A month ago we almost got T-boned by a driver who ran a stop sign. One of my 80-pound dogs went flying into the front seat. She was okay but it could have been devastating & it was a blessing that she wasn't injured. I decided not to test fate any more & to get some kind of barrier. The first one I tried was not strong enough. Kind of a sturdy nylon canvas thing with pockets that I thought might make a sort of sling, but it sat too low between the seats & I knew it wouldn't be tall enough or strong enough to restrain her. So I found the Zoo Keeper barrier & I have to say, it's really nice. It fits my Honda Civic hatchback just fine. The way it hangs off the headrests is great. It doesn't have to rest on the floor or on the folded-down back seats. The strength & sturdiness is kind of double-edged. There's absolutely no way my dog would get past this thing were I to slam on the brakes, but at the same time if she went flying against the bars it wouldn't feel great because those bars are hard. So I went to the hardware store & got some black 5/8-inch-thick foam pipe wrap for 1/2-inch pipe (basically a pool noodle that is split along one side) & cut it into sections so that each bar & bar section was covered. This cost around 5 bucks to do & now it's nice & cushy & wouldn't hurt an80-pound dog who crashed into it. I'm really happy with the whole project. I'm not worried about the dogs hurting themselves if anything makes them crash into it. In the pix the top two levels on the right & left sides didn't have to be taped – I slipped the foam noodle over the U-shaped bar attachments before attaching them to the main restraint. The rest of the pieces of foam had to be split first, so I taped them shut with black electrical tape. Clear packing tape works too. Now I really love this thing.deenibeeni49

I have a 2019 niro PHEV, essentially a hatchback car, and i was able to install it exactly like the one in the product photo. It's easy to install yourself but a second person helps with holding it in place. I was able to fit this directly between the rear seats and my cargo cover bracket. The bracket essentially further reinforces this barrier to stay put. When you look in your rear view mirror, you can easily see through the black mesh. The darn thing kept getting stuck, the retraction is way to fast and there are too many little facets that need to be moved in order to open and close the gate. It was not smooth. I did get the job done, blocked the portion of the hallway, however my pup was too small and slipped right underneath no problem.
This gate is wider than most and enabled me to close a strange corner-to-corner space where the hallway, entry way and living room meet. Huge plus for that! The problem with this gate is what another reviewer stated: my dog can slip underneath it. For reference, my pup is a 3 month old mini golden doodle and is maybe 10 lbs. It looks like she is too big to squeeze under it, but her puffy fur collapses as she wriggles her way under it. So, until she is too big to do that, I put an adjustable handle that wedges into a corner on one side and has a loop that slips around the mount on the other. Problem solved. We bought this product in-store at our local PetCo, and we were so hopeful this would be the product that we have been searching for to make car rides safer for us and our medium/large breed pup. While it may fit "most" vehicles, we were the unlucky ones. It does not fit a 2019 Nissan Rogue SV or a 2020 Toyota Tacoma. The way our car and truck roofs are shaped into a curve does not allow the cups on the top side of the tension rods to touch the vehicle roofs, so this barrier is impossible to use without some serious rigging, and for this much money, I want something that works on its own. It also was fairly frustrating to put together, because the bars don't line up quite right (you have to kind of force them to bend in order to reach the designated holes) and you could tell ours came from mass production because the holes were still filled with chunks of plastic that we had to take a leatherman tool and whittle out before we could even attempt to put it together. I wish this had worked for us because the bars have a little bit of weight to them so I think it has the potential to be sturdy! We are returning today for a refund.Amanda626

Bought this for wife's Toyota highlander with capt mid row seats and third row. With the third row folded flat the barrier is to tall and had to be moved to the floor behind the second row, which left a large gap at the bottom of the barrier. The position also left little clearance to the seat, consequently eventide my children reclined the seat it would knock the barrier over. A bit pricy but I believe it's worth it. Gives my dogs the entire cargo area to spread out in instead of the confinement of a crate which has limited height and width depending on your SUV. The unit went together pretty easily and is well designed. The only thing I would like to see improved is the size of the doors entering the cargo area, I know it's universal so they tried to come to a happy medium to accommodate both smaller and larger SUV vehicles,I would like to see an option fora wider entrance and maybe smaller side pieces making it easier to get the dogs in and out when a divider is being used. This is the only liftgate barrier option I could find in the US right now andithink it works as advertised.Robert b.

Works great! Keeps my dogs in the back of my car without fighting with them to stay back there. Doesn’t fall down and fits nicely. However some of the pieces didn’t click together like they are supposed to so I am worried about my puppy messing with it and it coming undone while I’m drivingRenee

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and effectiveness of this gate. I have a smaller German Shepherd and it works perfectly to keep her out of this one area in my back yard that I don't want her to go into. Yes, outside!
