This kennel is strong. The tie-down holes, one per corner, go through both the top half and the bottom half of the kennel, which is an excellent improvement over no tie down holes. Another improvement over the old version is that water cannot collect on top since there are no bowl-like indentations on the top. The door is heavy construction, and can be mounted as Left or Right swing. I put the kennel on the passenger's side of the vehicle so that I can use the empty space behind the driver for carrying a jug of water, leashes, and other stuff. The advertised length is 40", but be aware that the usable length or "inside" length is 33". This is adequate if your dog is 33" or less from the top of the tail to the end of his front nails, while lying in the "sphinx" position. ONE CON: There are no drainage holes in the bottom half. I plan to drill my own (well, get the hubby to do it). A suggestion for the manufacturer: Make a Truck Version of the kennel. It would be the same as this except for two changes: (1) Add drain holes, and (2) Make the top rear panel (opposite the door) from transparent acrylic, so the driver can see through it. This would be a safety feature, as the blind spot would be reduced.Karen
Excellent dog kennel/crate, easy to assemble and relatively lightweight, but strong. Came with extra fasteners for the top and bottom sections, which I have put aside for possible future use. Also has nice hand hold areas underneath the rim on both sides of the kennel for carrying/lifting.

The kennels are made of a cheap plastic that cracked assumingely upon an impact during shipping. Pet mate is replacing unit, however the quality is not that of the unit I’ve had for 10+ years. Although the carrier was more expensive with Hayneedle, I ordered 2 because they prominently advertised that it was the color Bleached Linen and everyone else was showing a two-tone tan and black. I have 2 in Linen already and wanted 2 more to match. The ones I received were tan and black. The carrier quality is fine and up to the standard of my 2 older ones, but these are not as advertised. Great kennel. Even better shipping, came to my house in 2 days after ordering. I wouldn't go off of the weight recommendation when purchasing this kennel for your dog- the XL says for dogs 50-70 lbs and my golden is 60 lbs however my golden although being within the weight limit was a tad bit too long for this size. I did take it back to my local Petco to exchange for a slightly larger size (size 40 inches in length) and the store's customer service was phenomenal in helping me with my exchange. Putting this together – I would say that the plastic is a good construction, the clasps and screws are great, and the metal bars for the windows look to be a decent quality. They ship you extra clips and screws in case you have a problem. I personally don't like the wheels (on any crate), so I'll leave those off and the pet bowl might be okay if I was sending the dog via airplane. The Large size isn't very large in my opinion. A dog should be able to stand up, turn around and lay down. I think this crate is more like a 50 pound max than 75. My 10 week old Golden Female Retriever will likely outgrow this kennel in 6 months and be in that weight range. In a way I'd like to exchange it for a bigger one.RichH

Well, we bought the beige style of this one and it was great. Cats love it. Decided to get the white one.. Terrible craftmanship. This seems like a very nice product overall. However, it has a 9-20 pound suggested weight limit which is published nowhere on the site, so I bought it assuming it would hold at least 25 pounds safely because of its generous proportions. I specifically ordered it because it was an inch taller and longer than most other similar kennels and I wanted to make sure both my cats would fit comfortably in case we have to evacuate again due to the seemingly-annual California wildfires. The weak point of the crate is the handle, which is fairly delicate. It is plastic and only attaches to the metal wire top-load door in 2 thin places. This crate will work in a pinch for double-emergency-cat-moving, but I don't think I could carry it by the handle very many times at full 20 lb capacity before the hand broke off. (Not that the handle is by any means the most important part, as it could easily be replaced by a creative person if it does every break off. However, it's the only part I was unimpressed with, so I thought I would call it out specifically.)The thumb screws are very well done, so top-bottom seam is nice and strong. I will carry it from the sides if we need to evacuate again, but for one cat or very small dog would be fine as a regular vet crate.shellioop
This is the best carrier I have seen. I had ordered it…and then found the rescue I was using transported my kitty in the exact same one. It was super easy to put it together. Less than 2 minutes. My cat is 10 lbs so I went with the 24" as he is still 7 mos old. Plenty of wiggle room. Very sturdy solid crate. In the instructions it says to put the provided screws top down and the black lug nuts provided underneath but the photo of carrier shows different. I agree with photo and put the lug nut on top so they are readily available to ck occasionally if they need tightening. See photo attached. The rescue also had theirs on top like the photo on the carrier. Did not even need instructions it was that simple. Having the two doors is fabulous and will make kitty getting in and out a whole lot easier. I could not be happier with this fabulous purchase. I got this for a ~60lbs. labrador retriever and he seems to love it. Big enough on the inside for him to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably. It's sturdy, but not so heavy that it doesn't move around a little bit when he changes positions. It was easy enough to put together. A couple of the plastic screws didn't seem to have the ends filed off all the way (hard to describe but basically instead of a flat end, the plastic stuck out a little extra on one side instead of being flat across), which made them harder to fit straight through the holes in assembly. Fortunately, they send a few extra, so I had enough that were straight enough to put the crate together. The sizing recommendation by the manufacturer seems to be off. Dimensions are not the actual dimensions if you were to take a measuring tape and measure yourself. For my 55 lb border collie mix who sits at 27 inches tall and stands at 37 inches long from nose to base of tail a large would not fit. I ordered the XX Large and that is a way better fit where she can actually sit without being hunched over. This was purchased for air travel as well so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The material seems relatively durable but it did arrive with a large crack so I will be exchanging. Compared to the Petmate Sky Kennel, this kennel seemed a little bit thinner in material and not as study. However, I order a Sky Kennel in a size Large so perhaps a sizing difference might have affected this. Most of all, our dog took to it the first time. We had the S, same company. Uma is getting big now. Of course, we chose the same company and same product, just L in size. When a puppy, accidents do happen. It is easy to clean. Uma is about 20lbs now and can stand up in the kennel. Still plenty of height room. She may become 30-40lbs and this kennel will be all we need. Our use is for nighttime and when we go out. We have the gray which does not stand out. Two years ago we purchased this carrier for transporting our cats. After only a year the top split. The handle was useless. Another option was to use the shoulder harness. The rings broke through the plastic. A 16 pound cat could not possibly be the reason this product failed. I give this product a rating of zero. I needed a carrier for my grandsons' kitten. I also needed a place for her to sleep. I had looked (on-line) at several "pet," stores that had the same product. But they were 30 miles away, and you had to purchase in store! I purchased this one on-line with next day delivery. Even with tax, shipping, and handling it was CHEAPER than the same one, which was at a store 30 miles away. ONE WORD OF CAUTION. The back of the carrier snaps together. It has 2 tiny matching holes on the top and bottom. It would be great if they supplied a fastener. BUT IT CAN EASILY BE MADE STURDY AND SECURE FOR PET SAFETY – WITHOUT FEAR OF COMING APART. (Especially if the pet is rambunctious!) I used small zip ties – very inexpensive, that I already had. I trimmed the ends after putting them on the back sides. The door in the front is secured at top – 2 and bottom – 2. Plus you can open it from either right side or left. It has plenty of openings at the top of the carrier for air to circulate. I definitely would recommend this product. "Alice," the kitten loves it. I leave the door open, and she goes in there during the day and sleeps on her towel. It's light weight, attractive, easy to carry, easy to assemble, and definitely easy to clean. Even with the lack of the 2 back fasteners, I still give it 5 stars. Great sturdy carrier,bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside. Sturdily made plastic. I use it to carry for my 9 lbs cat and it can support his weight very well ,even though it could have had a luggage style handle for more comfort holding it than the recessed one it has but no biggie. Also even thought it is sturdy and pieces fit well together I would recommend you tie up some zipper cable ties on key areas where the two halves meet and close to where the gray little pieces go, to avoid the unions popping open and falling apart,just in case it stresses from the weight of the pet, that should give more reinforcement to the structure and peace of mind, not that it will happen but it could as other customers have stated. The carrier is not really that tall and long so my cat cannot stand full height or stretch full length, it is comfortable enough for him to be in on short trips or for a shorter cat (mine is very long and tall,almost 19 inches long head to base of tail).. The door is a little tricky to use since it doesn't have a hinge but you will get the hang of it, and if you just open it from one of the top knobs and leave the other closed it can even be used as a swinging door. I got this yesterday in a pick up order. When I got home and put it together I noticed that one of the post for screws was broken. I was able to still use it instead of dragging it back to the store for a return. But I’m disappointed because you pay almost 100 for something that is already damaged. This crate was amazing for the first couple of weeks. Then our small mixed breed power chewer with separation anxiety was able to chew 2 large holes in the side of it. He's only spent about 40 hours total in it. I dont work, so he only spends a couple of hours at a time on the weekends in it. The rest of the time, its just his "bedroom". One of the holes he chewed is large enough foe him to stick his head through. Looks like we will be looking into the gray ones with the really small holes and military grade plastic. IF YOUR PUP IS A CHEWER AND HAS ANXIETY DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS CRATE. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO EAT EIGHT THROUGH IT. My GSD pup is crate trained. I purchased my first PetMate plastic crate in 2004 and never had an issue. When my GSD got too big for his wire kennel, I upgraded the size and got a PetMate Ultra (for its airline approved status). For three solid nights and any day time crate use highly distressed my dog. No one in the house slept. He was quite agitated (barking, clawing at the crate bottom, etc). He could not sleep or lay down in the crate. On the fourth night, I put him in the crate with the same result. Ten minutes later, I took out the old 2004 crate (flat bottom, no injection mold markers) and popped him in it. He sat down and gave the biggest sigh. I finally understood he had been in distress because of the new crate. On inspection, I discovered these round things under the bottom, pressed into them with my forearms and immediately felt the pressure points/pain. Who thought this design was a good idea? Did PetMate even try it? I beg designers to sit in it, lie down in it, press their forearms on to these circle things. Question your motives. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a cheap excuse and terrible quality. I’ll be cross-posting this comment on multiple pet store sites. I’m so unimpressed with this design. The incredible distress my dog endured because of shoddy design is unacceptable. PetMate needs to do better for the pets you aim to help. PetMax shouldn’t sell this product; they should ensure the pets they serve do not experience stress or injury.Ginn

I was appalled at how much pet carriers cost in pet supply stores, so I decided to look here, and the price was much better. I have two cats and a large carrier for both of them, but most often they go to the vet one at a time, so I wanted a one-cat carrier. Possibly I should have gotten a size up from this, as it's a rather snug fit for my 10-lb kitty, but it's a lot easier to transport. Unlike my larger carrier, this one requires actual nuts and bolts to hold the top onto the bottom, so it can't be latched open from the top. The door also takes a little jiggling to lock all the way, though it opens in both directions or can be lifted out completely. The construction is quite solid, however, and it worked just fine on my last trip to the vet. Just keep in mind that it really is for SMALL pets. #sweepstakesSallie G

I read reviews before buying this, and a lot of those reviews stated that their dogs tore this kennel apart. But I thought my dog shouldn’t have a problem with that because she is crate trained. As a matter of fact she went into her old kennel willingly without anyone asking all of the time. It was her safe space I think. Never tried to break out. But the thing with this kennel is the material that it is made out of is weak and if you’re a pitbull, very soft. My dog chewed the bars out with ease and the fake wood was like bubblegum to her. This is a very large kennel. It's perfect for a German Shepherd, Husky, Lab size dog etc. Very easy to assemble. The door works flawlessly. I got this because I have 2 senior dogs a Retriever and a Collie mix and needed something to secure them in the back of my suv when taking them to the vet or groomer. I found that it is much safer to transport them this way than to let them be on the back seat unsecured. I finally have the right size kennel to do so. Midwest had several levels of crates but I have found that you cannot go wrong purchasing the Lifestage's model. They are solidly made and last forever. I always purchase the double door crates. They have cheaper models & more expensive ones too. I would not recommend their icrate as they are cheaper but they are also not had solidly made as the Lifestage's. Spend the extra $10-$15 and purchase the Life Stages model. It is well worth the money. I have had great success purchasing there crates at Petco.com. I always receive my items within a couple of days. It is also nice when you have a Petco store nearby where you live. If you have any issues with the merchandise you received, they have always been very accommodating and made sure they did whatever was necessary to correct the problem, return the merchandise at a full refund and/or replaced the item. I just received this crate a couple of days ago for my Saint Bernard mix pup. The size is perfect and he has tons of room to grow in it. The doors latch nicely and the crate is very sturdy. We received this very fast! The only downfall I had with this purchase was that when we removed it from the box and set it up, there was a decent sized crack (all the way through) on the tray. I won't be replacing the tray as I've spent enough on this crate. And fortunately for me, my 5 month old pup doesn't have accidents in his crate, but I'm sure if others received this, they would not be happy.tsjackie
I had been looking at the end table style crates thinking that would look nicer and less bulky then the 4' x 4' X-pen I have in my living room. But, comfort is the main criteria and I wanted my Whippets to feel they could stand and dig through a deep pile of bedding, so I went with this crate. I like to rearrange the furniture so I bought the double door style to keep my options open. For my two Whippets I bought the 42" x 28" size which has been more then enough room for them to lay side by side or end to end. It arrives flat, but you just fold out the sides and it is ready to go. It came with a handle so it could be 'portable', but at this size it is heavy and I don't plan to take it anywhere, so I didn't attach that. I left the X-Pen up for them while they made the transition, but they hopped into the new crate the minute I put it up and haven't been back in the X-Pen (even though it still has more bedding in it). The black wire instantly looked better then the metal of the X-Pen and I'm staining a piece of wood I put trim molding around for the top (I had it cut to size at Home Depot) so I'll have an end table style look, but the height and comfort the pups want for their 'cave.' Very happy and buying a second one to have at the office for the days they come to work with me. Both crates and the wood top are costing less then the end table style crate, so all three of us are happy!psh1

Any metal kennel, regardless of how indestructible it has advertised to be, we have come home to a scraped up bleeding dog that is out in the house and destroying things. She is a pitbull and she chews through anything. The kennels that are plastic with the metal grates on the side she chews on the door and breaks the metal on the sides and at this point has ruined her teeth. We have put her in the Ruff Land Performance kennel twice, once for two hours, great success and once for an entire day. She was calmer, and no blood or destruction to the crate. Wish I had seen this crate 9 years ago. Another feature we like is that it has a flat floor, rather than one that is either metal grating or has a few round circles protruding to allow stacking of kennels. We are amazed and so thankful to have this crate. I would recommend this crate to any dog owner. I can't say enough good about it.Diana B
We tried the reinforced wire crates with no success. If he could get out, he would. The next step was possibly getting those ultra reinforced crates that cost almost a thousand dollars and almost require financing. This has been the perfect compromise. It’s sturdy and durable. It obviously has a little weight to it, but it’s definitely manageable. Hands down if something happens to this crate that isn’t caused by our dog, I’ll buy it again and again.Jennahboo92
My chabrador (chow-labrador mix) has plenty of space to turn around and lay down in this kennel. He is kenneled while I'm working, and he easily goes to lay down when it's time for me to leave in the morning. At night and on the weekends, my rat terrier likes to claim this kennel as her own spot. Very sturdy and fairly light weight. Not too wide, so it's easy to find a place to make space for this kennel.Shane
