The XL size can be hard to find. Was out-of-stock at Petmate, so I signed up for an e-mail alert when in stock. I am confident I received an alert just as soon as it was being manufactured. I really appreciate that. I ordered two for my Aussies. Yes, is a tad large for them, but they've used this size since they were young, and sleep in them. They can turn around easily in them, the crate has very good air movement, and the sides are straight with no lost space inside as so many have with curved sides. One cover was damaged in shipment. I let Petmate know on a weekend and got an immediate response from customer service. I just sent them a picture of the damage and had a new crate in a few days. Great experience all around. Shipping cost was high, but that's part of the time we live in. I'd been looking for this crate at other locations for a few years. Never found it in XL. Was well worth the shipping cost to me. This is my second purchase directly from Petmate — each experience has been great.

So my dogs are rescues. The first one hated the metal wire crate. 3 years & another rescue added to our pack I decided to try crating again to save my home. I was a bit nervous because this was a huge investment – I purchased 2 cates & 2 crate beds. I assembled the crates in the bedroom where they would be placed. I allowed my dogs to watch me and inspect. I even stood inside the crate before assembling so they could see. I put in the cushy furry bed, got a treat, said kennel up and Bam! They climbed right in, I closed the door and gave them their treat. They absolutely LOVE their crates. When they get frightened from the thunder & lightning, they kennel up and are happier & safer. When we have people coming to visit, especially new to the pups, I kennel them up about 10 minutes before guests arrive. Once guests show up, I explain to them to ignore the dogs when I let them out. The kennels are made of a cheap plastic that cracked assumingely upon an impact during shipping. Pet mate is replacing unit, however the quality is not that of the unit I’ve had for 10+ years. When a puppy, accidents do happen. It is easy to clean. Uma is about 20lbs now and can stand up in the kennel. Still plenty of height room. She may become 30-40lbs and this kennel will be all we need. Our use is for nighttime and when we go out. We have the gray which does not stand out. flying my 2 kitties cargo was an ordeal that i absolutely DO NOT EVER want to go through again.(im sure it wasnt even that bad for them, but it was terrible for me!) ultimately though, it had to be done. ive never shipped/flown a pet before so this all began with a search for a crate. petmate skykennel was the obvious choice. even though they're cats, my boys are big fellas. i went with the medium size so they'd have extra room. the crates were exactly what i needed. only thing i will say is, i did order an extra set of all-metal bolts/fasteners (from amazon); the ones that come with the crates are ok, but the overruling word on pet cargo travel seems to be all-metal is required. maybe its just required for international flights? either way i ordered a set. glad i bought ONLY that from amazon, though!i was about to buy the crates from there too, then i thought hmmm maybe someplace else had them at a better price…and yep… "someplace else" sure did! I did a lot of research before we decided to by the extra large Petmate dog crate. We currently have the "Giant" dog crate in a bedroom for our mixed malamute–but we have to disassemble it to take it out of the room. We need the dog crate for when we take our dog camping. The last time we took him camping, on the last day, we left him in our cabin for a few hours. When we came back, he had tore the curtain and blinds apart on two different windows. We spent hours trying to get new blinds and I had to sew the curtains. So, this crate in mandatory if our dog is going camping again! We currently have a fifth wheel trailer that we camp in. Also, the metal dog crates–our dog can get right out of them using his body!Diane
While certainly not inexpensive, it far outprices the alternative for a crate that meets all the requirements for airline travel for my German Shepherd. Years ago I also used to travel with my Dalmatian and I used the Petmate Sky Kennel then. Both dogs felt comfortable in the kennel at home and so having to step into it to be loaded on a plane was not a struggle. The only negative is the food/water tray. It's for a rabbit, not a 90 pound German Shepherd, but that's any easy fix for me, but the manufacturer should reconsider.

Although the carrier was more expensive with Hayneedle, I ordered 2 because they prominently advertised that it was the color Bleached Linen and everyone else was showing a two-tone tan and black. I have 2 in Linen already and wanted 2 more to match. The ones I received were tan and black. The carrier quality is fine and up to the standard of my 2 older ones, but these are not as advertised. Great kennel. Even better shipping, came to my house in 2 days after ordering. I wouldn't go off of the weight recommendation when purchasing this kennel for your dog- the XL says for dogs 50-70 lbs and my golden is 60 lbs however my golden although being within the weight limit was a tad bit too long for this size. I did take it back to my local Petco to exchange for a slightly larger size (size 40 inches in length) and the store's customer service was phenomenal in helping me with my exchange. This kennel is strong. The tie-down holes, one per corner, go through both the top half and the bottom half of the kennel, which is an excellent improvement over no tie down holes. Another improvement over the old version is that water cannot collect on top since there are no bowl-like indentations on the top. The door is heavy construction, and can be mounted as Left or Right swing. I put the kennel on the passenger's side of the vehicle so that I can use the empty space behind the driver for carrying a jug of water, leashes, and other stuff. The advertised length is 40", but be aware that the usable length or "inside" length is 33". This is adequate if your dog is 33" or less from the top of the tail to the end of his front nails, while lying in the "sphinx" position. ONE CON: There are no drainage holes in the bottom half. I plan to drill my own (well, get the hubby to do it). A suggestion for the manufacturer: Make a Truck Version of the kennel. It would be the same as this except for two changes: (1) Add drain holes, and (2) Make the top rear panel (opposite the door) from transparent acrylic, so the driver can see through it. This would be a safety feature, as the blind spot would be reduced.Karen

My GSD pup is crate trained. I purchased my first PetMate plastic crate in 2004 and never had an issue. When my GSD got too big for his wire kennel, I upgraded the size and got a PetMate Ultra (for its airline approved status). For three solid nights and any day time crate use highly distressed my dog. No one in the house slept. He was quite agitated (barking, clawing at the crate bottom, etc). He could not sleep or lay down in the crate. On the fourth night, I put him in the crate with the same result. Ten minutes later, I took out the old 2004 crate (flat bottom, no injection mold markers) and popped him in it. He sat down and gave the biggest sigh. I finally understood he had been in distress because of the new crate. On inspection, I discovered these round things under the bottom, pressed into them with my forearms and immediately felt the pressure points/pain. Who thought this design was a good idea? Did PetMate even try it? I beg designers to sit in it, lie down in it, press their forearms on to these circle things. Question your motives. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a cheap excuse and terrible quality. I’ll be cross-posting this comment on multiple pet store sites. I’m so unimpressed with this design. The incredible distress my dog endured because of shoddy design is unacceptable. PetMate needs to do better for the pets you aim to help. PetMax shouldn’t sell this product; they should ensure the pets they serve do not experience stress or injury.Ginn
The plastic has gotten more brittle than it used to be. Already has stress marks on corners and not even used. The sky kennels I have from 20 years ago are still functioning. I got this for a ~60lbs. labrador retriever and he seems to love it. Big enough on the inside for him to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably. It's sturdy, but not so heavy that it doesn't move around a little bit when he changes positions. It was easy enough to put together. A couple of the plastic screws didn't seem to have the ends filed off all the way (hard to describe but basically instead of a flat end, the plastic stuck out a little extra on one side instead of being flat across), which made them harder to fit straight through the holes in assembly. Fortunately, they send a few extra, so I had enough that were straight enough to put the crate together. Also, just be aware of the plastic bottom – I ran my hand across the bottom to clean it before putting it together and scraped my hand on a piece of plastic that stuck up a little (it was like a little ring manufacturing imprint). I filed it down before letting my dog in so he wouldn't get scraped on it, but just something to be on the look out for.Labbadabbadoo
The sizing recommendation by the manufacturer seems to be off. Dimensions are not the actual dimensions if you were to take a measuring tape and measure yourself. For my 55 lb border collie mix who sits at 27 inches tall and stands at 37 inches long from nose to base of tail a large would not fit. I ordered the XX Large and that is a way better fit where she can actually sit without being hunched over. This was purchased for air travel as well so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The material seems relatively durable but it did arrive with a large crack so I will be exchanging. Compared to the Petmate Sky Kennel, this kennel seemed a little bit thinner in material and not as study. However, I order a Sky Kennel in a size Large so perhaps a sizing difference might have affected this. Also, currently, the Sky Kennel is available for a better price on Amazon but not in the size I am looking for.Zozobozo
Nicely built, easy to assemble (all holes line up for screws, about 10 with butterfly nuts).You get extra screws and rubber nuts. The cage design for opening and closing is nice and easy to use. Most of all, our dog took to it the first time. We had the S, same company. Uma is getting big now. Of course, we chose the same company and same product, just L in size. When a puppy, accidents do happen. It is easy to clean. Uma is about 20lbs now and can stand up in the kennel. Still plenty of height room. She may become 30-40lbs and this kennel will be all we need. Our use is for nighttime and when we go out. We have the gray which does not stand out. It is a neutral color and looks good in your kitchen, bedroom or where you keep your dog. The kennel also provides a rectangular cage on both sides on the top half so the dog can look out. Putting this together – I would say that the plastic is a good construction, the clasps and screws are great, and the metal bars for the windows look to be a decent quality. They ship you extra clips and screws in case you have a problem. I personally don't like the wheels (on any crate), so I'll leave those off and the pet bowl might be okay if I was sending the dog via airplane. The Large size isn't very large in my opinion. A dog should be able to stand up, turn around and lay down. I think this crate is more like a 50 pound max than 75. My 10 week old Golden Female Retriever will likely outgrow this kennel in 6 months and be in that weight range. In a way I'd like to exchange it for a bigger one.RichH

I have a ~13# mutt and she is obsessed with this carrier – granted, we haven't even taken a trip with it yet. It is flat on the bottom, not hurting your dog, it comes with a bed liner, it has plenty of doors to open for options, and the best is that it folds up and rolls away when you need it. I bought to take my new cat to the vet. He was only 9 lbs at the time so I assumed it would be more than enough for him. Upon bringing him home it literally fell apart and he got loose outside and had to be chased down. I followed the little instructions there were, latched and tightened everything the was to tighten and it still fell apart. Two years ago we purchased this carrier for transporting our cats. After only a year the top split. The handle was useless. Another option was to use the shoulder harness. The rings broke through the plastic. A 16 pound cat could not possibly be the reason this product failed. I give this product a rating of zero. I honestly think it was a huge waste of money, simply because the design was flawed.

I looked at a number of options and could not find another crate as narrow as this one. The metal door is easy to close and I was able to flip it so the door opened the direction I needed. The only negative is with the limited space, the opening radius of the door is fairly limited. Both my dogs can easily fit, but depending on the space in your unit, a larger dog might have troubles fitting through the door. I purchased two of these "KennelMaster 24" Folding Black Wire 2 Door Dog Crate" and have had them for several months. What a great buy! Super easy to set up: they come preassembled and all folded up. They unfold and set up in a minute. I have one for each of my dogs: a Maltese/Bichon mix and a Chihuahua mix (who looks just like a small German Shepherd). We use their crates for the night time and when we leave the house. These crates are made of very nice thick metal. Incredibly sturdy. The latches are well made and smart-doggy proof. I like that the bottom is solid and can be easily removed and sanitized. My dogs have scratched and nibbled on the bars daily and the crates have held up like new. There are two doors on each crate: one door on a long side and one door on a short side. There's also a handle on top which makes it really easy to move around when I am relocating it, transporting the dogs, or just moving the crates to vacuum and clean underneath. My crates also came with some additional wire dividers that I don't use. I believe they are for making the crate smaller when you have a puppy and removing it as your dog grows. Crates can be really expensive so I was glad to find these at such a bargain price, especially because they are so well made. I know these crates will last many, many years. I have no negative things to say about these dog crates. I would highly recommend them! Please note: I do not put both dogs in the same crate, though they do both fit. We've had a few crates over the years and they are all much of a muchness. However, I really like the way the doors latch on this one. You can simply lift it up and over the little lug at the bottom for a quick shut option, or if you have a rowdy inhabitant, you can also slide across the latch in a traditional manner. Hard to explain, but a neat function. I take one to dog training regularly (it folds up as you would expect although with a big dog it is heavy) and I also pair it with the Midwest Crate Cover which is also nice and light, but provides a visual barrier if things are getting a little exciting outside!Belinda
