Putting this together – I would say that the plastic is a good construction, the clasps and screws are great, and the metal bars for the windows look to be a decent quality. They ship you extra clips and screws in case you have a problem. I personally don't like the wheels (on any crate), so I'll leave those off and the pet bowl might be okay if I was sending the dog via airplane. The Large size isn't very large in my opinion. A dog should be able to stand up, turn around and lay down. I think this crate is more like a 50 pound max than 75. My 10 week old Golden Female Retriever will likely outgrow this kennel in 6 months and be in that weight range. In a way I'd like to exchange it for a bigger one.RichH

The cover was just as I expected. Light weight, durable and easy to care for. The oy recommendation I can .American is to add velcro/hook&loop fasteners to keep the top of the cover in place. This would prevent the occupant from chewing and keep the cover in place. The for is drab but it gives the crate a dark den appearance so the occupationt is calm and content. I have found over the years that animals naturally respond favorably to a darkened environment. They are more relaxed and calm. Babies in a crate with natural, artificial, even greatly reduced lighting remain alert, peering into the darkness. They often whine, whimper, or bark, but cover the crate and within minutes, they unwind and are off to sleep. For this reason, I have put dark cloth or a blanket over my crates. flying my 2 kitties cargo was an ordeal that i absolutely DO NOT EVER want to go through again.(im sure it wasnt even that bad for them, but it was terrible for me!) ultimately though, it had to be done. ive never shipped/flown a pet before so this all began with a search for a crate. petmate skykennel was the obvious choice. even though they're cats, my boys are big fellas. i went with the medium size so they'd have extra room. the crates were exactly what i needed. only thing i will say is, i did order an extra set of all-metal bolts/fasteners (from amazon); the ones that come with the crates are ok, but the overruling word on pet cargo travel seems to be all-metal is required. maybe its just required for international flights? either way i ordered a set. glad i bought ONLY that from amazon, though!i was about to buy the crates from there too, then i thought hmmm maybe someplace else had them at a better price…and yep… "someplace else" sure did! I did a lot of research before we decided to by the extra large Petmate dog crate. We currently have the "Giant" dog crate in a bedroom for our mixed malamute–but we have to disassemble it to take it out of the room. We need the dog crate for when we take our dog camping. The last time we took him camping, on the last day, we left him in our cabin for a few hours. When we came back, he had tore the curtain and blinds apart on two different windows. We spent hours trying to get new blinds and I had to sew the curtains. So, this crate in mandatory if our dog is going camping again! We currently have a fifth wheel trailer that we camp in. Also, the metal dog crates–our dog can get right out of them using his body!Diane
While certainly not inexpensive, it far outprices the alternative for a crate that meets all the requirements for airline travel for my German Shepherd. Years ago I also used to travel with my Dalmatian and I used the Petmate Sky Kennel then. Both dogs felt comfortable in the kennel at home and so having to step into it to be loaded on a plane was not a struggle. The only negative is the food/water tray. It's for a rabbit, not a 90 pound German Shepherd, but that's any easy fix for me, but the manufacturer should reconsider.

I got this for a ~60lbs. labrador retriever and he seems to love it. Big enough on the inside for him to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably. It's sturdy, but not so heavy that it doesn't move around a little bit when he changes positions. It was easy enough to put together. A couple of the plastic screws didn't seem to have the ends filed off all the way (hard to describe but basically instead of a flat end, the plastic stuck out a little extra on one side instead of being flat across), which made them harder to fit straight through the holes in assembly. Fortunately, they send a few extra, so I had enough that were straight enough to put the crate together. Also, just be aware of the plastic bottom – I ran my hand across the bottom to clean it before putting it together and scraped my hand on a piece of plastic that stuck up a little (it was like a little ring manufacturing imprint). I filed it down before letting my dog in so he wouldn't get scraped on it, but just something to be on the look out for.Labbadabbadoo
The sizing recommendation by the manufacturer seems to be off. Dimensions are not the actual dimensions if you were to take a measuring tape and measure yourself. For my 55 lb border collie mix who sits at 27 inches tall and stands at 37 inches long from nose to base of tail a large would not fit. I ordered the XX Large and that is a way better fit where she can actually sit without being hunched over. This was purchased for air travel as well so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The material seems relatively durable but it did arrive with a large crack so I will be exchanging. Compared to the Petmate Sky Kennel, this kennel seemed a little bit thinner in material and not as study. However, I order a Sky Kennel in a size Large so perhaps a sizing difference might have affected this. Also, currently, the Sky Kennel is available for a better price on Amazon but not in the size I am looking for.Zozobozo

When a puppy, accidents do happen. It is easy to clean. Uma is about 20lbs now and can stand up in the kennel. Still plenty of height room. She may become 30-40lbs and this kennel will be all we need. Our use is for nighttime and when we go out. We have the gray which does not stand out. It is a neutral color and looks good in your kitchen, bedroom or where you keep your dog. The kennel also provides a rectangular cage on both sides on the top half so the dog can look out. I did some research on the Variocage dog crate. I recall they crash tested it for all 3 types of crashes. It showed several of the straps breaking, and I thought that was a bad sign. But according to info from a video posted below, the straps are only designed to keep the crate oriented in the rear of your car prior to the collision, after that the straps can break, but the crate is designed to protect effectively. The angled part of the crate abutting the rear seat disperses the force of a rear end collision over the largest surface as opposed to a square regular crate which contacts the rear seat at the point of its corner. The corners of the crate where the dog doors are (I bought a 2 dog medium crate) are blunted- that is to conform to the crumple zone of the back of your car in case of rollover- thus creating its own crumple zone. Lastly the telescoping bars allow force to be absorbed, but still protect your dog inside. The Swedish designers have outdone themselves, The cost is around $1,100 but you get what you invest in. If your goal is to get one of the safest crates for your dog, Variocrate ranks among the top 3 in my research. I picked it over the other choices because it fit into the rear of my vehicle the best. I had very good assistance before purchasing regarding size — of my dogs and of my car–and ended up with a Large Double for two English Labradors. It's a good size for them and fits just perfectly in my Subaru Outback. I found the assembly not too difficult (the video on the website helps to supplement the paper instruction sheet). The dogs have plenty of room but the space is smaller than what they are used to, so I left it set up in the house for several days so they could practice going in and out. They both seem very comfortable riding in it, and I LOVE having them safely contained — especially when they are wet (and/or muddy) from swimming. I like the Variocage products. I have the Variogate and divider In our other car. However, positioning some components to get proper bolt alignments was very challenging on this assembly. One side flange of the rear lower panel was so far out of alignment that it had to be bent to fit. Other components required clamps to achieve alignment for bolts. If I had time to wait for replacement parts, I know that they would have been gladly provided. Since I was so far along with assembly, I decided to soldier on. My GSD pup is crate trained. I purchased my first PetMate plastic crate in 2004 and never had an issue. When my GSD got too big for his wire kennel, I upgraded the size and got a PetMate Ultra (for its airline approved status). For three solid nights and any day time crate use highly distressed my dog. No one in the house slept. He was quite agitated (barking, clawing at the crate bottom, etc). He could not sleep or lay down in the crate. On the fourth night, I put him in the crate with the same result. Ten minutes later, I took out the old 2004 crate (flat bottom, no injection mold markers) and popped him in it. He sat down and gave the biggest sigh. I finally understood he had been in distress because of the new crate. On inspection, I discovered these round things under the bottom, pressed into them with my forearms and immediately felt the pressure points/pain. Who thought this design was a good idea? Did PetMate even try it? I beg designers to sit in it, lie down in it, press their forearms on to these circle things. Question your motives. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a cheap excuse and terrible quality. I’ll be cross-posting this comment on multiple pet store sites. I’m so unimpressed with this design. The incredible distress my dog endured because of shoddy design is unacceptable. PetMate needs to do better for the pets you aim to help. PetMax shouldn’t sell this product; they should ensure the pets they serve do not experience stress or injury.Ginn
The plastic has gotten more brittle than it used to be. Already has stress marks on corners and not even used. The sky kennels I have from 20 years ago are still functioning. This crate is very light weight and great for travel. It pops up quickly and though a little tricky to compress again, is easy to put away. Larger dogs may be able to roll this crate around. It is utilized in our camper for our 90 pound chocolate lab. She fits well enough to lay down and it was not wrecked the first few uses, but she is crate trained. I do however believe the bottom material could've used some more reinforcement as a dog that size wont take much to make an accidental rip. This crate tucks in nicely by the bed. I had to twist the crate to get it to fit, but since it is soft sided, it was easy to do. I have 2 long haired miniature dachshunds, and they both have plenty of room and are really happy to have their blankets and sleeping space. The crate is well made and is perfect for my needs. I looked at a number of options and could not find another crate as narrow as this one. The metal door is easy to close and I was able to flip it so the door opened the direction I needed. The only negative is with the limited space, the opening radius of the door is fairly limited. Both my dogs can easily fit, but depending on the space in your unit, a larger dog might have troubles fitting through the door. (Again, this limitation is based on the narrow width I have available in my unit.) So happy with the purchase-perfect for the trailer. The dogs give it 4 paws up.Dog L.

This is such a wonderful product, that really makes our travel so much easier. It is made extremely well; sturdy but still light enough to carry anywhere. It assembles easily and quickly. It, thoughtfully, has areas that our dogs can see us at all times, and we can see our dogs, too. Ventilation is excellent; it allows for enjoying the outdoors, while still being safely contained and protected. The mat adds softness and support. We use this when we visit family and friends too. Our dogs are very good, and do not need to be crated. However, they like a place of their own to feel safe, especially when we travel. I got this more to take our cats back and forth to the vet that dogs. It is larger than I expected, with plenty of room for them to move around. I love that is folds down for easy storage. I also like the zippered openings at the top and the side. It is easier to get the cat in from the top. The crate is very sturdy and I like the larger handles. I also like the pocket on the side, with plenty of space for a leash or treats. The bottom of the crate has feet, so it reduces wear on the fabric. The mat is easy to remove for cleaning.kschapman
I got this product for a cat carrier to go to vet appointments. First impression, definitely worth the price tag and super sturdy! We opened it and let both our cats explore and get comfortable in it. They fell in love and currently it’s still in my living room with two flaps up secured with the velcro. They have been fighting over whose “house” it is so I didn’t have the heart it to take it down since one compromised using the top net opening as a hammock! The colors are nice and so far it’s held up great! For size reference my cats are 11 and 16 lbs and both fit comfortably in it for a car ride to their appts or traveling. We bought a larger crate 6 months ago that housed 3 small dogs and 2 cats for 3 days while we drove across country. For several months the 3 dogs shared it at night (the cats found another place to sleep). Recently, we decided to separate the 2 older dogs from the younger and bought 2 of the medium sized crates. The "travel crate" was folded and put away in the laundry room for the next time we travel with all our babies, and we stacked the 2 medium crates. Even stacked, these crates have good strength and a solid build. I can't say enough about how exceptional these crates are and the divider is great when needing to separate pets in a pinch.mslubner
I was so excited about the fantastic sales price on the crates! Ordered an i Crate in the large size, before I did the research. After research I realized I ordered the lowest-grade crate, not what I wanted. Tried to cancel the order to reorder the higher-grade Ultima Pro. After two calls, they did send a cancel through to see if it would work. (It didn't.) I didnt want to risk waiting and missing the sale so I ordered the Ultima Pro, had to be medium, because large was out of stock. Just opened it and, like others, got one that can't even be put together because it's so out of square. It can't even be bent into place it's so bad. This is one reason I HATE buying online. My dog loves her new crate. She out grew the first one we purchased . This one gives her all the room she needs to stretch out and sleep. We have tried many Kennels/Crates for our dog, she suffers from Anxiety and nothing has kept her as safe as this kennel. Any metal kennel, regardless of how indestructible it has advertised to be, we have come home to a scraped up bleeding dog that is out in the house and destroying things. She is a pitbull and she chews through anything. The kennels that are plastic with the metal grates on the side she chews on the door and breaks the metal on the sides and at this point has ruined her teeth. We have put her in the Ruff Land Performance kennel twice, once for two hours, great success and once for an entire day. She was calmer, and no blood or destruction to the crate. Wish I had seen this crate 9 years ago. Another feature we like is that it has a flat floor, rather than one that is either metal grating or has a few round circles protruding to allow stacking of kennels. We are amazed and so thankful to have this crate. I would recommend this crate to any dog owner. I can't say enough good about it.Diana B
We tried the reinforced wire crates with no success. If he could get out, he would. The next step was possibly getting those ultra reinforced crates that cost almost a thousand dollars and almost require financing. This has been the perfect compromise. It’s sturdy and durable. My chabrador (chow-labrador mix) has plenty of space to turn around and lay down in this kennel. He is kenneled while I'm working, and he easily goes to lay down when it's time for me to leave in the morning. At night and on the weekends, my rat terrier likes to claim this kennel as her own spot. Very sturdy and fairly light weight. The crate had obviously been used and returned. The metal was rusted in places and the plastic bottom tray was dirty. When I decided to return it, It was a challenge to get it back in the box. When I took it back to the store, I asked about a discount and received 15% off (the tax). I had previously bought one that was marked down by 50% because the box was damaged. I was quite disappointed in the whole experience. Apparently the merchandise was supposed to be checked if the box was damaged and that wasn’t done in this case.Janice

I use them when I travel with my dogs too. My dogs only use their crates for sleeping in at night or napping in during the day. During the day, their crate doors are left open. I close the dogs in at night. I don't have an issue with my dogs trying to escape from their crates, so I can't speak to whether or not this would be sturdy enough for a dog that's determined to get out of their crate. These crates are more than sturdy enough for my miniature Schnauzer, Havanese, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. All three of my dogs love their MidWest iCrates, as did my previous dog! They go in them voluntarily and when told to "crate up". My only concern with the current crate I ordered is that that one of the latches isn't lined up quite right so it's a bit tight when closing the crate door. I bent it slightly and it works much better. I haven't had that issue with any of the previous MidWest crates I've used. I'm a MidWest crate fan.Eddie09

He was a Parvo pup and barely survived, so rest and his own quiet space was highly recommended for recovery. We first used the divider which was great. However, as he grew, so did his strength. It definitely is not strong enough for large dogs. Even for short amounts of time. At the moment he is 6 months and 60 pounds. Thankfully he did not get out nor hurt himself! I almost did not purchase this crate due to the multiple bad reviews. Glqd I purchased it qnyway. Other than the people who recieved damaged or warped crates, I'm not sure why there are so many reviews claiming it is difficult to assemble. I'm 4'11", 90 lbs, had 3 kids under 5 in the same room, and I assembled it alone without any real difficulties. The aforementioned children are in one of the review photos to show the enormity of the crate. The 9 month old Great Dane is in the other photo. Luckily for me, besides a slightly warped top piece, none of my pieces were bent, warped, or broken. Took about 30-40 minutes to assemble. There are so many awful crates/kennels out there! From the craptastically-made ones that double as end tables to the ugly, wiry kind… This Richell kennel is most excellent. The 4 wheels make it easy to move from room to room (and you can lock the wheels, too), assembly is easy, and the top opening is the best feature of all that I never thought about needing. This is a very solid, thoughtfully-designed, carefully manufactured crate for small and medium dogs–though I can't speak to how it would hold up to an obsessive chewer. Beautiful and a roomy size for small or medium sized dogs. I've only had it for a while, but so far, very sturdy too. The tabs inside are great for pressing the edges of potty pads to keep them from scrunching up. The wheels are convenient, but unfortunately you can't lock all 4 and it slides on hard surfaces. The open doors are great also. I wish it had a slide out tray like the large black wire cages. It is hard to get yourself down and inside to wipe the floor of the kennel clean. This crate is great! I have a recent rescue that is not fully housebroken. I needed a crate that I could keep in my living area that looked good and didn't take up a lot of space to use when I leave the house for more than an hour! He loves it. There doesn't seem to be any "handles" for lifting for transport & I wouldn't recommend lifting the kennel w/the dog inside, but you could certainly put it in the car first & then pop your pup inside. This is a nice looking crate and it is substantial. It is also easy to move around. The main problem with it is that the clips to open and close the doors are annoyingly difficult. Also the side garage style door is difficult to operate as well. Sometimes I just leave the top open and take my little schnauzer out the top – it's easier.Joyce
Very hard to use. Clips and clamps are very poorly made. Aside from the fact that I've asked for refund and donated them, I did try to utilize them to no avial. I purchsed the large one and a small one. The garage door + top door feature is cool, but the locking mechanisms are very difficult to use. Terrible choice if you have arthritis! Its impossible to open the clips while holding the puppy in your other hand. 🙁 The cozy bed is the nicest part of this setup.Hard2Open
When I received this crate, I was very impressed with it, I have a rescue JRT who is an escape artist. I placed him in the crate feeling certain that he would be contained while I was at work. In the time that I was gone, he literally destroyed the crate, ripping it to shreds, tore the doors off, etc. I do believe that this crate would be adequate for a dog who isn't quite so zealous about getting out. It seems sturdy and would be safe for car travel. Just won't work for a dog who is intent upon getting out. I bought it because of the description of it being a "steel" crate, but it is more of just a heavy hard plastic. Do not trust it to contain a zealous dog who is intent upon escape.
