I love this pad. I've bought numerous brands of pads for my service dogs over the decades looking for the perfect pad and was never happy with what I found until the Highlands Pad. Service dogs are expected to "under" when in public, especially when they're big dogs, so that they're out of the way: under tables, under benches, under chairs, etc. Under is usually a grimy place, especially by the end of the day. My service dog's pad needs to be reasonably comfortable, light in color (so that people, like wait staff can see him and not accidentally step on him) and not retain the debris that was under the table. It also should fold or roll up small compact enough that I can carry in in a small tote with one hand because my other hand is on my dog's harness. It also has to hold up to being washed day in and day out. This pad does all that perfectly. For a pet owner who doesn't necessarily bring their dog out into grimy locations, this comfortable pad blocks moisture (both moisture from the ground if you use it outside or while camping, and moisture from a wet dog or an accident from reaching the floor – within reason). It's easy to toss into a backpack. It's comfortable and warm on cold days. Medium and large are both generously sized. My large GSD curls up to on the medium just fine, although the large fits him better. I use mine virtually every day and although, the pads are rotating through the laundry all the time, they show almost no signs of wear.Lori
I tried out the new Highlands Pad last weekend (with the Highlands Bed). Here is what I liked/didn't like about it and why I only gave it 3 stars. The waterproof base is non-skid and is great if you're using this in your tent. Everyone who tent camps w/ their dog knows how beds and blankets slide around when your dog jumps in/out. My dog is 70lbs so this is always an issue. I actual wish my sleeping pad had this, though I know that would add weight. I don't know however, if the added cost of the waterproof-ness of the base is needed though. Could make it moisture-wicking or just some other kind of moisture barrier w/ the non-skid surface. The fold-ability/compact-ability is so-so… this is specifically coming from more of a back country camper, so I need it to fit easily in my pack and the shape of it when it's folded is pretty awkward. It fits well into the Highlands Bed, but I opted not to do that because the bottom of the bed is just the normal denier fabric, which means it'll slide around if I actually tuck this into the bed. I think one of the improvements they could make w/ the compatibility w/ the Highlands Bed is to put either Velcro or snap hooks on the bed to connect the two. Then the non-skid function, when used w/ the bed, would still be in tact. One of the main reasons I put this as 3 stars is this pad is that the description implies it can be used as a pad for 'around the camp site', but beware that this pad is VERY prone to burn through and marks from the slight fire spark. So this is not campfire friendly at all, which almost defeats the purpose of bringing it with me camping since that is mostly when my dog is lying around with me.Patti P.
This is perfect for travel and keeping my dog off the hard ground. I did not find this to be too thin as others had mentioned. This is not meant to be a fluffy bed, but rather a mat to offer some protection from the ground. It packs down very small and light and the fabric is quite soft on top. This is something meant for daytime use around the campsite or taking breaks on hikes. It is not meant for long-term sleeping. Keep that in mind and this will be a perfect addition for your dog. I am so glad that we got to try this cot out! I have two dogs, a Jack Russell and a chow chow. My dogs did not want anything to do with this dog bed the first day and a half. But then we got the idea to put a fuzzy blanket on it and now both my dogs love it! I can’t blame them for wanting a blanket though, because it is winter in Minnesota currently! My plan for the summer is to put this dog bed outside so I am very excited about that! I think this will be my dogs new favorite spot to lay and look outside. My dog loves this cot and I think it’s pretty great too, especially since she loves it. The only change I would recommend to the company though is for the stuffing in the bolster to be bagged so that the bolster cover could easily be washed. I bought 2 of these beds! The small and the larger. Let me first say this: Zero things are indestructible. If your pet is chewing things up, you’re not doing right by him/her. Its called training and plenty of it. Don’t write a bad review about a great product because you didn’t do your part. These do not have very much padding. My 4 rescue pups do not care for them. I have to flip them over or they won't lay on them. They have gotten stuck in the sleeping bag type pocket and it scared them to death. They don't clean up as well as they should either. Now I do take special needs pups so there can be accidents. My dog is crazy for this bed. I have now purchased 3. One for my bedroom, living room and downstairs office. During the winter I put a quilt in them and the summer when it is warm I take them out. I have 3 regular beds for her that she will not use. She is just 1 year old and a 70 pound English cream retriever who loves to spend a great deal of back time and this cot is perfect. I purchased the first one and was moving it each night because she is crazy for this. We have had no problem with her chewing these or ripping them at all. They all look new yet. She also no longer wants her kennel because she wants her cot. After 6 months she no longer used her kennel, but we do leave her in my office and living room when we go and have had no problems. She is a huge chewer, but actually sleeps in her cot when we are gone. She is crazy when we get home, but I am so happy she is a good girl when we are gone. I believe this bed is perfect for my girl. These beds are very unstable and my 3 dogs will not get on them at all. They just lie down next to them. I have tried everything to coax them onto these beds without success. Each one got on the beds once the day they arrived, the beds moved and wobbled, the dogs leaped off, and none has been willing to try again since. Now I have two folding beds that are essentially useless. Good concept, but the design definitely needs work. This is a great product for outdoor adventures! Now my dog has her own sleeping space when we go camping. It comes in a nice sleeve/case with handle for easy carrying and the material feels relatively sturdy. The zipper feels strong. I got the small/medium and even my 35lb Border Collie mix was able to comfortably curl up inside (although there wasn't much extra room). My $0.02 on the Pros/Cons: Pros: = I know the reflective side is for warmth, but I liked how it made the bag even more visible in low light – this was especially helpful in the middle of the night. = The bag unzips on two sides so it can be opened up all the way to become a pretty decent sized pad or blanket (see photo 2). The zip closure has a protective fabric tab to keep from snagging on doggie fur (see photo 3). Cons: = The handle on the stuff sack is on the side, instead of the bottom of the bag. I don't really get the handle placement since every sleeping back stuff sack I've ever owned has the handle on the bottom to help with pulling the bag out of the stuff sack. This was just a minor inconvenience though. Also, you can't just push the sleeping bag into the stuff sack, the bag has to be rolled up. = I have only had this item for a few weeks and can't speak to its longevity. Other considerations: = I got the Small/Medium size and it was plenty spacious for my 30lb terrier. = This bag is a bit bulky and would best be used for car camping or daytrips.Cynthia
I like how this Backcountry X Petco line has a lot of products to get your pet ready for your next outdoor adventure. Colors are bright and fun. I got to try the pet sleeping bag in size S/M. Size works perfect for my medium sized dog (~21lbs), with some room to spare. At first I thought I should get it in L/XL just in case, but I’m glad I got the S/M instead. When we tried it at home my dog didn’t want to enter inside the sleeping bag, but it works just fine as a sleeping mat as well – you can even unzip the bag and make it an oversized sleeping mat. The thermal inside will keep your pet warm if needed, and the padded exterior will provide a cozy surface for your pet to chill out during the day or when it’s warm. My miniature dachshund would give this bed 5 stars. He seems to settle in immediately when I put him on it (it's a little high so for his 3 inch legs to climb on). I only wish they made these snuggle beds with less of a crease around the inner circle. He will occasionally get his legs stuck in the crease and is unable to pull himself out because his legs sink so far into it.. BUT, I have other Bessie and Barnie beds and appreciate the quality of them all. My dogs love these beds! I don't like the thick furry fabric covers because the furry stuff gets stuck in the zipper when taking it off or putting it back on after washing. The shorter fuzzy fabric works best. I would like to see a filler that could be washed as well but until that day – these are the best beds. I bought this wonderful dog bed for Rosie! I did buy too large but now I am so happy I did. She loves it and now we have a Dolly that I am buying the same bed and same color for her. I had a friend build the platform for the bed to sit on so it looks like a piece of furniture. So nice! I have read reviews that some people are not satisfied. This is our second Orvis bed and I wish I could say I am as happy with it as our first. The first bed was a bolster bed, normal fill (not memory foam) with a grey material that I think is most similar to the "charcoal chev" available today. This bed was fantastic, and despite needing to supplement the stuffing over the years, the material held up really well over years of use and machine washes. I can't say the same for this one. I love the different configuration of the higher "couch" bolsters, but the blue tweed material I picked looks more worn after just a few months of use than our first bed did after YEARS of use and wash. I can't imagine this material will hold up long term at all, it is already very worn, fuzzy and pilled in the entire internal bed area. And this is a bed our dog sleeps in only at night, and he doesn't scratch, dig or "nest" in it at all, just lays in it. Looks awful and really disappointing after the experience of the other bed. Wish I had picked a different fabric – I even had to wait for this fabric to ship, as it was on backorder! Very disappointing to spend so much money on low quality material. This material is not a good choice for dog beds and Orvis should take this option off. That said, I think we would be very satisfied if we had picked a higher quality material like the first bed we owned.anenni
My husband bought this bed a few weeks ago, for the amount of money he paid for it, it should be perfect (like in the picture online). I was scrolling through the reviews and it seems that other people have complained about the same issue. Orvis should listen to the reviews and have this bed made with more fillers. The only reason I am not giving less stars is that the dog really seems to like it and the material and stitching is really well-made and Orvis customer service is very good. We have purchased quite a few items from PetSafe over the years and have always been happy with the quality. The idea of it is cool. Our pup likes to go the park but I always take the older car. The gray color of this is nice and it doesn't look too bad with my new car interior. It secures to the headrest and seats. The bolster is quite firm and supportive but it isn't my favorite PetSafe item by far. While inserting the bolster, my fingers kept poking through the fabric. I've dealt with the same type of fabric before with other beds and never had an issue. Once I got it in there, the zipper was stretched to the max. I was sure it was going to be the first thing to go. It says this bed is machine washable but I wouldn't. The actual fuzzy part of the bed has a cushion you insert too but even with it, there's no "bed" at all really. Very thin materials. It's not holding up well so far. If you have a smaller dog that doesn't move around much in the backseat it may work better. I just don't think it holds up good for big dogs like mine. My wife's car has leather seats and we noticed that the bed slips all over the place. No grippers on the bottom at all. I can't really recommend it.semiller3
This dog bed is great for my Labrador Retriever! She loves to be able to stretch out across the back seat of the car. This dog bed is a great size and it completely protects my seats from her very sharp nails. I love how plush it is and I love how easy it is to secure to the seat. We use to use a sheet on the back seat when taking the dogs for car rides, it would move around and not really protect the back seat. This car dog bed was so easy to install and our dogs love it. Our lab use to always sit the entire time while in the car, the seat part is so comfy that he actually lays down and looks so relaxed now. The seat anchors really help keep it in place and was super easy to clean. Love that you can take the padding out so you can wash it when it gets really dirty.
