The XL size can be hard to find. Was out-of-stock at Petmate, so I signed up for an e-mail alert when in stock. I am confident I received an alert just as soon as it was being manufactured. I really appreciate that. I ordered two for my Aussies. Yes, is a tad large for them, but they've used this size since they were young, and sleep in them. They can turn around easily in them, the crate has very good air movement, and the sides are straight with no lost space inside as so many have with curved sides. One cover was damaged in shipment. I let Petmate know on a weekend and got an immediate response from customer service. I just sent them a picture of the damage and had a new crate in a few days. Great experience all around. Shipping cost was high, but that's part of the time we live in. I'd been looking for this crate at other locations for a few years. Never found it in XL. Was well worth the shipping cost to me. This is my second purchase directly from Petmate — each experience has been great.

So my dogs are rescues. The first one hated the metal wire crate. 3 years & another rescue added to our pack I decided to try crating again to save my home. I was a bit nervous because this was a huge investment – I purchased 2 cates & 2 crate beds. I assembled the crates in the bedroom where they would be placed. I allowed my dogs to watch me and inspect. I even stood inside the crate before assembling so they could see. I put in the cushy furry bed, got a treat, said kennel up and Bam! They climbed right in, I closed the door and gave them their treat. They absolutely LOVE their crates. When they get frightened from the thunder & lightning, they kennel up and are happier & safer. When we have people coming to visit, especially new to the pups, I kennel them up about 10 minutes before guests arrive. Once guests show up, I explain to them to ignore the dogs when I let them out. The kennels are made of a cheap plastic that cracked assumingely upon an impact during shipping. Pet mate is replacing unit, however the quality is not that of the unit I’ve had for 10+ years. The product is sturdy but the screen door is not strong enough to stop a dog from scratching a hole in it. The zippers are weaker and not large enough. The frame is strong and easy to put together. I would add a divider to support a puppy through his stages of life and maybe a flap that covers the the bottom half of the door screen as an option if your pup is a scratcher. I am basing this review on inspection of the Crate, I have not actually used it yet. I bought it for a future trip. The crate appears to be well made. It was easy to set up and to take back down. This will be great for a crate trained dog. I would definitely not purchase or use this for a dog that is not crate trained. They would definitely be able to escape and ruin this with ease. This kennel looks great in your home. It’s much more decorative than a traditional crate. And for the price of why not? Well that’s easy. It’s not as functional as a traditional kennel. I read reviews before buying this, and a lot of those reviews stated that their dogs tore this kennel apart. But I thought my dog shouldn’t have a problem with that because she is crate trained. As a matter of fact she went into her old kennel willingly without anyone asking all of the time. It was her safe space I think. Never tried to break out. But the thing with this kennel is the material that it is made out of is weak and if you’re a pitbull, very soft. My dog chewed the bars out with ease and the fake wood was like bubblegum to her. The crate had obviously been used and returned. The metal was rusted in places and the plastic bottom tray was dirty. When I decided to return it, It was a challenge to get it back in the box. When I took it back to the store, I asked about a discount and received 15% off (the tax). I had previously bought one that was marked down by 50% because the box was damaged. I was quite disappointed in the whole experience. Apparently the merchandise was supposed to be checked if the box was damaged and that wasn’t done in this case.Janice
I've owned dogs for the last 40 years. I've used MidWest wire crates for my last 4 dogs. This iCrate didn't disappoint. It's sturdy and and easy to put up and take down. I use them when I travel with my dogs too. My dogs only use their crates for sleeping in at night or napping in during the day. During the day, their crate doors are left open. I close the dogs in at night. I don't have an issue with my dogs trying to escape from their crates, so I can't speak to whether or not this would be sturdy enough for a dog that's determined to get out of their crate. These crates are more than sturdy enough for my miniature Schnauzer, Havanese, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. All three of my dogs love their MidWest iCrates, as did my previous dog! They go in them voluntarily and when told to "crate up". My only concern with the current crate I ordered is that that one of the latches isn't lined up quite right so it's a bit tight when closing the crate door. I bent it slightly and it works much better. I haven't had that issue with any of the previous MidWest crates I've used. I'm a MidWest crate fan.Eddie09
We bought this in April 2022 for our Rhodesian Ridgeback mix puppy. He was weeks old when we rescued him. He was a Parvo pup and barely survived, so rest and his own quiet space was highly recommended for recovery. We first used the divider which was great. However, as he grew, so did his strength. It definitely is not strong enough for large dogs. Even for short amounts of time. At the moment he is 6 months and 60 pounds. Thankfully he did not get out nor hurt himself! I got this for a ~60lbs. labrador retriever and he seems to love it. Big enough on the inside for him to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably. It's sturdy, but not so heavy that it doesn't move around a little bit when he changes positions. It was easy enough to put together. A couple of the plastic screws didn't seem to have the ends filed off all the way (hard to describe but basically instead of a flat end, the plastic stuck out a little extra on one side instead of being flat across), which made them harder to fit straight through the holes in assembly. Fortunately, they send a few extra, so I had enough that were straight enough to put the crate together. Also, just be aware of the plastic bottom – I ran my hand across the bottom to clean it before putting it together and scraped my hand on a piece of plastic that stuck up a little (it was like a little ring manufacturing imprint). I filed it down before letting my dog in so he wouldn't get scraped on it, but just something to be on the look out for.Labbadabbadoo
The sizing recommendation by the manufacturer seems to be off. Dimensions are not the actual dimensions if you were to take a measuring tape and measure yourself. For my 55 lb border collie mix who sits at 27 inches tall and stands at 37 inches long from nose to base of tail a large would not fit. I ordered the XX Large and that is a way better fit where she can actually sit without being hunched over. This was purchased for air travel as well so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The material seems relatively durable but it did arrive with a large crack so I will be exchanging. Compared to the Petmate Sky Kennel, this kennel seemed a little bit thinner in material and not as study. However, I order a Sky Kennel in a size Large so perhaps a sizing difference might have affected this. Most of all, our dog took to it the first time. We had the S, same company. Uma is getting big now. Of course, we chose the same company and same product, just L in size. When a puppy, accidents do happen. It is easy to clean. Uma is about 20lbs now and can stand up in the kennel. Still plenty of height room. I got this yesterday in a pick up order. When I got home and put it together I noticed that one of the post for screws was broken. I was able to still use it instead of dragging it back to the store for a return. But I’m disappointed because you pay almost 100 for something that is already damaged. This crate was amazing for the first couple of weeks. Then our small mixed breed power chewer with separation anxiety was able to chew 2 large holes in the side of it. He's only spent about 40 hours total in it. I dont work, so he only spends a couple of hours at a time on the weekends in it. The rest of the time, its just his "bedroom". One of the holes he chewed is large enough foe him to stick his head through. Looks like we will be looking into the gray ones with the really small holes and military grade plastic. IF YOUR PUP IS A CHEWER AND HAS ANXIETY DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS CRATE. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO EAT EIGHT THROUGH IT. I was appalled at how much pet carriers cost in pet supply stores, so I decided to look here, and the price was much better. I have two cats and a large carrier for both of them, but most often they go to the vet one at a time, so I wanted a one-cat carrier. Possibly I should have gotten a size up from this, as it's a rather snug fit for my 10-lb kitty, but it's a lot easier to transport. Unlike my larger carrier, this one requires actual nuts and bolts to hold the top onto the bottom, so it can't be latched open from the top. The door also takes a little jiggling to lock all the way, though it opens in both directions or can be lifted out completely. The construction is quite solid, however, and it worked just fine on my last trip to the vet. Just keep in mind that it really is for SMALL pets. #sweepstakesSallie G

This kennel is strong. The tie-down holes, one per corner, go through both the top half and the bottom half of the kennel, which is an excellent improvement over no tie down holes. Another improvement over the old version is that water cannot collect on top since there are no bowl-like indentations on the top. The door is heavy construction, and can be mounted as Left or Right swing. I put the kennel on the passenger's side of the vehicle so that I can use the empty space behind the driver for carrying a jug of water, leashes, and other stuff. The advertised length is 40", but be aware that the usable length or "inside" length is 33". This is adequate if your dog is 33" or less from the top of the tail to the end of his front nails, while lying in the "sphinx" position. ONE CON: There are no drainage holes in the bottom half. I plan to drill my own (well, get the hubby to do it). A suggestion for the manufacturer: Make a Truck Version of the kennel. It would be the same as this except for two changes: (1) Add drain holes, and (2) Make the top rear panel (opposite the door) from transparent acrylic, so the driver can see through it. We have a Catahoula pup and ordered the 36” soft camo crate. It fits perfectly in our Jeep and is great for travel purposes. I have read reviews on rips and tears but this crate is made very well! Only reason there would be an issue is if the dog is not crate trained/loves to chew and scratch. It did take a bit for our pup to get use to it in the car but once he did it has been the best! Super easy to store away as well.

Very nice and easy to assemble. Unlike most of the other crates we have used, could only find one sharp edge which, of course, I cut myself on. But I love the how the gates lift up and slide down for extra security on the latch mechanism. Also, the tray is perfect and does not slide around once the crate is assembled properly. Very hard to use. Clips and clamps are very poorly made. Aside from the fact that I've asked for refund and donated them, I did try to utilize them to no avial. When I received this crate, I was very impressed with it, I have a rescue JRT who is an escape artist. I placed him in the crate feeling certain that he would be contained while I was at work. In the time that I was gone, he literally destroyed the crate, ripping it to shreds, tore the doors off, etc. I do believe that this crate would be adequate for a dog who isn't quite so zealous about getting out. It seems sturdy and would be safe for car travel. Just won't work for a dog who is intent upon getting out. I bought it because of the description of it being a "steel" crate, but it is more of just a heavy hard plastic. Do not trust it to contain a zealous dog who is intent upon escape.
I bought this crate to contain my rescue dog who is an escape artist. Upon delivery, the crate looked solid but after the first time putting my dog in the crate, he was able to bend the door enough to escape within an hour. Reviews are misleading. I cannot imagine that this thing sits under an airline seat. This thing is as big as a dog house. I have a 6 pound Yorkie. I am four foot ten inches tall. There is no way that I am going to haul this thing around. Now I will have to return it. I love my new pet carrier my three kittens fit inside just perfectly they are about 12 weeks old and they fit comfortably all three of them and it isn't that heavy it has a carry strap as well as the handles. It also has poles inside that you fit together (very simple) which makes this carrier a lot more sturdier when sitting on its own on the floor. There are two bags that hang on the side as well for toys or a bowl if you like or a leash. And I figured out there is a hanging strap inside which can also be used to hook on your pet as a short leash which keeps them connected to the carrier it only bout 12in long. If this strap serves any other purpose can someone else put that in the review because I couldn't figure out any other reason this would be here. The carrier also folds and collapses into a flat easier item to store. Easy to clean material.

We have a powerfully built 40 pound mutt who can muscle her way out of her old crate by popping the single latched door open. We had to add an extra clip to the door to keep her in the crate, which is a pain getting the clip on and off to let her in and out. My GSD pup is crate trained. I purchased my first PetMate plastic crate in 2004 and never had an issue. When my GSD got too big for his wire kennel, I upgraded the size and got a PetMate Ultra (for its airline approved status). For three solid nights and any day time crate use highly distressed my dog. No one in the house slept. He was quite agitated (barking, clawing at the crate bottom, etc). He could not sleep or lay down in the crate. On the fourth night, I put him in the crate with the same result. Ten minutes later, I took out the old 2004 crate (flat bottom, no injection mold markers) and popped him in it. He sat down and gave the biggest sigh. I finally understood he had been in distress because of the new crate. On inspection, I discovered these round things under the bottom, pressed into them with my forearms and immediately felt the pressure points/pain. Who thought this design was a good idea? Did PetMate even try it? I beg designers to sit in it, lie down in it, press their forearms on to these circle things. Question your motives. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a cheap excuse and terrible quality. I’ll be cross-posting this comment on multiple pet store sites. I’m so unimpressed with this design. The incredible distress my dog endured because of shoddy design is unacceptable. PetMate needs to do better for the pets you aim to help. PetMax shouldn’t sell this product; they should ensure the pets they serve do not experience stress or injury.Ginn

I don't remember how long after purchase it was destroyed but there weren't the same size in stock so I've been forced to rig it but only as joke because we both know there is no lock but as long as I'm still home he'll play along. just don't leave your pet in this kennel if the purpose is to prevent them from escaping. The United air freight office in Portland is a bit over enthusiastic! They decided that even tho the pup could stand up, turn around and was clearly happy, he needed a bigger crate. At 6 AM in the morning at the airfreight, United has no crates so they tell me to go find one if he is to go out. I go to three other airlines and hit gold on Alaska (they are awesome). They had a 200 crate that the pup happily goes into and back to united. OK to fly. I them return to Alaska to ship his brother in the same size crate that was turned away and off he goes with not a hitch! Ughh shipping pups is not for the mere mortals!drdawg
