Best Underground Dog Fences (Jan 2023 Update)

We recently got a new Bernese Mountain dog puppy and we have a 7 year old Dachshund mix who we rescued 4 years ago. I received the kit very quickly through the mail. The instructions were pretty simple and I was able to run the cable around the perimeter of my property very quickly for testing it out. Our puppy got corrected about three times before he truly figured it out and learned to stay away from the perimeter. Our Dachshund, who is known for bolting as soon as the door opens, didn't take to it as quickly. "Can't teach an old dog new tricks?" That was not the case. After she ran through the fence a few times, she was scared to go outside at all. Being a rescue from an abused family, this is understandable. After working with her for a week, showing her the boundaries with the shock correction turned off just utilizing the audible correction and the vibration alert, She started to get comfortable outside again and also stayed away from the perimeter. The beep and vibration was enough to get her attention and she returns into the property. At this time, I spent half a day with a spade shovel and buried the fence a couple inches into the ground. I found that the signal was a bit less, so I took advantage of the signal strength dial and turned it up and tested it again. It took a bit of trial and error, but I got it dialed in pretty good. This has been an absolutely fantastic device for the dogs. They can go outside and run around like a dog should be able to do! Now I just have to figure out how to stop my Dachshund from digging up critters around my AC unit, LOL. I think I am going to build a decorative fence around my unit for this. I purchased this system about three years ago. It worked great for my GSD for about two months.. then he learned he could run through it.. and did so on a regular basis. If you have smaller dogs.. would highly recommend this fence system.. for bigger dogs… Not so much. Oh and i recently acquired a Caucaision Ovcharcta… she is now 8 months old and goes through it like it wasn't there. For me it was a waste of money. I also upgraded the burial wire to the max available… still runs through it. Out of options.Voodoo

I have two pit bulls and a bull terrier. I bought this in hopes it will keep the dogs in the yard without a physical fence. At first the dogs were very scared to go outside but after a little training and some play time in the yard they have learned their boundary. Be sure to not adjust the width control while the dogs are wearing the collar they may get an unexpected shock. Be sure to read the instructions and then read them again before trying it on the pets. Show them the boundary on level one which is just a vibration and a beep.Then set it to level two which is the lowest shock. I bought this as a last resort and man how i wish id bought it first. We have 3 dogs. 1 a very pigheaded pitbull ( 18 mo) that likes to test us at every turn. 1 German Shepard (4 mo) who is way to smart for anyone's good as she can open all our doors and gates. And 1 Cane Corso Doberman mix pup so far he's a good pup but he's only 7 weeks old. We have tried everything to keep the other two in ( 8 ft chain link. Hot wire. Adding an inward incline at the top. Burying the fence.) but they always found a way out. We installed this fence 3 days ago in about 2 hours and have already introduced the dogs to it. Our gsd is already steering well clear of it. Our pit on the other hand is being more stubborn about it his color is is set at max and he is still trying to run through tho he bring himself back inside the barrier very fast once he crosses it. So if you have smart stubborn hard to contain dogs. Just get it. You wont regret it.Womack02

I installed this system about 2 weeks ago and, have done some light training. I first tried the wireless system but, it had issues with coverage and dead spots in my yard. I have a miniature Daschund and I have found that she quickly learned the boundaries almost to the point of being gunshy of going out into the yard. Probably my fault. The other system zapped her a few times and, now I'm going to have to back off and work into it more slowly. We had a problem of her running off and paying absolutely no attention what so ever to our calls, scolding or going after her. Very frustrating, and dangerous to her going across the street not to mention also my wife and I get very tired having to go after her!!!!! At this point with only the audio she will NOT cross the boundary wire! Good for us and safer for her! Right now she has a problem with going out in the yard but, in time and as we work with her I'm sure she will regain her confidence. The system was fairly easy to install, took me about a day to do it right. Toughest part I had was going across the 24ft driveway, several years ago I put caulking in the expansion joints and it was pretty tough to clean it out. Had to go about 6" at a time. I did mine above ground and, I did opt for 14ga wire, the 20ga that came with the system was way to flimsy. My choice because I like to do things thoroughly with no problems when I'm done. Used almost 500ft of wire and about 160 yard Staples. Barely visible and I can mow over it with no problem. I think this system will do the job for what it is intended to do and way less expensive than having a fence put up. I didn't want to fence in my whole property at all. Just going to have to work more with the dog and, after awhile I'm sure she will feel at ease with going out in the yard. My wife and I will not have to worry about her running off and being injured when we are outside working or relaxing in our patio or deck. Pet Safe is what it means and what it will provide. My review is on the Basic In-Ground Fence System by Pet Safe. This in ground fence system worked great for our little dog. The directions are well written and easy to follow. They offer several options for installation, in ground, above ground, with a fence, and around your garden and the trees. They are thorough and easy to follow. After installing the unit, I tested it following the instructions, and everything was working. There are 5 levels of electric stimulus. The collars are fully adjustable for the shock level, and the controller adjusts the distance the collar starts to activate. The collar has a separate adjustment for the level of shock; 1-5. The wall controller adjusts the width of the zone, 2' wide to 10' wide. If your collar is one level 1 (low) and the width is at 10 (maximum), your dog will not get a shock, only a low level beep. You have to adjust the collar to 5 (high) to train the dog the first time. One or two zaps and the dog will learn to associate the warning beep with the zap. Then you adjust the shock level down to 2 or 3 for most dogs. I have read that dogs need a visual barrier, they won't remember the wire is buried, once they associate the visual barrier with the electric fence, they know it is there. I would recommend this in ground fence for your dogs to be able to run around the yard.Rose28

This took my husband and I about a couple of evenings to install. You bury the lead wire around the perimeter you don't want your fur baby to cross and the collar is light and works nicely! I have a jack Russel/Chihuahua that likes to snoop and sneak out of the yard and this little device has solved that problem. I only needed to use the tone mode and that worked fabulously. I bought an additional collar for my blue heeler. She is a bit more strong willed and faster, so static mode worked for her. I'm thankful for this! I installed this fence for my dog on a town lot that was around .25 acres. I must say you should definitely read the instructions fully before just starting this installation as you have to do some prep work, and this is not simply a plug and play fence if you want to trench it in. I think if there was an existing fence or something you could probably get away with just hanging the boundary wires directly to it but chances are that is not the case always. In my case I used a spade to kinda make the trench on my laid-out boundary line. I did this after a heavy rain as that made the task by hand much easier than the ground being rock hard like it is when it is dry. I stepped on the ground with my body weight after the installing the wire to kind of tamp the ground back in place and let mother nature do the rest over time to get the ground to settle. I did have to cross my driveway and really just shoved the wire in the expansion joint and shoved it down as far as I could. I just have to be conscience that I do not pierce the wiring when doing my edging. For my lot it took quite a bit of the 500 feet of included wire even though I consider it to be a pretty small lot. My dog has used wireless electric collars before so the training was not so difficult, but I did put out the included flags on the boundary line during training to make sure the boundary training went smoothly. The collar fit my dog nicely. As far as hooking up the boundary lines to the transmitter it was easy. I installed the plug-in wall unit in my garage and actually drilled a hole through a brick wall to get the boundary wire outside. I used caulk to seal off the hole with the wire to protect the weather and critters getting into my garage through the access hole. As I mentioned that since I have used wireless systems with my dog before the training was minimal and the system is working nicely.Country Man

We do not have a fence in our backyard and have to constantly leave our Poodle on a 30 foot leash when she runs around backyard. But I hate that she is even on a leash and can't run and live free. This fence is a perfect solution since we can not afford to install a proper yard fence. We set up the boundaries and it was easy to follow directions. I purchased the cat collar since she is a 8lb poodle this collar is much more soft and less bulky for her to wear daily. Bought this product online and picked up at store. The spool of wire inside the box unwound and a mess. Plus the wire was all intertwined making it impossible to untangle. All other contents were fine though. Probably should have returned it to the store!BK13822

Uncoil and check wire before installing. Quality control problem – after digging and installing most of the wire, the last 20 or 30 feet at the end of the coil had breaks in the protective coating every few inches. As we needed the broken wire to finish the loop, every break had to be repaired with electrical tape adding a couple extra hours to finish the install – frustrating. was required.Dive

This product is a blessing! My dog was an escape artist, but no more. He also is more into the family now, then trying to run and get out! He learned real quick where his boundries are and stays within them! I opened one of the side gates and tried to call him through it and he wanted no part of it, until I shut down the gate and then he came to me! The wire hook up was light weight and cheap. When the connectors fall of you can twist the wire around the pig tails from the outside alloawing it to work.tippintfarms

This product will shock your animal inside! We have a 6 pound chihuahua who is now utterly confused. The collar picked up on the housing wiring and went off repeatedly before we could figure out what was going on. Maybe it's just our home, but we are really having to convince the puppy that it's okay to be inside.Dennis

Put in the training as recommended and you can't go wrong! It has worked really well for my rescue Bull Arab x who had severe separation anxiety. I thought it may take much longer to train him but he learned quickly and was comfortable within 3 days. I didn't have to take the stimulation above 3. We purchased the High Tech Pet fence and it really changed our lives. It took about 4 hours to install the wire around our 3/4 acre yard. Set up took just minutes. The training was simple and easier than we thought. Robodog was trained and contained in a total of 4 days! The Humane Contain electronic fence is clearly the best one on the market. I am an electronics engineer and a pet owner so, I am aware of the top notch engineering done in the pet field by High Tech Pet Products, the manufacturer of this system. But, I still did my homework before deciding which product was best for my home and my two dogs. I looked at features, specifications and price and decided the Humane Contain system, provided that it lived up to its claims, was the best value to be found. Upon receiving the product from Sam’s Club, I must say that I was impressed with the quick shipping and, most of all, the quality of the product. The base station transmitter is fully water sealed for outdoor mounting which was a plus for me because I wanted to mount the unit on the outside wall of my utility shed. It has a rechargeable battery back-up which I have not seen on any other electronic fence. The transmitter has a user display with an array of illuminated indicators that show you status of the battery, the field wire, the power mode and the overall system condition. I found this very useful because it let’s me see the system condition at a glance. I also noticed that it alerts you with an audible tone when the back-up battery charge is low. There is also an audible warning if the field wire becomes disconnected or broken. The large field adjustment knob is also a good idea. Of course, I couldn’t help but hook it up to an oscilloscope to check out its radio properties. The transmitter works at 14 kilohertz. This is different from the what competing systems that state an operating frequency of 7 – 10 kilohertz. This means that the Humane Contain was not likely to be affected by my neighbor’s electronic fence. I also noticed that the radio signal is very well generated with a digital code embedded in the signal. Pretty advanced stuff for a dog product. The collar also seems to be unique in that it delivers its shock stimulus in short pulses. This seemed curious to me until I read the manual which states that this works better at teaching the dog to respect the boundary without immediately causing trauma and confusion. In training my dogs this appears to be the case although, I have not tried others brands for a comparison. The collar is fully waterproof – a big, big plus – and it has a built-in test button that sends it through a diagnostic mode verifying that the battery, radio receiver and output stimulus are working. Another major concern is the collar battery life. The unit uses a proprietary battery, something which I did not like at first because you have to get them from Sam’s Club or a Humane Contain dealer. I purchased the extra battery 12 pack to be safe. After using this system for nearly a year now, I am happy to report that the collar batteries are lasting about three months so I am set on batteries for a few years. Hands down, the most impressive feature this fence has to offer is the proportional stimulus. As the dog approaches the boundary the rate of shock pulses increases. One of my dogs stops within the first few pulses. The other one (surprisingly the smaller one) goes much closer to the boundary wire and is willing to take more shocks before finally giving up and retreating back toward the house. All in all, I was pleased that I made the right selection by purchasing this system from Sam’s Club. My BF and I adopted a 7month old black lab. We live in the country with 45 acres, and know we wanted him to be able to run freely. However, he was getting more confident and running away to far off neighbors yards and not coming back. So, after a lot of research, and reading reviews about this product, we made the purchase, ordered a few extra spools of wire, and haven't looked back yet! We have changed the settings around a few times, especially during training, and are so happy with the product. The beeping & pulsating of the collar before the actual jolt is just perfect for our lab. He gets his warning and is already on the retreat before it gets intense. He hasn't tried to run through it, and when the line has broken, it was a very easy quick fix. the Instructions were 100% helpful, and training was a cinch! Having the double collars is awesome too, we switched out the tough plastic collar with a real-tree camo vinyl collar for the spring/summer and a blaze orange reflective one for the fall/winter. adding the transmitter piece was very easy too! I have recommended this product to a few friends already, and they have all been successful as well!vhartel9

One day is all it took for my escape artist to stay in the yard. We now know that our fur-babies are safe in thier own area, Sure beats running home several times a day to round them up. Very easy to install, took us about 4 hours from start to finish. We did not bury the wire (one is a digger) but put it into PVC around the yard. It protects the wire from lawnmowers, weed eaters and digging. The wite PVC also serves as a reminder to the dogs that it is the line in the sand to not cross. It was easy to put the wire around a herb garden to keep themy from jumping on it, My big guy will bolt to the corner of the yard but hits the brakes hard within five feet of the line. I set up the white flags around the yard so they will know where to stop. The directions were easy to understand and online had pictures to give us ideas and how tho set off areas. I would recommend the stubborn big dog to anyone who needs to contain their babies.jamieladie

This review is for the Dig Defence four pack animal barrier fence. This animal barrier is perfectly awesome for me to use around the bottom of the chicken coop wire to keep my dogs or critters from trying to dig under the wire into the chicken coop. It is extra nice quality, heavy duty metal fence sections. Each section is thirty two inches long and eight inches high and has a combined coverage area of over ten feet in length. I know this is mainly made to deter and keep dogs from digging under their yard fence but I intertwined the fencing legs in through the holes in my chicken coop wire and then drove it a little more than halfway into the ground to deter my dogs from digging at the chicken coop fence or any varmints. It is very easy to use and drives into even hard ground with ease with a small sledge hammer or any hammer will work. The legs, with two inch spaces between, are so thick and heavy duty, that they do not bend at all when driving them into the ground. I almost guarantee nothing will dig past these ground barriers as stout as they are.Ang03

These are just what I needed! My inside dog doesn't dig out when she is in the yard, she actually dug IN to come live with us as she was a stray and decided we looked like a good home, or maybe it was the tasty treats we fed her that enticed her to stay! Nonetheless, this keeps OUT the critters that love to come in my back yard (i.e. possums, raccoons, skunks, etc…) to eat the feral cat food I put out for my TNSR (trap, neuter, spay, release) colony. Our wooden fence has places that are worn away at the bottom, and these make a great barrier to fill in those gaps. The cats (and possums, I found out) can crawl over the fence unlike the skunks (they haven't learned yet, thank goodness! 🙂 I feel certain these would work beautifully for pets (dogs) that like to dig OUT of the fence, or try to squeeze through the bars of an iron fence. Just make sure you get the right size and drive them into the ground about 5", and you'll be good to go. Or stay! :O)siouxbee19

We have neighbors who don't seem to understand what a leash law means. It's not only annoying, but also gets our dogs (on their leads) sick from time to time. No, we don't keep our dogs out all the time, but do hook them up to a lead to use the bathroom then bring them back in. When the neighbor's dog does gross stuff in our yard, not only do we have to pick it up and dispose of it if we see it, we have to deal with our dogs smelling/rolling in/sometimes eating what the neighbor's dog leaves behind. (It's gross, but many dogs eat what other dogs drop.) These barriers are to the rescue. The back of our property has a fence that is not ours and therefor we can't maintain it. We can, however, add these strong no dig animal barriers on our side to keep the roaming neighbor dogs out of our yard. I have placed them in place without pounding them in yet so you can see the size. Because of the ivys growing near where I want the barriers I will need to put on long sleeves before installing them. Pros: Seem very strong. Seem very durable. The gaps are small enough to let smaller wildlife through while keeping out unwanted dogs. Heavy so dogs and/or other larger animals can't move them. Cons: None Suggestions: *Like many metals, there is a black residue on the metal. You will want gloves when installing (which should be worn anyway since dealing with metal–protects from unintentional scrapes) Overall I recommend these barriers! They seem like they will last quite a while, so I'm hoping they do.Homemaker

We purchased an in-ground system from this company about 20 years ago. The reason for this purchase was the transmitter wore out. Needless to say we were so satisfied with the first one we bought another one to replace it with. I only wish I could have purchased the transmitter only, bu oh well, now we have extra wire and flags and an extra collar for just in case.James

We have the invisible fence system for 4 acres. The Premiere Pet system works perfectly with the old collars and wiring for the invisible fence at a less expensive cost. I love it.Cindy

I hoped this would be as easy to set up as the description made it out to be, but the truth is this will require a professional to set up. The very first thing in the directions lists like 10 additional items and tools needed to set this up. I didnt have any of this "extra" stuff. upon further inspection of the directions that came with it I realized you have to purchase pipe to put the wire into and then bury it with the pipe. I posted an ad looking for someone to pay to help me set this up and no one responded to my ad. I got one response from someone saying that they could not help me set this up, but recommended the wireless version of this. I am now returning this mess and shelling out the extra money for the wireless set. Honestly this set is so complicated I'm surprised it doesn't require construction credentials to set up. This was a great big waste of my time and now I have to go through the trouble of returning it to put the refund money towards the wireless one. Money well spent, this is so worth it!! We have two dogs but we only bought this wireless dog fence with 1 collar to try it out to see how it works. We put it on our boxer to try it out because he is older than our German Shepherd. Long story short this not only contained The Boxer but it also trained Mimi (GS) where she is not allowed to leave.J.V

I found it worked good. It had a much larger range than I expected. So it took me a bit in lowering the distance my dogs could go. I am 100 ft off the road. And I finally had it to 50 percent. Which kept him far enough from the road. I was impressed. 1 dog systemmdre7733

Loose on my small and medium leash. No big deal. I took the bag to test fit a new leash at the pet store. Also take note of where the leash feed hold is vs the bag's elastic band on the top. Make sure they dont cover each other or rub. Different size leashes have different size clip and rope.wubwub004

I have a pup that is a large breed, he looks like I been feeding him steak and potatoes cause he's so dang big. He is ALL puppy though. Chews on everything loves running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Been trying to train him to chill with me, yeah, right. He wants to play. And because he wants to play, he wants to run every stinkin where. Decided, for my sanity as well as his safety, I'd get this thing. Put the flags out, set it on a low static charge, and it didn't take long before he figured it out. You DO have to WORK a dog with this. It's not just a plug it up and watch their hair shoot up when they get popped. Walked him around the perimeter for 7 days, he sees and sniffs the flags. After that, I let him run around, and he got popped maybe 3 times, and figured it out. Now he's pretty dang happy, and I can let him rip around with zoomies while I work in the yard. I have a 2 yr old LARGE French Mastiff that weighs 180ish! I bought with the (red in color) “stubborn” collar. We previously installed a wired underground fence. (Which I have to mention took 2 FULL DAYS TO INSTALL AND READY TO USE!!) My Bo would realize he was close to the boundary, take a step or two back then take a run right through it, with no second thought!!! We watched him do this several times. I guess he was thinking, well this is going to hurt but only for a few short seconds. Idk?? But it did NOT phase him one bit! I had talked to 4 or 5 people that had this system, so reluctantly I decided to give it a try. I thought to myself well if it doesn’t work I will simply return it, no harm no foul. My boyfriend had it installed and collar on Bo in 30 mins flat. We walked ole hard-headed Bo around maybe 4 times to show him the boundaries. Once he heard the beeping, he kept walking then he felt the shock 1 time and that must have been enough because he never ventured close again! It has been about 2 months of use and I would give it 100 STARS IF IT WAS AN OPTION! We live in a subdivision where houses are fairly close. I was ultimately worried that the zone would lead into the neighboring yard. (which was the #1 thing we are trying to prevent) And although it may, Bo doesn’t even attempt to go that far. I believe he now understands to stay in his own yard! Living in a subdivision, many people take walks and Bo just sits and watches them now!! Matter of fact, just to see, we have sent him outside WITHOUT the collar and ironically enough HE STAYS IN OUR YARD!! The ONLY complaint I have is the small clear piece on the collar broke off the first time I went to adjust the strength of the shock. So far it hasn’t effected anything so fingers crossed on that! Just an FYI, we set ours on a level 3 to begin with and my boyfriend was ready to give up, so I told him to have some patience and we just kept adjusting the level on the collar and we ended up discovering for Bo he needed to be set on a #6. Again, I repeat he weighs 180 lbs, and the Mastiff bread is KNOWN for their stubbornness. I would suggest starting at the lowest level for a smaller dog PLEASE! But, if you are hesitant as myself, about this system just give it a try AND I PROMISE YOU WILL BE SO SURPRISED!!!!! I love this system, and just hope that it lasts!!!!!!Owner of French Mastiff

It's been working great! We ordered the high tech pet humane containment system, and our pupper has been staying home! It only took about a day for her to learn, and now we are looking forward to purchasing ad ons like the barrier pad and the pet door that locks when the dog is away from the door.Jjp1234

I would give zero if it was an option. The signal only works when the collar is touching the wire. It went through the test phase totally fine, and so I proceeded to bury 500 feet of wire, only for it not to work. SO DISAPPOINTED AND FRUSTRATED doesn’t even begin to explain how I’m feeling.Courtneymb

Don’t waste your time on this very cheaply built system. The wire constantly broke. Collars had static noise. High Tech did refund, so that was a plus. We bought ours through Costco.Hntmom

We recently got a new Bernese Mountain dog puppy and we have a 7 year old Dachshund mix who we rescued 4 years ago. I received the kit very quickly through the mail. The instructions were pretty simple and I was able to run the cable around the perimeter of my property very quickly for testing it out. Our puppy got corrected about three times before he truly figured it out and learned to stay away from the perimeter. Our Dachshund, who is known for bolting as soon as the door opens, didn't take to it as quickly. "Can't teach an old dog new tricks?" That was not the case. After she ran through the fence a few times, she was scared to go outside at all. Being a rescue from an abused family, this is understandable. After working with her for a week, showing her the boundaries with the shock correction turned off just utilizing the audible correction and the vibration alert, She started to get comfortable outside again and also stayed away from the perimeter. The beep and vibration was enough to get her attention and she returns into the property. At this time, I spent half a day with a spade shovel and buried the fence a couple inches into the ground. I found that the signal was a bit less, so I took advantage of the signal strength dial and turned it up and tested it again. It took a bit of trial and error, but I got it dialed in pretty good. This has been an absolutely fantastic device for the dogs. They can go outside and run around like a dog should be able to do! Now I just have to figure out how to stop my Dachshund from digging up critters around my AC unit, LOL. I think I am going to build a decorative fence around my unit for this. I purchased this system about three years ago. It worked great for my GSD for about two months.. then he learned he could run through it.. and did so on a regular basis. If you have smaller dogs.. would highly recommend this fence system.. for bigger dogs… Not so much. Oh and i recently acquired a Caucaision Ovcharcta… she is now 8 months old and goes through it like it wasn't there. For me it was a waste of money. I also upgraded the burial wire to the max available… still runs through it. Out of options.Voodoo

I have two pit bulls and a bull terrier. I bought this in hopes it will keep the dogs in the yard without a physical fence. At first the dogs were very scared to go outside but after a little training and some play time in the yard they have learned their boundary. Be sure to not adjust the width control while the dogs are wearing the collar they may get an unexpected shock. Be sure to read the instructions and then read them again before trying it on the pets. Show them the boundary on level one which is just a vibration and a beep.Then set it to level two which is the lowest shock. Follow the instructions and be patient it took about 2 weeks for our dogs to get adjustedDonnyd123
