left to get breakfast and when I got back 20 minutes later he had chewed through one of the straps and had taken a chuck out of the nylon canvas chest piece. Rugged ,tough , durable harness . Works like it should . It takes a little time to get a proper adjustment , unless your dog is growing it's a one time thing . We like it better than other harnesses we have . I find it laughable that people would give a poor review because their dog chewed on it . That's on the owner and their poor dog . This is a good product. It is a really long harness so it bunches up in the middle when my dogs sit and when we are walking sometimes. The quality of the material is good and I do not feel like they are going to pull out of the harness. I do have an issue with the sizing chart. I got a large because that is what I normally have to get for my labs and then after the order looked at the chart. It showed that I should have gotten an XL at least. The large fits both of them fine and I have a 50 lbs and 80 lbs lab!Huntere

I picked this harness because it looked comfortable and tough, both highly important things when it comes to gear my dog wears. My dog is a husky/border collie mix and walking him with only a collar is unpleasant for both him and me. With this harness I have much better control with him, and he seems happy to wear it. What a fantastic harness! My 90 pound dood is a consummate outdoorspoodle and now he can pack his own water, snacks, and frisbee thanks to the bungee cord feature. The harness is wonderfully customizable. I have a Huge, deep chested giant pal who is wearing the 2-3X size. The straps are incredibly adjustable at the shoulder, neck, and across the girth to fit a wide variety of pup shapes. The material is extremely durable, seems to resist staining (I give it a quick rinse when my mudpuppy has really had fun), and most important, the harness is lightly padded for comfort. My pal literally jumps for joy when he sees it because he knows he's off on an adventure. I also love the bright yellow which pops at night when we are out exploring. The bungee cording is threaded though material that feels like the hook side of velcro. I plan to purchase the Backcountry X Petco Go Bag so we can carry even more fun along on our adventures. I really liked this when I first fitted it on my cairn terrier. I had it snug around his tummy and the front velcro was secure. On our first outing he took off after a bunny and the velcro just busted open and he came right out of the harness. I'm lucky he ran into some bushes and not into traffic. When our dog outgrew here last harness, I wanted something that was durable and had the ability to add patches as she is still in training and has social anxiety. We love to hike, but was discouraged by most of the harnesses we purchased in the past as they would just slide around and my dog didn't like using them. This harness however, my dog actually gets excited to wear… likely because its comfortable and it means we are out on another adventure. This harness is impeccably constructed. Definitely worth the cost. We purchased the harness and the backpack attachments and love the versatility of the system. Our puppy is slightly leash reactive so we loved the ability to add “ask to pet” and “in training” patches when we’re working with him. I bought this harness about a month or so ago for my Plotthound Lab Mix! This harness is a very great quality harness and my dog is comfortable and happy in it! He is a working dog so this harness is great for when we are on the move or running! The neck area has a bit of stretch to it so if we need to make a sudden stop and it pulls on him he wont be choked! It has a pretty good wide open space for working dog patches or stickers! Our pittie is about 30 pounds and he is not even done growing. He is full of energy and excitement when we go for walks, so it’s extremely imperative for me to have a harness that I can rely on for sturdiness to hold him steady. What I love about this harness is, just that! I had an incident before with a dog jacket that had a built-in harness – forget about it! He saw another pittie who was as playful, slipped right through it and started running. Imagine my fear. Now that I have this great harness by EasySport, I am very confident that it will never happen again. The relief is immense. Despite my dog tugging his leash at times, this harness is so comfortable for him. Not a trace of skin redness caused from it even after all that craziness he does. Trust me, my pittie is strong and yet, it’s a piece of cake for this harness! Not a slight sign of wear and tear. This thing is built to last. I have been using the EasySport Medium Harness for about a month now. I live by the Dunes on Lake Michigan and take our puppy there several times a week. She is about forty five pounds and has quite a bit of energy. When first trying this on her I noticed I was able to loosen the straps. It was very easy and took seconds to loosen. The fit was perfect and she seemed very comfortable. I noticed the straps were thicker and when she pulled, I wasn’t worried the straps would break. While walking through the dunes, some of the pathways can be very narrow. I am training her to stay at my side while other hikers walk by. Having that strap at the top has made it even easier to train her to stay. Now all I have to do is tap the top and she knows to sit. The convenience of the strap and the padding added for comfort are two huge added bonuses for us. Our puppy is very active and while walking her in public I need to trust that I have the best products. I need to be able to rely on our leashes and harnesses so we can enjoy our walks with no worries. This harness has been fantastic. When she pulls too much or gets excited and runs, I know that the harness won’t break. I do believe I will need to size up soon. I ordered a medium and I think it fits very well. I am sure after a few more months of growing though that I will need the large. I will be purchasing the next size up when she’s ready. First, like someone else mentioned in the review. The harness attracts heat, it can easily overheat a dog in the warm summer days. I would recommend designing the harness so it has cooling pads. I love the front leash loop, I wish more of the ruffwear harnesses had both back and front loops. This harness is better in the winter months, I would not recommend wearing this harness during hotter days during the summer. My dog is an escape artist, has gotten away from several harnesses and collars, including several ruffwears harnesses until I found this harness. The three straps works wonders, she can't figure out how to get out of this harness and she hasn't yet. Only problem is that this harness can get super hot and the second problem is that the front padding is not really doing it's job. The adjustments are hidden and the front padding covers it up, however it feels like a rock and it puts pressure on the dogs chest if using back loop clip. I only use the front loop clip leash attachment which prevents any damage to the chest. I hope this helps, hopefully you can design a new version of this harness, I think all your customers would appreciate it 🙂 Overall, I would still recommend this product, though it does has it's flaws I purchased this harness from REI, so it may not say that the review is verified. I purchased the Switchbak primarily for hiking but ended up using it for Search & Rescue training. I really wouldn’t recommend it for either for a number of reasons. First off, the top is heavily padded and holds in body heat. The padding is totally unnecessary and an overheated dog in the back country can be pretty serious. Second, the pockets are almost useless unless they have equal amounts of weight on each side. I don’t load my dog with weight but just the weight of a 2’ leash in one pocket is enough to cause the harness to twist. Third, the D-ring placement is totally inadequate for a trailing dog. It’s too far forward and it causes the lead to get caught on the dog’s rear legs when making turns while trailing. In my opinion, the people designing these harnesses either lack experience handling working dogs or simply did not think through the design of the product. Unfortunately, this seems to be an issue across the Ruffwear line.Justin

Let me start out by saying that I love walking…I mean its kinda my stick, and since my dogs love sticks, (numerous can be found while walking), its a win-win; however, what isn’t so fun is carrying all the stuff required on a hot summer day, while walking or riding my bike. Bottled water, poopie bags, used poopie bags…don’t you love that left over poopie bag smell. No matter where I put the bag, there is always a little residual smell, and although the leashes I bought have a place to tie them after use, the feeling of a cold poop filled bag slapping against my waist as I walk….annoying to say the least. So, giving my dog pockets was the best solution…carry your own poop! The bag is not huge at all, so if you are a hiker and want your dog to carry some weight, this is not the tool for you. What it can carry is two water bladders (one on each side) with about 16oz of water each, a poopie bag roll, and one or two full poopie bags (as the water bladders empty). I have even had my girl carry my phone when both water bladders were not necessary. This is the maximum though. The side pockets do not expand, so the more you shove in there, the more the harness will stick out away from the dogs body. I will also add that my dog has issues with a lot of harnesses rubbing away her fur. I first ordered the Front Range harness for my Great Pyrenees and Lab. It worked well for the Pyrenees, but with the lab it rubbed away a huge patch of fur on her chest and even started to get little scabs. I then exchanged it for this harness, and her hair has completely grown back with no additional rubbing anywhere else. I only wish it came in pink, as everyone thinks she is a boy, but I thought the blue was the best looking color. Thank you again Ruffwear!Brittney K.

Firstly, I never leave my harnesses on my dogs because they will chew through them. I take them off as soon as I get done with their walks. My dog weighs over 100 pounds and is very hyper. She would pull and drag me every single time I walked her. The first time I walked her with this harness she instantly stopped pulling. She does start to when she gets excited but immediately stops once she feels the pressures from the harness. This has helped 100%!!! I did see some reviews that said the seams were weak, this product doesn’t feel like the strongest material, although it has held up fine with us, at the same time it is way cheaper than most harnesses that have the comfort design made to fit large dogs. I adopted a pitbull. His biggest problem and almost only problem now is that he pulls ANYTIME we're outside. On walks, taking him to potty, anything. I bought this harness for him, only used it on one walk and the next day i took him outside and it broke. First I want to say for all your pet owners out there that keep a harness on their dog you're wrong you never keep a harness on a dog. Harnesses are meant just for walking them and then they are to be removed immediately if you read the package it even tells you never keep a harness on a dog. I have been using this harness for the past 7 years and recommend it highly to all of my customers and other rescues and shelters are now using this harness. The key is putting it on correctly which is not hard you must fit it to your dog and it must be tight or they can get right out of it as far as the ring goes on it it's made out of steel and it's welded it is not flimsy and for the person that left feedback about plastic Clips there are none. As I previously stated I bought two of these harnesses in two different sizes. A small and a medium as I was not sure which would work. The small is a great fit for my 13 lb Shih Tzu. But this is summer and she is shaved down. I am going to use the medium size for winter to go over her sweaters and coats. She is also is not shaved down for colder weather so I tend to buy larger sizes for the colder seasons. Besides the price was great.Marlene D

You always use locking clips for all harnesses, the chest d ring open clasp was the thing a cat owner might invent, dogs are able to remove easily. Send these things out for testing. Like the design but let's get dog owners involvedMartyP

This is a wonderful harness. Zoe is a German Shorthaired Pointer and other harnesses looked as if they would make a ridge on the back of her neck…finally found this harness. One caveat, the medium I purchased didn't fit (meeting over the neck/shoulder), so went to the large which is a little loose, but working fine whether in field or town…it's comfortable, the padding is where it needs to be, works well tethered to the seatbelt coupler, she's happy, I'm happy…perhaps the medium would have stretched, but it would have been a painful experience for both of us just trying to make it meet.PollyKate

This is a great product. It is sturdy, fits well, easy to adjust and it WORKS! I've used several of these now in various sizes for dogs from 40 to 100 pounds that pulled hard until I fitted them with this front-mount harness. In days I had them walking docilely beside me. Thanks Coastal! BTW: one of my dogs(I'm a foster/trainer for a rescue) — a 50 pound pit bull, came in wearing a front-mount harness of another make and design: no where near as good. I was so excited to receive the harness – it seemed like a huge upgrade from the old one I bought from Tractor Supply that my dog was using. Well. It took twice as long as expected to arrive which is ridiculous when I paid for shipping. The shipping fees were refunded, but I had purchased the item with the intent to use it by a specific date which didn’t happen since it didn’t arrive until MUCH later. When it finally did show up the package was ripped almost completely open and the packaging of the product was all messed up which is also ridiculous. Alright it’s here, looks like **** but it’s here. It’s a much brighter blue than I expected which I like. It took a little while to figure out how to adjust as the ends were so firmly tucked into the harness I thought I was going to break it. Finally got it on and adjusted and “Meh”. It’s not deep enough (front to back) in my opinion, and my dog is not an odd or unusual shape. I do like that it covers less surface area, she appears to stay cooler (but a double coated black dog in the humid Midwest is always hot). It does sag when wet (which is almost always as she swims regularly) BUT it dries and goes back to the original fit which is a pro I guess. I say I guess because I didn’t expect a harness I paid over $80 to sag at all when wet but ‍♀ It doesn’t show any wear yet which it shouldn’t for only having it 2 weeks. It does shift like crazy. Not as bad as the cheap tractor supply one, but again I expected ZERO shifting from the $80+ harness. Honestly I probably won’t buy again. I was super excited to find a harness with everything I wanted: reflectors (which the ones on this harness ****, seriously for $80 y’all couldn’t put reflective piping on all edges?!), a handle on the back, bright blue, goes over the head/ NOT a step through and had a back leash clip. But honestly I’m pretty disappointed. There is a lot of room for improvement in what I consider an expensive harness (more reflective piping, padding under the middle set of buckles, better fit, better choice of shipping carriers). I’m not going to get rid of it and it does fit better than the Tractor Supply but I don’t absolutely love it like I hoped.Seva P.

I was looking for a inescapable harness with a nopull front attachment for my dog. Roxy is a 50 lb husky and she does lots of hiking, biking, and skiing, so I needed something that could hold up for heavy use, but that will also allow my mother to walk her around without worrying about getting pulled over or having a loose dog (Roxy tends to be a little less respectful with leash manners with my mother). Pros: Front attachment-it does the job well and is more sturdy than I had anticipated. It's not just a thin fabric loop; it's actually hard and appears to be well attached. It also doesn't pull the chest plate down or over the shoulder when it's engaged, which is nice. Body coverage- I like that there is less bulk and fabric over the back. Roxy overheats easily, so the lighter profile (compared to the Web Master) keeps her cooler. Handle- doesn't seem like it is flimsy and the chest piece provides nice support under the dogs body. Escapability- It doesn't budge. Granted, Roxy is a pretty good girl, but I had her brace and tried to pull it off from the front and it stayed in place well. Caveat, see fit. Overall comfort and look- once she'd adapted to the rear strap around her ribs, she didn't seem to notice it was there. I like the color as well. Cons: Fit- Roxy's girth is 27.8 inches, so I got the medium, which should have given her a lot of wiggle room. The girth straps have to be taken all the way out to fit her. However, the neck straps have to be taken almost all the way in to keep the harness at her chest and prevent a gap up front that she could get her foot through. It does fit if I do this, but I could see this being a real issue for differently shaped dogs or a dog with similar shoulders, but a larger barrel. I'm not sure if it will fit her when she gets her winter coat. Overall, I think it's a good harness if it fits your dogs body. We'll see how it holds up with use!Brianna B.

My girl discovered early on that she can back out of her harness in a heartbeat. She can't back out of the Flagline harness (yay!) and – more importantly – if needed, I can pull on the leash / harness without fear of hurting her. (There have been a couple times when we've encountered dogs who are too friendly — having the Flagline harness on my girl made it much easier to pull her back to a safe distance without fear of hurting her or having the harness pop off at a bad time.) The harness is easy to put on / take off. It's strong. The reflective trim helps make her more visible. The adjustable straps make it easy to size up during the winter time when she's got winter coat(s) to accommodate. Having clips for closure is so much nicer than harnesses with velcro closures. (Velcro closure doesn't last long – and trying to wash anything with velcro – oy veh!) The price was a little more than I thought I'd spend for a harness – but having a harness I can trust and that will last is worth every penny. 100% recommend!Karen G.

Great fitting harness and the adjustable neck section is great . I've had other harnesses in the past and whilst they fit my English Staffordshire around the body I found they got to a point where they were difficult to get on and off over his big lump of a head . Overall a great product and I'll definitely look at getting the bigger one once he outgrows this one .Scott M

I have a 70lb Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless). I purchased both the Hurtta Cooling Coat and the Swamp Cooler Dog Vest by Ruffwear. Both are made from similar material and work the same way. The Hurtta coat has much more coverage, has extended hind end flaps and front chest flaps, resembles a horse jacket. Whereas the Ruffwear is more of a fitted vest. I would have given the Hurtta Cooling Coat 5 stars however, the stitching that secured the chest strap isn't reinforced and tore out of the material the first time used. I then outfitted the dog in the Ruffwear Swamp Vest, which worked beautifully. Since my dog is hairless it was easy to feel how well the vest worked. Placing my hand on exposed skin, then touching skin under the vest, there was a noticeable difference in temperature however his skin was dry – just cooler. I have stitched the Hurtta strap back on and feel it will be equally as good if not better than the Ruffwear due to it's increased surface area.Laura

This Voyager dog harness is great for my pup! I am training him to walk on a leash and this is so helpful so that I don’t pull on his neck. I got the size XXS for him as he was 4 lbs. He is now almost 8 lbs and it still fits him but I am going to buy another one in a bigger size so I can keep it until he is fully grown. They are adjustable so I will probably get size Small. I abdolutely feel in love with this harness (by far the easiest to get onto my puppy). I love is so much that I jought 6 of them in the past 4 months. Why did I need to buy so many one may ask…becauae that is how many the puppy chewed through in that period of time. I ended up switching brands after the 6th one. My Dodo and I love this harness! He seems to be comfortable all day long no matter what we do? First, the best parts: This harness works great! Rufus (catahoula leopard hound/mix) does not pull AT ALL anymore and he seemed to "get the idea" all on his own with little to know training . . . it is almost as if being led from the front j ust instantly changed his mentality. I have always been able to walk Rosie (American foxhound) like a puppy on a string and sometimes almost had to pull her (laziest foxhound anywhere) so it is also nice with her to not be pulling her by the neck . . . she plods happily along. It's easy to adjust, easy to put on, easy to take off, looks very nice, holds up well, does not chafe. Here is where there is room for improvement: as noted in some other reviews, the sizing is off, but what I noticed is a bit different . . . both dogs measure very close to the middle for the size I ordered (medium) but all of the straps had to be adjusted to the tightest it would go in order to fit and it still seems a bit loose around the FRONT. I tried turning it upside down as noted by the company in response to some of the reviews, but it seemed to fit almost the same. So you may want to order a size smaller or call the company before ordering to be sure that it is going to fit. The other thing I am not fond of is that the buckles seem to be right at the armpits and that bothers me probably more than it bothers the dogs. However, here is another upside! When my (adult) son accidentally put the harness on the dog incorrectly, we found that it can also be used with the D-ring on the back instead of the front (at least on these breeds) and it works beautifully, so if you want the leash to attach to the dog's back rather than to the front, it's sort of a "bonus" use of the harness. Rosie (the easy walker) seems to prefer this Other than the sizing issue (which is probably also the issue with where the buckle falls), I LOVE this harness and it has truly "turned my dog around . . . The chest adjustment is at its loosest, but the chest/belly straps are almost maxed out on tightness, so I couldn't size up to make it better fit my 50lb lab/chow mix. The chest strap also slips down with extreme pulling, which fortunately for my pup isn't super frequent, but it has tripped him once. I think the instructions say that the chest straps should be tightened if this happens, but they also say that the harness should be a T shape, and if I tighten the chest strap, it definitely pulls behind his front legs. I think this is a decent harness, it's just not great for broader chested pups.kelmel

I bought this 2 weeks ago. My standard poodle puppy (8 months old) would jerk so hard on his leash when he saw another dog on our walks that I would practically get pulled off my feet. With ice on the sidewalks, I was afraid to take him for a walk. I went to Petco to buy a prong collar out of desperation. An employee who helps with their dog training described how this harness would be a better solution. This harness has worked like a miracle! My dog walks calmly by my side. If he starts to pull, the leash puts a bit of pressure on his chest, instead on my arm. It also turns him towards me slightly instead, and I redirect him with the “heel” command.” I wish I had known about this collar sooner. If you have a strong dog who pulls on the leash, try this. The best investment I have made for my puppy, who is growing fast and extremely jumpy. It got to the stage where I found it incredibly difficult to walk her, but the Halti harness works a treat! The Halti double ended lead can be wrapped around you so you use your body weight rather than your hands/arms to stop the pulling. I can literally walk hands free! You can then take the lead off the front part of the harness and it becomes a 6 foot lead, which is great for recall training. If you take the whole double ended lead off, the harness has about a 1ft lead attached to it, which is easy to grab if you need to when you let your dog off the lead. It has turned our dog walks into a pleasure rather than a nightmare!awchan2801

These harnesses worked in a pinch for us. We took our dogs camping with us and we wanted to make sure to keep them safe. Pros: It is easy to put the harnesses on and take them off. They are a light weight material which allows for fast drying and minimal weight on the dog. They utlilize the the over the shoulder Y design style which is the least likely to impede a dog's range of motion in the front legs. The color was listed as salmon red but is more of a burnt orange which is actually good because of how close it is to safety hunter orange. Cons: This harness utilizes plastic buckles that are light weight and don't hold up to rigorous use. We don't utilize the leash clip on the rear portion of the harnesses because it is not sturdy if the dog pulls and this harness is not designed to handle load bearing forces. The only measurement used for sizing is measuring around the dog's mid-section or "girth" (not a good representation of many dogs). The harness does not come down the back far enough. Overall: The only reason we bothered getting these is because the other ones we ordered we placed on back order from a company that does custom dog gear and we wanted to keep our dogs safe from hunters or other people. As a professional dog training and care company we would prefer to go with other options because we have a high standard for our personal dogs. If you are on a budget or need something quick to satisfy a safety risk by all means get these or something similar, we certainly did. No one piece of equipment is the best, they all have their pros and cons and each buyer has factors that influence their buying choices. I prefer these over other harnesses due to the free moving open shoulder design. Love how lightweight but sturdy they are. Would like to see a small handle added. There is some shifting while walking due to leash angle and the fact that in many small dogs, the neck straps just don't seem to fit perfectly. If it's Tight enough for their neck. you can't slip the harness over the dogs head and loose enough to do so is too loose on their neck and allows more shifting. My dogs aren't heavy pullers so these issues dont detract too much from the value of having a very lightweight but strong harness that is easy on and off.Cynthia R.

My 68 lb. golden/standard poodle mix Gibson and I are longtime Ruffwear fans and have had several of their products over the years. He measures 32" around the widest part of his chest, so he's right on the cusp of the M or L sizing. He has always been a Large in Ruffwear harnesses (the Front Range specifically), but I had to return the Large Hi & Light for a Medium as the straps around the neck were way too big, even tightened all the way! The Large harness gaped at the neck. I was super bummed! Thankfully Ruffwear returns are super quick and easy, so I received the Medium replacement quickly, and it fits well, although maybe a little short on his torso. It seems fine, and he seems comfortable, so I don't think it's a problem, but my mom said it looks silly on him (rude!), which made me question whether that's how it's supposed to fit. It does seem to fit a little shorter on his torso than the Front Range, which, again, he wears a size larger. I did also want to mention the larger sizing because the sizing tool states to take the larger size if between sizes, which Gibson is, and I found that due to the length of the neck straps, we actually needed to size down! Hope that's helpful. Gibson is kind of deep-chested and leggy but generally seems pretty well-proportioned. He's built more like a poodle than a golden, for reference. Overall, though, I adore the color, and I absolutely love how lightweight the material is! Gibson gets hot easily and living in the South, I want to keep him as comfortable as possible, so this is an excellent summer alternative to the Front Range. I love the option to clip the leash to the front of the harness, although I do wish the front clip wasn't made of fabric (metal would feel more secure). The only problem I have is that the harness twists on him when he pulls even the slightest bit, and I find myself adjusting it on him frequently. This might be user error, though, and I'll keep working on figuring out the best fit for him. With a few tweaks, it would be perfect!Chelsea M.
