The XL size can be hard to find. Was out-of-stock at Petmate, so I signed up for an e-mail alert when in stock. I am confident I received an alert just as soon as it was being manufactured. I really appreciate that. I ordered two for my Aussies. Yes, is a tad large for them, but they've used this size since they were young, and sleep in them. They can turn around easily in them, the crate has very good air movement, and the sides are straight with no lost space inside as so many have with curved sides. One cover was damaged in shipment. I let Petmate know on a weekend and got an immediate response from customer service. I just sent them a picture of the damage and had a new crate in a few days. Great experience all around. Shipping cost was high, but that's part of the time we live in. I'd been looking for this crate at other locations for a few years. Never found it in XL. Was well worth the shipping cost to me. This is my second purchase directly from Petmate — each experience has been great.

So my dogs are rescues. The first one hated the metal wire crate. 3 years & another rescue added to our pack I decided to try crating again to save my home. I was a bit nervous because this was a huge investment – I purchased 2 cates & 2 crate beds. I assembled the crates in the bedroom where they would be placed. I allowed my dogs to watch me and inspect. I even stood inside the crate before assembling so they could see. I put in the cushy furry bed, got a treat, said kennel up and Bam! They climbed right in, I closed the door and gave them their treat. They absolutely LOVE their crates. When they get frightened from the thunder & lightning, they kennel up and are happier & safer. When we have people coming to visit, especially new to the pups, I kennel them up about 10 minutes before guests arrive. Once guests show up, I explain to them to ignore the dogs when I let them out. This kennel is strong. The tie-down holes, one per corner, go through both the top half and the bottom half of the kennel, which is an excellent improvement over no tie down holes. Another improvement over the old version is that water cannot collect on top since there are no bowl-like indentations on the top. The door is heavy construction, and can be mounted as Left or Right swing. I put the kennel on the passenger's side of the vehicle so that I can use the empty space behind the driver for carrying a jug of water, leashes, and other stuff. The advertised length is 40", but be aware that the usable length or "inside" length is 33". This is adequate if your dog is 33" or less from the top of the tail to the end of his front nails, while lying in the "sphinx" position. ONE CON: There are no drainage holes in the bottom half. I plan to drill my own (well, get the hubby to do it). A suggestion for the manufacturer: Make a Truck Version of the kennel. It would be the same as this except for two changes: (1) Add drain holes, and (2) Make the top rear panel (opposite the door) from transparent acrylic, so the driver can see through it. This would be a safety feature, as the blind spot would be reduced.Karen
Excellent dog kennel/crate, easy to assemble and relatively lightweight, but strong. Came with extra fasteners for the top and bottom sections, which I have put aside for possible future use. Also has nice hand hold areas underneath the rim on both sides of the kennel for carrying/lifting.

The crate had obviously been used and returned. The metal was rusted in places and the plastic bottom tray was dirty. When I decided to return it, It was a challenge to get it back in the box. When I took it back to the store, I asked about a discount and received 15% off (the tax). I had previously bought one that was marked down by 50% because the box was damaged. I was quite disappointed in the whole experience. Apparently the merchandise was supposed to be checked if the box was damaged and that wasn’t done in this case.Janice
I've owned dogs for the last 40 years. I've used MidWest wire crates for my last 4 dogs. This iCrate didn't disappoint. It's sturdy and and easy to put up and take down. I use them when I travel with my dogs too. My dogs only use their crates for sleeping in at night or napping in during the day. During the day, their crate doors are left open. I close the dogs in at night. I don't have an issue with my dogs trying to escape from their crates, so I can't speak to whether or not this would be sturdy enough for a dog that's determined to get out of their crate. These crates are more than sturdy enough for my miniature Schnauzer, Havanese, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. All three of my dogs love their MidWest iCrates, as did my previous dog! They go in them voluntarily and when told to "crate up". My only concern with the current crate I ordered is that that one of the latches isn't lined up quite right so it's a bit tight when closing the crate door. I bent it slightly and it works much better. I haven't had that issue with any of the previous MidWest crates I've used. I'm a MidWest crate fan.Eddie09
We bought this in April 2022 for our Rhodesian Ridgeback mix puppy. He was weeks old when we rescued him. He was a Parvo pup and barely survived, so rest and his own quiet space was highly recommended for recovery. We first used the divider which was great. However, as he grew, so did his strength. It definitely is not strong enough for large dogs. Even for short amounts of time. At the moment he is 6 months and 60 pounds. Thankfully he did not get out nor hurt himself! I got this for a ~60lbs. labrador retriever and he seems to love it. Big enough on the inside for him to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably. It's sturdy, but not so heavy that it doesn't move around a little bit when he changes positions. It was easy enough to put together. A couple of the plastic screws didn't seem to have the ends filed off all the way (hard to describe but basically instead of a flat end, the plastic stuck out a little extra on one side instead of being flat across), which made them harder to fit straight through the holes in assembly. Fortunately, they send a few extra, so I had enough that were straight enough to put the crate together. Also, just be aware of the plastic bottom – I ran my hand across the bottom to clean it before putting it together and scraped my hand on a piece of plastic that stuck up a little (it was like a little ring manufacturing imprint). I filed it down before letting my dog in so he wouldn't get scraped on it, but just something to be on the look out for.Labbadabbadoo
The sizing recommendation by the manufacturer seems to be off. Dimensions are not the actual dimensions if you were to take a measuring tape and measure yourself. For my 55 lb border collie mix who sits at 27 inches tall and stands at 37 inches long from nose to base of tail a large would not fit. I ordered the XX Large and that is a way better fit where she can actually sit without being hunched over. This was purchased for air travel as well so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The material seems relatively durable but it did arrive with a large crack so I will be exchanging. Compared to the Petmate Sky Kennel, this kennel seemed a little bit thinner in material and not as study. However, I order a Sky Kennel in a size Large so perhaps a sizing difference might have affected this. Also, currently, the Sky Kennel is available for a better price on Amazon but not in the size I am looking for.Zozobozo
Nicely built, easy to assemble (all holes line up for screws, about 10 with butterfly nuts).You get extra screws and rubber nuts. The cage design for opening and closing is nice and easy to use. Most of all, our dog took to it the first time. We had the S, same company. Uma is getting big now. Of course, we chose the same company and same product, just L in size. When a puppy, accidents do happen. It is easy to clean. Uma is about 20lbs now and can stand up in the kennel. Still plenty of height room. She may become 30-40lbs and this kennel will be all we need. Our use is for nighttime and when we go out. We have the gray which does not stand out. It is a neutral color and looks good in your kitchen, bedroom or where you keep your dog. The kennel also provides a rectangular cage on both sides on the top half so the dog can look out. The cover was just as I expected. Light weight, durable and easy to care for. The oy recommendation I can .American is to add velcro/hook&loop fasteners to keep the top of the cover in place. This would prevent the occupant from chewing and keep the cover in place. The for is drab but it gives the crate a dark den appearance so the occupationt is calm and content. I have found over the years that animals naturally respond favorably to a darkened environment. They are more relaxed and calm. Babies in a crate with natural, artificial, even greatly reduced lighting remain alert, peering into the darkness. They often whine, whimper, or bark, but cover the crate and within minutes, they unwind and are off to sleep. For this reason, I have put dark cloth or a blanket over my crates. This is the 4th Petmate Compass carrier we've purchased from petsuppiles.com, and we've been very pleased with both the quailtily of the crates and the value. We've priced similarly constructed crates from other brands and retailers and the price was nearly double what we paid on petsupplies.com. I would recommend both this crate AND this retailer to anyone in the market for a pet carrier. Also, just as a tip, we found the 24 inch crate to be the perfect size for adult cats. I was appalled at how much pet carriers cost in pet supply stores, so I decided to look here, and the price was much better. I have two cats and a large carrier for both of them, but most often they go to the vet one at a time, so I wanted a one-cat carrier. Possibly I should have gotten a size up from this, as it's a rather snug fit for my 10-lb kitty, but it's a lot easier to transport. Unlike my larger carrier, this one requires actual nuts and bolts to hold the top onto the bottom, so it can't be latched open from the top. The door also takes a little jiggling to lock all the way, though it opens in both directions or can be lifted out completely. The construction is quite solid, however, and it worked just fine on my last trip to the vet. Just keep in mind that it really is for SMALL pets. #sweepstakesSallie G
Tiny and flimsy. I don't like carriers that are this short. I bought this for my small cat and she can't even stand up in it. It's too hard to get a pet in a tiny carrier like this and I don't think it's comfortable for them to not be able to stand. I would not recommend this. This is such a great product – I'm extremely happy we purchased this. We got it for an upcoming tent camping trip. Our dog typically sleeps in her crate at night but its too large and being metal we were afraid it would rip the tent. I found this item and couldn't be more pleased! Super convenient in its carrying case, very easy to put together, and even comes with stakes in case you do want to use it outside and make sure it doesn't blow away. For the cost too – this is such a great purchase! Notes: the color is more of a burnt orange color. The front/back zipper onto the middle section. We did opt to add another layer of cushion because the one provided is quite thin. We have a 50lb small-ish pit who likes to be super comfy all the time.
I purchased one of these right after I moved into our current home, which was over five years ago. It held up beautifully. I would take it out and hose it down now and again to keep it clean and dustless. I decided to replace it only because the dog loves it so much and it was starting to look a little shabby. He had chewed on the mesh door when he was younger and made a hole, and I was no longer able to zip him into it for the night because he would just force himself through that hole. I was very happy to see that they still make pretty much exactly the same product, although I probably shouldn't have been because it's such a good-quality item other people would surely re-buy it too. I can't praise it highly enough. For what it is–a lightweight yet sturdy, easily transportable (even with its own carrying case) dog's home-away-from-home, I doubt it could be bettered, especially for the price.David

Exactly what I needed. My 5 month puppy had outgrown the first carrier and I needed something to use in the car and it fits perfectly. I put it in the backseat and the seatbelt fits and keeps it in place. I put it in the rear passenger side and I can see him and he can see me. Note of caution: there is a strap with a hook inside the crate. I found that it was too short to allow him to move around so hooking your dog up to strap may not be a good idea.Reid1

We have a Catahoula pup and ordered the 36” soft camo crate. It fits perfectly in our Jeep and is great for travel purposes. I have read reviews on rips and tears but this crate is made very well! Only reason there would be an issue is if the dog is not crate trained/loves to chew and scratch. It did take a bit for our pup to get use to it in the car but once he did it has been the best! Super easy to store away as well.

Easy to transport as it lays flat and easy to set up. My dog will likely grow to be a 50 lbs border collie but right now is about 14 lbs. I have set up the partition to give him 2/3 of the space and it is perfect for him. The double latch system provides security and ease of use. We also bought the mattress pad for this kennel and it fits under the partition if you are making the space smaller ( no need to bunch up on the usable side)Ron P
The crate had obviously been used and returned. The metal was rusted in places and the plastic bottom tray was dirty. When I decided to return it, It was a challenge to get it back in the box. When I took it back to the store, I asked about a discount and received 15% off (the tax). I had previously bought one that was marked down by 50% because the box was damaged. I was quite disappointed in the whole experience. Apparently the merchandise was supposed to be checked if the box was damaged and that wasn’t done in this case.Janice
I've owned dogs for the last 40 years. I've used MidWest wire crates for my last 4 dogs. This iCrate didn't disappoint. It's sturdy and and easy to put up and take down. I use them when I travel with my dogs too. My dogs only use their crates for sleeping in at night or napping in during the day. During the day, their crate doors are left open. I close the dogs in at night. I don't have an issue with my dogs trying to escape from their crates, so I can't speak to whether or not this would be sturdy enough for a dog that's determined to get out of their crate. These crates are more than sturdy enough for my miniature Schnauzer, Havanese, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. All three of my dogs love their MidWest iCrates, as did my previous dog! They go in them voluntarily and when told to "crate up". My only concern with the current crate I ordered is that that one of the latches isn't lined up quite right so it's a bit tight when closing the crate door. I bent it slightly and it works much better. I haven't had that issue with any of the previous MidWest crates I've used. I'm a MidWest crate fan.Eddie09

This kennel looks great in your home. It’s much more decorative than a traditional crate. And for the price of why not? Well that’s easy. It’s not as functional as a traditional kennel. I read reviews before buying this, and a lot of those reviews stated that their dogs tore this kennel apart. But I thought my dog shouldn’t have a problem with that because she is crate trained. As a matter of fact she went into her old kennel willingly without anyone asking all of the time. It was her safe space I think. Never tried to break out. But the thing with this kennel is the material that it is made out of is weak and if you’re a pitbull, very soft. My dog chewed the bars out with ease and the fake wood was like bubblegum to her. I love this kennel because of the way it looks in my room but for how strong it is NOT, it is incredibly over priced.BrianaL02
I love the small "escape proof" crate! Its a gem! The price is great especially with free shipping! my chihuahua figured out how to escape from her other crate and caused a huge ruckus in the apt complex. Aesthetically pleasing as it blends with other furniture. Easy assembly, and the size is great for a mid to small dog or other animals that fit the size group. Reviews are misleading. I cannot imagine that this thing sits under an airline seat. This thing is as big as a dog house. I have a 6 pound Yorkie. I am four foot ten inches tall. There is no way that I am going to haul this thing around. Now I will have to return it. This soft-sided cat carrier is just what I needed and I'm so happy at how quickly it arrived. I have used the heavy, hard plastic carriers for years, but this is much more convenient. I love my new pet carrier my three kittens fit inside just perfectly they are about 12 weeks old and they fit comfortably all three of them and it isn't that heavy it has a carry strap as well as the handles. It also has poles inside that you fit together (very simple) which makes this carrier a lot more sturdier when sitting on its own on the floor. There are two bags that hang on the side as well for toys or a bowl if you like or a leash. And I figured out there is a hanging strap inside which can also be used to hook on your pet as a short leash which keeps them connected to the carrier it only bout 12in long. If this strap serves any other purpose can someone else put that in the review because I couldn't figure out any other reason this would be here. The carrier also folds and collapses into a flat easier item to store. Easy to clean material.

We have a powerfully built 40 pound mutt who can muscle her way out of her old crate by popping the single latched door open. We had to add an extra clip to the door to keep her in the crate, which is a pain getting the clip on and off to let her in and out. She can’t gorse the door on this crate open due to the double latches AND the extra “hook” on the tip that holds the latches in place. My little bulldozer can’t open this crate by force and go counter surfing, much to her dismay.TKettle

Not quite what I expected based on the price. . . I was expecting more of a Trex like material based the price and description however, it is just a heaver plastic with a wood like graining to it. Overall pretty nice and I do like the metal rails. This could be fine for a small quiet dog, returning item for poor workmanship and design flaws. The door hardware would not with stand a strong determined dog. The door stop would not work correctly because of interference from the wire screen put in by the manufacturer. That was the first thing to put on and we decided to go no further. There are so many awful crates/kennels out there! From the craptastically-made ones that double as end tables to the ugly, wiry kind… This Richell kennel is most excellent. The 4 wheels make it easy to move from room to room (and you can lock the wheels, too), assembly is easy, and the top opening is the best feature of all that I never thought about needing. This is a very solid, thoughtfully-designed, carefully manufactured crate for small and medium dogs–though I can't speak to how it would hold up to an obsessive chewer. Also great is that if you change your mind, just return it to your local Petco 🙂MCSZ

I needed a crate that I could keep in my living area that looked good and didn't take up a lot of space to use when I leave the house for more than an hour! He loves it. This was worth the money I spent and I have donated my old one to a shelter so double value!Barbara
