Totally disappointed … I'm not sure what has changed in materials/production, but the new flaps only "closed" for maybe the 1st two weeks. After that, there is a huge gaping space on both sides that allows unwanted air to flow into my house. & it's not because of any extreme temperatures … we've stayed consistently mild. So not sure what's up — but I wish you'd go back to the original way of making our pet flaps. I like the pet door and it was easy to install. Unfortunately my 6 month old border collie decided to use the flags for a chew toy. It was not easy to find the insulates middle flap on the website but after a lot of frustration I got all three flaps ordered. It would be nice if there was an option to order them together. I had to fabricate the plastic pieces that sandwiched the flaps because the old ones were broken and the only one that came with the insulated flap was completely different. It actually took me longer to replace the flaps than it did to install the door originally. If I need to replace them again I will probably just order the complete door and replace it. I called the company to complain about the fit the replacement had a 1/4in gap at least and they admitted there was a small gap from the original door and the replacement for our door frame. The frame is not that old either and in Florida that gap is enough for waste of air conditioning and to allow mosquitoes in which is a very bad problem. I will seek to return this replacement flap you would do better to make one yourself research on utube. We are seeking to replace the entire door and frame to a different brand that may have replacement doors available for years to come. Petsafe was not helpful at all and offered a discount on an entire new dog door to replace the original entire door and frame I was shocked — and a supervisor never called me back. I have had the same sliding door insert for well over 15 years and when I last ordered replacement flaps in 2018 I was warned that the door itself was being discontinued so that in the future, flaps might no longer be available. To my great relief, they are still stocked and were simple to order. Thank you for still caring for older customers. I looked long and hard to find a replacement flap for an older dog door. My aunt bought a house 8 years ago that a pretty decrepit dog door. The flap was in tatters or just missing chunks. The customer service representative worked extra hard to help me find this classic flap that is the closest fit currently on the market. To my family’s amazement it actually fit into the upper channel that holds the flap in place. The only problem is that it is about half an inch short. The flap is the correct length, but the protrusions that slide into the channel that secure it are half an inch lower than the original flap. We are using some heavy painters tape to make up the difference in length for now, but otherwise it fits great. With outside temperatures in the low twenties and teens the flap has been a blessing. That whole area around the pet door is much warmer and the cold breezes are gone.Carolyn S
Replacement for the pet door we had gotten used.Easily to replace. The only thing is if this is for a cat, the magnets are a bit on the strong side. Probably not an issue for dogs (we don't have any dogs). For cats, pushing through with their delicate faces and then dropping on their long tails on the way out is obviously not comfortable. The door itself was nice. Not too difficult to install but not as easy as some that I’ve done. My problem (and the reason for the 2 star review) is the “closing panel” which is not a panel but rather a cover. I assumed that this door cover would work like all other petsafe doors I’ve had which have been great. Because the description says “panel,” that further made me think it was a panel that you slide in like all doors I’ve seen. This is not the case. It’s a snap-on cover that is supposed to clip in on the sides. It comes with one cover that you can put on either the inside or the outside. You will either be able to keep things in or out but not both at the same time. The biggest problem is that depending on your door and placement, the panels in the door can make the alignment to clip it on nearly impossible (see picture). I don’t have any confidence in it so we always have to block the door with something pushed up against the cover. I have a degree in mechanical engineering, so it’s not a lack of intelligence that’s the problem. It’s a poor design for the cover.
Easy enough to install, but their use of nylon bolts is a downside. I understand it is so you can cut the excess away. But it probably wouldn't have cost any more (possibly a tiny bit more) to engineer the door to use metal hardware so it wouldn't strip as easily. The other issue I have is the "security" snap on door. Because it's snap on and not slid in or lockable, both my dogs have been able to push it off from the outside in. And the door is XL so it's big enough for a person to crawl through, so there is absolutely no security from a person entering standpoint. Other than that, the door works perfectly well for letting the dogs in and out independently, and keeping the heat/cool outside.Chefblue
This was dribbling enough water into my utility room during storms that I had to disassemble it to figure out where it was leaking. I couldn't find exactly where it was letting water in, so once I got it reassembled, I caulked the heck out of it and it seems to be okay for now. Taking it apart and reinstalling it was a major hassle. Most of the nylon screws either broke or wouldn't fit all the way back through, after numerous attempts. Seems to be poorly engineered. And the door where it was leaking isn't even facing in the usual direction of the wind/rain, so I don't know why it leaked so badly.TS777

The replacement door is light weight compared to the original door itself. So when we get heavy wind, the door gets blown open letting cold in. Besides that one aspect, the door fit perfect, locks on to the magnet great (wash old magnet connected to the frame) and all else is nice. I would reorder. I recently added a little screened in outdoor room for my cats and dogs to use for a little outdoor time. This pet door works perfectly. The dogs and the cats have no problems using it. We got this to install at my grandma’s house. She uses a walker and often has trouble getting up as frequently and quickly as the dog needs to go outside. this is perfect because it alleviates the problem for both of them. This is not a job for one person to install – assistance may be needed to line it up and some kind of sealant might be needed if the cut isn’t perfect. But overall, I recommend! This is a great door! My Frenchie figured it out, but she is a little hesitant because the magnets are so strong she doesn’t think they’ll open. She just has to put her bull head against it and she can get in and out very easily. My builder put it in and was pretty impressed with the whole thing. It was a fairly inexpensive solution to a tough problem when one has a dog but doesn’t want to ruin their house. Excellent opening size for our pet who is 18 lbs. I purchased the Medium opening. Our sliding door is a custom height of 12 FT, not a normal height, so using the extension included with the patio panel still doesn’t reach the top of the sliding door, which of course is not the problem of the manufacturer of this product. We remedied the problem by using and cutting to size a disposable hard foam cooler, fitted with a foam edge window and door sealer in order to eliminate cool and hot air from coming in and out. It’s not perfect, but works for our pet and for our use.Grace
I currently own 2 doggy door slider inserts from a competitor brand. I got this PetSafe insert to replace one of my inserts that is worn out, and I am so glad I did! At first glance you can see that the PetSafe is far superior to my competitor door. Upon quick exploration, I could feel that the PetSafe door was much better quality. The PetSafe door itself is more substantial and heavy duty just off the bat. I like that spring-loaded panel at the top of the door is taller (than my competitor brand) so that it can accommodate more sizes of sliders. I have multiple different heights of sliders at my house so that gives me more options of doors for me to place the insert in. This is beneficial to me when I have a party for example because I can give my dogs indoor/outdoor access to a secluded part of my house when young children are over. The second part I really like is the extra security with the locking panel to close the doggy door. Whereas my competitor version only has a plastic lock that could easily be broken into by potential intruders, the PetSafe has a very secure metal pin lock. Third, I appreciate that this insert has a slight tint to it. My competitor version does not. When I open the doggy door in the early morning in my bedroom I "hook" my curtains around my original slider handle for my dogs to access the door and I go back to sleep. The tinting on this insert is at least some attempt to block out the daylight. Finally, I like that they include some weather striping to help combat some unwanted drafts. Although I would recommend to combo the weather stripping provided with foam weather stripping to really complete the seal. I'm giving it three stars because it is working but for the price, I expected a higher-quality item. In some ways this unit is too thin for my patio door track and is floppy, and in other ways – specifically the attachment brackets and the door "latch" – it is too wide. I had to come up with another way to fix the panel in place, then insert foam tape because it kept flapping when the door was used or the wind blew too hard, and then buy separate security bars for the patio door. Not ideal. And I also plan that I will need to remove it if I leave for an extended period of time, as this thing is a serious security vulnerability in the home's perimeter now…not that most adults don't already fit through an extra large pet door opening. I wish this had a full closure panel – aluminum, hinged. Solid aluminum frame. Nice weather flaps. Nylon screws would be better as metal but allow more flexibility in installing. My biggest disappointment in this door is that the slide closing door panel did not keep my dog from sliding it off and having full access to the outside in the middle of the night. It doesn’t latch so he just pushes it up and walks out whenever he wants. This completely defeats the purpose of this purchase and now I have a hole in my door for my dog and all his friends to come and go.Disappointed customer 615
We purchased this for our large rough collie. It was simple to install in our steel door between our garage door and entry. He learned to use it almost immediately. It has a metal panel that will slide in from the top of the frame to lock the door. The flap itself is tinted, and we would have preferred a clear one (like a previous dog door we have installed from the garage out to the yard). Our 12 year old dog has poor eyesight, and probably would be a bit happier if he could see the light through the door. It is a great dog door, and allows our senior to come and go as he pleases. So far it closes completely and quickly, helping to keep out mosquitoes and bugs. They can go into the yard again without me needing to open the door to their space from the screen room. I bought up one size and I'm glad I did. It is safer for them if they're going out quickly and they don't hit their bodies on the frame. I also applied a Cricut sticker I made to the locking door so that they can easily see if I have them locked in. I would've given 5 stars but the product was not nearly as big as some of the pics appeared to be. Yes i did check measurements. But the one i got would never fit a dog the size of the one in the pic. I've got a 1 yr old pitbull mix who's about the same size… or soon will be. Lol. I still like the door itself tho.Momma Rivera

This extreme weather pet door is absolutely a perfect fit for our home. It gives my 2 fur babies the opportunity to go outside, or come inside as they please. This means I don't have to constantly go open and shut the door for them. It's great for both my dogs, the big and the small have no issues coming in and out. Besides that one aspect, the door fit perfect, locks on to the magnet great (wash old magnet connected to the frame) and all else is nice. I would reorder. I just wish the replacement was exactly like the door that came with the frame to start with. We have big dogs and hopefully this door can hold up like the original. Only time will tell!lanas2004

Excellent opening size for our pet who is 18 lbs. I purchased the Medium opening. Our sliding door is a custom height of 12 FT, not a normal height, so using the extension included with the patio panel still doesn’t reach the top of the sliding door, which of course is not the problem of the manufacturer of this product. We remedied the problem by using and cutting to size a disposable hard foam cooler, fitted with a foam edge window and door sealer in order to eliminate cool and hot air from coming in and out. It’s not perfect, but works for our pet and for our use.Grace
The door is well made and easy to install. we bought the large bronze. Only problem we have is that we have 3 dogs and one is a pug, other two are big 80lb even though rated for 100lb dogs and I measured them, for out dogs was a little short., I fixed by adding a small block under raising it an inch. but the 4-5' rise really does work for small dog. The XL version may have been better. But only came in white and more expensive. Been a couple weeks now and the bigger dogs are doing great. Pug, we open the slider for him. Overall well made and works well. Just a matter of getting sized right. May not work as well when you have a mix of small and large dogs.RichardJ

The product seems to be of good quality and functional. However, the cats are having some issues with the magnetic door securing device having more resistance to opening than the previous cat flap. They tend to push the flap with there pores first to see if its locked. Having a magmatic catch it keeps shutting. However i think this is something that they will overcome in time. The fitting is a little tricky due to the close proximity of the fixings to the edge of the cat flap door and the fixing screws are very small.triple.xx
I was replacing an old for new which I thought would have saved me having to cut a new hole or drill new bolt holes. Wrong! The flap was ever so slightly larger, so I still had to get the tools out to fit. The other difficult thing was trying to get the tiny nuts on the bolts. Took me 2-3 hours on my own. Really needs 2 people, and then its still difficult!!! Sure they could think of an easier way to fix, like having a moulded nut holder on one side, that the nut coud sit in, while tightening the bolt from the other side.. SORTED ! Having said that. Its a decent cat flap for the most affordable model.1959mirage
Parts were well made and the instructions were adequate with templates for hole cutting. Fitting the outer and inner parts is fine but the pieces to create a clean entry through the door were a real fiddle. Having cut the hole exactly to size I found it needed to be about 2-3mm bigger all round. What a chore. So much better to have made the pattern a touch larger. It has a slide down shutter to blank it off at night or if away.nodixok
