Best Clippers For Thick Dog Hair (Jan 2023 Update)

It was hard to pick out a brand, but I finally tried this one. Inexpensive at less than $100, and it cut my fluffy dog's fur really well without feeling like I was raking it through her fur or combing it with the blade. It's not super loud, but it's not whisper quiet. My dog wasn't bothered. Happy with my purchase. I'm not a professional groomer, so maybe there's better out there, but worked great for me!N.D.

I bought these clippers at Petco curbside pickup during the coronavirus quarantine. I have a silky terrier (most people think it's a yorkie) and he needed some "tidying up". I was really happy with the heft of the clipper and all the guards that came with it. After watching the included DVD, I bathed and dried my dog and clipped him. My dog is VERY used to being groomed but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. Other seemingly similar clippers I researched were over twice the price. These clippers are meant for a dog with a fine to medium coat so I think if you buy them for that type of dog and follow the directions (and oil them as recommended) that you will be very happy with your purchase. I purchased these because I am unable to locate clippers for my dog. I did an extensive search and looked at many reviews from several sites. This was the only company that could send these within a week. They showed up in 5 days. I also pulled these from the package and was impressed by the sturdiness of the clippers and how they looked. They are not load and work right out of the box. I oiled them to make sure they would not have any problems as recommend. The video CD is very helpful for any dog. I have a miniature Schnauzer. He was very over grown and very shaggy. Lots of tangles and matting. These clippers cut through all that with no problem. Very smooth and quick cut and not a lot heat from the clippers to make my dog feel uncomfortable. I love these clippers and should have bought a set years ago with the ease of cutting my dog. When covid made it difficult to get my dogs groomed, I tried doing it myself. My dogs did not make it easy. After 3 different brands, i ordered oneisall clippers and it changed everything. So happy with these clippers, they cut so easily, have a fast charge and hold the charge great! They are light weight and perfect for body, face, and feet. I purchased these after reading many different reviews and research on professional clippers to use on my Shih Tzu. She previously had long show coat length hair, and now has Asian Fusion styled cut. Initially, I liked these clippers despite the less than robust power for thick bridle paths. However, they are perfect or were perfect for my Goldendoodle and horse whiskers. Unfortunately, they just stopped. I charged them and nothing…but a new charger, charged them again and NOTHING. They worked for about a year and that was it.MorganGirl

Used on cat. Started by setting clippers on floor and letting them run so cat got more used to noise. Did this several days. Then trimmed a little. Took three days to do back and sides (all I dare do) the first time. He was not so much scared of noise by then, but did not like vibration when touched. He got more used to it all as he was trimmed more and I did most of sides and back in one attempt the second time I trimmed him. Fur looked like child had taken scissors to it when I used the guide comb attachments, so finally used without those and looked smoother. I have a second cat I would not dare trim with these as he is very noise averse. Both are long-haired.Zexia

I’m a professional groomer that needed a quick replacement clipper while mine was in for repair. This clipper is hard to use. The blade hinge is very tight and difficult to open. The blade drive needs to be perfectly aligned to change blades, and can take several tries. I don’t think it was really meant to swap blades. I'm not a professional groomer. I've taken my Lhasa to get professionally groomed for the first 15 years of her life, then the pandemic hit, shuttering her groomer's place of work. After 8 weeks without a haircut, she couldn't see because of her hair and her hair all over was getting out of control. I chose these specific ones because of the reviews and also partially because these were one of maybe two types of clippers left in my area bc all others were sold out. I'm glad I was able to snag these! They worked very well, and didn't get hot (and I was clipping for quite some time since my pup is a wiggler!). The noise wasn't overly loud – it sounded no louder than my ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. My dog didn't mind the noise. They were easy to use after watching some YouTube tutorials. The one downside is the "instruction booklet" was not very helpful. It only contained the standard warnings and some graphics that don't really aid the user in telling me how to remove the blade to clean it (I'm still trying to figure that one out) I would definitely recommend these if you want to clip your dog at home. When I feel comfortable with her going to the groomer again, I definitely plan to take her back to the pros, but in the meantime, these work to carry me over and for in-between visits to the salon.MomOfLhasa

The razor got the job done on my super “hairy/fuzzy” dog. I don’t know her breed but the coat is very thick and matted. I order a different blade, (7 skip tooth), and was pleased. I had to work it a little with an upward motion in the bad areas but it cut through. The only thing I had trouble with was changing the blades. It took me a few tries to get the old blade off but eventually I got it.Theresa S.

Easy to use, clips around feet, face etc. For light duty touch up only, wouldn't recommend using it as a full body grooming tool. Only clips small sections at a time. Quiet, light weight, and easy to handle! These are the only thing I use to clip the insides of ears bc they can easily get the hard to reach areas, and they have much more power than several of the other cordless clippers I've tried. You do have to keep the blade oiled and clean though, otherwise it will get dull very fast. They're also super easy because they only take 1 battery!Smalls12

These are quieter than standard clippers, although not noiseless, and with a few of my horses, these are the only clippers they will let me use. I used them on a 2 year old who had never been clipped successfully, and after letting her listen to them for a minute, I was able to walk up and pet her shoulder before giving her whiskers a good clean up. I love this product, it was the first time I cut my dog at home and I did a great job. Only thing I don’t like is the hair gets stuck in the clipper guards so you have to clean them out after cutting a little bit of hair.octavia

This pet grooming kit is very high end. I think they are higher quality than the human set I have for cutting my husband’s hair! I love that they are cordless and better yet that they are rechargeable! The trimmer is very quiet and does not scare my skittish Jack Russell mix. This set comes with trimmers, the charging cord, a metal comb, nail clippers, rasp, 4 guide combs, two pairs of scissors (regular and thinning), oil and a brush for cleaning and lubricating the blades. I like the unit just fine… It did well on both my dogs and I even used it to trim my hair once. The problem I have with this item is that the cord to power/charge it was missing. Sadly, I didn't bother to check for all the parts until the thing was dead. I grabbed the box to get the cord but there wasn't one. So – Now I have a useless groomer that worked great until no charge. I haven't seen any adapters that look like or list the groomer yet.Brian

Like many Wahl clipper , this is an efficient product. BUT!, i feel this machine heats up a little more than others i used before, and it could feel like it's burning the hand a little, although the clipper still working properly with no fault. Still i must tell that i have an adult schnauzer dog and clipping his hair after many months of hair growing took a long time and finishing was uncomfortable for my hand. I used these as soon as the set was delivered. I used to have to tranquilize my pet before taking him to the groomers; that's why I wanted to give this item a try. As soon as I got them, I gave them a try. The clippers were light-weight and quiet. My little dog wasn't afraid and sat quietly while I clipped him, right down to his underside and toes! He thought he was being brushed out! I just saved myself over $70 a month on grooming charges…he will let me clip his fur as it grows out and I won't have to drug him up to do it. As I get more adept at clipping, no one will know that he is being clipped at home instead of at a shop. I have been hand-trimming him for several years anyway and now I can do the entire job myself. I purchased this for one of my cats who has bad matted fur on her back she was fine with this till I actually tried to use on her I had to have my boyfriend hold her down and I removed one big mat so far and will be trying again tonight. My other cat didn't mind this at all she just laid there and let me shave her she had very little mats in her fur. I do recommend this you just need to be patient and take it slow especially if you have scared cats like I do. I don't know how well it works with the clippers attached I used it without a clipper and went back and forth slowly at the mat.tingargiul_2

This clipper saved me so much money. I had a different clipper that would get hot from the length of time I'd be having to use it because it would barely cut the dog's hair. (I even had the blades replaced) So I decided to buy this clipper and I was amazed at how it cut the dog's undercoat so effortlessly like a hot knife on butter. I was looking forward to this, because of the great reviews. Well, I have the same problems as all the other 1 star reviews. Guess some of us get a faulty one??? My pup’s fur (maltipoo) was freshly cleaned and completely dry and brushed out. I’ve used buzzers on humans before, so I had a general idea of how this should go. Plus i watched a ton of dog grooming how to videos. All this does is take off a tiny bit of fur and then get stuck. Over and over. The hair never falls off, i had to pull it off every time. We tried adjusting the settings, changing the blade covers, using it with no cover, even turning the blade adjusting screw. Even at its highest possible setting (also very loud) it just doesn’t cut. After several 15 minute attempts, we hadn’t even made a dent. She looks the same. Very disappointed.Ellie

After a failed attempt at giving my fluffy cat a buzz cut with regular clippers, I bit the bullet and bought these "pet" clippers. You wouldn't think it would make that big of a difference, but let me tell you, these cut so much better. Using a guard I didnt experience any pulling or snagging and my cat sat comfortably. The only downside was that they did seem to get hot after 10 or so minutes of usage. The noise and vibration didnt scare my cat, but I would recommend turning them on and petting/encouraging your pet before cutting, to give them a few minutes to feel comfortable. These clippers took off so much hair I barely even recognize my cat 😂 lol. I would efinitely recommend these to others as an affordable option for grooming your pet at home.marissa.b

I wish I had read these reviews instead of relying on the Wahl reputation. In my opinion, these clippers should be taken off the market. I got a beautiful clip with my $20 clippers, smooth, professional looking. I decided to invest in this high-end product. The 1st time I used it on my Maltese, it looked as though I'd used an egg-beater. Returned that one, thinking it was a fluke. Same problems with the new one. Uneven, choppy, scraggly. Power button feels as tho will break any time and I won't even take a chance with the battery problems described here. The 2nd set goes back to Walmart and never Wahl again. And no, I'm not bothering calling customer service. I want my $ back and am happily using my $20 clippers.Rita

I have a 30 pound Corgi/Cocker Spaniel mix. His hair never stops growing. I decided to spend the money on these clippers rather than pay a groomer every few months. My concern was that I would have enough power to get through his coat. Using the chart from the Wahl website, I determined that these clippers should do the job. The results from my first effort were a resounding success. First was the sound level test. I dug out some old clippers that I used on my kids hair to compare against the new Wahl clippers. They were noticeably quieter which was important to me as I didn't want my dog to react badly to the sound. He didn't seem to mind at all, even when I was clipping the hair around his ears. What pleased me most of all was the power level was perfect. I had absolutely no problem powering through the thickest parts of my dog's coat. The clippers never bound up or slowed down no matter where I went. Made the job of clipping easy and fast. As to the comfort of the clippers themselves, I had no problem. Without any cord to get in the way, I was able to hold the clippers in any direction whether I was working on the back, or under the belly and chest. I used the longer comb to do the back and rear of the dog, and the shorter comb around his head and ears. When I took my dog in for his next training session, the trainer commented on how well groomed he looked. She was totally surprised that I had done the grooming myself. As long as these continue to perform this well, the money spent of these clippers will be well spent since every future haircut will be money saved by not paying a groomer.Talos

Works well, the combs give an even trim. If your dog has long fur I would recommend using thinning shears first and the Scaredy Cut, otherwise your fingers will wear out before your done. But once your get rid of the long fur it works great tho evenly trim, even with curly fur. The second cut my dog even let me use it on her muzzle which was surprising.dorso2015

I haven't been able to groom my yorkie for 4 years. He gets very nervous even at the sound of scissors cutting. I was able to give him a full groom and the smaller scissors that came with it were amazing! Was so easy to trim around his ears and eyes. There were a few times the scaredy cut scissors seemed to clank together loudly and that made my dog nervous, but he got used to it all of it nd just stood there for me. It was great!xmockingjayx88

The scissors feel very sturdy. The finger/thumb holes are a little small, someone with large hands would have trouble. I found the more I used the scissors the easier and more confident I was in clipping the hair. Don't expect to be perfect right from the start. I would recommend this product.karenm

We purchased this for our plush coat shepherd who needed her bloomers groomed badly. She hates being brushed and had layer and layer of thick hot undercoat. The clippers were very efficient in removing all the hair and we could tell our Lexi felt much better (and cooler) after she was "cleaned up". I must admit I was a bit intimidated as I've never used clippers on a dog, but the guard allowed me to get the desired result, and gave me confidence within a couple minutes. The various attachments allow for flexibility also. I couldn't believe how fast I was done. The clipper feels sturdy and well made. It is a nice kit and I'm pleased with the purchase. The only dumb thing I did in preparing to use it for the first time was; when applying the oil to the blade as it tells you to do (this will make you giggle… as I said, I've never used clippers before) I was following the instructions that say to "OIL for maximum efficiency…Place one or two drops of oil on blades while clipper running" well, I did that but tried to help the oil along by using the little brush provided thinking it would help spread the oil with the clipper running….yeah, you can guess… it started chewing up the little bristle brush. Oops, LOL. So don't do as I did. Leave the brush in the kit till you're done and ready to clean it, oh, and turn it off : )) Duh!! Other than that little faux pas, all was well. My husband and I read all the reviews before buying this and compared it to other clippers sold on WallyWorld's site. I don't know what the issue is, but people (like the reviewer below me) need to watch YouTube videos on how to shave their pet before leaving negative or neutral comments. We have a very long-haired rescue kitty who has to be shaved twice a year due to California heat (and humidity), otherwise the shedding and hairballs are a nightmare. He has an equally thick undercoat, so we had to make sure that whatever we bought came from a good company and Wahl delivers with this. We oiled the blades (which also need to be turned on for 30 seconds or so before shaving). We also did not use one of the guides. And at 3am, most of his hair is in the trashcan. Due to squirming, I had to make several passes in some areas, but this shaver delivered each time. The clippers did not get clogged, and if you realize that shaving an animal may take *TIME*, *PATIENCE*, and possibly a helper, you'll do fine with this set. (I need my husband's help for our kitty's belly and legs.) Our kitty was not nicked by the blades with a very close shave, and the choppy look he has now is the same choppy look he gets from professional groomers because he's got anxiety issues with anything close to him that makes an electric hum. (Gardening or leather gloves can help prevent scratches on hands, long-sleeved thick shirts are good for arm/back protection if you have an animal who climbs—like a frightened kitty.) I would recommend anyone grooming an impatient or anxious animal use a table or leveled area so you don't have to bend in awkward positions. I used our kitchen sink, which is a single long sink from the 50s. No issues there. It just came today, so I can't comment about how long the motor and parts will last, but seriously, the extended warranty is $2.00, and as with all electrical devices these days, it's cheaper to buy the warranty and not need it than it is to not buy the warranty and then have something go wrong. Above all, please remember that animals have emotions and reactions. Be patient, be kind, give praise and treats, but most of all, invest time into grooming your pet. Great size and easy to handle. Love that it is cordless and the perfect size for cleaning up paws and faces. The face that it is battery powered kinda stinks. Wish it was rechargeable. A little noisy too if you pet is sensitive to sounds.Brandie

This product is OK. It isn’t heavy and it is fairly quiet which I like. The dog and cat aren’t fans of it but that is to be expected. This is a good size especially if you’re limited on space or traveling, etc.Kaitlynn

The Oster A6 is quiet compared to the Oster A5. So far it stays cooler over a similar run time as compared to the A5. Maybe the blade on the older A5 needs a sharpening. Though I suspect it will still operate more quietly than the A5.dynamitedavemusic

Great kit! I use it on my parent’s multipoo and moxi with excellent results. The nicest part is it’s not too loud, which the dogs appreciated too. Blade and scissors cut well with sharp blades. The multiple fixtures as well as the shaver itself are sturdy.Lyssa

I groom my moms dog about once a month. I like that these clippers are rechargeable. I do not have to worry about being next to an outlet to groom the dog. I like these clippers has two speeds. The dogs hair is very thick and gets matted easily. So when I get to a matted section I can hit the button location conveniently on the side of the clippers to increase the cutting speed help shave the matted part off.Mae1

This is a definite must buy! I got this for a gift from my brothers standard poodle who takes out to run all the time and play, well it just happened that one day Kole went through a bush of burs and had them stuck all through him and the only way 5o get them off was to shave him because it was so bad. I used these clippers and they are so quiet and just slid right through his fur and some matts he had due to the thickness of his fur with no problem at all. I have gotten 2 seperate sets of these. the first one didnt cut hair at all it just ripped the fur out. i even tried it on myself and it ripped the hair out rather than cutting it. the second pair wouldnt cut with a guard on so when the guard was removed it was cutting fine but grabbed and tore my dogs skin open. whal is a great company but they definitely missed the mark with this onewilliam

To start off, these clippers are very noisy. The on/off switch is stiff and sometimes when I turn it on, it makes a loud noise and shutts off. For some reason the different comb lengths are difficult to get on and off. They cut some of my dog's fur and sone it does not cut. They got caught in a matt and would not cut through it. I had to grab scissors and cut through the matt. They also get hot fast. I followed the manufacturers insteuctions very closely. I should return them but because I have used them I will keep them but I will be going to another store and purchase Andis which seems to be the choice of most groomers. I do not recommend.Gramma

Works good. I tried using a regular clipper and the hair would get stuck on the end. This works great. Just wish it was a little quitter. My cat gets scared of it when I turn it on but after a while, she gets used to it.Paul
