Best Dog Ramps For Older Dogs (Jan 2023 Update)

My little frenchie loves these steps to get up and down (after a bit of treat training!) from the bed. Absolutely worth it to keep her injury free from jumping on and off heights. Check your measurements, you can also get a 3 step if you have a higher bed or lounge you want to provide access to. Its light weight and stores away in cupboard when not required.Carolyn

This is an excellent set of pet stairs. I liked the information envelope included with the 'Hello' cards…so nice! It had a disclaimer regarding a non-hazardous odor…we did not notice any odor at all straight out of the packaging. The foam blocks are nice and firm, my 15 lb Boston terrier mix has no issues using them. I like the neutral color as well. Material seems to be of a decent quality. It was easy to put together as well, just stack the top foam block onto the bottom one, pull the cover material over it and zip. Have not had to launder it yet, but instructions state machine wash cold, gentle cycle. I'm curious how it will hold up to washing.MomInLa

We love these pet steps. I have two small dogs: a 10 lb chihuahua mix, and a 16 lb silky terrier with short legs. Both of my dogs were able to use these pet steps the very first day we got them. We trained them by putting little bits of cheese on each step, and a piece at the top. We tried these steps out with my couch, and on my bed, which my terrier struggles jumping up on, especially as she ages. They are a nice neutral gray color which worked well in both my bedroom and my living room. They are soft, plush, and very lightweight, so it was easy to move from one place to the other. Included in the box, was a note saying it might have a little bit of a smell from the newly manufactured foam. I smelled it a little bit when opening the box, but didn't even notice it again after the stairs were assembled. By the way, the assembly is just putting one of the cushions inside a zippered section. The rest of it was already inside. Very easy. It even included a nice note from the company, and three free blank greeting cards as a thank you for buying their product. We've had plastic pet stairs in the past, but had trouble with the legs falling off, making it unsafe for our dogs to use. We ended up getting rid of those. My use is unusual…NOT for a pet! This ramp fits perfectly in the width of our Class C motor home side entry door. I needed it to transport an electric Razor and a bike into the motor home with ease. It works great! It folds and stows easily in a lower exterior compartment. I suspect that it might be useful to transport my elderly mother up the ramp in her transport chair. She weighs 80 lbs, and the transport chair is very light, so it gives her an opportunity to have a little fun while traveling with us. Think outside the box! This was a life saver. My pug is 15 and needs help getting up and down from couch. It has 3 positions so it is not steep for an older dog to use. It is ready to use right out of the box. Looks like a nice piece of furniture. It is not to long and can be used in the smallest spaces. The carpet like material on the ramp, also has slip resistant material on it (like what is on the bottom of socks). The dogs love it and it does not bother their feet. When going down the ramp, they can go as slow as needed and not slide down. I highly recommend this product. It will not work with really high beds or trucks unless you add to it. But it is perfect for anything else including cars (if needed) It is very light and easy to move around. It is very sturdy and does not move when dogs are using it. Even my younger dog loves it and she is scared of everything. The first day we got it we used treats to get them to use it. I only took a few minutes and they loved it. We had foam stairs before this but my older dog was still having issues using it. Because of the material of the stairs, when going down, it would force her to go fast and slide. This does not do that and allows them to go as slow as possible (I know I repeated this but it truly makes a difference for an older or injured dog/cat.)Nic

this is the shorter length ramp. Not sure who they made it for?? Goats maybe?? because the incline is insane…. 😀 really! A dog that can climb that steep incline, and easily jump! So again, VERY POOR design and unusable. I'd guess a 67-70 degree incline – so crazy!! Don't buy this!adw899

Bought this for our boy who has been diagnosed with IVDD, along with some barriers to keep him from jumping instead. Not a lot of coaxing needed; He was a little nervous at first, but it only took a few days for him to be completely comfortable with it. I'm glad I got this one as the ability to adjust the incline just one notch made all the difference. The second I lowered the incline just slightly, all of a sudden he was completely comfortable walking up it. Now he is very comfortable with the ramp. I chose this one over others because I thought the landing at the top was a great touch. I only bought one because I wanted to make sure he would take to it; now I wish I'd just bought two to begin with. Would recommend.Chelsea A.H.

I've gradually noticed her favoring her hind legs a bit from time to time, so immediately started researching ramps for her to get onto the sofa, where she lays most of the time. Reading other dog owner's experiences and various product reviews I knew the walking surface and stability of the ramp would be crucial for success with my pup. She is very "skittish" about slick surfaces and any crinkling, banging for tapping noises. I didn't find a ramp I felt met all the key criteria and then remembered what Crusoe (follow the FB page) had been through and wondered if his parents could recommend a ramp. Sure enough, exactly what I needed with the DoggoRamp! It has a great non-slip rubber walking surface, can adjust to various heights, is excellent quality, and looks like a piece of furniture instead of some cheap thing you have to sit in your living room. My pup had NO issues whatsoever about walking on it and using it. Literally took less than 30 minutes for her to get the hang of it and use it (thanks for the training info as well)! I think this will be an important aid for her as she ages, and hopefully will keep her in fantastic health for years to come. I recently purchased a DoggoRamp bed ramp and a couch ramp. As a dachshund owner, I have ramps all over my house. I've purchased ramps from various vendors and have never been fully impressed with my prior purchases. They've all done the job, but they haven't really been pretty or particularly well made. When I received the DoggoRamps I was very impressed. They are well-made and feel very solid. My favorite feature is the small step at the top of the ramp. I notice my dogs really like it too since it eases them into the ramp. I plan on replacing all of my existing ramps with DoggoRamps – one at a time of course since they are a bit pricey.Olga S.

Just purchased this for my 70 pound elderly dog who has difficulty getting into and out of the car. I would have loved to keep this because of how well it was made, but it just didn't fit into the door opening of our new Equinox. Unfortunately the door didn't open wide enough. Also it wasn't long enough to use in the back lift gate. It was just too steep. Would be great in a regular car, but SUV's seem to be too far off the ground.Jodi

This is a nice sturdy ramp. I believe it may work well for vans but, with both of our cars (Chevy Malibu and Nissan Altima) the ramp does not have a level place to set it on. Our Golden Retriever tried it on both cars but it was to unsteady for her. I was very happy and a little surprised at how easy it was to return the product. I will be buying more products from Hayneedle because of their customer service.Dennis

It looks good, the arc is a bit high and the surface could have been more usable. Right now it reminds me of a sandpaper finish. Not real friendly for small dogs. Mine couldn't get a grip on it. I may carpet it for ease of use.Lori

I had a small sturdy table made to use this ramp along side my bed, and used velcro to secure the ramp lip to the table. So far neither of my dogs prefer using it, although both will use it when 'treat bribed'. Mainly because they're used to me picking them up. However, my aged cat loves to use it. In time and with patience all of my babies will use it. Meanwhile it's lightweight portability will make traveling with my babies for much easier. I highly recommend this ramp for use with any 'weight appropriate' animal that has difficulty walking or negotiating steps.Melba Y.

I have a senior dog that is having difficulty with stairs. I have several spots where a ramp is needed, with different rises, so I bought several ramps from several companies to see what would work best. My primary concern was length of ramp versus weight of ramp, as I have higher rises and in some spots I need to run several ramps with a landing pad in between. Discount ramps arrived the fastest. When they say lightweight, they mean it. It is not designed for anything other than a dog. It is very lightweight, which was what I was looking for because it will need to be set up and taken down repeatedly. However the design of the ramp basically has 3 aluminum rails that are the bottom edge supports and a center rail which run the length of the ramp, with a sheet of aluminum laid over the 3 rails and hinges in the center. The hinges don't relax to allow the ramp to go completely flat, so the ramp has a little bit of "spring" to it in the center. Also, because of my setup, a human has to step on the ramp in order to open and go in and out of the door. I am only 150 pounds, well under the weight capacity of the ramp, and I can walk on it without it breaking, but I can feel the sag of the sheet aluminum in between each of the rails where there is no support. It is holding with no issues, but I don't know how it will hold up over time. Also, one of the rivets in the center by the hinges popped the first time it was used, straight out of the box. One of my other dogs ran up the ramp and the "spring" in the hinge area seemed to be the cause of the rivet to pop as the dog caused the ramp to bounce slightly as it ran up the ramp. The ramp has been in use for 2 weeks now and no other issues have arisen. The other ramps I ordered from other companies have arrived and they are heavier, longer, and more durable, but are also not as easy to shift around. I have taken this ramp in the vehicle, since it is so lightweight, and it works well resting on the bumper of the SUV. Overall, it is an adequate ramp if lightweight is the primary feature you are looking for. It is the least expensive ramp I ordered, so the price is reflective of the sturdiness of the ramp.Pamela K.

We purchased the ramp for a large, tri-pawed dog who is sometimes afraid to go down a set of steps outdoors, and who has recently hurt his remaining back leg. We have tried to get him accustomed to the feel of it by laying it on the floor indoors in front of his food dish. We've had mixed success and recently, after a few weeks, we removed it. Because there is no latch to stabilize the hinged joint, it gives a little when he steps on it and it frightens him. It will be the same problem stretched across the steps, so we don't think it will have been a good investment, I'm sorry to say. Other than that, the ramp is lightweight and easy to handle.Sheila M.

I knew stairs wasn't an option so I got one of these wood bedside ramps and I absolutely love it. I like the ribbed carpet that covers it and that makes my dogs feel more secure when using it. I like how it is angled to run the length of my bed and having a tall bed isn't an issue since it has a height of 25 inches. It was very easy to assemble only took me a few minutes and all hardware for assembly was included. It is very easy to keep clean and I can easily move it into our living room during the day so my dogs can have access to the couch if needed. The weight limit is 120 lbs so I dont worry about it tipping over when my dogs are running up and down. The only thing is on wood floors, it will slide as in our living room, but we use a blanket underneath it and this sovled the problem. As long as it helps my dogs and gives them the ability to continue living a easy life, it is well worth it. I recommend this to any pet lover whom has a dog that is getting older, having trouble jumping on and off a couch or bed. Best purchase I've made.becky90

The ramp was definitely not what I expected from the photos and description. It was much narrower than anticipated and the height of the cargo area of our SUV made the angle of ascent very steep (we probably could have used a 4th panel). We have an older, 90-pound boxer who is very low maintenance. Our dog attempted three times to climb up the ramp and, as it was steep, managed only to scratch the emery-board type surface of the ramp as he clung for dear life! It also took up decidedly more room in our cargo area than we had anticipated. I think it was just a poor fit for our dog and our car. Returned it as it wasn't going to work for us, but I'm sure could work perfectly well for another dog and vehicle. Not happy that we have to pay almost a third of the purchase price to return it to hay needle.com.Marcela

EXTREMELY DURABLE RAMP!! It blew out of the bed of our pickup while driving down the highway at 70 mph! It took a quarter of a mile to get stopped and I walked back expecting to pick up only a few recognizable pieces. TO MY PLEASANT SURPRISE, the Pet Gear Travel Lite Tri-Fold Pet Ramp was fully intact and usable. The only damage was on a corner and an edge that had some scuffing from sliding along the pavement. It was missed by several cars and trucks as I walked back to get it which was also nice. I do not know if it would survive being hit by a large truck but it certainly passed the test of hitting the ground at 70 mph and sliding to a stop. I would recommend this Pet Gear Travel Lite Tri-Fold Pet Ramp to anyone looking for a ramp that is easy to fold up for traveling as well as being very durable. My recommendation is a Yes, BUT! This product might work well for dogs smaller than mine. It does meet one of my criteria. It is lightweight and portable and thus easy to use. However, it has not worked well for my 100 pound Bernese Mountain dogs. It does not have a lip on the sides, so the dogs walk off of it. Also, the sand paper type coating for traction doesn't really hold their feet very well. I have big claw gashes in it from one use where the dog did not feel it had a secure footing. A carpet base would be better. In short, I will either have to retrofit this, or get a different one. I can't use it as is.kcc

This is great- love how it could be a ramp or stairs. It could be a little higher with the ramp side, however the stairs work good for now with my little dog. I think the ramp is great if they have hip issues just like I said could be a little higher like the stairs are. The only thing I any not impressed with is that it only comes with one set of the sticky nonslip pads and they aren’t al that great at sticking to the bottom of the sides if you move it because of picking it up to clean the area underneath it- they call off. I wish this product would’ve came with either extra sets of those sticky nonslip stickers, or were already glued on to them legs and sides that would slide on the floor- better yet if they legs and sides were built with a nonslip think on them. Other then that love the stairs/ramp it’s very easy and doesn’t need anything assembling.Dani

These steps are not worth the price of free. They are incredibly cheaply made of thick cardboard, not even wood. The corner was broken off out of box, the legs do not clip on, it chips easily so when you pick it up they fall out. The "group" pads fall apart when you peel them off the adhesive, and so not stay in place. I will be returning it and would never buy it again.BB&B Customer

We bought these stairs to help our senior dogs. Our oldest is 13 pounds and 13 years old . Our youngest is 85 pounds and 7 years old. Our bed is high and the smallest dog wanted on and off the bed constantly. He is now able to get on and off by himself. The bigger dog use to leap onto the bed no problem. She is showing signs of struggle so we invested in these stairs! The stairs do flip to the other side as a ramp. But, I do not like the ramp as it is too steep! Both of the dogs refuse to use it! They will however use the stairs with no problems. I do recommend this product if using as stairs!!Yanna B

We were excited to receive this ramp because we have a corgi and try to prevent her from jumping on and off furniture as much as possible. Unfortunately, the box arrived damaged, and the ramp’s legs are wooden, so there is a 12+ inch crack down one of the sides. It’s also awkwardly long for our bedroom and living room, so would recommend measuring your space when deciding between a ramp or stairs. On the plus side, it has a nice non-slip carpet over the surface, and the bottom of the ramp has 2 non-slip grips. It also folds up easily and has lots of possible heights to set it to, so it’s versatile in that regard!Natalie&Scout

This is a great solution for a 20-lb. Senior dog (who recently had some knee and leg issues) to have some autonomy with getting up and down his favorite living room sofa. This was a very disappointing purchase. As soon as it arrived on my front stoop I could tell that this unit had already been purchased, poorly repackaged, and resold without anyone ever bothering to fix the poor repackaging. Initially upon unboxing the item everything looked ok. Upon further review I found a huge crack in one main sidewall of the ramp at what would be the top of the ramp if it were in a raised position. It was then that I noticed that the ramp was made of plastic. Maybe I should have seen that in the specifications before buying. My guess is that a human genius walked on the ramp and broke it. I thing the weight rating is like 90lbs but don't quote me on that. Definitely not made for a human to walk on.surneb

I bought this for my 8 yr old rescue pitbull that had ACL surgery. I have stairs leading outside of my house & I didn’t want him to use them. The ramp was simple to set up & my dog took to it quickly. I also have a pig who eventually will get too big to lift into my car so this ramp will b used for her. She enjoys it. Pros- it is very stable and solid so there isn’t a lot of movement when my 65 lb pit mix goes up and down. It is covered with a thick AstroTurf- like material so she gets traction on the way up and down without scraping her feet like the sandpaper material that other ramps have. Cons- it is sturdy and stable, so it is also heavy. Not too heavy to carry, but it’s awkward. You need plenty of clearance behind your car when you park to make sure there is room for the ramp. If you can’t manage an awkward 17 lbs, this isn’t the ramp for you.MatildaJanesmom

Very nice ramp, sturdy and easy to set up. We used it to get our large white shepherd into our travel trailer. It could be wider as it took two of us to get her up and down the ramp. All in all it worked to get her in and out of the camperSLBL
