This gate is what we had been looking for for a long time. We had been using children gates but they were too tall. We couldn't step over them and we had to completely remove them to go into another room. With the Carlson gate that is only 18inches tall, we can easily step over this gate to move from room to room. Easy assembly. No screws necessary, but are an option. The main door is a little small but the cat door is big enough for my fat cat to fit through. Overall, I’m happy with this gate and I am purchasing another one for a different room. Fits standard size door but has a small extension if you have a bigger doorway. FYI…No gate extensions available for this model. The lock on the gate is very hard to open and close and you have to get it just right to lock when closing it. And if I'm going to keep complaining, the gate itself is narrow compared to our other walk through baby gate so if Im carrying anything I have to go through it sideways. I have two very active Brittanys who easily jumped a 30-inch child gate at four months of age. My living room is the only room in the house with carpet, and I don't want them going in there during the muddy winter months. The opening is 60 inches wide, and I looked a long time for a gate that would be tall enough to prohibit jumping and wide enough to fit the space. This one does – and it's also the only one I found that doesn't require removing baseboards to secure it to the walls. The pressure-mounting system works great! I ordered this product for my baby boxer puppy to use during play time, potty training, play outside, etc. When i received the product, the box was smashed and ripped in all corners and it had been opened at one point and then taped back up with moving tape. The box is not the issue, as long as the product is in good/functioning condition. This is a quality gate and as another reviewer mentioned, I should have bought this months ago. The gate opens smoothly in both directions, and you can easily fold sections together to fit a smaller opening. I'm using it to help my youngest dog (12 lb puppy) consistently potty outside by creating a small area near their dog door. I moved my chair and computer in that area to keep an eye on things — and she can't sneak off to potty inside. So far so good! We bought 2. They fit where we need them. They keep the dog away from the litter boxes so far. We do not care for the small doors in the gates, though. They swing around when you open and close the main gate. If you have the small door opened in one direction then they hit your shins. In the other direction, they hit the wall or door frame where they are located. So we just removed the little doors altogether (instructions below). Also, we attached a couple of bungee cords to the main gate so that it swings shut on its own since the kids always forget to shut it. OK, maybe I forget sometimes too. Anyway, we're happy now. Our medium/large dog can only stick her head through the small door. My 5-yr-old nephew informed me that his head also fits through the small door. Hopefully the gates just last and don't break down as another reviewer reported…. For anyone who wants to just remove the little doors: Lift the little door up as high as possible on the main gate frame. Use a pair of very thin, precision needle-nosed pliers (I got mine in the jewelry section of a craft store) to reach in and grab the spring-loaded bar as high as possible and pull it down as much as possible. This will not be enough to pop the bar out, though, so you will need to then pull the gate toward you in order to create tension on the bar so it doesn't pop back up. Then remove the pliers and use them to grab the bar at the top again. This time, when you pull down, the bar should pop out from the frame of the main gate and you can then remove the little door. Very easy to install! Works great. We did not screw into the wall, just used the pressure part and it works perfectly. We can open the large gate and we go through with no problems and we leave the smaller pet gate open. We have 2 cats and a brittany spaniel. We needed the gate to keep our brittany spaniel out of the kitchen, but still allow our cats through the gate and this works perfect for that. Our brittany spaniel some how still managed to squeeze through the little pet door so we just tied a tight ribbon in the middle of the small pet door from top to bottom so she can no longer squeeze through yet our other pets can fit through. So keep in mind if you have a medium sized dog like our brittany spaniel they may still be able to squeeze through the small pet door, just tie a ribbon right in the center of the small pet door from the center top to center bottom like we did and they won't be able to.This pet gate works great, wish we had found it sooner!soapnmomof2
Came apart after 2 weeks of use. Cheaply made, looks like small amount of epoxy holding it together when it should have been soldered. First picture is where joint came apart and second one is another joint with a small dot holding it together. Not going to hold up long term. Very disappointed in this brand, I have some of their other gates and they were very well made.Jaime

It would require firing strips with a 39 inch doorway. The construction of the pet gate is also very light and not nearly as hardy as one previously purchased.Johnr314

We needed a way to keep the dogs from getting the cat food and litter, while also giving everyone access to different parts of the house. I put this gate up in my walk-in closet (where I keep my cat's things) and it works perfectly! I had to tie up the small cat door so that it doesn't accidentally close and leave my cat without access to her box, but that wasn't a problem to me. Also, my cat isn't afraid to go through the door which was another concern of mine, but no issues! The silver finish works fine with my off white walls, and it's easy for me to get in and out of my closet daily. I'd definitely recommend!Rebecca

Attention shoppers! Other than one major problem, this is a great product…so far. I received my gates (two) today. They are sturdy and intuitive to use. The doors don't just shut easily on their own, but with a little operator attention they function very well. Now, to the issue: When I unpackaged the gates, the panels on the top of the gates were not wood-grain. I'm not saying I thought the panel would be made from wood, but I thought the panel would have a wood grain design just like the picture shows. It does not. It looks more like a brown leathery design finish. The real problem is that both Carlson (manufacturer) and Petco (distributor) representatives that I talked to said "I am sorry if you are not satisfied with the product." This is an indication that they don't hire people who 1. understand quality control and 2. know how to offer a real apology…and even worse, they don't train their employees on these matters. Petco said I could drive to my local store and return the gates for a refund, but this kind of defeats the purpose of ordering online…and it still doesn't address the absurdity of the issue. If they showed interest in fixing their problem, I would have either not left a review or I would have left a great review. Overall I find the Carlson Pet Products Design Studio Metal Walk-Thru Pet Gate an extremely useful tool for my household. It helps keep our new dog away from our cat's litterbox while still allowing our cat to go about his daily routine. The latch that allows us to open the door without taking the entire gate down is so helpful. My only recommendation is to make the latch for people to walk through more sturdy. If we push on the gate without pulling the latch up we can still get in. If our dog figures this out then the gate does not serve its purpose.Alexander A
I purchased this gate for a room doorway. The gate looks nice with the black metal and cherry wood insert on the top. The gate was slightly bent too wide at the top section of the gate so the gate couldn't make contact with the latch post. I just laid the unit on the side, with the gate open, and GENTLY pushed the opening down. That fixed the distance problem. All the hardware was included, the warranty and the instructions. Super easy to install. The actual width of the top and bottom rail is 27". The 4" extension only makes it 31". These measurements are BEFORE you add the pressure screws. The spacing between the bars fluctuates between 2" and 2 1/4". The pressure screws could be made of a better quality material and not plastic.tctigger645

We have bought lots of gates for our pets that have been awful; this one is AWESOME! It was easy to put together, and I am not a handy person. The space between the bars is very minimal. We have a 2 lb dog and some of the gate bars from other purchases were big enough for her to squeeze thru, not this one! The height is great, short enough for us to step over SAFELY so we do not constantly have to take it down. It is super sturdy. The bumpers on the side allow you to tighten it snug against the wall. At the base of the wall the woodwork is in the way and the width is slightly smaller than the top area, but the option to tighten or loosen the bumpers at different settings make it fit super tight and snug. Our dogs did not like having to hop thru the door at first, but they adjusted; it just took practice. We plan to buy a bigger version of this same gate for another part of the house, and another one for a family member that has pets.jensyorkiegodiva

Overall we’re very happy! The latch can get loose if you don’t remember to lock it all the way into place – our smarty pants figured that out pretty quickly. It was pretty easy to screw in to the walls, although I had to initially pull the rods out to get at it from the right angle. The handle has 2 mechanisms that you have to move to open the gate. Hassle for easy opening. Great for kids or dogs that figure out how to lift the handle. They can’t open it! Pros: The gate opens easily. It’s easy to put together and put up. The pressure feature is great for homes you don’t want to drill into. We use it downstairs. Cons: We have a puppy and her head often gets stuck between the gate and the wall due to the larger opening on the bottom of the gate. We bought 2 of these gates. The gates work, but seem cheaply made. The metal gate and frames are lightweight and not as sturdy as other similar gates we own. These are expandable gates, and although we measured carefully our spaces, we discovered only one gate fit as listed. They come with 2 extension pieces, which offer limited space usage. We had to force the other gate to fit and it is up, but not correctly. We almost returned these but we needed gates and didn't want the hassle. The control that opens the gate is somewhat difficult to use, and if the small bar next to it happens to get in the "lock" position, you need two hands to open it. Our other metal gate opens with a push of your knee against the door – these you need to use your hand to lift up a lever and open the door. All in all, not the best Gates but we are making them work.2dognight
Well made, sturdy product. Door is easy to operate. I purchased 2 gates and was able to interchange the extensions to create a better fit. Tricky part is if you have toe molding when using the twist adjustments. I used 2 felt pads to create a level contact and avoid damage to the wood. You can select direction of door swing to suit your space. Only suggestion to the company, why not make extended gate package in a brown color? Based upon prior reviews, I did not want to purchase wood gate because of the chew potential for my new puppy. Pup is not interested in the gate, which is also a plus to the product.
