We bought this to keep our giant slobbery indoor heckin' chonka watered for a brief getaway, and on the whole it's hit the mark for that. At 4 gallons of water, with an optional activated charcoal filter pack, this thing will keep your dog(s) stocked with tasty water for quite a while (especially if you have smaller breeds). It's now our everyday waterer, and we fill it once or twice a month depending on seasonal weather. It's very easy to clean, with all the parts coming apart easily, and the huge openings mean everything's readily accessible even if you have larger hands. Between the easy cleanability and the use of Microban, I'd be comfortable drinking out of it myself after a fresh cleaning. It's never grown weird things or become discolored or slimy between cleanings. But. The 4-gallon model is also a giant, treacherous, clumsy mess when it comes time to refill it and put it back together. Unlike most of their older models, Petmate decided not to mold a handle into the jug on this one. While this would normally just make things slightly less convenient, this jug is also completely untextured and extremely slippery. If you don't manage to get the jug and your hands COMPLETELY bone dry, it can and will slip out of your hands, dump water all over the floor, and dislodge the carbon filter so you have to jam your arm elbow-deep into now-slightly-less-than-four gallons of water to reassemble everything. This giant, slippery, unmanageable bottle uses Petmate's twist-lock bottle top, so even if you get the bottle inserted on the first try, you often still end up wrestling with 32 pounds of sloshy slippery bulk trying to get it into its proper groove. Or, if you don't notice the bottle is slightly off kilter, the gravity feed never stops flowing and soon once again there's water all over your floor. (But, one the up side, once it's on there even your large dog isn't going to knock the bottle off its perch.) If you don't absolutely positively need the largest model, go for a smaller one. If you do, plan to throw some skate deck grip tape or the like on the bottle, and don't plan on passing refill duty off to your younger kids or smaller partner.C.M.
I purchased the 2.5 gallon gravity waterer. It is used by 1 dog and 2 cats. Problem is the water does not flow into bowl unless I tilt it. I thought the filter was obstructing it so I purchased new filter….Same Problem. Then I removed the filter…..Same Problem. Also my cats keep batting at it to get water and end up knocking the reservoir off the bowl…Flows all over floor!! Got a new Jack Russell and after much review of all water bowl products, I decided on this one because it is strong plastic, has microban and is made in USA (although it never says what things are from overseas). Unfortunately, this water "replenishing" water bowl does not work. Utter failure. The charcoal pack had to be removed completely as the water didnt flow. Still, the water does NOT flow…I have to tip is over myself every single time. When I inspected it closer the bottom of the filter part is completely on the bottom of the bowl. Unless the entire unit is tilted at a 45 degree angle, water does NOT come out. I bought this at Petsmart and i tried to take it back but I missed the return window by 2 days. Purchased for my dog, Ted. As I’d already got a smaller drinking fountain for my cats, which they love, and it’s encouraged them to drink more, I thought I’d get one for the dog. Ted was a bit hesitant at first, but once he got used to it he was fine. I still have bowls of water around the house but he chooses to drink from the drinking fountain now, apparently animals prefer to drink moving water and I suppose in the wild moving water would be the freshest form to drink. My cat has definitely been drinking a LOT more since I got this fountain. The downside is I have it placed on a rubber placemat, and it has developed some sort of black stuff underneath, I’m assuming because it always seems to leak out of the blue top piece when I refill it – really hoping it’s not mold but regardless it’s under the fountain and not effecting the fountain itself. Still not something I want near my cats water and have to clean frequently to ensure this doesn’t keep happening. I've had this fountain for six months. One of my cats has idiopathic urinary crystals, and was a VERY fussy drinker. Both my cats love this fountain and it has dramatically improved their water intake (solving the problem with the crystals). The noise is minimal if put together properly and kept topped up. It's the perfect size and an awesome little teardrop / yin-yang design. It took the cats a little to get used to it because the motor makes a bit of noise, but now they all love it – and are not begging to have the kitchen or bath sink turned on all the time! My friend/roommate bought this for her dog two months ago while trying to get her to drink more water. Her dog wouldn’t even touch this, so she gave it to me for my dog. My dog will drink anything so I had no issues with that but the quality of this product is so poor. First, the water reservoir has no seal on it so when you fill it up to place it in the bowl, it spills everywhere. The parts barely even fit together. The motor wasn’t working so I took it apart and putting it back together was a nightmare. I put it together with her when we first got it also and nothing would want to fit together then either. I purchased this fountain a few months ago. It worked great at first, then I started noticing the water was not flowing like it should. More like it was dripping. So theres 2 filters a debris filter just a filter with big gaps to let water through not debris floating in the water and charcoal filter to filter the water. You put the charcoal filter first which lets nothing but water through down a little step to a different section pumps it up through the debris filter and back into the cats dish. so instead of collecting all the debris in the second section using the step down it all gets stuck at the charcoal filter in the part the cats drink out of making the water gross very fast. The order of the filters doesn’t make sense debris filters are usually used to stop debris from clogging stuff but the charcoal filters in the way first stopping all the debris anyways getting clogged. The charcoal filter filters the water clean you already filtered it why does it need the debris filter after that are you saying that debris will get in the water after its been filtered that would defeat the purpose of this while thing. It need to be separating the gross water into the second section leaving the dish clean. Then run it through the debris filter and then the charcoal filter this whole thing is just bad engineering all aroundKeaton

My two cats have been drinking from this fountain for almost 18 months now. They used to drink from taps but now prefer their fountain. It's large enough they can both drink at the same time and the different water levels mean they can choose to sit up or crouch down, whichever they prefer. I leave it running all day and while the pump isn't as strong as it was it's still going! The noise problem other reviewers have mentioned isn't the sound of the pump itself but the running water. I bought this for my boxer to keep outside on the porch for when he has to be outside most of the day, which isn't too often, but I like to be sure he stays hydrated when he has too. First issues, the bottom part cracked I less than a month. Then my dog, who decided he was going to play with it, was able to easily remove the top from the bottom. I am an over the road truck driver with two dogs that travel over a quarter of a million miles a year with me. I've used this bowl daily for four years. I am on my second one, not because the first wore out, but because we left it at a hotel (eek!). I read the other review and I can say this: Don't over fill it. There's a fill line on the bottom part to guide you. To me, this seems like common sense since you are in a moving vehicle. Don't put the O-ring in the dishwasher. Like any other seal, the high heat will eventually force it to crack. It removes easily. It's hard to clean the inside without using a bottle brush, so here's what I do: I give it a soak with HOT water and a tablespoon of bleach, dump it out, scrub it with a brush and throw it in the dishwasher (top rack, without the O-ring). Comes out squeaky clean. As far as the dog "waiting for it to fill back up", it's simply not true. The water that's forced up through the drinking opening may not allow them to gulp the water down like a regular bowl, but they get as much as they please in smaller swallows. OK, so I'm no speed racer on the highway, IMHO speed should have nothing to do with it if you follow the fill guidelines and securely seat and screw on the top. This thing has held up to daily use and abuse like a champ. I highly recommend it. The only reason it got four stars was for the cleaning.Little Miss Elvee

Ever since I saw a guy with one of these at an Interstate 5 rest stop, I said "I gotta have one of those". So I got one, and now have another 5 years later. My two dogs flat wore out the blue "bowl". This is my only knock, I was surprised at that. It's plastic and I guess thousands of licks can do it in. The reservoir is tough, and has withstood many drops. I contacted manufacturer for a replacement bowl only, but it's not available for any less than the entire rig. I did buy another, so I guess I put my money where my keyboard is.onedotlow

I purchased this fountain a few months ago. It worked great at first, then I started noticing the water was not flowing like it should. More like it was dripping. A month later now the pump doesn’t work. I’ve purchased other fountains before and this one is the worst of them. I have a cat who is the only one who drinks from this fountain. You would think it could handle one pet. At least the others lasted 2 years before the pumps went out. So theres 2 filters a debris filter just a filter with big gaps to let water through not debris floating in the water and charcoal filter to filter the water. You put the charcoal filter first which lets nothing but water through down a little step to a different section pumps it up through the debris filter and back into the cats dish. so instead of collecting all the debris in the second section using the step down it all gets stuck at the charcoal filter in the part the cats drink out of making the water gross very fast. The order of the filters doesn’t make sense debris filters are usually used to stop debris from clogging stuff but the charcoal filters in the way first stopping all the debris anyways getting clogged. The charcoal filter filters the water clean you already filtered it why does it need the debris filter after that are you saying that debris will get in the water after its been filtered that would defeat the purpose of this while thing. It need to be separating the gross water into the second section leaving the dish clean. Then run it through the debris filter and then the charcoal filter this whole thing is just bad engineering all aroundKeaton
Pros: cats love the fresh water. Convenient for my multiple pet house. Cons: Had the same problem with two of these units that after awhile the gasket on the water chute breaks, there aren't any extra gaskets provided, the company doesn't sell replacement gaskets and hard to find the right replacement. As others said, if this gasket isn't in place, the product fails and water everywhere. I used teflon tape in place of the gasket when it broke today which seems to work for now. Unit is hard to clean. Some parts with the little nooks and crannies can get gunk build up. Weekly soak in bleach solution and using brush kit for thorough cleaning seems to work. We bought this to keep our giant slobbery indoor heckin' chonka watered for a brief getaway, and on the whole it's hit the mark for that. At 4 gallons of water, with an optional activated charcoal filter pack, this thing will keep your dog(s) stocked with tasty water for quite a while (especially if you have smaller breeds). It's now our everyday waterer, and we fill it once or twice a month depending on seasonal weather. It's very easy to clean, with all the parts coming apart easily, and the huge openings mean everything's readily accessible even if you have larger hands. Between the easy cleanability and the use of Microban, I'd be comfortable drinking out of it myself after a fresh cleaning. It's never grown weird things or become discolored or slimy between cleanings. But. The 4-gallon model is also a giant, treacherous, clumsy mess when it comes time to refill it and put it back together. Unlike most of their older models, Petmate decided not to mold a handle into the jug on this one. While this would normally just make things slightly less convenient, this jug is also completely untextured and extremely slippery. If you don't manage to get the jug and your hands COMPLETELY bone dry, it can and will slip out of your hands, dump water all over the floor, and dislodge the carbon filter so you have to jam your arm elbow-deep into now-slightly-less-than-four gallons of water to reassemble everything. This giant, slippery, unmanageable bottle uses Petmate's twist-lock bottle top, so even if you get the bottle inserted on the first try, you often still end up wrestling with 32 pounds of sloshy slippery bulk trying to get it into its proper groove. Or, if you don't notice the bottle is slightly off kilter, the gravity feed never stops flowing and soon once again there's water all over your floor. (But, one the up side, once it's on there even your large dog isn't going to knock the bottle off its perch.) If you don't absolutely positively need the largest model, go for a smaller one. I purchased the 2.5 gallon gravity waterer. It is used by 1 dog and 2 cats. Problem is the water does not flow into bowl unless I tilt it. I thought the filter was obstructing it so I purchased new filter….Same Problem. Then I removed the filter…..Same Problem. Also my cats keep batting at it to get water and end up knocking the reservoir off the bowl…Flows all over floor!! Got a new Jack Russell and after much review of all water bowl products, I decided on this one because it is strong plastic, has microban and is made in USA (although it never says what things are from overseas). Unfortunately, this water "replenishing" water bowl does not work. Utter failure. The charcoal pack had to be removed completely as the water didnt flow. Still, the water does NOT flow…I have to tip is over myself every single time. When I inspected it closer the bottom of the filter part is completely on the bottom of the bowl. Unless the entire unit is tilted at a 45 degree angle, water does NOT come out. I bought this at Petsmart and i tried to take it back but I missed the return window by 2 days. Hi, I bought this about a week ago and i just want to say it is intresting. While using, I found it’s not really for me as I prefer a hands on approach while caring for my pets. That said, this is a great investment for those pet owner who have a little less time in their day to day lives. The only real problem I had with it was that white moving it, water would leak. After a bit of inspection, I found an empty space under the tray that caused it. Other than that, I don’t have any complaints, it just wasn’t for me. This is a great fountain for small pets. If you have one pup or or a cute cat this is a perfect fountain that they will love especially cats. Cats love to drink from fresh water especially from fountains so they will be happy to have this in their home. My cats and dogs love this fountain but it is too small for the them to use 24 hours a day. We have multiples around the house and each animal has their own so the fountains stay clean longer and water does not need to be replenished as often. This one we actually use during the night time in our room because the size is perfectly small enough for our bedroom and holds just enough water to get them through the night. We just refill it each night when we go to bed and it lasts till we wake up and that is with two dogs and two cats. I have wanted on of these for my 5 cats for a while. However, I was not sure how they would react to it. When this came in I got it set up and emptied out their old water bowl and filled this up and turned it on. (Set up is very easy. You have to take the top part off and make sure that the pump is in the proper position, plus it suggest washing the parts of the pump that come off of the pump. After I did this I put it back together and inserted the filter snapped the top back on and it was ready to go.) I have 1 cat that is scared of anything. The other 4 are curious and will check things out. The first one to check it out was Hobbes. He is the head of the house and he went up to it sat there and looked at it for a while, then he got a drink out of the top tray. Next was Marmalade. He is my old man (17 years old) he sniffed of it and looked all around it then got a drink our of the bottom tray. Jo-Jo and Colby Jack sniffed of it walked all around it sat and looked at it, but I did not see them get a drink that first night. The next day they both were seen drinking out of the top of it. Calvin (my scared cat) hissed at it, hid under the bed, ran from it the first night. The next day I caught him drinking our of the top tray. I have not seen any of them drinking from the fountain part of it. I am just happy that they have adjusted so quickly to it and appear to really enjoy it. I had to share a picture of Colby Jack and Calvin even though I did not get a picture of the actually drinking for the fountain. They both love it now just as much as the others. I struggle to find anything negative to say about this pet water fountain! It's slightly wider than my old water dispenser and taller which I'm sure is more comfortable for my dogs. The water continually recirculates for fresh water. It does slightly hum, but when the water level is full, it isn't very noticeable – the recirculation of the water is more apparent (it is not disruptive). I have a very skiddish dog and I was nervous that would deter her from drinking water, but the hum didn't bother her at all and she was quick to drink out of the new fountain with no guidance/pressure/training from me. When the water level does get low, the hum does get louder. Originally, I thought it was a con, but after thinking about it, it's a good reminder for me to fill up their water fountain! Set up for the motor was fairly easy – the directions provided could have offered a little more detail on the actual motor part, but I figured it out quickly. Would definitely recommend!customkc

I’ve had this dispenser for around a year. When I was washing it in the sink, I think the water was just a little too hot for the bottle to handle. It warms the opening of the bottle. Wasn’t able to get the lid back on right after that. I wish they sold a replacement bottle. The lid is only four dollars out of the bottle messes up. I am sad to write this, but my China built waterer works better than this USA made product. Bought two from COSTCO and quickly noticed the water bottle was thin on one side and thick on the other. Of course, once inverted the thin section just collapses from the suction created by the upside down bottle. This company needs to rethink their manufacturing to better check for correct bottle wall thickness so it doesn't "implode." The puppy grew up and all of a sudden I have two large dogs that spend the majority of their time in the house. That's great but with the coming of summer and the growth of the pup I found myself refilling water bowls 4-6 times per day…every time I turned around they were empty. I knew this because one or the other of them would come over to me and just look at me expectantly…yup, the water was gone again. I wanted a gravity filler and I wanted large capacity. I also knew that lifting 4.5 gallons at a time was a bit of a stretch. I fill it up to about the 3.5 gallon mark and that lasts them 2 days. I'm good with that. The design is great although I did forget to put the black lid on once before I tipped it over. Don't ever do that…I had about a gallon of water on the floor. Fill it up to the mark you want, place the black screw-on cap on the container. Turn the bowl of the waterer upside down and place it on top of the water container, it has lips that tell you where to place it and then give it a little twist to tighten it into place. Take it over to where you water…still upside down…and then turn it over. Before the water spills out it will be in position and your pets will have fresh water – no muss, no fuss. Mine love the gurgle sound and love to drink from it while it's still gurgling 🙂starpath
