We have two fairly small dogs and this gate is amazing for containing them. The opening between our family room and our living room is 70" and this gate spans the opening perfectly. I especially like that it is free-standing and not attached to a wall. Because it has substantial plastic tabs that "catch" between the two walls of the opening, the dogs aren't able to push it open or push it over. Since it moves easily, they are able to insert noses between the gate and the wall it is pressing against and squeeze through that way. We have solved that with a jug of kitty litter against the gate. Not really attractive, but effective. It is very easy to move out of the way and put back in place, so I can get in and out of different rooms. It is short enough for our cats to jump over (20") and my husband easily steps over it (he's pretty tall). Our dogs are a Shiatsu who is fairly small and a small standard poodle. Neither of them has attempted to jump over the gate (they aren't jumpers). Larger dogs or those who are jumpers might be able to jump over. Our son has a very large standard poodle and she is quite able to get over the gate when she visits, so this might not be perfect for a larger dog. I have two very active Brittanys who easily jumped a 30-inch child gate at four months of age. My living room is the only room in the house with carpet, and I don't want them going in there during the muddy winter months. The opening is 60 inches wide, and I looked a long time for a gate that would be tall enough to prohibit jumping and wide enough to fit the space. These are very high quality durable and useful gates. There are tiny rubber pads under so you know which side to grab after putting away and the ease of the hinges are excellent. They are heavy enough to let the pet know it's stable and it's not a easy move with a nose plus the size and amount of panels make the setting of your area customized to the fit. I actually will buy more so I can use them out on the patio. Our dog understands boundaries and seems satisfied to see us until the entry is opened. I bought one brown which is a nice dark walnut color brown and a white one which both have a nice what I would describe as an enameled type gloss finish for protective wear. The gate works well. The materials are good. Gets a bit flimsey at full extension. Install directions were adequate. Holes to attach the 2 sections were slightly misaligned and required is to drill one of them out slightly to allow the hardware to be installed on both top and bottom.Tommy2X
I love this gate, especially for the price! I had to cover an 8 foot area and its perfect. My little one is 1 1/2 and he likes to shake it. Each end is connected into studs so it wiggles but its secure. Both sides have a little slide door, its easy to slide but I prefer to step over. The latch kinda sticks. I also needed a dog door so I actually made one myself with this gate and it was really easy! I know all the dog door long gates are super expensive. I hope this helps!jennifer
We bought this gate for an 89inch entryway between our dining room and living room and it works perfectly. Installation was fast and easy and it has held up to all of my kids banging on it and shaking it and whatever it is that kids typically do. the metal bracket screwed into the gate at the bottom is a little bent from their activity but I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon, bent, but still works perfectly. We don't have any problems opening it and closing it, it might be a little tricky when I am in a hurry but still only takes a few seconds. My 3 1/2 years old did open it once unassisted but he hasn't tried it since, I'd imagine its pretty tricky for most kids especially for the ones younger than 3. We bought this for our 1 year old and I wished I had bought it sooner!! I love that it condenses and swings open both directions, can be opened from either end, and that it would be very easy to put away for when guests come over if need be. I needed a light weight, yet stable gate that I can take with me to set up visiting family. I also use it to keep my Beagle off certain expensive rugs at home . She does not knock it over. These are very high quality durable and useful gates. There are tiny rubber pads under so you know which side to grab after putting away and the ease of the hinges are excellent. They are heavy enough to let the pet know it's stable and it's not a easy move with a nose plus the size and amount of panels make the setting of your area customized to the fit. I actually will buy more so I can use them out on the patio. Our dog understands boundaries and seems satisfied to see us until the entry is opened. I bought one brown which is a nice dark walnut color brown and a white one which both have a nice what I would describe as an enameled type gloss finish for protective wear. You won't be disappointed however if you're looking for a stoppage barrier this is simply a sturdy boundary maker so you would need a secured gate or kennel for that.JJ

We have two fairly small dogs and this gate is amazing for containing them. The opening between our family room and our living room is 70" and this gate spans the opening perfectly. I especially like that it is free-standing and not attached to a wall. Because it has substantial plastic tabs that "catch" between the two walls of the opening, the dogs aren't able to push it open or push it over. Since it moves easily, they are able to insert noses between the gate and the wall it is pressing against and squeeze through that way. We have solved that with a jug of kitty litter against the gate. Not really attractive, but effective. It is very easy to move out of the way and put back in place, so I can get in and out of different rooms. It is short enough for our cats to jump over (20") and my husband easily steps over it (he's pretty tall). Our dogs are a Shiatsu who is fairly small and a small standard poodle. Neither of them has attempted to jump over the gate (they aren't jumpers). Larger dogs or those who are jumpers might be able to jump over. Our son has a very large standard poodle and she is quite able to get over the gate when she visits, so this might not be perfect for a larger dog. This gate works great. I needed something big enough for a 50-62 in opening, but also strong enough that my dogs cant push it aside so easily. Besides being extremely adaptable to a variety of situations, it’s also terrific looking! The latch sucks. My toddler can always open it, and my dog can sometimes open it. I don't know why they didn't keep their old style of latch. Also, the plastic joints fail. The first one broke in 1 week! Sadly, this is the only gate I could find that was tall enough to keep my dog from jumping over, and wide enough to separate my dining room and living room (actually, had to add 3 2x4s to one side, because it was 6" too short and I wasn't going to spend $60 to buy another segment). I really like these gates. They are sturdy and easy to set up. They also look nice as well. The gate latch takes a little practice. I love the small door for my cat, keeps the dogs out of her room and she can come and go as she pleases. I had to tie the cat door open but a bread tie works fine. It does the job. I’ve learned that there are surprisingly few pet gate options that are wide enough for my hallway AND include a cat door… at least this one withstands the force of my 70 pound dog when he lunges at my cat. I wish the door swung both ways. I wish it was auto-closing. I wish I could remove the cat door without the use of a saw. I had to rig it open with a hair tie. Maybe other cats are smart enough to open a latch, but mine is not…Steph
I love the gate and it's very easy to put up and it's long enough for the space I needed it for. The only thing that could be better is it's hard for me to open/close the knobs to tighten/loosen the posts to the walls…my husband has to do it for me. This gate is a nightmare to fit tightly enough to hold up to any leaning on it from curious children. Pushing down hard enough to get it in place knocks it out of place during install. The latch to open it sticks, and if I pull too hard I disengage it entirely instead of it remaining in the "remember my preferred width" position. It feels so bendy I worry pushing in hard enough will damage it. It is absolutely not functional as a gate for a determined, walking child. Its one advantage is it's low enough to easily step over and so we barely have to take it out thank goodness, but this would not be an advantage if we needed a proper barrier for a child older than maybe 2? Luckily we just need a gentle reminder they're not supposed to enter or leave that room without us in tow. The description included "secure pressure or hardware mounted gate" when I purchased this item; it is only pressure fit.Halfpint
I’m not sure what product the negative reviews are for (shipping – which shouldn’t even be a review of the product-duh?, flimsy, walls are uneven- seriously?) because it is not this product. I purchased this gate 24 years as a baby gate for my son. And used it constantly over the years for my dogs. I just threw away the 24 year-old gate, because it stopped latching. 24 years!!! I purchased three (3) of the same gate for my new home last month (for the dogs). They are strong gates, I have an Alpha-Female German Shepherd, a Doberman, and a crazy Australian Shepherd You have to push down on the handle, then pull up to unlatch. Not hard- Use a little muscle? Sure. You want that in a sturdy gate. I was looking at this product on here only to find the dimensions (because I didn’t want to get out of bed to measure- it’s 3 am) and saw the negative reviews and thought, “What are you people reviewing – their living room curtains?” I couldn’t stand by and let this happen. Especially when I have purchased this gate so many times. If you are reading this, buy the gate. It’s what you want for dogs or children. Do not listen to the negative reviews, these people are either soft, whiners, or are still having someone else do their laundry for them. I’m from Gen-X. It’s a good quality gate PERIOD.Lori
I love it! It is super easy to open and close. We installed it so that it is hinged. We are able to open it and swing it up against the wall going up the stairway if we choose to leave it open. It is a great way to block off the stairs. I was surprised at how nice it was for the price. It is a very sturdy gate and even the 6 year old can open and close it easily.Jennifer
