I was a little skeptical about how this would work, but it turned out to be a great purchase! I started out training our small dog to sit inside with the top flap unzipped. I fed him a treat and then released him after a few minutes. Within a few days, he was asking to be put in . Then we started short trips around the house, wheeling it like a suitcase and slipping him a treat and praise every few minutes.he caught on right away and liked how cozy and secure he felt. The only improvement to be made is that when the weather is cold or wet, the lower mesh secrions allow moisture in, splash up from the wheels. I cut the end off a stretchy flannel pillowcase, and pulled it over the whole bag, rolling down the top part so my dog could could see out , but covering the lower half . This worked great! Our dog loves traveling with us, and this is a safe, secure way to take him from car to hotel, crowded areas where he might get stepped on, or new situationscwhen hes nervous. We love it!JayD63

I ordered two of these backpacks, in both sizes, for my two pups, 40 and 60 lbs, respectively. The smaller pack doesn't hold much, some supplies and treats. The Big Baxter I'm able to pack with a day's worth of water for both of them. I love these packs and both dogs are happy to wear them. Kurgo advertises eight adjustment points….USE THEM ALL! Backpacks should fit snug. Loose backpacks sway, which causes chafing. The bags themselves I moved up as close as I could to the dog's spine to avoid unnecessary swinging. I conditioned my dogs over the course of several weeks, increasing weight and adjusting straps as necessary to make sure both stayed well and comfortable, checking for indentions from a too tight pack and raw places from chafing. We found our sweet spot relatively quickly and we've had zero issues with several day hikes. Once it's adjusted, it stays there! They can run and also rest while wearing these packs. One of my dogs has a strong prey drive and this pack keeps her focused and on trail. And while it's important to balance the two sides, a couple of pounds difference isnt a big deal in this pack as long as it's properly fitted. I've used other packs where that wasn't the case, and also packs that needed constant adjusting. I use zip ties to secure the loose length of strap. One of my dogs is a pitbull so has very little hair, and she's had no issues with rubbing or hair loss. I keep medical tape in her pack along with a towel so I can dry her off if she gets wet to help protect her skin, but so far so good! It seems durable, I've seen no fraying or seams tearing. The Baxter Dog Backpack has a been a great addition to Gunny's and My hiking routine. I don't have to carry as much of his stuff into my day pack and that helps me keep up with his high speed pace in little ways. The fact that he can now carry out his own waste, after I bag it, in his own pack is a nice little accent to our trips. Getting the weight right in the saddle bags at the start of each hike takes a bit, but nothing we haven't gotten used to. Along with carrying his own travel bowl he can often carry some of his own water for the day. The sizing and buckle points are easy to access and attach, and he always seems plenty comfortable. The Loop Tackles on the side are a nice aesthetic, in that they look like what is on my own packs, but are not really useful for much since most things I could attach would be so weighty they would immediately put him out of balance. I have made use of them with bug spray spray pens but that's really about it, and those were already on my own gear and hardly impacting my own space requirements. I think if you wanted to loose tie quick access dog waste bags the loops could serve some good use, of course that's assuming you don't access them from a roll already, but I haven't been able to find much use of the cargo loops as of yet. Needed a smaller pack for our shepherd. Picked up the small Baxter. Carries a smaller load well, straps don't cause any rubbing issues on the dog. However, the straps attaching the packs to the harness keep slipping, and the packs drop lower and lower. I cut off the sewn in tabs and doubled the webbing back through the buckle, but they still dont hold. Might have to sew the webbing on. Maybe stiffer webbing and/or better quality buckle is needed. Id give it a much higher rating if there was no slippage. Cant comment on long term durability yet, but three days of with extensive thrashing through Dwarf Birch hasn't shown any obvious wear issues. Additionally, maybe waterproof fabric and zippers could be used?PCYT

Our miniature schnauzer has never liked wearing anything other than her collar, so I was worried that she wouldn't like being strapped into a backpack. To help warm her up to it, we set it down on the floor, and put treats in random parts of the pack. We did that for about 24 hours before ever trying to get her inside it. When we finally did, she was a bit confused at first (after all, she thought it was just a treat dispenser!), but once I put it on and started rolling down the street on a bicycle with her, she absolutely loved it! She pretty much just sniffs at the air the whole time, much like when we drive in a car with the window down. She hardly ever squirms, so I think she feels comfortable. Now that she's had the bicycling experience, if I start to roll the bike without her, she cries with that "don't leave without me!" sound! Now that we've had the Knavigate for about a month, her disposition toward the pack is much like toward her harness – she still doesn't _love_ the process of putting it on, but she tolerates it because she knows she's going to love what's on the other side. One critique I have is that some of the zippers are a bit resistant to closing unless the fabric is pulled out the correct way so nothing gets stuck, notably the largest top opening, but this doesn’t bother me much. The bigger, but still minor, issue is that the sun cover on top rolls away and snaps up quite nicely, but the mesh top has no where to do something similar – my kitty likes to stand and stick her head up while we walk. I end up just having to tuck the mesh between my back and the pack while its already on. Other than those, a really great fit for us!Jaclyn B.
Awesome pet carrier backpack! Super comfortable and supportive. Only issue for me, is it's a little narrow as a backpack carrier for a cat (just because seems like cats tend to prefer to lay or flop). Nice thing though, it also functions as a duffle carrier too. This is a well built, high quality soft sided and airline approved kennel! We used it to fly Delta with my 18 pound male tabby. Delta put us in an aisle seat due to the space under the seat in front of you is higher allowing for a bigger kennel. He had room to turn around and was comfortable for the 3.5 hour flight (talk to your vet about sedation meds, they helped our very nervous guy relax)! The floor pad of the kennel is removable in case of accidents. Inside of the bottom is also reenforced with a wooden board for added strength as well as comfort so the pets are carried evenly. Upon arrival I inspected it and there was something on the inside padding that my dog would lay on. It was yellowish in color as if it had been used. It is great for me because I can carry my kitty on my back and it is great for my kitty because he can easily go into the pack and look out of the vents and see what is going on or lie down and be away from everything if he wants to. This product is of good quality, but it is Way Too Small for my 13 lb poodle! When I zip the top flap closed, his face is smashed up against the mesh, and when I leave it open, he crawls out of it because it is too confining. This might be a good product for a teacup sized dog. Also, the "padding" at the bottom is very thin, so your dog has to sit on a hard surface unless you put your own cushion in this carrier.CaraE
I bought this bookbag so I could take my dog with me on bike rides (he is 4 lbs). It has plenty of room for him and sits comfortably on my back. I tried a couple different styles of packs to carry my Shichon dog Louie with me on my motorcycle. I never felt really comfortable till I found your site. He loves it! He gets all excited when he sees me grabbing it and makes it easy for me to get him in it. We travel all over the place. The pockets are perfect for a bag of biscuits, a collapsible water bowl, a leash and the waste bags. My husband and I go on some longer rides, so we stop, let him stretch his legs, relieve himself and he is ready to hit the road again. Your packs are extremely well made and I really like that the straps securely hold him in. He got a biscuit at a drivethru and I made his picture into a meme. Love the material of this bag. Has a side poop bag holder and pocket for treats. The front zipper pocket is nice for your pets leash, extra treats or other items. I purchased this as an everyday carry bag for my schnauzer. He's currently 6.6 lbs but will grow up to 15 lbs. His sister also a schnauzer but only 5.5 lbs has a champion backpack that has the same structure but is slightly bigger so they'll probably have to swap bags when he's bigger. Like many, I can't say this bag is made for dogs that are anything more than 15lbs and at that its a more snug fit.Yessi92
My toy poodle loved this back pack! (Which is amazing considering she HATES all other carriers) She even gets in it by herself! We took a trip to Los Angeles and ended up using the backpack on our flight back home bc she was most comfortable in it, no troubles it is 100% airline approved we flew with Delta. It is very comfortable to wear the straps and back have padding. Love that you can clip your dogs collar so they don’t jump out as well. We rode scooters and she was chillin in their the whole ride. I always thought a hard side carrier was the only way to travel with pets until I got this amazing backpack carrier. It solves all my pet carrying needs – it holds one of my cats comfortably, two if they aren’t feeling grouchy, and allows them to see out through the mesh without feeling exposed; it has a plush-covered firm base insert that keeps my kitties comfy and from tumbling around; it has storage for treats, small dishes and other necessities; and it is totally hands-free when needed! The shape and size lets it slide beneath an airplane seat, and it has easy access to my kitties as needed. I can take my kitties out on walks and errands to let them get some fresh air, and the backpack is unobtrusive. Plus it looks really nice and is so sturdy. My emotional support cat/ adventure buddy goes on all of our hiking and camping adventures with us. Currently living in Alaska but we do a lot of traveling. He claimed this bag as his own the moment I brought it out of the bag and set it on the floor. He sleeps in it like it’s his own little sleeping bag. And when it’s time for hikes I found that the attachment lead on the inside was still a little too long to keep him from jumping out so I tied a knot in it which solved the problem. He has plenty of room to sit and look out or lay down and hide from the wind when it’s chilly outside. When I don’t tie him down he has figured out how to turn around and stand on the back with his paws and head on my shoulder so he can watch where we are going, and if he doesn’t want to walk he will turn himself around and slide down into the bag, so if I don’t put the rods in place inside the bag I just reach around and hold the back open for him. I tend to keep the rods attached in the back for more stability against my back. I like to do weekend back packing trips and I wish there was some sort of attachment piece that could hold more supplies and clip to the carabiner attachments at the bottom. Over all I love this bag, I find it comfortable and easy to use, instructions for the rod use was attached to the tag. Wish they attached a little better then just those little loops but or like another reviewer said attach on the outside somehow. I did a similar mod so thought I would share what I did. I'm not crafty so it's a little messy, but it works perfectly. I cut a hole in the existing roll-down flap, then used hot glue and double-sided bias tape to attach it. If I were to do it again, I would hot glue the mesh directly to the inside and glue bias tape on the edges outside to give it a finished look. I tried to get a pic of her inside with the flap down but she's black and gray so you can't tell she's in it. I'll probably add a couple very small mesh cutouts at the top of the bag. Took about two hours since, again, I am not at all crafty so went slow because I was convinced I'd ruin it. It hasn't been long enough to know how well it holds up but my dog is pretty chill and it seems very sturdy. Happy modding!Nichol
I bought this almost 3 years ago and have used it so much abs it’s held up like new this entire time. My dog weighs around 13lbs and loves going for rides. Brian is 16, hiking is much slower these days but now he can be included because of this backpack. It’s so comfortable to wear, I have never had any back or shoulder pain from wearing this for hours in a day hiking. I feel confident he’s comfortable the entire hike in this. Would absolutely recommend buying this, worth the cost. I love that you can set the bag down and it holds up or you can lay down as well. Brian is a jack russell and can sit down perfectly fine without being smashed. If you are considering buying this but are hesitant because it is pricy, I’m telling you that you will not regret spending the money on this. Got this for my son to use with his pomeranian pup. It is well made and confy for the most part. I took a turn on our hike using the pac and i did notice that the bottom of the pack does dig into your back a tiny bit. I would roll up a cloth or something for comfort.
