Best Dog Beds For Arthritic Dogs (Jan 2023 Update)

My only criticism of this product is that the upper face of the cover could be stronger, most dogs like to scratch around before they lie down and big dogs have big strong claws and will quickly do serious damage unless the material is really strong. This bed is better than many of a similar type i have bought but that top surface could still be stronger. In other respects it is a very good product.jaq676

This bed is amazing for so many reasons. My cat doesn't usually take to beds purchased from pet supply stores or big box stores because they smell like other animals, even after several washings. This time I tried buying online and I'm SO GLAD I did! The bed came quickly and was vacuum sealed. Sometimes items that are sealed like this smell of plastic or cleaning solutions, not this bed! It smelled great, fresh and clean. I followed the instructions for fluffing the fibers and tossing it in the dryer for a short tumble. It puffed up just perfectly. I placed the bed on my cat's favorite ottoman and in 2 minutes she was huddled down and sleeping. Best bed ever!!Melissa

My 2 multi shitz dogs love these beds. It's the "deep dish" they like & the edge they use like a pillow. I got 1 for each. They are med. Small 10 – 13 lbs. & with plenty of room. They snuggle way down when it's cold. Or just hang there heads out when it's warmer. Best purchase ever for us. Woof woof!jacljc

These dog beds are great for midsize or smaller dogs. They love to snuggle in these hugs of a bed. I bought two. They are washable and they are great to use in the car. The beds completely encompass the dogs or cat.Heather

You can wash the outside of the bed fan but the inside is a paper bag filled with chopped up foam that can't be washed. i dont about everyione but I'll bet there goes outside and gets stinky. why would you sell a bed without a serviceable liner in it. I am thinking about throwing the inside bag away and buying another bed from a dufferent company that i can put inside that can be washed. The problem is that dog loves it ir i would throw it away. i have resirted to putting a large garbage bag over the stinky part so she can still use it until I can do better. To much work. This probably isn’t the review you’d expect, but my daughter LOVES this bed. When she was a few months old, we went on a family vacation and in lieu of spending $180 for a DockATot, we purchased this instead. This bed has literally been her obsession since that trip. Any time she sees it (even when I bring it downstairs to wash), she starts panting like a dog and rushes over to try and lay on it. We used it past the vacation and put it into her crib at home. She’s 20 months old now, and we’re trying to transition her to a toddler bed, but she keeps tossing and turning all night because she loves this dang dog bed so much and her regular toddler mattress just isn’t good enough for her. I came here to figure out what the minky fabric is that covers this darn bed so I can buy a fitted sheet of the same/similar texture to try and appease her and figured I would leave a review while I was here. We bought an extra when she was in daycare because she was having a rough time during nap time. Ohhh the laughs we got when I brought the dog bed in.. but it worked and she went right to sleep!Heather

It shrunk in size! Very disappointed in this purchase. They are making them smaller and the height is only 6 in compared to what the dimensions on the site saying 8 inches tall, they should be careful about that. Purchased a replacement cover for an existing bed and a new identical bed and neither cover fits this new bed right. Apparently the foam for the new bed is not sized correctly. The cover is too short to properly fit the bed and keeps it curled up on the ends. Also wish you would ship these in boxes rather than tightly rolled up making it hard to get them to straighten out.Gary S.

My dog loves the bed to lay on – but the cover can't stand up to any sort of "nesting". He's not a dog that digs in general, but with any new bed, he paws a little as he gets settled. There was a small hole in the cover within 2 weeks, which of course was immediately expanded to a huge tear (what dog can resist a hole?) and gouges of the foam. I didn't expect it to hold up to chewing, but I did expect it hold up to normal dog settling in behavior! Wish I had purchased something more robust.SL

My two dogs, who are very particular about laying on blankets and pillows, both gravitated to this bed as soon as I put it out for them. They love the combination of the orthopedic bed with the soft and fuzzy plush covering on it and will stay there for hours, when they used to only curl up on the couch with a blanket with a human. Their immediate satisfaction with the bed was a very pleasant surprise and I cannot stress enough how picky my dogs are about where/what they lay on and how much they love this bed. I ordered this after my 60lb Golden girl refused to leave my sister’s Golden’s bed over the holidays. My sister told me where she got it and I ordered my girl one immediately! It is a nice thick bed with a very soft cover. I got the beige/cream color, which has a little bit more yellow tinge to it than I’d like, but it still matches our home decor & her hair color the best out of the options. I got the Jumbo size which gives her plenty of room to sprawl out when she wants. I love that it has a little height on the sides for when she wants her head elevated. I haven’t needed to wash it, but the cover does come off, so I know it’s an option (but can’t attest to how well it holds up to a wash).CSally9

I bought two of these for my Rough Collie. He was about 70-75 pounds and very old. I needed something to keep him off the hard floor. He road 1500 miles in the back of my car on his bed and was super comfy the whole way! We had them in the bedroom and in the living room for him. He loved them a lot. We had them for close to 2 years before another dog decided to keep urinating on them. I was able to wash the covers easily but the foam was getting really stained and gross smelling.Raquel C.

So far this bed seems great. My favorite part is that it didn't have any foam odor when it arrived! Foam seems very high quality. _x000D_ My dog has not used it much yet but I have noticed the top and bottom fabric of the bed is a bit slippery. The first time my dog got on the bed his backside slide off the bed as the bed moved forward. I probably would have been better off with a bolster style and different fabric for him especially now that he is an advanced senior. I have two dogs, a mini-Aussie in this size range and a border collie slightly larger than this range. Both use the bed happily (never together). The fabric isn’t showing any signs of wear. The egg crate is somewhat compressed, but still offers plenty of padding (I can’t touch the floor through it). We own two of these exact beds (one is 4 month of use and the other less than a month). This is holding up nicely compared to many more expensive beds on the market. I have been very happy with our purchases. We are repeat customers, not to replace the first, but to add another bed to the home in a different location.Michele G.

This seems to be a good dog bed. Be prepared…. it takes 3 to 4 days for it to “fluff up”. It comes rolled up and it was really flat considering the specifications said it was 4” high! Letting it set to fluff it took about 3 days for it to become 4” high. The cover is a bit loose but does not bother my girl, she really likes her new bed. I feel this bed was worth the money, she spends more time on her new bed than she did on her old one.Linda

We purchased 2 xl beds. They came wrapped in plastic and vacuum sealed. The directions said they should fully expand in 24 to 72 hours. We are on day 5, and one of the beds is almost fully expanded, but the 2nd bed is still very squished in the center and corners. We are following the directions and shaking them several times a day. Im beginning to think the 2nd bed may have to be returned/replaced. I will give it a couple more days, but it dosent look like it has made any progress in the last couple days.Brenda101

This is a great, durable bed! Our puppy loves it! For some reason, my two older dogs refused to lay on them (we bought two). I think they may have been used to a firmer bed. They would step on it and immediately jump off. The puppy took to it immediately though.Diane

We got our dog bed 6 ish years ago and it's a favorite with our fur family. The sun and washing has lightened it but the stitching and zipper have held up amazing. We did add a piece of memory foam to the middle for our 14 year old dog when he was spending longer days on it (fit no worries). We're getting another but the first one has lots of life left in it. We ordered this dog bed because our 7 month lab puppy has a tendency to chew anything he can fit his mouth around. After burning through two dog beds in 2 months, and pulling countless cotton balls out of my puppy's mouth, we decided to invest in a bed that would last. This dog bed has done just what we needed it to. It's large and very pillow-like. I have had 4 different dogs and constantly trying to find a well made durable dog bed for Shih-tzu's we're not talking Great Danes we're talking Shih-tzu's. These beds are well made. Constructed well with good material that wash up great! I can't say enough I bought another pair just to have as a backup. We own 4 people pillows which we are thrilled with as well. This large doggie orthopedic sofa bed is the best bed I've bought for my boxer. He loves this bed. The first night of sleeping on this bed was the best night for me…why…because He didn't wake me up until 9am instead of 7:30 am to go out to potty. I believe he had a more comfortable sleep, also because he appeared to have more engery…jumping around like a Jack rabbit, circling around me wagging his tail as to say thankyou. He hasn't slept in his crate since sleeping on his new bed. I put his favorite blanket over it and now its not pulled all over the floor. Best bed for my buddy ever.Jazzy

The "cooling" side of the mattress is a lie. I know how cooling mattresses looks like and yours just have the color but not a cooling layer. My dog is very hot in his new bed during hot days and sleeps on the floor. Therefore, I feel cheated for having paid almost $50 for this bed. Also, the cover material is synthetic which naturally created heat and on top of a synthetic sponge creates a really too hot environment for my dog. The material is slippery so my elderly dog can hardly get up. The only reason I gave two stars is that the shape and height are good. Still, sizes you provide are inadequate and not a reflection of dog needs which is strange when Furheaven is in this business. My Yorki is a normal size. Yet, when I bought small which you recommend according to the size and weight chart as well as the sleeping area measurements you provided,he can fit well provided he is all the time in something like a fetus position and he doesn't move much. He cannot stretch or lie down in such a way so as to have at least an inch of space between himself and the sides of the bed. Dogs sometimes sleep in a stretched position and do need some extra space. Dogs also move during the sleep, swirl around, wiggle. So I had to get him a medium size which is really too big for him and the space where we keep it in our apartment but I am happy he has some extra space. Humans don't sleep in beds which are exactly their size. Standard beds even if a twin size have some extra space on all four sides because nobody stays in one position during the night. Why would it be any different for dogs especially when it's known that they sleep most of the time. I don't get it.Zenja B.

We absolutely LOVE this bed!!! It is extremely well made with separate zippered compartments for the bolster and bed padding. This makes it very easy to wash the cover and not the padding. I highly recommend the "Convoluted Orthopedic Foam" Mattress. As we live in California where the weather is warmer, the "Quilted" Cover material has been perfect all year round. This is actually our second bed that we bought. The first bed we bought for our an older dog who was starting to get arthritis and have back issues. We felt this bed greatly reduced his symptoms and made his last years much more comfortable. At a certain point we ordered a replacement cover for the first bed. It was still in such great condition when he passed that we could not get rid of it. Our new puppy found the bed and claimed it as her own. We decided to get a new cover for her along with another bed, so she had one in each room. We got the Medium size originally for a 35 LB older dog. The puppy is currently 20LB, but will probably be 35-40 LB as an adult. This has provided plenty of room for both dogs.Joan B.

We have purchased the Premium Fleece Dog Bed for many of our dogs and they are always enjoyed by our dogs. They seem to find them comfortable to snuggle into the fleece and the soft, cushy filling. They are easy to clean with the quick zip-off cover. They fit nicely in spaces in any room. Our dog also has the LLBean couch bed and has really liked that too. I cover the couch bed with an LLBean dog blanket that I can wash quickly because it is not as easy to remove/replace the couch bed cover for washing as how easily the Premium Fleece Dog Bed cover can be washed. I purchased the Premium Fleece Dog Bed Set, Medium, Rectangular as well as the Replacement Cover in Denim. I have a 12 lb. Chihuahua/Fox Terrier that is about the size of an average Jack Russell or Beagle and she loves, loves, loves her bed. The padding is well made and has a little bit of a groove all around with a little bit of a bump in the center. So it is not completely flat, which I have learned from observing our furry pet that it serves a purpose. She likes to rest within the groove for security. On other days she likes to rest her head and chest on the bump in the center which elevates her a little bit. Our dog used have a cheap bed that became too soft and did not hold up well once it got old. Especially when she laid against the side walls. It had a tendency to flatten out. Plus, it had a plush-life fabric that was too warm in the summertime, and she would hang partially off the bed onto the hardwood floor which is cooler. So, comfort, temperature, structure, and durability were factors taken into consideration in searching for a new bed. I had read reviews about the padding falling apart in the washer or tearing from digging. I have not had to wash the pad because I have covered the bed and denim cover with a crib-size bed pad and a fitted bedsheet for added protection; and because our pooch has always enjoyed the feel and texture of a bedsheet. She just got used to looking for cooling spots on her beds after we tried keeping her cool on other retailer beds that had either foam or cheap fill which caused her become too warm. But she does love her Sherpa adult throw. Not familiar with L.L. Bean pet products, I decided to purchase the bed set that came with the fleece cover and also ordered the replacement cover in denim which is a soft denim. It is not stiff or rough as in jean denim. I was concerned the fleece cover might be too warm, and I wanted to have the option to change from a warmer cover to a cooler one being that it was summertime when my order arrived, so that was the reason in my purchasing the denim replacement cover as well. When my order arrived, I placed the denim cover on the pad and it has held up really well. It doesn't show dirt and our pooch likes it. I was afraid it would rip when she sniffed the bed and began digging but that has not been the case. So it has stood pretty well to that. I have not replaced the denim cover with the fleece cover yet, but weather is starting to change and getting cooler. I will probably change from the denim liner to the Sherpa liner soon. I also want to add that I ordered a medium size bed which is a little bigger than what is recommended for a dog her weight/size because she likes to spread out. That was also one reason why I chose a bed that is not enclosed or has side walls. If it's any help to anyone reading this review, the medium bed is about four inches short the length of a baby crib mattress. It's the best bed I have bought. I haven't seen anything else at other stores that meet the same quality of L.L. Bean products, and I highly recommend this bed.Mimi

We use these in our hotel for our guests that bring their dogs and, oh boy, do we get a LOT of guests with adorable dogs of all ages and sizes. These beds are holding up amazingly well through multiple washings. I'm actually here on the LL Bean website to order more because we have had so many dogs staying with us, we have had nights where we did not have enough dog beds to accommodate all of our four-legged guests. I highly recommend these beds. We have the Platinum color and they look very classy and are still so durable and stain-resistant. I love this cat bed that doubles as a coffee table. I have even used it for seating. Unfortunately, my cat has never used it. Smaller than appears more 12×12. Cute as can be but my Grandmas small 10lb Dotson cannot for between the adorable sidearms. Pay attention to overall dimensions. They are from end to end. This item is for extra small dogs. It was a Christmas present for Grandmas new dog that so wanted to love it as soft and appealing as it is but there was no way he could comfortably fit in it. Posting a picture using a paper towel roll and tape measure for better visual so you won't have to make the same mistake and leave your loved one without a present because there small dog won't fit in it.Kristy

I have a bichon/poodle mix, and he barley fits on it, but he tries. Also, you have no say in what color you get. Pictured was black. I was sort of hoping for black or red, but got tan. Meh, that's not a big deal. I love the little pillow that comes with it but that's about the best part of it. Perfect size for our 95 pound Golden Retriever. The outer fabric is denim and very durable and washable. Inner waterproof liner protects memory foam. Our dog is very rough on her beds…she likes to pick up and shake and toss her beds around. This bed is heavy and not easily tossed. I think it will last her a long time. Does the job and my elderly dog loves it. However, the removable pillow needs to be more secured to the base of the bed. There are only two small squares of Velcro which do not hold. My dog tends to move around durning the night and a few times I've found him wedged between the pillow and the side of the bed because it just doesn't stayed secured with too much movement.Rachel

I thought this bed looked great on the site but upon getting it and letting my little gal sleep in it it turns out that its really a DISASTER. Let me explain. The cushion in the bed does not cover the entire floor of the bed and when she gets in it gets pushed to the back and she ends up sleeping in a "crevice" and falls to the bottom of the bed.
