I have heard every excuse, reason, scientific data or whatever to try to convince is that these retractable leashes are not good for dogs. That is absolutely not true for my dog. I have a 40 lb Beagle Lab mix and this leash works great for our walks or just sitting around the bonfire. It gives him enough room to wander around yet still stay close. I have never had a bad experience or issue or problem with these retractable leashes I think sometimes the people who say that they are not good are the same people who tell you that you have to buy $100 a bag of dog food or you don't love your dog.Will67

I like the strength of the leash however I am giving 3 stars because the handle is really small. I don't have big hands and it is barely big enough for me- so someone with larger hands would definitely not like this. I also feel like 10 ft is a little short. I like Flexi retractable leash products because they work for me. My dog wants constant and even pressure to 'keep tabs' on me (who's on the leash, and who is in control, here?) Flexi leashes have an ideal spring tension; the knock-off and rip-off models (at Walmart) have too much tension and far less functional locking mechanisms and abominable ergonomic design compared with Flexi leashes. Detractions are that the user can get rope burns from the cord (It's happened to me a couple of times in four years, but my dog is not a puller or a runner (at least while on-leash), and the cord will wear through from friction and abrasion under the collar where the cord is knotted to the snap at your dog's neck. Both of those issues are probably less of a problem with the tape model of Flexi leashes, but the tape model I had was affected by the wind to an extent that neither I nor my dog liked. Overall a good product. Overpriced, but worth the difference due to value and functionality.jimzinaz

Even small dogs can pull hard enough to injure you, particularly because the length of the leash allows dogs to run and build up speed. Follow all of these precautions even with a small dog. Consider Where You Will Go: You can use the flexi retractable leash anywhere you would normally go with your dog. However, the leash is designed to give your dog more freedom while on a leash. For example, if you go to the vet, groomer or any crowded place, you cannot give your dog the additional freedom. You need to have the leash fully retracted and the brake locked. Eye and Face Injuries: If your dog's collar breaks, or if the leash disconnects from the collar, the hook can snap back and seriously injure your eye or face. Always use the enclosed safety collar in addition to your dog's collar to keep the leash from snapping back. Cuts and Burns: If the cord runs across skin, it can cause abrasions (like a rope burn) or severe cuts. Finger Amputation and Fractures: If the cord wraps around fingers or catches on a ring, a hard pull on the leash can amputate fingers. Never touch the cord or allow it to wrap around any part of your body. Falls: Because the flexi leash is longer than regular leashes, your dog can build up more speed and pull on it harder, possibly pulling you to the ground. Injuries to Bystanders: Bystanders are at risk of all of the injuries described in the enclosed pamphlet. In particular they can be cut by the cord if they contact it or if it wraps around them. They might also trip on the leash. Bystanders include runners, people on skates or bikes – Pay special attention to these bystanders as they may approach at high speeds. When around other people or animals, shorten the leash and keep your dog at your side with the leash locked Avoid using the flexi leash near small children, including children in strollers. My dog is 56 pounds and walking him every day for about an hour to an hour and a half, was really hard on my knees. He always wants to walk a little faster than I do. Or he'll stop and sniff and make me wait for him. Now with this leash, he can speed up or slow down and I can keep my steady pace. Best of all, he doesn't put stress on my knees by pulling hard on me. I see another reviewer said his broke right away, and my suggestion would be to buy a leash that rates much higher than the actual weight of your dog. If yours broke, it's because when a dog takes off and runs after a squirrel or skateboarder, the force makes the weight of the dog seem higher. That's why I bought the 110 pound leash for my 56 pound dog. So far, it's holding up great. Only once did he run so hard after a squirrel that the leash pulled out of my hand and went flying. I admit, my 20-ish-pound gremlin didn't probably need me to pick up the L-sized version of this product–but given how it drives me batty how many dog owners in my area (and especially at my local park) just let their dogs off their leash whenever they feel like it, I was determined to not be the That Guy of a dog owner–while also at least having the option of letting my dog roam a bit further afield than a conventional leash, where appropriate. The retraction mechanism in this leash works great, providing dependable and effective maintenance of steady retraction force–enough that the dog knows it's there and the leash is kept off of the ground, but not so much that the dog has to labor mightily to extend it (pint-sized monster or no). The button-slider locking mechanism is great for when you'd prefer that it behave like a conventional leash for a while, limiting your pet to a shorter radius for a time. For those who've never used a retractable leash before, though, be sure to heed the warnings on the package: they are not a fool-proof product (this goes for all items in the category–not just this one), and the possibility of injury if used inappropriately/carelessly is not remote–particularly in the realm of friction burns/edge cuts and tripping. (I haven't been harmed by mine, but there've been a few moments that could've gone sour if I'd not exercised intentional caution.) There are some dogs that also wend around their humans too much for something with tension like this to be a good idea, unless you enjoy taking your walks trussed up like a Christmas duck. All in all, I'm happy with mine. I didn't see the little branded clip-on add-on doodad (for poop bags and the like) available at my store, but that's fine–I am an inveterate wearer of Things With Pockets, so I can manage without. My 10 pound King Charles Cavalier saw a bird and this leash snapped near the silver handle that attaches to dog harness. Luckily near Lake no cars. This is a good quality product from the originators of the extending dog lead. I only use it in safe areas where Im required to keep my dog on a lead, such as nature parks or farmland as it allows some flexibility of movement by the dog. Personally, I wouldnt trust using it alongside busy roads with traffic about because should the mechanism fail the dog could easily run onto the road. Worked fine for about a month, my puppy barely nibbled on it Today I decided to take out my puppy to get some sun, he always gets super excited to go outside. This is a great product and just what I wanted. Our 4 year old black Labrador has been diagnosed with elbow dysplasia and has to have controlled walks. Being on this extended lead allows him to have some freedom when off road. If your dog pulls and is Labrador size and weight, I would probably go for the XL as I struggle to hold him back if he sees a squirrel or rabbit.
