Best Dog Oral Care (Jan 2023 Update)

Unfortunately this gave my dog really bad diarrhea and discomfort. I wasn't sure if this was what caused the diarrhea initially so I took her off this for a couple days and added it back into her water after she recovered, she proceeded to have diarrhea again the next day. Possibly different effects for different breeds. Coco is a Toy Poodle of 4kg for reference but i would not recommend this product either way.Ariel

I read before I bought this product, that some dogs don\'t like the water after you add this. So at first, my dog drank the water but then she stopped. She would come up, smell it and walk away. After a while, I switched to fresh water, without this product, and she drank so much so she was definitely thirsty but unwilling to drink. I can say that after using this for 2 days, her breath did smell good! So the product works! But she\'s not drinking it so I have a full bottle sitting in my pantry – maybe we\'ll try again when she\'s older.Gogo the Beagle

Can't say this will eliminate all bad breath, but will help between brushes and use of dental treats! This is my second bottle, and has helped reduce bad breath in our pitty. She doesn't mind the taste, and has not had any adverse issues with this addition. Recommend adding into water, not adding it first to the bowl due to it making a lot of bubbles. My dog sleeps with his mouth open like he has 3 jobs, but because of this additive to his water, his morning breath hasn't been too bad. When I first received the Dentastix, my dog could smell them through the bag. She was all over me trying to get to the bag. I gave her one of the stix and she devoured it. It sure does help with her bad breath. These treats are permanently on our weekly shopping list. I haven't found these one's at my local store so I have to buy an alternate from the same manufacturer. It's a treat for my dog and they clean her teeth on a daily basis. I love these because they are multipurpose! They help keep my dogs' teeth clean all the while keep my dogs happy by giving them something to chew on. If you have ever had a dog with bad breath you know how important it is to try and avoid that fiasco at all costs! Not only for your sniffer, but also for the dogs health! My dogs love these! As happens, especially as your dog gets older, our dog (a 70lb 5-year-old lab shepherd mix) gets some stinky breath sometimes. We tried these, in original and mint-flavored, and they really do help to make their breath better! My in-laws are big fans of greenies but their dogs (2 yellow labs) breath still always smells bad even though greenness are supposed to be the best you can buy. These dentastix work better than greenies and are a third the cost! Our dog loves them and even gets grouchy if we forget! Obviously, these are not a replacement for actual dental care but for in-between visits they work amazing! The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because these seem to mainly mask the smell and don't really "treat" the bad breath as a different brand we use does.shelby.h

If you want to jeopardize your dog having seizures and kidney failure then use this product. Our 15 year old Dachshund drank this for a month and starting having seizures, muscle weakness, not eating, and the beginning stages of kidney failure. As soon as we took him off this water and gave him fresh water he has made a 100% turn around. Do not use this product! We almost lost our baby! Yes, I have proof. She’s a beagle / shitzu / pug mix, so she is already genetically doomed in the tooth area anyway, so I’ve always been concerned with her dental health and worried about it leading to other health issues. When I saw this, I was skeptical she wouldn’t notice it in her water. With that beagle nose, she sniffs out even the best tricks I try to pull, but she hasn’t noticed it yet, and the vet recently commented on how amazing we are doing with her teeth. I told her it is simply a matter of adding a cap full of the solution to her water every morning (I keep it by the sink since the bottle is small enough and doesn’t stick out, so I don’t forget.) and trust it is doing its thing. She told us to keep doing what we are doing and said she would check it out. It made me feel great that we were doing something so simple, and inexpensive in the grand scheme of everything else we do to keep her healthy, that was working so well for her.Christina R.

If you search other reviews across the internet, you get insane reports about this potentially causing seizures /epileptic episodes, wasting away, eye problems, all kinds of crazy stuff. However, it also does have a fair amount of people preaching that it's legit. The potential side effects are SEVERE, and it doesn't seem like the brand has done much to mitigate those cases or fears?? Knowing all that, I chose to use this for my cat with extreme caution. He gets stinky breath from whenever he eats fish based products (extreme common for cats) but the reason why I'm willing to take any of those risks is because it honestly reminds me of Accutane. I've never had to use Accutane myself, but I know that 1) It's a last resort 2) It is practically guaranteed to work 3) Side effects range from IBS to infertility /severe birth defects. So… my cat's halitosis isn't that severe to illicit the full dose. I use roughly half to a third of the recommended amount in his water fountain (which I highly recommend getting if you don't have one). So at a very low dose, his bad breath has indeed been kept at bay and I monitor his status very closely. This product works, I just strongly recommend using the lowest effective dose (just like with any human medication) and if your pet's breath is so dang stanky you feel like they need the full dose, I highly recommend exhausting all your other options first / supplementing with proper hand toothbrushing / diet changes. We got this on Amazon for my two schnauzers and I brush their teeth with this every night. The toothbrush provided is meant for medium size dogs and for the back teeth. I use my finger and a little toothpaste for the front teeth as it’s harder to use the brush there. If you can get your dog to keep its mouth open long enough, you will see that you can actually brush out gunk! Highly recommendjanet.w

Gel is fine but the toothbrush is made in China. How much would it really cost to make a toothbrush in America. Haven't we learned not to source products from China for our pets? Three months ago, after spending a small fortune getting both of my dogs teeth professionally cleaned, I am determined to stay on top of their dental hygiene everyday. My dogs, are prone to get gum disease if I don't take care of them. I thought chewing on bones and the such would help keep the teeth clean, but that's just not enough. My dog loves these, she puts her paw out to choose between treats and has been going for this one all the time. She chews on them until every bit is completely gone. The reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because they are very strong smelling and the packaging they come in has a little sticky tab that's meant to keep them shut but it doesn't work very well compared to some products on the market that have a snap shut bag which I think would be alot better to keep them fresh. My dog has experienced bad breath for years due to an infected set of molars that had to be surgically removed. After the removal, his breath was still smelly. Have purchased this in the past and probably will again! There's nothing flashy about them, but my dog certainly likes them. She suffers from allergies and these do not cause any flares. The package is well presented although the resealing tape could be improved. It tends to not last as much as the dental treats. No biggie if you have a food bag Clip. Bought this for Marnie and she got a little taste and was sneezing and walked away. She is 3 yrs old and has some bad breath for such a little dog, she refused both brushes and and we could not get either to get near her. The product smells nice and may work for large dogs or our dog may just be scared of everything but i was able to get a small amount on my finger and in her mouth , gum area before she ran off sneezing. My sweetheart Pitt bull has dental problems that absolutely require regular brushing. I’ll admit I was skeptical that my Molly would let me brush her teeth, she doesn’t mind at all! We have been using this for about a month now and she settled right into the new retune. I got the mint flavored toothpaste but it also comes in more pup friendly flavors such as peanut better! Well this is certainly a new experience for me and the dog! For over 2 weeks now, I have just been using the mint toothpaste which is incredibly minty and not sure the dog likes it, however I have been getting her used to having something in her mouth (other than food) and use my finger with some of the paste on it. The finger brush which slips over your finger is cumbersome and awkward to use. The rubber end which cleans the teeth is small and quite neat but the rest of it is too unwieldy to comfortably slide in a mouth which is a bit reluctant to open. The toothbrush seems OK, but haven't really given it a good test yet. The instructions on the pack are not very informative about how much toothpaste you actually need to use per session and also if I am doing it correctly. Currently am just using the toothpaste on my finger, but I think will try another flavour and probably an easier finger brush if such a thing exists.Claire P

We have used Nylabone toothpaste and finger brush for our dogs for a few years now. We brush their teeth every couple of weeks when they get a bath. Obviously I haven’t tried to toothpaste for myself and my dogs hate having their teeth brushed, but the vet always says their teeth look healthy so I’m assuming it works!dakota.m

I cannot stress how important dental health is for your dog! Just as important as it is for us!Some may think I'm crazy for brushing my dog's teeth but our family has lost a dog to health issues directly related to bad dental hygiene because people certainly weren't brushing their dog's teeth in the 90's.I'll admit I'm not great at making time for it every day but I try to brush them with Nylabone's dog toothbrush and toothpaste. My Morkie doesn't exactly love it but it absolutely helps with her BAD breath! We LOVE this food. My vet specifically has always been a hater on "oral health" products. I ask him every time I go and he insists they are a gimmick. He always says, "Think about it. If someone said you could eat cookies instead of brushing your teeth, do you think it would work? It doesn't do anything". I have tried all the different water additives and teeth cleaning treats and this is the first time I have ever noticed a difference. My smaller dog has historically high plaque and stinky breath. We brush his teeth all the time and have had them done professionally under anesthesia twice and he just has always had a lot of plaque build up. After switching to this food, his breath doesn't smell like a dead fish anymore! It's been a notable improvement. I still can't believe it actually works. I will say that the individual pieces of kibble are rather large, which is what I think turns people off, but it's the chewing/breakdown part of it that actually cleans their teeth somehow. I was not convinced a dry dog food would be able to clean my dachshund's teeth, which are notorious for getting brown quickly, but was willing to try after many years of unsuccessful attempts to "brush" their teeth with a canine toothbrush. SD Oral care dog food is amazing! Jack and Queenie's teeth haven't been this white and shiny since they were pups!! Because of the large size of the kibbles, I mix the Oral care with their SD small bites and not only does this cause excitement for them having two different kibble types in their bowls but they also like to pick out the oral care kibbles and eat them first – many times trying to steal the Oral care kibbles form each other's bowls! My veterinarian introduced me to these Hills dental bites to help maintain my dogs teeth against tartar and plaque build up and to keep her teeth and gums healthy and they actually have made a difference. Every checkup has been a success. I purchase my Hills products at my vets office. I mixed them in with her regular dog food which is the Hills small bites. This brand is great!!cheryl.k

My sweet German Shorthaired Pointer had a cancerous (Osteosarcoma) tumor in her mouth. We had it removed and the UW-Dental Clinic highly recommended that we start feeding her the Hill's Prescription Diet t/d Dental Care Chicken formula. They explained that the larger chunks break in a specific and purposeful way so as to cleanse the teeth as the dog crunches down on them. It will help keep her teeth clean, in addition to us brushing her teeth daily. Our GSP absolutely LOVES them! We started using them as treats to see if she liked them. Now we mix it with her regular Hill's Science Diet food everyday. She literally picks out and eats the Dental chunks first before she eats the rest of her food. This product in theory is quality, however my Greyhound is not so keen on eating it, but will when mood strikes. I'm not 100% convinced that it actually makes a diffetence in the real world..Brushing his teeth is the best treatment, and financially cheaper, but the 2 minutes it takes always seems to be hard to find….sorry puppy. We have a standard size Goldendoodle at about 70lbs. We had been using Greenie's dental for a while until we discovered Kirkland ones. These look similar but are slightly smaller when comparing the large ones. But these cost fraction of what Greenie costs. We have gone thru couple of these boxes and it seems to be doing a pretty good job on his teeth. And he absolutely loves it. It has bot caused any upset stomach either. My mini poodle loves these bones! In fact, he can’t go to bed without one! They are perfect for small dogs and last FOREVER! Although, they are quick to chew the inside part out! Even when it’s gone, he still chews on it for months! A 2 pack will last 6 months are longer. My poodle literally has to have one every night! He sleeps with us, and has to select the one he’s in the mood for. Lol. My shih-tzu kind of chews on them. He likes them a lot, but prefers stuffed toys. Chew 'n Clean – Hartz® Chew ‘n Clean® Dental Duo™ Extra Small treats are supposed to be good for keeping dog's teeth clean from tartar and to exercise their gums. This size is for dogs under ten pounds. My older dog didn't have any interest in it whatsoever but the two puppies I just got played and chewed on it once in awhile. The chew is a treat and toy in one, These are made for dogs that aren't heavy chewers. My concerns with these Chew 'n Clean Dental Duo chew toys are the plastic can be chewed off and ingested, since it smells like the treat inside the dog will think it is food. I also don't like the idea that these are made in China, a country with recalls on various products already. I am also hesitant about the ingredients these are made from, such as corn, rice and potato starch, artificial bacon flavor, a preservative, and artificial yellow coloring. I don't think I would purchase these in the future for the above reasons, there are better options available.soccerkidsmom

Female Goldendoodle was tearing this up within minutes. Evidently she is a heavy chewer. The label says for mild to moderate chewers. I felt badly taking it away from her because she was having a great time with it. So had I known the strength of her jaws, I wouldn't have bought it. My vet was concerned about my dog's teeth and wanted to schedule an expensive cleaning. I decided to try this first. The dog's mouth odor was gone in just 2 days! It's been a week and her teeth are already whitening. Being frugal, she is only 25 lbs so I decided to use 1/2 the recommended amount and we got the same results promised, so now I can make it last longer. The powder is easy to measure out and sprinkle on the food. I have three Jack Russell Terriers ranging in age from three to 16 years. We have only used the powder for about three weeks so I cannot tell if there is a marked difference in the color of the teeth but their breath seems to be better. I ordered this product because one of my cats has dental issues. I did not pay attention to soy as the first ingredient, because is is listed as NON-GMO (I supposed it was safe, but it wasn't.) Veterinarian did not recommend the product because soy protein is an endocrine disruptor, also blocks the enzymes necessary to digest protein, and triggers allergies. I contacted the manufacturer via email with some questions, but they never replied to my email.AZ

I purchased these in my ongoing quest to find a breath treat my ten pound terror would and could eat, to help her breath. She has multiple allergies. Additionally, I am a very picky pet mom. She eats primarily human grade, limited ingredient foods only. Most breath treats are garbage, carb loaded junk. These are well above average, hold none of her food allergies…which are all the cheaper fillers, and she will eat them! She does have a harder time with hard treats as well, after having ten teeth removed, despite regularly brushing her teeth on top of quality food and breath treats. I was told that's a small dog thing and we all have to deal with it. I hope regular brushing and these treats, which are soft enough for her little mouth, yet good enough for me to be willing to purchase for her, will help keep her remaining teeth intact.VancK

I happened upon these dental stick while on vacation. My dog is not picky so there was no reason not to patronize a small pet shop. I am glad to find them available here and will buy again. This will be a very honest review. Every since my dog was spade, he stopped licking his privates and now literally licks everything else lol. He licks on his front paws when he is relaxing, if anyone is holding him he will "lick your arm or hand off"(sarcasm 😄), or he will also lay and lick on the carpet smh lol. These are great 😃 to have your pet 🐶 because they truly help freshen your dog's breath in a semi natural way. And we only use VetIQ maximum strength hip and Joint chews, because she is a small dog we kept her a half one every other day so a 90 count last us for half a year if not longer if she's really having trouble with Movement we will give her a whole one every other day. We order Ours from Amazon and they've always come fresh and she tolerates it well she loves the flavor looks forward to her treats. And we only give her Frontline Flea and Tick drops which she tolerates very well. She takes this maximum strength hip and joint treat for movement. Since giving her this she's like a puppy again she may need help getting up on the couch sometimes but for the most part she can get up the stairs like a puppy and the heartworm medicine she does well with is called Inceptor you can get from a vet. And the ONLY TREATS SHE LIKES PERIOD IS DENTALLIFE BY PURINA THE SPONGY ONES.. If your on the fence, I would recommend trying these treats for a finicky eater and I order them from Amazon I get small/medium for a great price and they ship them on auto-ship, Especially if your dog has allergies and or skin issues like my dog has! I wouldn't recommend any other dog treats because I've tried them and there's a lot of them out there!
