Best At Home Dog Clippers (Feb 2023 Update)

I am a dog groomer and I went to classes for dog grooming. I bought this product to help and review it for people. My final say is this is an excellent piece when used correctly. I use correctly very heavily. For this to work on your dog and to get an even cut you MUST use a de-shedding tool. They are found in many different forms but most commonly a simple rake or dog brush it long enough teeth will do. You'll need to thoroughly brush out the loose undercoat otherwise the blades of even the most professional clippers will get tangled and caught. THE FUR MUST BE DRY. Also you need to go WITH the fur not against this will cause a poor cut. Finally the blades will heat up, either do the more sensitive areas of the dog fist, or get a second blade so you can interchange them while one cools. NO matter which way you deal with heated blades ALWAYS ALWAYS A L W A Y S USE BLADE OIL!! its as simple as running a small amount of oil over the blades of cleaned unmoving blades and brushing it through with an old tooth brush. cleaning the blades can be done with a toothbrush aswell. I purchased this to groom my dog who is part Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever/Doberman Pinscher. He weighs about 65 lbs. I would have taken him to our Petco groomer, but recently had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and when they called us to get him in, he had just had his stitches out and wanted him to heal more. Eventually, I decided tobuy this Clipper Kit. It's easy to use and effectively grooms dog. I didn't watch the video, but maybe should have. I didn't use the scissors either. However, I got the intended result. I would recommend it. Also, watch the video. The razor did get pretty toasty, so I had to stop occasionally to let it cool down and clean out the blades. I also made sure to use the oil included in the kit before and during use.Teressa G

I guess I'm having a hard time finding clippers that you can use on the whole body that aren't 100s of dollars. These were slowing down dramatically in 15 minutes, sounded like they are dying. Meanwhile my 12-year-old clippers can still manage to get the job done. These probably work fine for trims and touchups (but not full body shaving a 50lb Standard Poodle). I liked that my other andis blades worked on this clipper so that's why 3 stars. But I am still returning.Alicia93

When covid made it difficult to get my dogs groomed, I tried doing it myself. My dogs did not make it easy. After 3 different brands, i ordered oneisall clippers and it changed everything. No noise, easier vibration, and no snagging. I can get my dogs to cooperate and they even have gained patience for ME learning how to style a nice groom.julie.r

It was hard to pick out a brand, but I finally tried this one. Inexpensive at less than $100, and it cut my fluffy dog's fur really well without feeling like I was raking it through her fur or combing it with the blade. It's not super loud, but it's not whisper quiet. My dog wasn't bothered. Happy with my purchase. I'm not a professional groomer, so maybe there's better out there, but worked great for me!N.D.

I bought these clippers at Petco curbside pickup during the coronavirus quarantine. I have a silky terrier (most people think it's a yorkie) and he needed some "tidying up". I was really happy with the heft of the clipper and all the guards that came with it. After watching the included DVD, I bathed and dried my dog and clipped him. My dog is VERY used to being groomed but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. Other seemingly similar clippers I researched were over twice the price. These clippers are meant for a dog with a fine to medium coat so I think if you buy them for that type of dog and follow the directions (and oil them as recommended) that you will be very happy with your purchase. I purchased these because I am unable to locate clippers for my dog. I did an extensive search and looked at many reviews from several sites. This was the only company that could send these within a week. They showed up in 5 days. I also pulled these from the package and was impressed by the sturdiness of the clippers and how they looked. They are not load and work right out of the box. I oiled them to make sure they would not have any problems as recommend. The video CD is very helpful for any dog. I have a miniature Schnauzer. He was very over grown and very shaggy. Lots of tangles and matting. These clippers cut through all that with no problem. Very smooth and quick cut and not a lot heat from the clippers to make my dog feel uncomfortable. I love these clippers and should have bought a set years ago with the ease of cutting my dog. Love this item I use it when groom my dogs on thee feet, I can get rid of the bulk of hair easier. It is quite and it doesn't scare them like some trimmers. Grate buy for the money. This is my 3rd one over the years. I either wear the blade out or I have dropped them.Lisa

This little trimmer is quiet(er) than other trimmers and is good for a beginner. I used it on my teacup poodle (6 lbs). It did not come with any lubricant so you'll need to order that. I got the hang of it pretty fast. It's very effective. I did also try it on my Beagle, who has short, wiry fur and it was just adequate. I don't think this is a good buy for dogs with a wiry or heavy coat. It may work on that kind of coat if you just want to work on small areas.Juli

I bought this SEVEN years ago for my toy poodle puppy. I was in school at the time and decided I'd make an investment in grooming supplies and save money. This has never let me down! I've used it at least once monthly for all those years and I haven't had to have the blade replaced or anything. I've followed the suggestions of brushing out the blades after using and occasionally oiling it and it's performed very well. Words of caution: it can be rather noisy, and it can get really really close- so you have to watch it to make sure you don't skin your pooch. The more I've used it, the more comfortable me and my dog have gotten with it and now I couldn't do without it. It's great on grooming his face, under his tail and his paws. This product is OK. It isn’t heavy and it is fairly quiet which I like. The dog and cat aren’t fans of it but that is to be expected. This is a good size especially if you’re limited on space or traveling, etc.Kaitlynn

I am in rescue & buy at least 2 new cordless clippers every 6 months. It has a 5 in 1 blade and it easy to cut the face, tail, sanitary areas, feet, etc. very close on poodles. I can usually clip one standard poodle using both batteries for the really big standards. It is quiet and doesn't freak out neglected or abused rescues. It is cordless so you can move around easily. I have used this brand & model for poodles weighing 4 pounds and up to 95 pounds. I've also used it for many small breed dogs and a good many low shedding big dogs. Just be sure you buy from someone who deals with clippers & knows the product. It is lightweight also, the blades are easy to pop off & clean, they are easy to use. Perfect for finicky cats. The blades were super sharp and slid through my Persians fur without catching. Its quiet and pretty lightweight. The two batteries are great but even after running it for an hour I only needed the one. Definitely recommend for home use. The one and only con is that it got a little warm. Bought this a few weeks ago when another cordless clipper I own would no longer hold a charge and I could not buy a replacement rechargeable battery. I use it to touch up my horses bridle path and face and my dog between her professional groomings. It works great. I also used the old one to cut my husbands hair but this one will not cut his hair so that is a con. I love how light it is and how the shape feels in my hand. It is also very quiet.Karen

Like many Wahl clipper , this is an efficient product. BUT!, i feel this machine heats up a little more than others i used before, and it could feel like it's burning the hand a little, although the clipper still working properly with no fault. Still i must tell that i have an adult schnauzer dog and clipping his hair after many months of hair growing took a long time and finishing was uncomfortable for my hand. I ended up gripping the clipper with the tip of my fingers to avoid the high heat of the body of the grip.ojtok.tepetl

I used these as soon as the set was delivered. I used to have to tranquilize my pet before taking him to the groomers; that's why I wanted to give this item a try. As soon as I got them, I gave them a try. The clippers were light-weight and quiet. My little dog wasn't afraid and sat quietly while I clipped him, right down to his underside and toes! He thought he was being brushed out! I just saved myself over $70 a month on grooming charges…he will let me clip his fur as it grows out and I won't have to drug him up to do it. As I get more adept at clipping, no one will know that he is being clipped at home instead of at a shop. I have been hand-trimming him for several years anyway and now I can do the entire job myself. I purchased this for one of my cats who has bad matted fur on her back she was fine with this till I actually tried to use on her I had to have my boyfriend hold her down and I removed one big mat so far and will be trying again tonight. My other cat didn't mind this at all she just laid there and let me shave her she had very little mats in her fur. I do recommend this you just need to be patient and take it slow especially if you have scared cats like I do. I don't know how well it works with the clippers attached I used it without a clipper and went back and forth slowly at the mat.tingargiul_2

This clipper saved me so much money. I had a different clipper that would get hot from the length of time I'd be having to use it because it would barely cut the dog's hair. (I even had the blades replaced) So I decided to buy this clipper and I was amazed at how it cut the dog's undercoat so effortlessly like a hot knife on butter. I was looking forward to this, because of the great reviews. Well, I have the same problems as all the other 1 star reviews. Guess some of us get a faulty one??? My pup’s fur (maltipoo) was freshly cleaned and completely dry and brushed out. I’ve used buzzers on humans before, so I had a general idea of how this should go. Plus i watched a ton of dog grooming how to videos. All this does is take off a tiny bit of fur and then get stuck. Over and over. The hair never falls off, i had to pull it off every time. We tried adjusting the settings, changing the blade covers, using it with no cover, even turning the blade adjusting screw. Even at its highest possible setting (also very loud) it just doesn’t cut. After several 15 minute attempts, we hadn’t even made a dent. She looks the same. Very disappointed.Ellie

After a failed attempt at giving my fluffy cat a buzz cut with regular clippers, I bit the bullet and bought these "pet" clippers. You wouldn't think it would make that big of a difference, but let me tell you, these cut so much better. Using a guard I didnt experience any pulling or snagging and my cat sat comfortably. The only downside was that they did seem to get hot after 10 or so minutes of usage. The noise and vibration didnt scare my cat, but I would recommend turning them on and petting/encouraging your pet before cutting, to give them a few minutes to feel comfortable. These clippers took off so much hair I barely even recognize my cat 😂 lol. I would efinitely recommend these to others as an affordable option for grooming your pet at home.marissa.b

I’m a professional groomer that needed a quick replacement clipper while mine was in for repair. This clipper is hard to use. The blade hinge is very tight and difficult to open. The blade drive needs to be perfectly aligned to change blades, and can take several tries. I don’t think it was really meant to swap blades. I'm not a professional groomer. I've taken my Lhasa to get professionally groomed for the first 15 years of her life, then the pandemic hit, shuttering her groomer's place of work. After 8 weeks without a haircut, she couldn't see because of her hair and her hair all over was getting out of control. I chose these specific ones because of the reviews and also partially because these were one of maybe two types of clippers left in my area bc all others were sold out. I'm glad I was able to snag these! They worked very well, and didn't get hot (and I was clipping for quite some time since my pup is a wiggler!). The noise wasn't overly loud – it sounded no louder than my ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. My dog didn't mind the noise. They were easy to use after watching some YouTube tutorials. The one downside is the "instruction booklet" was not very helpful. It only contained the standard warnings and some graphics that don't really aid the user in telling me how to remove the blade to clean it (I'm still trying to figure that one out) I would definitely recommend these if you want to clip your dog at home. When I feel comfortable with her going to the groomer again, I definitely plan to take her back to the pros, but in the meantime, these work to carry me over and for in-between visits to the salon.MomOfLhasa

The razor got the job done on my super “hairy/fuzzy” dog. I don’t know her breed but the coat is very thick and matted. I order a different blade, (7 skip tooth), and was pleased. I had to work it a little with an upward motion in the bad areas but it cut through. The only thing I had trouble with was changing the blades. It took me a few tries to get the old blade off but eventually I got it.Theresa S.

This is a great entry-level clipper/grooming kit. Has everything that you need for light-duty grooming, and then some. The metal comb and small head attachment for getting in smaller places (paws, elbows, etc.) are a nice addition. These clippers have multiple speed settings that are selected on the back-side of the unit and activated when pushing the button on the front (i.e., a "boost" to use as needed). Nice feature. Easy to use, clips around feet, face etc. For light duty touch up only, wouldn't recommend using it as a full body grooming tool. Only clips small sections at a time. Quiet, light weight, and easy to handle! These are the only thing I use to clip the insides of ears bc they can easily get the hard to reach areas, and they have much more power than several of the other cordless clippers I've tried. You do have to keep the blade oiled and clean though, otherwise it will get dull very fast. They're also super easy because they only take 1 battery!Smalls12

These are quieter than standard clippers, although not noiseless, and with a few of my horses, these are the only clippers they will let me use. I used them on a 2 year old who had never been clipped successfully, and after letting her listen to them for a minute, I was able to walk up and pet her shoulder before giving her whiskers a good clean up. Her owner, who happens to be my grandmother, was shocked to pick her up from me clipped and cleaned. Wonderful little purchase for touch-ups. My fur baby was terrified of clippers, so much that I had to asked the Vet for advice. She fought during grooming and would not be still. She would hide under and behind furniture for 24 hours after it was over The Vet prescribed a sedative for her grooming. She is a toy poodle with very thick, curly hair. So I knew I had to find a better clipper for her. I emailed Wahl CS and talked to them and they recommended this KM 2 and I'm so glad I did. I had a little trouble getting the clipper blade attached but again Wahl was there to help. For the first time I was able to clip her STANDING STILL! I was amazed! They easily cut a strip down her back in one pass. It made grooming faster and easier. I love them. They do a great job and once you get the blade on the first time, it's so easy to clean and put the blades back on. Very easy to change blades during clipping to your desired length for different parts of dogs body. Horrible and Loud! Dogs jump every time you turn them on. Half of them recoil from the clippers while you are trying to shave them. I had to settle for these because PetEdge can't keep anything in stock, and I will never again buy clippers from them.Carl D. K.

Have been riding for over 50 years. This is the 5th set of Oster clippers in my life. Have clipped horses, goats and dogs. Never had a clippers break or stop running. Have given them away for various reasons but always ended up getting another A5 Oster again. Just the most reliable. Gave my last set to my granddaughter for her dogs when my schnauzer died. We purchased this for our plush coat shepherd who needed her bloomers groomed badly. She hates being brushed and had layer and layer of thick hot undercoat. The clippers were very efficient in removing all the hair and we could tell our Lexi felt much better (and cooler) after she was "cleaned up". I must admit I was a bit intimidated as I've never used clippers on a dog, but the guard allowed me to get the desired result, and gave me confidence within a couple minutes. The various attachments allow for flexibility also. I couldn't believe how fast I was done. The clipper feels sturdy and well made. It is a nice kit and I'm pleased with the purchase. The only dumb thing I did in preparing to use it for the first time was; when applying the oil to the blade as it tells you to do (this will make you giggle… as I said, I've never used clippers before) I was following the instructions that say to "OIL for maximum efficiency…Place one or two drops of oil on blades while clipper running" well, I did that but tried to help the oil along by using the little brush provided thinking it would help spread the oil with the clipper running….yeah, you can guess… it started chewing up the little bristle brush. Oops, LOL. So don't do as I did. Leave the brush in the kit till you're done and ready to clean it, oh, and turn it off : )) Duh!! Other than that little faux pas, all was well. My husband and I read all the reviews before buying this and compared it to other clippers sold on WallyWorld's site. I don't know what the issue is, but people (like the reviewer below me) need to watch YouTube videos on how to shave their pet before leaving negative or neutral comments. We have a very long-haired rescue kitty who has to be shaved twice a year due to California heat (and humidity), otherwise the shedding and hairballs are a nightmare. He has an equally thick undercoat, so we had to make sure that whatever we bought came from a good company and Wahl delivers with this. We oiled the blades (which also need to be turned on for 30 seconds or so before shaving). We also did not use one of the guides. And at 3am, most of his hair is in the trashcan. Due to squirming, I had to make several passes in some areas, but this shaver delivered each time. The clippers did not get clogged, and if you realize that shaving an animal may take *TIME*, *PATIENCE*, and possibly a helper, you'll do fine with this set. (I need my husband's help for our kitty's belly and legs.) Our kitty was not nicked by the blades with a very close shave, and the choppy look he has now is the same choppy look he gets from professional groomers because he's got anxiety issues with anything close to him that makes an electric hum. (Gardening or leather gloves can help prevent scratches on hands, long-sleeved thick shirts are good for arm/back protection if you have an animal who climbs—like a frightened kitty.) I would recommend anyone grooming an impatient or anxious animal use a table or leveled area so you don't have to bend in awkward positions. I used our kitchen sink, which is a single long sink from the 50s. No issues there. It just came today, so I can't comment about how long the motor and parts will last, but seriously, the extended warranty is $2.00, and as with all electrical devices these days, it's cheaper to buy the warranty and not need it than it is to not buy the warranty and then have something go wrong. Above all, please remember that animals have emotions and reactions. Be patient, be kind, give praise and treats, but most of all, invest time into grooming your pet. These are a life saver! They cut so easily and work very well. They are lightweight so it made it very convenient to trim around my dogs face, paws, and ears. They are not to large so it worked well on my medium sized dog. He has curly fur and I had not issues while trimming him.RVazquez2021

We don't need shears for daily grooming with our short haired and midsized dogs, but I love these to have on standby for trimming around injuries and other first aid. The shears are sharp but the rounded tip helps me feel much safer about using them when our pups might not be the most cooperative. So glad to have these on standby just in case!Katie S.

I like that the scissors have a rounded tip so it won’t poke your animal when cutting their hair. Not to state the obvious, but it could still hurt the animal if not careful. The scissors are a little flimsy, but overall good.Taylor
