This leash has unclipped a few times from the matching collar I bought my dog. The first 2 times I thought I had incorrectly clasped it, however after walking more then half a mile with my dog in a training session I am confident that the leash was clipped correctly. My dog pulled at a bird and the leash came unclipped, leaving me to try and find my dog for more then an hour.. Not sure this is a very safe or reliable product..Lochlann
So dangerous. The clasp has come off multiple times and lead my dog to run off on the road. He’s a young pup so he’s in training and this is absolutely ridiculous! You think you’d have better quality clasp control since the leash was double the price of regular leashes. Very upset about this as it continues to occur. I purchased this collar maybe 3 months ago and the buckle now pops open when my dog pulls on his collar, whether it be on his leash when he sees a squirrel or at the vet while they are just holding him into place. I purchased this collar or one very similar for my dog last year and it ended up rubbing off his hair on his neck area and leaving an irritated raw patch. As a pet owner I was very concerned sense the collar wasn't very tight at all, I don't want this happening to anyone else's baby. I did reach out to Carhartt to inform them of this defect and they seemed concerned and offered to replace it with a better collar. They ended up not replacing it and continued to give us the run around. We also did send photos in to show how harmful it was. Stylish and good-looking collar. Unfortunately, it's not as durable as we had hoped. The buckle/clasp is half plastic and half metal which causes it to fail over time. Ours worked great for a little over a year on our 45 pound hound, and then began to fail if our dog applied tension to it against his leash which would cause it to fall off of him. A local dog trainer was helping me find a product for my pup. I loved the feel of the Mendota leash most, but I was shocked when I received my leash. Hers was thick and felt "authentic." The one I received was thin material, less heavy, and the grip wasn't as nice as the trainer's version. Maybe a change in material happened recently I don't use this leash. This short leash is awesome for working with your dog indoors or in close quarters. The leather ferrules allow you to choke up on the leash even closer. Great if you want to keep your pet close in busy or dangerous situations. Small enough to keep in your pocket "just in case" you need it. Then you can also drop the leash and let the dog wander and it does not get caught under the dogs feet or on any furniture. It stays out of the way. The Mendota traffic leash was recommended by a trainer so I ordered one. I use it in combination with a prong collar with amazing results….the dog is always close to me, lacks runway to rip my arm off when she sees one of her many squirrelfriends, and a simple upward motion on the leash puts the dog into a sit without a verbal command. The quality is great – thick cord, comfortable grip and robust metal hardware. The only issue I have is with that hardware: when my dog shakes (full body shake), the hardware releases from the ring on the collar. Thankfully, we also use a secondary strap, so the dog does not suddenly run free, but this is a bit of an annoyance. I suggest a heavier spring in the hardware.D.L.

It's hard to find a decent fitting collar that doesn't become loose from being walked on a leash or just moving in general. I really like the martingale style. It says put and doesn't become loose. I have purchased a few of the martingale in different designs. The only downfall is that the collars become worn and fade fast. I purchased 3 total collars, one for a rescued mom beagle, and 2 for her beagle/dachshund mix pups which are all indoor/outdoor. The collars have faded and become tattered within a few months. They are either inside, or go outside to the kennel or use the bathroom. They don't go off running in the woods or do anything super crazy. Maybe it's to be expected due to the material it's made from. But paying approximately $15 for a collar, I would hope it would stay in good condition. I just rescued another pup and will probably purchase another for her just because I love the martingale style. So giving it 4/5 stars due to the fact that they become worn and tattered rather fast.Kim
