Dog Traumatized By Crate For Sale (Feb 2023 Update)

Purchased 2 of these kennels after using a pet mate sky kennel for years. Received one of two broken during shipping. The kennels are made of a cheap plastic that cracked assumingely upon an impact during shipping. Pet mate is replacing unit, however the quality is not that of the unit I’ve had for 10+ years. I guess in retrospect, I should have spent more to get the sky kennels in hopes price would dictate better quality.Cavalier owners

I bought 1 for my English Bulldog and this is a very nice sturdy beautiful cage! I am going to buy another 1 for my 2 little dogs! Beautiful in a livingroom! Well worth the $$$Amy

Well, we bought the beige style of this one and it was great. Cats love it. Decided to get the white one.. Terrible craftmanship. The top part leans and will not get any tighter..Posts are not as thick as the beige one. The beige came with a hanging mouse and rope, the white one does not. I honestly don't even think they are the same manufacture..Youngmawmaw

Truly a nice furniture kennel. Bought it without reviews, so took a chance. One of the containers was destroyed in shipment, but it’s packed with styrofoam all around so no damage! The locking mechanism seems sturdy. The bars seem sturdy. The boards are strong. The instructions are pictures, but easy to follow along with. My dogs are well behaved in kennel, so not sure how it will stand up with one who’s not. Overall, I’d recommend it!MML

This kennel looks great in your home. It’s much more decorative than a traditional crate. And for the price of why not? Well that’s easy. It’s not as functional as a traditional kennel. I read reviews before buying this, and a lot of those reviews stated that their dogs tore this kennel apart. But I thought my dog shouldn’t have a problem with that because she is crate trained. As a matter of fact she went into her old kennel willingly without anyone asking all of the time. It was her safe space I think. Never tried to break out. But the thing with this kennel is the material that it is made out of is weak and if you’re a pitbull, very soft. My dog chewed the bars out with ease and the fake wood was like bubblegum to her. I love this kennel because of the way it looks in my room but for how strong it is NOT, it is incredibly over priced.BrianaL02

I love the small "escape proof" crate! Its a gem! The price is great especially with free shipping! my chihuahua figured out how to escape from her other crate and caused a huge ruckus in the apt complex. I cant say just how much this crate means alot to me and the neighbors (elderly). My longhair, chihuahua absolutly LOVES it!! Thank you even more for a quick delivery from Fed Ex. Very good quality. Packed very well. Exactly what I expected. Liked the fact there's only a removable plastic bottom and not a fixed wood bottom. Makes it lighter and easier to move and can remove plastic tray and put your dogs Favorite blanket and/or bed. I actually bought two and both of my dogs love them. One dog is a Whippet/Hound mix about 40 lbs 2' tall x 3' long she fits fine. Other dog is a Labradoodle about 50 lbs 18" tall x 28" long, stocky and he loves is it.MarMay

I like this product, except our small dog can push the double door and while they don't open, they bow out. It needs two things. magnets to hold the double doors open when they are not closed, and something at the top of the double doors to hold them tightly closed. Otherwise I love it! My husband is very handy and will make a latch for the top of the double doors, and put some magnets on the side to hold them open when not in use.Robbi C

This kennel will work for now but I fear over time that the weight of a dog laying against the side of it will make it fall apart. Easy to put together…the screws are literally plastic. When I searched for “wooden dog crate” this came up and I purchased it but it’s not wood lol.PorshaPants

Not quite what I expected based on the price. . . I was expecting more of a Trex like material based the price and description however, it is just a heaver plastic with a wood like graining to it. Overall pretty nice and I do like the metal rails. Assembly was very quick and easy (although probably would have been quicker not to try and decipher the directions) A vast upgrade from the ugly basic metal crate.Nick in FL

I bought 2 of these to use as bedside tables. My dogs and cats like to lay in a crate. This would would not work if you had to crate your pet to prevent destructive behavior, it would be very easy to chew through. I also like that it is plastic as I have older animals who have accidents sometimes so it will be easy to clean! Looks very nice as well! Easy to assemble but the instructions could use some work for people who dont often assemble furniture. Also the holes for the lock were not drilled correctly on mine, they were about 1” too close together so I had to drill 2 of my own.Rachael

Has been working great for our springer spaniel. Got the extra large so she would have room and not feel cramped. Using as end table next to bed. We know our pup is safe in this designer style crate.Lynn

So disappointed. Would give it 5 stars for the look; however, buyer beware, the dimensions are WAY off! Measured against our old metal crate and the large Ecoflex measured slightly larger based on dimensions. Put it together and it is much smaller than our old metal crate 🙁 Would recommend product for its look if you have a smaller dog (not like my 75 lb pyr/golden mix).Laura

terrible! did not last 16 hrs literally . my puppy was able to chew thru it in no time at all . maybe it's my fault I should have just went with metal and not something nicer looking . I was under the impression this wasn't just wood and would sustain some scratching nibbling but as soon as I put it together I knew it was a mistake (screwing some of sides in by hand and being able to see it just is cheap) for it being this expensive I would expect better quality!Brian

First a foremost, I was really upset that I had to shell out over a hundred bucks for a dog cage. But since we have a brute escape artist that kept destroying her old kennel and hurting herself during the process. With this kennel, it has stopped all escapes, no signs of giving or stress. She's made it her home even when she doesn't need to be there.it comes with removable caster wheels for easy relocation, or take them off and leave it stationary while cutting a few inches off the overall height,The door is easily removable and attaches back on in a matter of a few seconds. We were worried about the meshed ground and her getting her toes caught in it, but I comes with a removable tray that's meant for the bottom, but we placed it over and that's her floor. We are thoroughly pleased and happy with this purchase.If you have a problem with escape artist using brute strength, then this is you best friend.DBotDan

The tree is just a tad under 5 foot. Not a problem for our little living room. The LED lights can be very bright–but you can unplug the LED lights! It still has 8 different light mod's even with the LED's unpluged. The longer branches on the bottom will not hold heavy ornaments. Light weight ornaments and garland is fine. It really is pretty even with out ornaments. The fiber optics make it a very colorful tree, even in the day time. The LED's are to brite for our liking. Not a problem for us we just unpluged them! Hey it's a 60 dollar tree. We are happy with it. You will have to fold down all of the branches they are not hinged like some of the higher dollar trees. It filled out nice! It is perfect for us now in this smaller house.darrel-texas

Poor Quality, for the price of this crate I expected it to be easily put together. I had to drill new holes because they didn’t line up. The latches interfered with the closing of the door. The door was not centered correctly and required lifting to shut properly. Arrived bend.Avgjoe

If you are needing to purchase a new dog crate, this is the brand and model I highly recommend. Midwest had several levels of crates but I have found that you cannot go wrong purchasing the Lifestage's model. They are solidly made and last forever. I always purchase the double door crates. They have cheaper models & more expensive ones too. I would not recommend their icrate as they are cheaper but they are also not had solidly made as the Lifestage's. Spend the extra $10-$15 and purchase the Life Stages model. It is well worth the money. I have had great success purchasing there crates at Petco.com. I always receive my items within a couple of days. It is also nice when you have a Petco store nearby where you live. If you have any issues with the merchandise you received, they have always been very accommodating and made sure they did whatever was necessary to correct the problem, return the merchandise at a full refund and/or replaced the item. I have been very happy with Petco and the merchandise I have purchased!!!Shari L

I just received this crate a couple of days ago for my Saint Bernard mix pup. The size is perfect and he has tons of room to grow in it. The doors latch nicely and the crate is very sturdy. We received this very fast! The only downfall I had with this purchase was that when we removed it from the box and set it up, there was a decent sized crack (all the way through) on the tray. I won't be replacing the tray as I've spent enough on this crate. And fortunately for me, my 5 month old pup doesn't have accidents in his crate, but I'm sure if others received this, they would not be happy.tsjackie

I had been looking at the end table style crates thinking that would look nicer and less bulky then the 4' x 4' X-pen I have in my living room. But, comfort is the main criteria and I wanted my Whippets to feel they could stand and dig through a deep pile of bedding, so I went with this crate. I like to rearrange the furniture so I bought the double door style to keep my options open. For my two Whippets I bought the 42" x 28" size which has been more then enough room for them to lay side by side or end to end. It arrives flat, but you just fold out the sides and it is ready to go. It came with a handle so it could be 'portable', but at this size it is heavy and I don't plan to take it anywhere, so I didn't attach that. I left the X-Pen up for them while they made the transition, but they hopped into the new crate the minute I put it up and haven't been back in the X-Pen (even though it still has more bedding in it). The black wire instantly looked better then the metal of the X-Pen and I'm staining a piece of wood I put trim molding around for the top (I had it cut to size at Home Depot) so I'll have an end table style look, but the height and comfort the pups want for their 'cave.' Very happy and buying a second one to have at the office for the days they come to work with me. Both crates and the wood top are costing less then the end table style crate, so all three of us are happy!psh1

My husband and I got a puppy from the pound. She was only 2 months old when we brought her home. Using this crate for the first year help us keep our home intact! she would only be put in the crate when we were gone, that way we knew she was safe and not getting into trouble chewing furniture or peeing in the house. those two door design is fantastic! So easy to get them in and out. She loved her crate like a second home. We added blankets and toys, food and water and there was plenty of room for our little Savannah….even now when she weighs about 60 pounds she still fits comfortably.jay.m

I have two of this size (one door model). I have had these things for ohhh, 10 years…I raised three rotty's in them and kept various rescues of all animal kinds in them until I could get them off to rescue people over the years. They did duty in the barn area for poultry for most of the last 6 years and got messed on all over the place, were damp in the winter and were used like tables with a board on top. Ended up with another rescue that might stay…looked at em all poultry encrusted and dusty and cobwebby and shook my head thinking they're done. They have been through the wringer the last 6 years. I realized I really don't have the money to buy new so decided to try to clean them up as a futile attempt to not have to buy more. I had to at least try. 2 hours ,a bucket of warm soapy water, a scrubby , washcloth and a hose later…OMG. They cleaned up GREAT. The handles of the latches were slightly slightly rusty here or there where the black coating flaked off (about the only place it has flaked off and then only small spots), the metal tubes that connects the panels together a little dull, pitted and slightly rusty here or there and that is IT! They still work just fine and they look award winning good considering where they have been. If not for the latches and the connector pieces they could pass as gently used items despite what they have been through. So essentially, if you want a solid, quality crate that is priced reasonably and WORTH every darn penny….go with precision crates. One precision crate could very likely last you all of your adult life if you stayed with the same size dog. As it is now we have the two x lrgs, 1 mediumish, and 2 for 30 lbs or less dogs. And because I am so impressed with what I have,….I'm going to be buying this X-lrg 2 door version to fit in a spot where a single door crate won't work in my house. Remember- Don't throw away an extra crate that is in working order, donate it to someone who can't afford a crate or find a rescue group that needs it (crates are good for lots of different animals).Windchyme

Finally, after buying several different brands that boasted 5-stars ratings and returning each one because of its sharp, unfinished wire ends/edges, this one arrived! No sharp edges! More expensive than others, but if it saves me from a vet/pet hospital visit because a wire stabbed my pet, it is well worth the money! Feels heavy and sturdy; but still portable.Arno

I bought the medium size crate for my husky/pit bull mix. It got here super fast and was undamaged. All the parts fit and instructions were easy to follow. I was glad it came partially assembled. I put it together by myself and that is saying alot, because as a 60 year old woman it was pretty heavy! I did zip tie the top shut and also use a plastic coated tie out cable to reinforce the door. I was unsure the locks would remain shut if he wanted to get out. My dog seems to appreciate the space inside the crate. I was worried about the floor wiring, so I put a thick, flat quilt in there to cover it. I have been using it for 5 days and so far, it has been good. I am happy he has more space and the strength of the crate seems to be good. I suppose we shall see over the long haul, but at this point, it's working well. I would recommend this product to anyone and I'm saving up to buy 2 more for my other big dogs. It gives me peace of mind to know he is safe, comfortable and contained when I have to leave my home.Tina C.

I wish this was the first crate I bought for my dog. She wrecked 2 of the wire metal crates and even escaped from one. I have no idea how she damaged the other crates without hurting herself in the process. NOW! I do not worry about that. She tries to chew on the bars but only manages to peel some of the dark coating off. She is 60 lbs and she shuffles her bedding around a bit but she can not bend the bars or move the placement of the crate in any way. Two of the bars were bent during shipping so one of the screw placements does not align. But that has not decreased the integrity of the crate at all. This crate has made me a lot more relaxed to know that when I leave the dog is safe. It's also really easy to collapse and fold up and to add or remove the wheels. I'll be traveling with the dog and the crate shortly and am confident that it will be easy. Thank youMega

I purchased this kennel five years ago. When I rescued our Border Collie they told me she would escape every kind of kennel. And I thought, “She won’t break out of a metal kennel.” Well, she tore through two metal kennels, bent them beyond use, and hopped or walked them across rooms!! So, I began the search. I bought this steel kennel, with two action locking, and “Bailey” could not get out of it! She had a horrible first year of life and now we have been loving on her for five years. She is still afraid of men. And now Bailey uses her steel kennel as her “Safety Place”. If we have company over or a repair man come in, she “tells” them what she thinks, Ha, and then retreats to her kennel. We just returned from a 42 day vacation where we slept at different KOAs and hotels and the kennel came with us!! We simply loaded it in the back of the truck and she knew she was safe everywhere we went. It’s on rollers so no problem getting it in and out. I have the 36” size. I’m a lady, 5’3”, in my 60’s and I can handle moving the kennel. It’s a bit heavy I admit, but once it’s on the ground it rolls like a charm. Definitely worth every penny!Debi C.M.

We have tried many Kennels/Crates for our dog, she suffers from Anxiety and nothing has kept her as safe as this kennel. Any metal kennel, regardless of how indestructible it has advertised to be, we have come home to a scraped up bleeding dog that is out in the house and destroying things. She is a pitbull and she chews through anything. The kennels that are plastic with the metal grates on the side she chews on the door and breaks the metal on the sides and at this point has ruined her teeth. We have put her in the Ruff Land Performance kennel twice, once for two hours, great success and once for an entire day. She was calmer, and no blood or destruction to the crate. Wish I had seen this crate 9 years ago. Another feature we like is that it has a flat floor, rather than one that is either metal grating or has a few round circles protruding to allow stacking of kennels. We are amazed and so thankful to have this crate. I would recommend this crate to any dog owner. I can't say enough good about it.Diana B

We tried the reinforced wire crates with no success. If he could get out, he would. The next step was possibly getting those ultra reinforced crates that cost almost a thousand dollars and almost require financing. This has been the perfect compromise. It’s sturdy and durable. It obviously has a little weight to it, but it’s definitely manageable. Hands down if something happens to this crate that isn’t caused by our dog, I’ll buy it again and again.Jennahboo92

My chabrador (chow-labrador mix) has plenty of space to turn around and lay down in this kennel. He is kenneled while I'm working, and he easily goes to lay down when it's time for me to leave in the morning. At night and on the weekends, my rat terrier likes to claim this kennel as her own spot. Very sturdy and fairly light weight. Not too wide, so it's easy to find a place to make space for this kennel.Shane

We introduced the crate that same night and our pup was drawn to it. Everyone slept great! Our pup isn't afraid to go in at all. Few things I notice that this crate does well: 1) noise of the crate is soft when the pup pushes on it rather than the typical crate sound where it creates your pup to be anxious 2) Spacing of the holes are good enough for pup to see and reward it with a treat 3) Got the mint color and it brings such a calming vibe – aesthetically pretty too. Would liked to have: A divider and maybe the top to prop open. Customer service: They're quick with same day replies. We were worried our pup would not have his crate in time but they ensured peace of mind every step of the wayMichelle

A good product The Kindtail Pawd is exactly what I wanted in a crate. I wanted something much prettier than the the wire crate, but also quite simplistic and light weight. Some other good looking crates out there are either super heavy, bulky, or have too many unnecessary features for me. I love that the Pawd is truly portable, but still quite sturdy. I appreciate that all the connecting joints of the crate were smooth and fit perfectly together, without having to force pieces together, which shows me that attention to detail was put into the design and execution. I will say that I only bought the Pawd after my dog became full crate trained, and is no longer trying to chew through and escape her area. I don't actually use it to contain her with the door (which very nicely folds completely out of the way), but only as a nice den for my dog to chill in, so I can't speak to its ability to actually keep a dog inside. Like any other plastic crate, I suspect it would not be able to withstand aggressive chewers. I think the price is reasonable.Dee T.

A miracle! When we rescued our 5-month old pup, we were told she was crate trained, but when we brought her home to a generic metal wire crate she refused to go in it let alone rest or sleep in it. She was particularly sensitive to the sound and it was a constant struggle that felt like punishment for her. We hoped the Pawd we purchased would be more appealing to her, but we never expected what actually happened. Only minutes after unpacking the Pawd and Lounger, she walked into the crate on her own and laid down (see photo). It's a miracle. Our pup now has a cozy place of her own and we couldn't be happier. The medium size I got was a lot bigger than I thought which is a wonderful surprise. I’ve split it into 2 and the double doors make it possible. I am currently training my little pup to use the other side as a bathroom as he weathers his first Chicago winter. Love it! And the great thing is the large window on the side is able to be tucked in the top to keep one side always open. The other smaller door doesn’t tuck on the top but that doesn’t bother me because that door is against the wall and not an issue at all. Quality seems great. Have had it for a few weeks and I love it. And so does my lil 10lb pup in his medium crate (but it’s large for him!). He goes in and out a lot more than his old one and I attribute part of it to the double doors! Works like a 2-room apartment for himJennBearDem

I love Petco. So sorry I can’t give this kennel a 5 star rating. Love the style. Purchased “large” size for 40 pound female lab/hound mix, 17 months young; fit perfectly (even 75 pound male “cousin” slept curled up a couple of times, for novelty). She’s not perfectly kennel/crate trained. Visiting our daughter & didn’t want dog to run around unsupervised. 1st time used kennel successfully for a few hours. 2nd time unfortunately used a lot longer. She was observed on camera chewing/pulling on rear end and pushing way out of bottom (latched) small front door. She got minor abrasions on cheek and paw; was a TIGHT SQUEEZE out. MOST UNFORTUNATE! Ughhhh; other purchasers had reported wire weaknesses, but I truly wanted to believe that my dog wouldn’t be strong enough. I will talk to customer service now. We know now what’s possible… Recommend with reservation; depends on dog, really.Tuggisfun

We have a growing 7 month-old newfypoo so needed to upgrade our crate to a larger size. I chose this crate for 2 specific reasons: #1, the height and #2, the top-folding door on the side of the crate. My newfypoo needed the additional height so he isn't hunched over if he's sitting up. The height on this size has given him an inch or two of extra clearance and should still work when he's done growing. For the 2nd point, I LOVE the top-folding side door. Because of where we keep the crate, we only use the side door and it has been awesome not having to walk around a door that opens to the side and is in the way of the main flow of traffic. Even though the crate is noticeably bigger than our old one, it feels like it takes up the same amount of space because of that door. I can't speak highly enough of it. For more practical items, the crate is very sturdy and well made. There were no problems with shipping and other than needing a little muscle, the crate went together very easily. My newfypoo isn't one that will try to escape from a crate, so I can't speak to that, but I have been very impressed with the quality of this crate and how easy it was to get my big-little puppy used to it. I purchased two of these "KennelMaster 24" Folding Black Wire 2 Door Dog Crate" and have had them for several months. What a great buy! Super easy to set up: they come preassembled and all folded up. They unfold and set up in a minute. I have one for each of my dogs: a Maltese/Bichon mix and a Chihuahua mix (who looks just like a small German Shepherd). We use their crates for the night time and when we leave the house. These crates are made of very nice thick metal. Incredibly sturdy. The latches are well made and smart-doggy proof. I like that the bottom is solid and can be easily removed and sanitized. My dogs have scratched and nibbled on the bars daily and the crates have held up like new. There are two doors on each crate: one door on a long side and one door on a short side. There's also a handle on top which makes it really easy to move around when I am relocating it, transporting the dogs, or just moving the crates to vacuum and clean underneath. My crates also came with some additional wire dividers that I don't use. I believe they are for making the crate smaller when you have a puppy and removing it as your dog grows. Crates can be really expensive so I was glad to find these at such a bargain price, especially because they are so well made. I know these crates will last many, many years. I have no negative things to say about these dog crates. I would highly recommend them! Please note: I do not put both dogs in the same crate, though they do both fit. We found the cage good quality for our Beagle to travel in. We would have give it 5 stars but the door locks with one latch but it rackles and is slightly out of line and also putting a metal tray at the bottom makes a noise when your travelling should have put a plastic one in it would have been less noise because the metal one slides in the cage when moving in the car. Perfect fit in the boot. Medium is a good size for our French Bulldog/Cavalier Cross. I would suggest the small cage must be for truly small breeds.kili13climb

Fits perfectly in the back of our Hyundai Kona, and the right size for our border collie pup . A couple of issues with the gate. If the height of the gate was increased up to the next mesh section it would make it easier to get the puppy in and out of without having to hold her head down. The latch is a bit fiddly to close, needs to line up better with the mating part. Having said that the quality of the crate is very good, and with attention to the points above it could be rated excellent.rogergolfing
