I called the company to complain about the fit the replacement had a 1/4in gap at least and they admitted there was a small gap from the original door and the replacement for our door frame. The frame is not that old either and in Florida that gap is enough for waste of air conditioning and to allow mosquitoes in which is a very bad problem. I will seek to return this replacement flap you would do better to make one yourself research on utube. We are seeking to replace the entire door and frame to a different brand that may have replacement doors available for years to come. Totally disappointed … I'm not sure what has changed in materials/production, but the new flaps only "closed" for maybe the 1st two weeks. After that, there is a huge gaping space on both sides that allows unwanted air to flow into my house. & it's not because of any extreme temperatures … we've stayed consistently mild. I like the pet door and it was easy to install. Unfortunately my 6 month old border collie decided to use the flags for a chew toy. It was not easy to find the insulates middle flap on the website but after a lot of frustration I got all three flaps ordered. It would be nice if there was an option to order them together. I had to fabricate the plastic pieces that sandwiched the flaps because the old ones were broken and the only one that came with the insulated flap was completely different. It actually took me longer to replace the flaps than it did to install the door originally. If I need to replace them again I will probably just order the complete door and replace it. I have had the same sliding door insert for well over 15 years and when I last ordered replacement flaps in 2018 I was warned that the door itself was being discontinued so that in the future, flaps might no longer be available. To my great relief, they are still stocked and were simple to order. Thank you for still caring for older customers. I looked long and hard to find a replacement flap for an older dog door. My aunt bought a house 8 years ago that a pretty decrepit dog door. The flap was in tatters or just missing chunks. The customer service representative worked extra hard to help me find this classic flap that is the closest fit currently on the market. To my family’s amazement it actually fit into the upper channel that holds the flap in place. The only problem is that it is about half an inch short. The flap is the correct length, but the protrusions that slide into the channel that secure it are half an inch lower than the original flap. We are using some heavy painters tape to make up the difference in length for now, but otherwise it fits great. With outside temperatures in the low twenties and teens the flap has been a blessing. That whole area around the pet door is much warmer and the cold breezes are gone.Carolyn S

We had previously bought and installed a medium sized through-wall door from Petco, and our Pugs loved it; but now we have a 4 month old Bull Mastiff puppy who is already 40lbs., and was almost struggling to get in and out of the medium sized door. The answer was simple: upgrade to a LARGE size door, and now our fuzzy kids go flying through it without even slowing down…even the Bull Mastiff. It's hilarious!! Had one of these for about ten years and bought a new one. One of our dogs damaged the old one by trying to run in when the panel was inserted to keep him out while a worker was in the house. This broke two of the screws away from the plastic frame. Even though it says aluminum pet door, the only aluminum part is the white door frame. The brown frame around it is plastic as is the wall tunnel. Since we now needed to replace the flaps, it costs just as much to get a whole new one as it did to replace the flaps. Now for the new one – Had it installed for less than a month and spring loaded knob on insert panel is broken (called for free replacement under one year warranty). Door panel flap lengths are adjustable, but don't seem as thick (and durable) as old ones. We purchased this for our large rough collie. It was simple to install in our steel door between our garage door and entry. He learned to use it almost immediately. It has a metal panel that will slide in from the top of the frame to lock the door. The flap itself is tinted, and we would have preferred a clear one (like a previous dog door we have installed from the garage out to the yard). The door itself was nice. Not too difficult to install but not as easy as some that I’ve done. My problem (and the reason for the 2 star review) is the “closing panel” which is not a panel but rather a cover. I assumed that this door cover would work like all other petsafe doors I’ve had which have been great. Because the description says “panel,” that further made me think it was a panel that you slide in like all doors I’ve seen. This is not the case. It’s a snap-on cover that is supposed to clip in on the sides. It comes with one cover that you can put on either the inside or the outside. You will either be able to keep things in or out but not both at the same time. The biggest problem is that depending on your door and placement, the panels in the door can make the alignment to clip it on nearly impossible (see picture). I don’t have any confidence in it so we always have to block the door with something pushed up against the cover. I have a degree in mechanical engineering, so it’s not a lack of intelligence that’s the problem. It’s a poor design for the cover.
Easy enough to install, but their use of nylon bolts is a downside. I understand it is so you can cut the excess away. But it probably wouldn't have cost any more (possibly a tiny bit more) to engineer the door to use metal hardware so it wouldn't strip as easily. The other issue I have is the "security" snap on door. Because it's snap on and not slid in or lockable, both my dogs have been able to push it off from the outside in. This was dribbling enough water into my utility room during storms that I had to disassemble it to figure out where it was leaking. I couldn't find exactly where it was letting water in, so once I got it reassembled, I caulked the heck out of it and it seems to be okay for now. Taking it apart and reinstalling it was a major hassle. Most of the nylon screws either broke or wouldn't fit all the way back through, after numerous attempts. Seems to be poorly engineered. And the door where it was leaking isn't even facing in the usual direction of the wind/rain, so I don't know why it leaked so badly.TS777

The outer mount potion is plastic and pretty thin at that, no support ribs or reinforcement around the mount holes; drove a screw right through the first one. Door panel flap lengths are adjustable, but don't seem as thick (and durable) as old ones. I am on my 3rd PetSafe door. I started with a smart door but I got tired of constantly changing batteries. I have 4 dogs. I got the double flap door. After about 1.5 years the plastic piece that holds the flaps started to break (little pieces at a time). There is no replacement part for this so I had to purchase a new door. PetSafe did give me a reduced price. Now, I have gorilla tape holding my one remaining flap on this door,since the same part is breaking once again. This is a great dog door for a medium size dog. It is a deluxe unit with dual flaps for maximum weather protection. It also has a slide-in closing door with a secure lock. It looks stylish and it fits (one of our main concerns) through the section of the house that has brick. We had a professional install the unit, unfortunately, it was a little higher on the outside than the dog would have liked (see picture above) which hindered her from going back into the door. I solved this problem by ordering something called the Ten-Eighty Mini Launch Ramp for about $30. It is designed for skate boards and bicycles but it will also work in this application. I needed a little modification to sit flush with the wall and I had it carpeted so the dog wouldn't slip in cold weather. Now the dog goes in and out of the door effortlessly. This is my second purchase of this door for my cat. Overall, a decent product. First one, the cover was rather loose, but worked. The second one, the cover was too tight, could NOT get it off, not even by prying all around the flap area and edges. Finally, in frustration, I called Petsafe to see if I'd done something wrong. Was told there have been some complaints, that I could try cutting it off and they are sending me a new cover. Needed a new storm / screen door and found a unit at Menards that included the PetSafe door flap. Installation was simple and training the dogs to let themselves in and out only took a few minutes. And for some reason kids liked crawling through it too. Do you make a conversion kit to upgrade to extreme whether door so the whole frame doesn't have to be replaced or a rigid door? If not, would you consider doing so.
