Petmate Indigo Dog House Large For Sale (2024 Update)

It's not extra large, that's for sure. It's a large. My two Berner males at 94-lbs and 120-lbs don't go in because they can barely turn around in it. Nor my 88-lb Pyrenees. The material itself is great. But isn't the point that the dog can get in/out of it so they use it? My smaller 72-lb female uses her Ex-Lg. So is it really the size a medium dog should use? I spent $$ for 5 Extra Lg and 1 dog uses it. Not a happy camper.SCloudcroft

Purchased a second XL house for our two Great Pyrenees because they no longer fit in one together. Our original is over 15 years old and is in great shape. Love the new design with the slight angle that provides more space and blocks the wind. Durable and strong material, yet still lightweight and easy to move.S Ringo

These are nice dog houses. They are light weight & don't look like they are very warm, but they actually do a good job, my border collies like these a lot. The extra neck or tunnel entrance is nice to give them some extra protection and privacy. They stand up pretty well to puppies chewing on them to. I recommend this dog house.Iowafarmgal

I mistakenly bought the Large doghouse for dogs up to 90 lbs. But my 5 month old coonhound was too large for it. I returned it and ordered the X-large doghouse and it is the right size. Unfortunately, the doghouse was broken in two places, probably due to the way you ship. These doghouses are delivered without any protection and will crack or break when sliding into anything. I will have to repair it to hold it together since I don't trust you are able to send another one without the same issues.Daniel

I got this recently on a great sale price… it was half the cost of another dog house that I bought (and returned). The one I ended up returning was designed as an actual house, but cost $100 and the plastic was very flimsy… I felt it wasn't worth the price, and my dog never liked it. I looked online and saw this "dog house" (it's really a crate, IMO); and Petco had the least expensive price, at half the retail cost. I was also able to pick it up the same day at a local store, and received a further discount for picking it up at the store. There's only 2 pieces (a top and a bottom), and the top basically just sits on the bottom, with tabs that are supposed to hold it in place. It's not the most secure, but I don't see this being blown across the yard or anything. The plastic is heavy duty and sturdy… I mean sure, if you live in a tornado or hurricane area, then of course, yes, it'll get toss across the neighborhood; but otherwise, it should stay in place. Great for when you need to leave your pet outside for a while. It's very wide, but not very long though. My dog can curl up in here and he can fit, but he can not stretch out or lay out in this… which is fine, because dogs usually like sleeping curled up and they like snug fitting enclosures to sleep in. My standard size labradoodle fits into it. He uses it to sleep in. This is not something he can stand straight up in or something he can stretch out in… but for sleeping, he loves to curl up in it. I bought it for use outside during the winter or a rainy day, to get out of the cold or rain when I have to put him outside in the yard for a while. We put it inside the house first so that he would get use to it. The one I got said it was for dogs 50-90 lbs., which is the large size. He has no problem getting in and out of this, and he likes it a lot better than the Suncast house shaped doghouse I got him (which I ended up returning). This is plastic, but it's made of heavy duty plastic and it's sturdy; there's only a top and bottom part, and basically the top part sits on the bottom part, with tabs that are supposed to hold the two pieces together. I got it on sale, so I got it for a great price.NYCGalOut

Got these doghouses as an outdoor reprieve from the elements for our 2 Huskies. They are very sturdy and made of solid hard plastic. They've managed to remain dry inside even in a couple of downpours and driving rain. The only time that wasn't the case is when I had one on an uneven patch of grass. So you definitely want to place it on a platform if there's no flat surface. Unfortunately our pups, house dogs that LOVE to go out and play, still haven't embraced the concept of having a private pad "outside." Other than that, it's easy to set up and clean. It has plenty of room for our 70 pounder and is absolutely palatial for the 45 pounder. I got the large size for both since they were so affordable – $44 bucks each! Love the color. I have been using these large Permate dog houses to house my Nigerian Dwarf goats for many years. They have made "affordable housing" for my goats. I will say that my bucks (boys) are much harder on the houses than the does (girls). Both genders jump on top, but the bucks crack the rain shield by jumping on top of the houses. This happens after a while, not right away. I don't blame the company that makes these because they are intended for dogs, not goats that love to climb! I do wish the tops would be stronger to prevent this problem from happening. Another area to improve design would be for the top to somehow lock on to the base. When my Great Pyrenees (GP) dog goes inside to lay down, the lid can lift/tilt off. The large size is not big enough for a GP. The price keeps going up, and I'm not pleased with having to pay more. I wait until the neighbor club coupon comes out to buy any needed replacement houses. Over the years I've bought countless Permate Large dog houses, so I know these pretty well! My Lab and Australian Shepherd love these large Petmate houses too.Farmer Johns

Looks very nice and hardy but it floods when it rains, I don't know how but the water gets inside and it is too much water. I put a crate pad inside for my outdoor cat to stay warm and went to check on my cat a few hours later after it rained, and the pad was soaking wet not to mention the house was full of water more water than what was outside . The dog house comes in two parts – top and bottom. They do not snap together; the top merely sits on the bottom. No hardware is provided to attach the two and even if there was there are no holes through which one would thread screws or bolts (or whatever) to keep the dog house together. I use these for my goats because these houses are inexpensive but the goats knowingly and regularly have fun pushing up on the exit/entrance hole to "break" the house into two pieces. Yes, I laugh at their antics but I still plan to drill holes and use nuts/bolts to keep the top and bottom together.L McGaffey

Bought this for our 7 month old Pyrador puppy, who has already outgrown one house. It was easy to put together, and the sturdist dog house we've ever seen. Plus being insulated is perfect for a cold Indiana winter. She's huge and still growing and loves it. The first night she slept in front of it despite dog treats inside. Second night was cooler, she decided to check it out so the head and front paws went thru the swinging door first, and after she had stood that way for about 5 minutes, walked all the way in, and has loved it ever since. From the size if it unless she grows as much as Clifford the big red dog, she'll get to enjoy for a lifetime.PJ

We got this house for a new Boxador puppy so that it can spend most of its time outside. We found it to be a good product. It was easy to put together and does stay much warmer than the outside air. In rainy weather, it stays dry. It is a very large house which would work for a lab or other large dog. No problems with the dog using the door. Only suggestion: add nuts and bolts for the 6 screws. Screwing metal into plastic is not a real good plan. I'm assuming the company will have replacement parts (door, window, etc…) available for my investment!Y Robinson

I use these for my nigerian dwarf and lamancha goats…. In addition to our barn, as additional cover and housing. The little ones got breat but so do the full soze 3 year old lamanchas. The buckling boys will actually share an XL one during the coldest days of winter in PA, and they are now 1 year old. Love these. And relatively easy to move for rotational grazingBrandon2197

This is a good quality, sturdy plastic dog house. We have a medium sized German Shepherd and he easily fits in the large dog kennel and has room to curl up and sleep. It does a pretty good job keeping the rain out, only a little splattering of water gets in in the front but not too bad. Overall, quite happy with the purchase!angelnadie

I had been rigging my dogs summer tent to shelter my stray cat..I fed her, so she’s mine lol…but it just wasn’t cutting it anymore and it is oddly cold this winter here in Alabama. I added a heavy layer of straw, some fleece blankets and she moved right on in! I feel better knowing she is safe, warm, well fed & happy! I used some drop plastic (thick), and duct tape to create a door that would keep the wind & rain out and warmth in! Couldn’t be happier!KimCole

I bought this directly from Petmate because it was bigger than the competitions and the same price. I use it for 2 of my feral cats to sleep in but am sure another large cat would fit in too. It was very easy to assemble ( just clicks together) and as soon as I filled it with straw the cats were happily sleeping in it.Fleur

You have to put it together and it looked kinda flimsey. But it was easy to snap together and became very strong. I bought it for my Hen Turkey to nest in, and she loves it!amyj67074

Arrived quickly. Easy to set up. Very light. Some small pieces might blow away with heavy wind, like the screw covers on roof and the side panel that only holds shut with two flimsy removable tabs. I bought the indigo pet door x-large a couple weeks ago and am extremely happy with how how quickly it arrived. It easy it was to install and the quality is exactly what was needed. This will definitely keep my Little Bit warm this winter when the cold hits here in Texas. I ordered the same door in a large before I went to Tractor Supply and bought the Indigo pet house. Little did I know my Little Bit isn't a "large" dog. Lol I ended up going with the XL house because I know how my fur baby likes to stretch out when he sleeps. I left Tractor Supply and immediately called customer service to see if I could change my order. It was to late, it had already been processed. The agent was very nice and ordered the XL door I needed & advised me to return the Large door to the store. The store refunded me with no questions asked!! Although I bought the door I'm not sure it will work as I want. I bought the Igloo and door for feral neighborhood cats to stay warm this winter. My one local outside cat walked into the Igloo and napped, but this was after I installed the door, flipped it up and taped it up inside. I taped it up in order to let cats get used to the Igloo and door after being installed. Later, after I know cats are going into the Igloo I will release the door and let it hang normally; hopefully, the cats will get used to going in and out of the Igloo and pushing through the door.Ward

The door seems to be working as designed and my dog quickly learned to use it with no problem. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is the difficulty in installing it. There is so little space to hold the nut to put the bolt into (the bolt cannot be put in first!) that my awkward hands could not install it as designed. This igloo dog house is absolutely the best thing on the market. Heavy, durable and withstands high winds, rain, and hail. I haven't been able to test in cold temperatures yet as I just received this recently. However, I have no doubts it will definitely hold up. I waited to give a review because I wanted to test out the weather conditions to truly give my 100% honest opinion. Does not come assembled but it's an easy process. The large is quite large. My dog is 60lbs and has plenty of room left in it to move adound. Provides a great shelter. It is constructed very well. You will definitely not be disappointed with this product! Those who have dogs that live outside this would be perfect for. Very well insulated and lining with straw in the winter will make it that much more insulated. We live in Pennsylvania so our winters can be brutal with sometimes 3 seasons in 1 day. I'm not sure how this would hold up insulation wise in much colder climates but for us it's absolutely perfect.Cainjm301

I got this igloo-shaped dog house for our Shih Tzu which is 20 lbs. I got this to keep her cool in the warm months when we sit on our patio. It came in two separate pieces in a large box. The top part of the dog house has 4 brackets which easily snaps to the bottom half for quick assembly. I assembled it in our home and needed to carry it out onto our patio through the front of the house since it was too wide to fit through our sliding door. It is surprisingly lightweight for its dimensions, so it is easy to carry to different locations. The top of the house has a round vent with a paw print which can be turned to open or close it as needed for ventilation. Because of its design, there’s room for movement. The smaller opening in the front protects it from the elements such as wind and sun; although rain did get in through that front opening and not the vent. It disassembles quickly for cleaning or even to transport away from home! Although it is a large house, I feel that it is suitable for a medium size dog so that it can have enough room to move comfortably. Once assembled, my dog was confused and leery, which is to be expected since it’s something new! I gently introduced her to the inside and she was able to move around comfortable until she nested on her bedding. I highly recommend this house for any small to med sized pet to be used in the summer to keep them cool and winter to keep them warmer. Yet because it lacks insulation. I would not recommend it for permanent outside shelter in the winter. Additionally, I did notice that it got hot on the patio and thus I had to move it to a shady area to avoid overheating my dog. Lastly, please leave a water bowl near this house in whatever weather!Madz64

This is one of the best dog houses I have ever had. I love that its light weight but very sturdy dog house. I have never seen a vent on a dog house, but I have to say that is a genius idea for all dogs. My dogs like that it's roomy and keeps them warm on the cooler and hot days. I like that. The dog house is stylish and easy to move around. During storms, it keeps my dogs safe and dry, which I love. This dog house brought many smiles to my dogs' face as well as providing a comfortable home for them.rana

I got this for a ~60lbs. labrador retriever and he seems to love it. Big enough on the inside for him to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably. It's sturdy, but not so heavy that it doesn't move around a little bit when he changes positions. It was easy enough to put together. A couple of the plastic screws didn't seem to have the ends filed off all the way (hard to describe but basically instead of a flat end, the plastic stuck out a little extra on one side instead of being flat across), which made them harder to fit straight through the holes in assembly. Fortunately, they send a few extra, so I had enough that were straight enough to put the crate together. Also, just be aware of the plastic bottom – I ran my hand across the bottom to clean it before putting it together and scraped my hand on a piece of plastic that stuck up a little (it was like a little ring manufacturing imprint). I filed it down before letting my dog in so he wouldn't get scraped on it, but just something to be on the look out for.Labbadabbadoo

The sizing recommendation by the manufacturer seems to be off. Dimensions are not the actual dimensions if you were to take a measuring tape and measure yourself. For my 55 lb border collie mix who sits at 27 inches tall and stands at 37 inches long from nose to base of tail a large would not fit. I ordered the XX Large and that is a way better fit where she can actually sit without being hunched over. This was purchased for air travel as well so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The material seems relatively durable but it did arrive with a large crack so I will be exchanging. Compared to the Petmate Sky Kennel, this kennel seemed a little bit thinner in material and not as study. However, I order a Sky Kennel in a size Large so perhaps a sizing difference might have affected this. Also, currently, the Sky Kennel is available for a better price on Amazon but not in the size I am looking for.Zozobozo

Nicely built, easy to assemble (all holes line up for screws, about 10 with butterfly nuts).You get extra screws and rubber nuts. The cage design for opening and closing is nice and easy to use. Most of all, our dog took to it the first time. We had the S, same company. Uma is getting big now. Of course, we chose the same company and same product, just L in size. When a puppy, accidents do happen. It is easy to clean. Uma is about 20lbs now and can stand up in the kennel. Still plenty of height room. She may become 30-40lbs and this kennel will be all we need. Our use is for nighttime and when we go out. We have the gray which does not stand out. It is a neutral color and looks good in your kitchen, bedroom or where you keep your dog. The kennel also provides a rectangular cage on both sides on the top half so the dog can look out. flying my 2 kitties cargo was an ordeal that i absolutely DO NOT EVER want to go through again.(im sure it wasnt even that bad for them, but it was terrible for me!) ultimately though, it had to be done. ive never shipped/flown a pet before so this all began with a search for a crate. petmate skykennel was the obvious choice. even though they're cats, my boys are big fellas. i went with the medium size so they'd have extra room. the crates were exactly what i needed. only thing i will say is, i did order an extra set of all-metal bolts/fasteners (from amazon); the ones that come with the crates are ok, but the overruling word on pet cargo travel seems to be all-metal is required. maybe its just required for international flights? either way i ordered a set. glad i bought ONLY that from amazon, though!i was about to buy the crates from there too, then i thought hmmm maybe someplace else had them at a better price…and yep… "someplace else" sure did! I did a lot of research before we decided to by the extra large Petmate dog crate. We currently have the "Giant" dog crate in a bedroom for our mixed malamute–but we have to disassemble it to take it out of the room. We need the dog crate for when we take our dog camping. The last time we took him camping, on the last day, we left him in our cabin for a few hours. When we came back, he had tore the curtain and blinds apart on two different windows. We spent hours trying to get new blinds and I had to sew the curtains. So, this crate in mandatory if our dog is going camping again! We currently have a fifth wheel trailer that we camp in. Also, the metal dog crates–our dog can get right out of them using his body!Diane

My dog seems to love his new doghouse. It's very roomy and super easy to assemble. It's insulated too so hope it keeps him warm. We took the bottom half of the doggie door off to get use to going in and out of the doghouse. He did wonderful. I think when we put the bottom half back on it will be fine.LoriOe

I’m using this as s duck house for six ducks. Not hard to put together, you’ll need Phillips and pliers or wrench, instructions are not the best. Made of less dense version of pine. Roof is hinged and floor comes out in the parts for clean up. I like it.Redeyenc

Beautiful dog houses, but…. thin walled and are not insulated or double walled as noted in advertisement. I bought 3 ex large and one is already tore to pieces. Of note, the dog who's doghouse had a previous older wood doghouse and has lasted for 2 years, just to demonstrate that it is not solely due to dog. Very disappointed.cena222

The dog house (which is being used for a feral cat), arrived quickly and was pretty easy to assemble. It is sturdy enough for our uses, which included putting a smaller insulated cat container in one side of the house and food/water dishes near the entrance. Having the roof lift makes adjustments and cleaning easy. I'm not sure how well this would work for a larger, energetic dog, but it does for us.NDCat

I ordered a couple of these houses for my outdoor cats. They were easy to put together, but each house had a wood piece that was broke and I had to "gorilla glue" them together. Luckily the broken pieces of wood were in places that were not detrimental in keeping the house together. I thought about calling Hayneedle for replacements or something, but the houses have managed to stay together with the glued broken wood pieces, so I didn't bother.Cynthia

I purchased this dog house because its dimensions matched perfectly a concrete slab off of my back porch. I set it up about 3 weeks ago. Since then some of the vertical roof panels have buckled at the seems with the other vertical panels. It is exposed to sun from about noon & we had a light drizzle a few nights ago. I wonder if it will last through the winter as snow will accumulate on its roof & the wood is exceptionally light? My dog loves it, & like I said, it is a perfect fit off the back porch. I'm very happy with it, but fear the wood is too light to expect it to last maybe even through this winter. Sadly.Lucy

I bought the medium size house. It was very easy to put together, perfect size, puppy jumped right in and it looks great! I was really excited about it! The first night it was outside though it rained lightly and the next morning I discovered the roof had buckled up- very disappointing since it's an outside dog house so this should definitely not have happened! For this reason I don't recommend this particular dog house. But I do recommend Hayneedle! Their customer service is awesome, responds quickly and is very helpful!Danielle

Easy to put together. I was able to do it by myself ( 53 yr old female). I didn’t have any problems screwing the pieces together. The directions were easy to follow. I was able to get both of my dogs in it once I took the bottom door off. Negative: one of the plugs came out of one of the door halves and 1/2 the insulation came out. Otherwise I have nothing to add because we’ve only had it up for a couple of days.sleepwell43

This house claims to be insulated, but it’s not what you would think. The whole house is just hollow plastic. There is nothing in the walls or ceiling but air. I guess they think the double layer of plastic is considered insulated. I plan to fill the panels with something, not sure what yet.DT
