These are nice dog houses. They are light weight & don't look like they are very warm, but they actually do a good job, my border collies like these a lot. The extra neck or tunnel entrance is nice to give them some extra protection and privacy. They stand up pretty well to puppies chewing on them to. I recommend this dog house.Iowafarmgal

I mistakenly bought the Large doghouse for dogs up to 90 lbs. But my 5 month old coonhound was too large for it. I returned it and ordered the X-large doghouse and it is the right size. Unfortunately, the doghouse was broken in two places, probably due to the way you ship. These doghouses are delivered without any protection and will crack or break when sliding into anything. I will have to repair it to hold it together since I don't trust you are able to send another one without the same issues.Daniel

It's not extra large, that's for sure. It's a large. My two Berner males at 94-lbs and 120-lbs don't go in because they can barely turn around in it. Nor my 88-lb Pyrenees. The material itself is great. But isn't the point that the dog can get in/out of it so they use it? My smaller 72-lb female uses her Ex-Lg. So is it really the size a medium dog should use? I spent $$ for 5 Extra Lg and 1 dog uses it. Not a happy camper.SCloudcroft

Purchased a second XL house for our two Great Pyrenees because they no longer fit in one together. Our original is over 15 years old and is in great shape. Love the new design with the slight angle that provides more space and blocks the wind. Durable and strong material, yet still lightweight and easy to move.S Ringo

I got this recently on a great sale price… it was half the cost of another dog house that I bought (and returned). The one I ended up returning was designed as an actual house, but cost $100 and the plastic was very flimsy… I felt it wasn't worth the price, and my dog never liked it. I looked online and saw this "dog house" (it's really a crate, IMO); and Petco had the least expensive price, at half the retail cost. I was also able to pick it up the same day at a local store, and received a further discount for picking it up at the store. There's only 2 pieces (a top and a bottom), and the top basically just sits on the bottom, with tabs that are supposed to hold it in place. It's not the most secure, but I don't see this being blown across the yard or anything. The plastic is heavy duty and sturdy… I mean sure, if you live in a tornado or hurricane area, then of course, yes, it'll get toss across the neighborhood; but otherwise, it should stay in place. Great for when you need to leave your pet outside for a while. It's very wide, but not very long though. My dog can curl up in here and he can fit, but he can not stretch out or lay out in this… which is fine, because dogs usually like sleeping curled up and they like snug fitting enclosures to sleep in. My standard size labradoodle fits into it. He uses it to sleep in. This is not something he can stand straight up in or something he can stretch out in… but for sleeping, he loves to curl up in it. I bought it for use outside during the winter or a rainy day, to get out of the cold or rain when I have to put him outside in the yard for a while. We put it inside the house first so that he would get use to it. The one I got said it was for dogs 50-90 lbs., which is the large size. He has no problem getting in and out of this, and he likes it a lot better than the Suncast house shaped doghouse I got him (which I ended up returning). This is plastic, but it's made of heavy duty plastic and it's sturdy; there's only a top and bottom part, and basically the top part sits on the bottom part, with tabs that are supposed to hold the two pieces together. I got it on sale, so I got it for a great price.NYCGalOut

Got these doghouses as an outdoor reprieve from the elements for our 2 Huskies. They are very sturdy and made of solid hard plastic. They've managed to remain dry inside even in a couple of downpours and driving rain. The only time that wasn't the case is when I had one on an uneven patch of grass. So you definitely want to place it on a platform if there's no flat surface. Unfortunately our pups, house dogs that LOVE to go out and play, still haven't embraced the concept of having a private pad "outside." Other than that, it's easy to set up and clean. It has plenty of room for our 70 pounder and is absolutely palatial for the 45 pounder. I got the large size for both since they were so affordable – $44 bucks each! Love the color. I have been using these large Permate dog houses to house my Nigerian Dwarf goats for many years. They have made "affordable housing" for my goats. I will say that my bucks (boys) are much harder on the houses than the does (girls). Both genders jump on top, but the bucks crack the rain shield by jumping on top of the houses. This happens after a while, not right away. I don't blame the company that makes these because they are intended for dogs, not goats that love to climb! I do wish the tops would be stronger to prevent this problem from happening. Another area to improve design would be for the top to somehow lock on to the base. When my Great Pyrenees (GP) dog goes inside to lay down, the lid can lift/tilt off. The large size is not big enough for a GP. The price keeps going up, and I'm not pleased with having to pay more. I wait until the neighbor club coupon comes out to buy any needed replacement houses. Over the years I've bought countless Permate Large dog houses, so I know these pretty well! My Lab and Australian Shepherd love these large Petmate houses too.Farmer Johns

Looks very nice and hardy but it floods when it rains, I don't know how but the water gets inside and it is too much water. I put a crate pad inside for my outdoor cat to stay warm and went to check on my cat a few hours later after it rained, and the pad was soaking wet not to mention the house was full of water more water than what was outside . The dog house comes in two parts – top and bottom. They do not snap together; the top merely sits on the bottom. No hardware is provided to attach the two and even if there was there are no holes through which one would thread screws or bolts (or whatever) to keep the dog house together. I use these for my goats because these houses are inexpensive but the goats knowingly and regularly have fun pushing up on the exit/entrance hole to "break" the house into two pieces. Yes, I laugh at their antics but I still plan to drill holes and use nuts/bolts to keep the top and bottom together.L McGaffey

Bought this for our 7 month old Pyrador puppy, who has already outgrown one house. It was easy to put together, and the sturdist dog house we've ever seen. Plus being insulated is perfect for a cold Indiana winter. She's huge and still growing and loves it. The first night she slept in front of it despite dog treats inside. Second night was cooler, she decided to check it out so the head and front paws went thru the swinging door first, and after she had stood that way for about 5 minutes, walked all the way in, and has loved it ever since. From the size if it unless she grows as much as Clifford the big red dog, she'll get to enjoy for a lifetime.PJ

We got this house for a new Boxador puppy so that it can spend most of its time outside. We found it to be a good product. It was easy to put together and does stay much warmer than the outside air. In rainy weather, it stays dry. It is a very large house which would work for a lab or other large dog. No problems with the dog using the door. Only suggestion: add nuts and bolts for the 6 screws. Screwing metal into plastic is not a real good plan. I'm assuming the company will have replacement parts (door, window, etc…) available for my investment!Y Robinson

I use these for my nigerian dwarf and lamancha goats…. In addition to our barn, as additional cover and housing. The little ones got breat but so do the full soze 3 year old lamanchas. The buckling boys will actually share an XL one during the coldest days of winter in PA, and they are now 1 year old. Love these. And relatively easy to move for rotational grazingBrandon2197

This is a good quality, sturdy plastic dog house. We have a medium sized German Shepherd and he easily fits in the large dog kennel and has room to curl up and sleep. I had been rigging my dogs summer tent to shelter my stray cat..I fed her, so she’s mine lol…but it just wasn’t cutting it anymore and it is oddly cold this winter here in Alabama. I added a heavy layer of straw, some fleece blankets and she moved right on in! I feel better knowing she is safe, warm, well fed & happy! I used some drop plastic (thick), and duct tape to create a door that would keep the wind & rain out and warmth in! Couldn’t be happier!KimCole

I bought this directly from Petmate because it was bigger than the competitions and the same price. I use it for 2 of my feral cats to sleep in but am sure another large cat would fit in too. It was very easy to assemble ( just clicks together) and as soon as I filled it with straw the cats were happily sleeping in it.Fleur

Arrived quickly. Easy to set up. Very light. Some small pieces might blow away with heavy wind, like the screw covers on roof and the side panel that only holds shut with two flimsy removable tabs. This igloo dog house is absolutely the best thing on the market. Heavy, durable and withstands high winds, rain, and hail. I haven't been able to test in cold temperatures yet as I just received this recently. However, I have no doubts it will definitely hold up. I waited to give a review because I wanted to test out the weather conditions to truly give my 100% honest opinion. Does not come assembled but it's an easy process. The large is quite large. My dog is 60lbs and has plenty of room left in it to move adound. Provides a great shelter. It is constructed very well. You will definitely not be disappointed with this product! Those who have dogs that live outside this would be perfect for. Very well insulated and lining with straw in the winter will make it that much more insulated. We live in Pennsylvania so our winters can be brutal with sometimes 3 seasons in 1 day. I'm not sure how this would hold up insulation wise in much colder climates but for us it's absolutely perfect.Cainjm301

I got this igloo-shaped dog house for our Shih Tzu which is 20 lbs. I got this to keep her cool in the warm months when we sit on our patio. It came in two separate pieces in a large box. The top part of the dog house has 4 brackets which easily snaps to the bottom half for quick assembly. I assembled it in our home and needed to carry it out onto our patio through the front of the house since it was too wide to fit through our sliding door. It is surprisingly lightweight for its dimensions, so it is easy to carry to different locations. The top of the house has a round vent with a paw print which can be turned to open or close it as needed for ventilation. Because of its design, there’s room for movement. The smaller opening in the front protects it from the elements such as wind and sun; although rain did get in through that front opening and not the vent. It disassembles quickly for cleaning or even to transport away from home! Although it is a large house, I feel that it is suitable for a medium size dog so that it can have enough room to move comfortably. Once assembled, my dog was confused and leery, which is to be expected since it’s something new! I gently introduced her to the inside and she was able to move around comfortable until she nested on her bedding. I highly recommend this house for any small to med sized pet to be used in the summer to keep them cool and winter to keep them warmer. Yet because it lacks insulation. I would not recommend it for permanent outside shelter in the winter. Additionally, I did notice that it got hot on the patio and thus I had to move it to a shady area to avoid overheating my dog. Lastly, please leave a water bowl near this house in whatever weather!Madz64

This is one of the best dog houses I have ever had. I love that its light weight but very sturdy dog house. I have never seen a vent on a dog house, but I have to say that is a genius idea for all dogs. My dogs like that it's roomy and keeps them warm on the cooler and hot days. I like that. I got this for a ~60lbs. labrador retriever and he seems to love it. Big enough on the inside for him to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably. It's sturdy, but not so heavy that it doesn't move around a little bit when he changes positions. It was easy enough to put together. A couple of the plastic screws didn't seem to have the ends filed off all the way (hard to describe but basically instead of a flat end, the plastic stuck out a little extra on one side instead of being flat across), which made them harder to fit straight through the holes in assembly. Fortunately, they send a few extra, so I had enough that were straight enough to put the crate together. Also, just be aware of the plastic bottom – I ran my hand across the bottom to clean it before putting it together and scraped my hand on a piece of plastic that stuck up a little (it was like a little ring manufacturing imprint). I filed it down before letting my dog in so he wouldn't get scraped on it, but just something to be on the look out for.Labbadabbadoo

The sizing recommendation by the manufacturer seems to be off. Dimensions are not the actual dimensions if you were to take a measuring tape and measure yourself. For my 55 lb border collie mix who sits at 27 inches tall and stands at 37 inches long from nose to base of tail a large would not fit. I ordered the XX Large and that is a way better fit where she can actually sit without being hunched over. This was purchased for air travel as well so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The material seems relatively durable but it did arrive with a large crack so I will be exchanging. Compared to the Petmate Sky Kennel, this kennel seemed a little bit thinner in material and not as study. However, I order a Sky Kennel in a size Large so perhaps a sizing difference might have affected this. Also, currently, the Sky Kennel is available for a better price on Amazon but not in the size I am looking for.Zozobozo

Most of all, our dog took to it the first time. We had the S, same company. Uma is getting big now. Of course, we chose the same company and same product, just L in size. When a puppy, accidents do happen. It is easy to clean. Uma is about 20lbs now and can stand up in the kennel. Still plenty of height room. She may become 30-40lbs and this kennel will be all we need. Our use is for nighttime and when we go out. We have the gray which does not stand out. It is a neutral color and looks good in your kitchen, bedroom or where you keep your dog. The kennel also provides a rectangular cage on both sides on the top half so the dog can look out. We just got ours 2 days ago. It was deklivered by UPS during the aftermath of hurricane Ida. The UPS man needed help unloading it and when I actually got it out of the weather I noticed the box was damaged. Got the wife to come and take pictures of the damage as I unpacked it. It wasn't actually too bad except for the roof being cracked, but not beyond what I can possibly repair. Multiple places there are either screws lost or obvious cracks in the material. I will repair it as well as I can and then trrow a few coats of Epoxy paint on and IN it to protect the wood. The kennal itself was in stock and went together easily. As my pups will be spending only a few hours in it I decided to keep it and repair it. I know there are at leaast 10 screws and bolts missing because the hardware packet was partially opened and some parts had obviously fallen out of the shipping container.Bogey1

I give five stars because for the price I believe it is a nice dog house. Steel framing seems sturdy and it comes with a composite floor that will not rot. I found it easy to put together, but I could see how others may not think it is easy. Parts labeled very well and squared up well on assembly. I recommend putting together on flat concrete and only move after installing after all self tapping srews are in place. Only negative thing I would have to say is that the walls are a little thin for my liking. I feel they could be a little thicker. Also i like how it attaches to the retriever kennel. This dog house is a huge waste of money. I plan on returning mine today. First off, the wooden panels are paper thin and the floor will bow under little weight. I'm actually afraid my dog would chew out of the house very quickly. There were some parts of the instructions that didn't say which way smaller parts should be facing, and you would go through all the trouble to put it together then find out that one small part had to be flipped, but the instructions were not clear about some parts. I rebuilt this dog house probably 5 times because parts just didn't fit well at all for some reason. Oh and you DO need a drill because part of it want's you to drill screws through the metal frame because for some reason the holes were not included in the frames? The metal frame is cheap and easily bends under little weight. The only reason I even got this doghouse is because I have the retriever kennel that goes with it. Do yourself a favor and get a better quality dog house or build a good one yourself.James009

The crate itself is satisfactory. The door did not close properly because some holes where the door holders should go through were not drilled out. I drilled additional holes to allow the door to close properly. Not all the holes where the fasteners are installed matched or were open.Anscar

Having borrowed an older model of this exact kennel for my puppy, I had nothing but high hopes for this product. This newer version was not made of the same thick plastic as before and the bottom buckled underneath the weight of my now full grown lab. I noticed in the picture that the closure was different but it didn't concern me…until it arrived, that is! It was SO DIFFICULT to latch and unlatch! I would have kept it, but this new latch was a deal breaker. Sadly I had to return it. PetMate, please consider going back to the spring hinge you used to use. I don't need a deadbolt to keep my dog secure. 🙁oneofsix

I bought this kennel for international travel as my XL Furrarri was a little too sml. Donated it to the Animal shelter! The traditional Vari Kennel does not have vents in the back wall and we had to drill vent holes in it to be IATA compliant. The plastic is very sturdy and appears quite substantial. The screws that come with it are metal which are required by airlines. Petco offered free shipping and I bought it on sale so I think it is a very good buy for international flying. It is very large even when in two halves so fitting it in a car could be a problem, even takes up a lot of room in a SUV. I recommend assembling it at airport.Moko

I bought the indigo pet door x-large a couple weeks ago and am extremely happy with how how quickly it arrived. It easy it was to install and the quality is exactly what was needed. This will definitely keep my Little Bit warm this winter when the cold hits here in Texas. I ordered the same door in a large before I went to Tractor Supply and bought the Indigo pet house. Little did I know my Little Bit isn't a "large" dog. Lol I ended up going with the XL house because I know how my fur baby likes to stretch out when he sleeps. I left Tractor Supply and immediately called customer service to see if I could change my order. It was to late, it had already been processed. The agent was very nice and ordered the XL door I needed & advised me to return the Large door to the store. The store refunded me with no questions asked!! Although I bought the door I'm not sure it will work as I want. I bought the Igloo and door for feral neighborhood cats to stay warm this winter. My one local outside cat walked into the Igloo and napped, but this was after I installed the door, flipped it up and taped it up inside. I taped it up in order to let cats get used to the Igloo and door after being installed. Later, after I know cats are going into the Igloo I will release the door and let it hang normally; hopefully, the cats will get used to going in and out of the Igloo and pushing through the door.Ward

The door seems to be working as designed and my dog quickly learned to use it with no problem. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is the difficulty in installing it. There is so little space to hold the nut to put the bolt into (the bolt cannot be put in first!) that my awkward hands could not install it as designed. I wound up using zip ties instead, which seem to work well so far.Jeb232

I’m using this as s duck house for six ducks. Not hard to put together, you’ll need Phillips and pliers or wrench, instructions are not the best. Made of less dense version of pine. Roof is hinged and floor comes out in the parts for clean up. I like it.Redeyenc

The dog house (which is being used for a feral cat), arrived quickly and was pretty easy to assemble. It is sturdy enough for our uses, which included putting a smaller insulated cat container in one side of the house and food/water dishes near the entrance. Having the roof lift makes adjustments and cleaning easy. I'm not sure how well this would work for a larger, energetic dog, but it does for us.NDCat

My GSD pup is crate trained. I purchased my first PetMate plastic crate in 2004 and never had an issue. When my GSD got too big for his wire kennel, I upgraded the size and got a PetMate Ultra (for its airline approved status). For three solid nights and any day time crate use highly distressed my dog. No one in the house slept. He was quite agitated (barking, clawing at the crate bottom, etc). He could not sleep or lay down in the crate. On the fourth night, I put him in the crate with the same result. Ten minutes later, I took out the old 2004 crate (flat bottom, no injection mold markers) and popped him in it. He sat down and gave the biggest sigh. I finally understood he had been in distress because of the new crate. On inspection, I discovered these round things under the bottom, pressed into them with my forearms and immediately felt the pressure points/pain. Who thought this design was a good idea? Did PetMate even try it? I beg designers to sit in it, lie down in it, press their forearms on to these circle things. Question your motives. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a cheap excuse and terrible quality. I’ll be cross-posting this comment on multiple pet store sites. I’m so unimpressed with this design. The incredible distress my dog endured because of shoddy design is unacceptable. PetMate needs to do better for the pets you aim to help. PetMax shouldn’t sell this product; they should ensure the pets they serve do not experience stress or injury.Ginn

The plastic has gotten more brittle than it used to be. Already has stress marks on corners and not even used. The sky kennels I have from 20 years ago are still functioning. This "medium" doghouse was smaller than described in the online details. The length was 2 inches shorter. The width and depth were each 1 inch shorter. I had most of the doghouse assembled before I decided to measure it. I had to take it apart, package it up and return it to my local store. Fortunately, the return process was easy. This purchase was a waste of time, and now I still need to buy a new doghouse.LTY2
